二、读后续写
(1) [2025·江苏南京·二模] 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整故事。
It was 1975. I left school at 16 to work at the Tibooburra Pub, which had special significance for my family. The pub had first been run by my great-grandfather, Walter, back in 1913 and then he sold it. In the late 1940s, my grandfather bought it back. Having spent so much time there as a kid, 1 thought it was a great place to work in. Grandfather’s cheerful smile and comforting voice made those years precious to me. Unfortunately, grandfather died from a heart attack and the pub was eventually sold to a family, which meant I had to find work elsewhere.
I then got a job at the local hospital and enjoyed it, though nothing felt the same as working for one’s own family. Aged 20, I connected with a man named Craig. Later we got married. Running a sheep property kept us busy, but one thing stayed on my mind. “I’d love to buy back the pub one day,” I said to Craig. Part of me still longed for the days of being behind the bar and welcoming customers with a smile, just like my grandfather had.
In 2014, the pub came on the market again, so Craig and I went for it. Our offer was successful.
Running it again was like stepping back in time; nothing much had changed, and I enjoyed slipping into my old job. But Craig and I had plans to expand. We used our savings and did some renovations (翻新), like putting in a beer garden outside and building more motel (汽车旅馆) rooms. I felt like I was not only doing a great business, but also keeping alive our family tradition.
In February 2021, I went to the neighboring state to get some supplies and on the way back, I got a call from Craig. “There’s been a fire at the pub,” he cried. Being hours away was hard as I didn't know how bad the damage was.

A Life-Saving Hero
My wife’s job took her out of town a lot and I needed some company. So one day, I went to the local animal-rescue center. The little cocker spaniel (可卡猎犬) trembling in a cage caught my eye right away. She had scared eyes and I could tell she longed to be picked up and hugged. I gently petted her soft fur, and to my surprise, she stopped shaking. That was that. I filled out the paperwork and took my new dog - Honey home.
I’d had her only a couple of weeks, but Honey and I quickly became close friends. She followed me like a shadow from the very first day. She loved sitting on my lap. We often went to the backyard, where I picked up a ball and threw it. I sat down to watch Honey race after the ball. We had great fun together.
That October morning last year I decided to take Honey with me while I ran some errands (差事). She jumped in and settled down on the passenger seat. I got behind the wheel and started the car. We lived in a remote area up in the hills outside San Rafael, surrounded by tall redwoods. We had to drive up the mountain at a low speed to get to our driveway, which was barely wide enough for one car and ended at a steep cliff.
I turned around and backed up slowly. Just then, a flash of sunlight blinded me. I put my hand up to protect my eyes. Suddenly, the car slipped in the soft soil and rolled down the valley. I heard a horrible crash. A giant branch plunged (扎进) through the roof and hit my leg. We landed upside down. I was stuck. I looked over to find Honey. She was still in the passenger seat. She seemed scared but was not hurt.

My childhood was anything but ordinary — a wonderland of surprises and laughter, thanks to my family. Loving, sweet, and endlessly entertaining, my parents were also gloriously absent-minded. A family trip we took when I was fourteen perfectly tells a lot about this.
My family’s cross-country road trip was Dad’s “masterpiece” — a 10-day journey from Chicago to California via Route 66. Mom called it “character-building”; I dubbed it “survival training”. Dad, the self-proclaimed “King of Spontaneity (随性),” refused to use GPS, relying instead on a 1990s paper map. Mom, always the dreamer, packed three novels and a bag of mismatched socks but forgot essentials like sunscreen and bandaids. I sat in the backseat, alternated between admiring desert sunsets and groaning every time Dad missed an exit, which happened roughly every two hours.
Halfway through Arizona, disaster struck. As night fell, Dad’s “scenic shortcut” to the Grand Canyon turned into our undoing. The paved road dissolved into a rutted trail that led to a lone cactus (仙人掌) farm. As Dad flipped the map upside down, muttering about “misprinted”. Mom sighed, “Adventure is just a wrong turn with a view!” I clutched my seatbelt. “If we die here,” I announced, “I’m haunting this map.”
That night, we camped under the starry sky. Mom tried roasting marshmallows but set her hat on fire. Dad’s “waterproof” tent leaked during a surprise drizzle. I huddled in the car, laughing until our sides hurt. The next morning, Mom found a postcard in her novel — a picture of cactuses. She’d bought it days ago. “For the memories,” she said, winking. Dad groaned. Shaking my head, I looked in the near distance at the cactus farm. A striking mark hanging on a giant cactus read, “Best Cactus, Best Memories”.

Final exams were approaching, and everyone in school was excited about vacations. We were dreaming of far-off destinations, our minds filled with images of thrilling adventures.
After school on Friday, on my way home, I ran into my best friend. Enthusiastic about the vacations, I asked him about his plans. His eyes twinkled brightly as he replied, “I’m going to visit my grandparents with my parents for a week.”
“Don’t you ever get tired of going to the same place year after year I remember, every year, your family takes 7 to 10 days off to head back to your native village,” I asked, raising an eyebrow in curiosity.
“Oh, not at all! That’s the absolute best time of the year for me! Being with my folks in the village is just amazing.” His face beamed with joy as he continued, "In the village, I get to meet so many wonderful people, and everyone there is so kind and welcoming. Our neighborhood crew is tight! We’re always hanging out together, you know Just running wild, chilling by the lake, or bouncing between each other’s houses. Honestly, I know what really matters about these village trips. It’s not the cool places we see — it’s spending time with the people I love. That’s the real treasure of life.”
His words made me recall my own grandparents. I realized I hadn’t seen them for years. But still, it’s a pleasure to be there. … we had big long gardens and a big multi-story house.
The next day, over breakfast, I mustered up the courage and asked my parents, “Can we visit grandparents this summer after exams ” Dad replied hesitantly, “Oh, that’s unexpected.” Mom was surprised. “Well, you know it gets really hot there this time of year.” After a short pause, Dad gave a small sigh and met my hopeful gaze. “However,” he said, “if you perform well in exams, we’ll make the trip.”
For the next six weeks, I threw myself completely into my studies. My mom was amazed by this sudden transformation in me. Soon came the long-awaited exam results.

Chloe had two pet rats, Zena and Roxy. Chloe knew they’re not typical pets and she didn’t like rats either till her friend Martin invited her to his house one day and showed her his pet rats. When she held a rat in her hands for the first time, she saw how loving and intelligent they were, so when one of Martin’s rats had babies, Chloe decided she’d like to take two of them.
It wasn’t easy to persuade Mum and Dad. But fortunately, a good school report arrived just before Chloe’s birthday and her parents were in a good mood. When Mum asked Chloe what she wanted for her birthday, Chloe told her she’d like a pair of rats. After a heated discussion, Mum agreed but insisted they must live in Chloe’s room and could never go to other parts of the house. Chloe was delighted, and two days later they went to Martin’s house to collect Roxy and Zena.
In her room, Chloe opened the cage. First she picked up Roxy and put her on the floor. Then she picked up Zena and put her on her shoulder. Roxy loved to explore. She climbed bookcases and drawers and went under Chloe’s bed. Zena was quieter and liked sitting on Chloe’s shoulder while she read a book. A while later, Mum came and told her, “I’m going to my dance class. I’ll be back about seven o’ clock. Dad will make pasta tonight.”
Mum closed the door. Chloe put Zena back in her cage and called for Roxy. She waited a moment and then started to look for her. Where could Roxy be Then Chloe remembered that Mum had opened the door. Roxy might have gone out of the room!
Chloe started to search. She looked in her parents’ room but Roxy wasn’t there. Then she rushed downstairs to the kitchen only to see nothing. Chloe searched the whole house, calling Roxy’s name the whole time.

In the neighbourhood, my dad, Mr. Duane, is always referred to as “Collector Duane”. He is an enthusiastic collector, who is always on the hunt for old items to repurpose, believing that with a bit of creativity, these forgotten objects can be transformed into something useful and new. Recently, he came across an old bicycle wheel, an old-fashioned metal milk box, an antique lamp, a dirty vase and some old clothes at a flea market, imagining all the possibilities they held.
My parents have a neighbor: Helen Fox. She is a 91-year-old widow (寡妇) . My parents, along with several other neighbors, look after Helen, ensuring she feels loved and supported.
Helen had long suffered from a problem: her mailbox. For some reason, the mailbox was placed insecurely down a somewhat steep (陡峭的) driveway off a busy highway, making it a daily danger for her to fetch her mail. Besides, it was old and rusty, as if it had suffered multiple violent impacts. Its once-bright red paint had faded to a dull pink. The door hung loosely, creaking (嘎吱作响) with every gust of wind. The letters on it had faded over the years. The ‘F’ was no longer clear, the ‘O’ had lost its shape, and the ‘X’ was almost gone. Helen wanted to replace it with a new one and move it to a new location, but she had no idea where to start.
The minute my dad heard about it, he made it his mission to settle the problem. He began by contacting the local rural mail service, arranging to relocate Helen's mailbox. He also talked with Yancey, their shared rural postman, explaining the upcoming change. A relatively safe place was easy to find. But the real challenge was finding a perfect mailbox.

My Suggestions on the Book-drifting Program
Our school’s book-drifting project is meaningful but now it has some problems.
The most serious one is that the selection of books is rather limited. Also, the location of the book shelves is not convenient for students to access, and there is a lack of effective supervision. To solve these problems, I suggest that we should invite students to recommend books that they want to share. We can also open an online platform where students can reserve and borrow books. Moreover, we should set up a monitoring system to ensure the smooth running of the project.
With these improvements, the book-drifting project will surely become more popular among students.

Dear Penny,
I’m thrilled to hear that you’re coming to China for a three-month study! It’ll be an amazing experience I’d like to recommend some useful apps. WeChat is a must-have. You can chat, pay bills, and even order food on it. For traveling, Didi is great for hailing taxis. And if you love reading, QQ Reading has a vast library.
I believe these apps will make your life in China much easier. May your stay here be filled with joy and valuable memories!
Yours,
Li Hua

Hi friends! I’m Li Hua, a Chinese high school student. Noticing your curiosity about the innovation in Chinese education, I’d love to introduce the smart classroom in my school.
Our school uses AI-powered learning platforms that analyze our math mistakes overnight, generating detailed diagnostic reports and suggesting quizzes tailored to individual weak areas. We also explore history with VR headsets — last week, we “strolled” along the Great Wall and even “dug up” virtual artifacts!
These initiatives boost engagement and allow self-paced learning. While some worry about screen time, I believe blending tech with traditional methods creates balanced, future-ready education.

Say No to Digital Overload: Reclaim Real Connections
Dear Fellow Students,
Recent surveys reveal that excessive social media use has caused distraction in studies and weakened real-life interactions.
To address this, we propose: Firstly, limit daily screen time to focus on in-person communication. Secondly, join offline clubs to rebuild genuine friendships. Let’s prioritize face-to-face talks during breaks instead of scrolling phones.
Remember, real connections thrive beyond screens. Together, we can create a more engaged campus life!

A Refresh Corner on Campus
To offer teachers and students a peaceful escape from heavy workload and academic pressure, “A Cozy Reading Haven” can be set up.
Nestled in a sunlit corner of the library, the Cozy Reading Haven offers both physical comfort and mental renewal. Designed with warm lighting and soft seating, this space minimizes distractions and promotes relaxation. Carefully selected inspirational books provide a mental escape, complemented by a refreshment station offering herbal teas and healthy snacks. Moreover, the wall is decorated with a dedicated encouragement board, allowing everyone to share motivational and uplifting messages.
With thoughtful design and deep comfort, this haven is where we can reset, restore and refresh.

When I returned home and saw it with my own eyes, I broke down. The pub was reduced to a pile of ashes, with only the charred walls standing as a silent testament to its former self. The smell of smoke still lingered in the air, mixing with my tears. Craig stood there, equally devastated, as we surveyed the ruins. At that moment, it felt like all our dreams and efforts had gone up in flames.
“We’re going to rebuild it,” I said to Craig, firmly. Despite the overwhelming loss, something inside me refused to give up. The pub wasn’t just a business. It was a part of our family’s legacy, a place where memories were made and traditions were kept alive. We would not let this define the end of our story. With determination in our hearts, we began the long process of reconstruction. We reached out to friends, family, and even the community for support. Together, we worked tirelessly, rebuilding each brick, each beam, with love and resilience. And when the dust settled, the Tibooburra Pub stood again, not just as a building, but as a symbol of hope and the enduring spirit of our family.

I knew I had to do something to save us. I moved a bit to see if I could unpin myself from behind the wheel but ended up crying out in pain from my leg. I grabbed my cell phone and dialed 911, but I couldn't get a signal at the bottom of this valley. Then, I caught sight of Honey.“At least I could save her”, I thought to myself. Painfully, I reached over, picked her up and gently put her through the hole in the window and gave her a pat.“Go home, baby.” She jumped to the ground and raced up the side of the valley.
As I watched Honey fade out of my view, my thoughts started to wander off. Had Honey found her way home Would she get help for me like what happened in the movies With time ticking by, my pulse was weakening. I was about to lose consciousness when I heard Honey barking and I saw a man walking towards me. He told me that he was the forest ranger here. It turned out that Honey made it to his house, ran in circles to grab his attention and successfully led him where I was. I was finally rescued. What a blessing to have Honey join our family!

Suddenly, I found the cactus looked familiar. It was the exact same one from Mom’s misplaced postcard — the spiky silhouette against a pink desert sky. I burst out laughing, pointing at the “Best Cactus, Best Memories” sign. Dad squinted at the postcard, then at the farm, and groaned, “We’ve been circling this place for hours!” Mom, ever the optimist clapped her hands. “It’s fate! Let’s take a family photo!” And so, there we were, grinning like fools in front of a cactus farm, our detour immortalized. Even Dad’s grumbling couldn’t ruin the moment. The absurdity of it all — the wrong turns, the flaming hat, the leaky tent — felt like magic. This wasn’t just a road trip; it was us in our messy, hilarious glory.
We set off again, with a cactus in the trunk. Mom had impulsively bought a tiny potted one from the farm, insisting it was a “souvenir of resilience.” Dad muttered about root systems and trunk space but surrendered when she named it “Spike.” The rest of the trip unfolded in classic family fashion. Dad took three more wrong turns, Mom read her novels aloud (ignoring Dad’s protests), and Spike the cactus became our silent, prickly co-pilot. By the time we reached California, the car was a disaster zone of mismatched socks and candy wrappers — but we were hopelessly, joyfully. And as Mom would say, that was the best destination of all.

I rushed home and immediately handed my parents my score card and a note with “PLEASE.” This time, they instantly agreed. The next day, we set out for our hometown. Every one, be it relatives or neighbors, greeted us with smiles, treating me like their own son. Every day brought new happiness –- digging with Grandpa in the garden, playing games with cousins until sunset, roaming around familiar streets with loved ones and even joining the local kids in their football matches. The days passed as we had a wonderful time together. Truth be told, everything was more fun in a big family. When departure day came, my heart ached.
I saw my mom had tears in her eyes when leaving them. She wiped them away and smiled, saying, “I didn’t realize how much I missed the village until now. It’s not just a place; it’s where our roots are.” As we drove away, I felt a mix of excitement and nostalgia. I realized that the real adventure wasn’t about exploring far-off places but about reconnecting with family and our heritage. This trip wasn’t just for me; it was a reminder for all of us that family is the true treasure of life. From then on, visiting Grandma and Grandpa became our annual tradition, a time to cherish love, laughter, and the simple joys of being together.

“Hi, Chloe!” Dad came with a bag of food. Chloe’s heart raced as she turned to him, her face pale with worry. “Dad, Roxy is missing! She might have run out of my room when Mum left!” she exclaimed, her voice trembling. Dad’s cheerful expression faded, and he quickly put the bag down. “Don’t panic,” he said, trying to calm her. “We’ll find her together.” Chloe nodded, but her hands were shaking as she opened cabinets and peeked behind furniture. Every second felt like an eternity, and her mind raced with worst-case scenarios. What if Roxy got hurt What if she was lost forever Tears welled up in her eyes as she whispered, “Please, Roxy, where are you ”
Then she heard Dad laughing and Mum called out, “Chloe, come here!” Chloe froze for a moment, her heart pounding. Was Roxy okay She rushed down the stairs, her legs feeling like jelly. When she reached the kitchen, she saw Dad holding Roxy gently in his hands, a big smile on his face. “Look who I found hiding in the pantry!” he said. Chloe’s eyes filled with tears of relief as she carefully took Roxy from him. “Oh, Roxy, you scared me so much!” she whispered, cuddling the little rat close. Mum stood nearby, shaking her head but smiling. “Next time, keep the door closed,” she said. Chloe nodded, her heart still racing but filled with gratitude. She promised herself she would never let Roxy out of her sight again.

Then he remembered the old objects he had recently collected. Among them was an old-fashioned metal milk box, which showed scratches but was still sturdy. He thought it could be repurposed into a perfect new mailbox. With a burst of inspiration, he got to work immediately. He cleaned the milk box thoroughly, removing years of dirt and rust. He also added a new coat of bright red paint, making it look brand-new and cheerful, as if getting a second life. To personalize it, he painted the letters “FOX” clearly on the side in white. For the finishing touch, he attached a small, decorative metal handle he had salvaged from an old drawer.
The next day, he showed up at Helen's house with a shiny new mailbox. Helen was amazed when she saw it. “Mr. Duane, this is wonderful! You are so creative and kind,” she exclaimed, her eyes lighting up with joy. My dad installed the mailbox in a new, safer location. Yancey, the postman, was also impressed when he delivered the first batch of mail to the new mailbox. From then on, Helen no longer had to worry about fetching her mail. The new mailbox not only served its purpose but also became a symbol of the warm and caring community they lived in. Every time Helen saw it, she was reminded of the kindness of her neighbors, especially Collector Duane.
