When Wilson was 10 years old, he promised his mother that one day she would never again have to wash other people’s clothes for a living and he was going to start his own business and support her. His mother just nodded silently, knowing no member of their family had ever owned a business.
Years passed, but Wilson’s dream did not come true. After high school, Wilson joined the army, where his goal of one day owning a family restaurant began to take shape. He signed up for the food service school there and he became such an excellent cook that he was promoted to the officers’ dining hall.
After he left the army at 28, he worked as a police officer for the following fifteen years. When he felt he was in need of the business skills for his business, he took business classes at night in his off-hours. “I also saved every cent I earned as a police officer,” he recalled. “For ten years, I didn’t spend one cent — there were no movies, no vacations, and no trips.”
By 2013, with enough savings, Wilson decided to make his dream a reality. He opened his first restaurant. However, the first few months were a failure. Wilson quickly change his business strategy and once a week he offered his employees classes in customer service and management. He encouraged them to develop personal and professional goals. He always stressed that the faster and more efficiently the employees served the customers, the more profitable that way would be.
Today, Wilson owns nine restaurants and employs over four hundred people. In the community, Wilson funded athletic teams and scholarships to get kids off the streets and into community centers and schools. Then his restaurants became profitable, earning much more than before. The release of DeepSeek-R1 has sent shockwaves through the AI industry, reshaping assumptions about the cost of high-performance AI. Achieving results comparable to OpenAI’s o1 at just 3-5% of the cost, this open-source model has gained immense popularity, topping downloads on HuggingFace and trending among developers eager to explore its capabilities.
A major innovation behind DeepSeek-R1 is its unconventional training approach. Unlike traditional models that rely heavily on supervised fine-tuning (SFT) for step-by-step learning, DeepSeek-R1 was mainly trained using reinforcement learning (RL). This allowed it to develop independent reasoning abilities, rather than relying on pre-set training data. While some SFT was reintroduced later to address readability and language issues, the success of RL in enhancing reasoning performance marks a breakthrough in AI training methodology.
DeepSeek’s rapid progress also shows its smart use of resources. Operating with far fewer GPUs than OpenAI and Google, it took advantage of open-source projects, such as Meta’s Llama models, and used advanced techniques like mixed-precision training and optimized (优化) GPU communication. Although the exact costs remain uncertain, estimates suggest DeepSeek-R1 was created on a much smaller budget than usual, proving that cutting-edge AI does not necessarily require massive financial investment.
Another key advantage of DeepSeek-R1 is its transparency (透明性). Unlike OpenAI’s models, which hide their reasoning process, DeepSeek-R1 openly displays its thought process, making it easier for developers to find mistakes and improve results. This has fueled interest in using DeepSeek to fine-tune smaller, task-specific AI models, making powerful AI tools more accessible.
However, DeepSeek’s dominance is not guaranteed. Open-source innovation moves quickly and rivals like Meta and Mistral are expected to adopt similar breakthroughs soon. Meanwhile, OpenAI’s massive investments, including its $500 billion Stargate project, face growing inspection as cost-efficient alternatives emerge.
Despite concerns over potential biases in DeepSeek’s model, many developers see these as manageable through fine-tuning. Ultimately, businesses and consumers stand to benefit the most, as the increasing availability of high-quality, low-cost AI tools challenges the industry’s traditional power structure.
8. Why is DeepSeek-R1 so popular
A. It is more convenient. B. It dominates AI industry.
C. It is more cost-effective. D. It can achieve better results.
9. What can we learn about DeepSeek-R1 in paragraph 2
A. Its training datasets. B. Its reasoning abilities.
C Its training method. D. Its processing language.
10. Why is DeepSeek-R1 considered more transparent than OpenAI’s models
A. It makes all of its training data publicly available.
B. It reveals the full chain of reasoning behind its answers.
C. It is designed to answer any question without restrictions.
D. It can use reinforcement learning methods to improve results.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To introduce DeepSeek-R1.
B. To call for investments in AI.
C. To warn about the risks of AI.
D. To clarify reinforcement learning.
D
Our earliest ancestors trapped or hunted what meat they ate. When we learned to domesticate (驯化)animals, we raised them on our land, or we wandered the land with our herds. No matter which tribe we belonged to, our animals were our property. We ate their flesh in small portions, and we ate almost every bit of them, especially the poorest among us.
The Industrial Revolution changed meat. In the 19th century, refrigeration enabled meat to be trucked in from far away, or shipped from even further away, which eventually led to the destroying of forests in places like Brazil. Production then became more efficient. By the late 1940s, antibiotics (抗生素) became routine in chicken feed. By the late 1990s, genetically modified (转基因的) corn and soy brought abundant crops of animal feed. Animals were bred to be bigger and faster-growing. In the U.S., government subsidies (补贴) helped: free groundwater, federally backed loans, price guarantees for feed crops. And meat went big.
Today the $1 trillion global meat industry is dominated by a handful of companies, including JBS, Cargill, and Tyson. Since 1961, meat production has increased four times, dwarfing the growth in the human population, which merely doubled.
Meat went from being special to being an everyday right. The more we developed, the more flesh we ate. China’s meat consumption jumped sharply, from about 6. 6 pounds per person in 1961 to more than 140 pounds in 2024. But the United States became the lions of Planet Carnivore (食肉动物). On average, Americans went from eating around 207 pounds of meat in 1961 to 280 pounds in 2024, and chicken came to dominate.
It wasn’t just chicken consumption that changed. Follow a chicken truck to the butchery — continued forest destruction, an alarming rise in antibiotic-resistant bacteria, ever-increasing greenhouse gas emissions — and you realize what a dark shadow we have cast over where we live.
12. How did the Industrial Revolution affect meat
A. It caused a sharp fall in the price of meat. B. It decreased the nutritional value of meat.
C. It restricted the use of antibiotics in meat. D. It revolutionized meat production and distribution.
13. What does the underlined word “dwarfing” mean in paragraph 3
A. Making something seem small. B. Greatly expanding something.
C. Matching something in number. D. Negatively impacting something.
14. How does the author show the rapid increase in meat consumption
A. By making a comparison. B. By giving explanations.
C. By introducing a concept. D. By making a prediction.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Antibiotics Has Transformed Chicken Feed B. Global Companies Dominate Meat Industry
C. Our Taste for Flesh Has Exhausted the Earth D. Meat Production Results in Forest Destruction

While restricting glitter is only an extremely small step in addressing the broader microplastic problem, the European Union has taken the lead in this. Leading UK retailers such as Morrisons should be praised for taking a stand and going completely glitter free. ____20____ But if we are to protect our planet, no step is too small.
A. Marine life often mistakes it for food.
B. The glitter you used a decade ago probably still exists.
C. But it is now officially prohibited in the European Union.

It was a cool autumn morning when the school announced the annual sports day. For most students, it was a day of excitement and joy, but for me, it was just another event I wanted to avoid. I had always been the type to shy away from group activities, preferring the company of my books and thoughts.
Our class monitor, Sarah, noticed my unwillingness. She was the very image of enthusiasm and leadership, always trying to bring the class together. One day, she approached me during lunch. “Why don’t you join us for the relay race It’ll be fun,” she said with a warm smile. I hesitated, but her persistence was hard to ignore.
The next day, Sarah organized a practice session. I unwillingly joined, feeling out of place among my more athletic classmates. As we ran, I tripped and fell, scraping (擦伤) my knee. Embarrassed, I wanted to quit, but Sarah was there in an instant, offering a hand and words of encouragement. “It’s okay, we’re a team,” she said. At this time, other fellow classmates came to encourage me. Their kindness made me feel less alone.
As the days went by, I found myself looking forward to the practices. The care and support among my classmates was infectious. I began to see the value of teamwork and the joy of shared experiences. My initial unwillingness melted away, replaced by a newfound sense of belonging.
The anticipation for the sports day filled me with excitement. I dream of the cheers, the applauding crowd, and the thrill of competition. Training hard, I longed to showcase my skills, push my limits, share and feel the joy of victory. This event was more than a game; it means a lot for me. I could not wait to be part of it!

Glitter (闪光纸屑) is widely used to decorate clothing, arts, and so on. During festivals and celebrations, it brings joy and excitement, creating a dazzling atmosphere that unites people in the celebration. ____16____ It is necessary to know why.
The problem with glitter is that it is a microplastic that doesn’t break down naturally. ____17____
And it makes products that you may normally wish to recycle, such as wrapping paper, no longer recyclable. This is why the UK government has put out guidance on festive waste, reminding households not to put shiny or glittery Christmas cards or wrapping paper in recycling bags.
Besides, due to its size, lots of plastic glitter will unavoidably make its way into water, rivers.and eventually the oceans. ___18___.This has been shown to significantly impact the reproduction rates of oysters and make other. animals less active, more likely to be eaten and less likely to thrive.
____19____ Increasing research shows glitter ends up back on our dinner tables. Aside from directly finding its way into our food from glittery cards and decorations, it’s consumed by fish, shellfish, seabirds and other marine life, thus passing through the food chain and eventually reaching us and harming our health.

【答案】 An Unforgettable Labor Experience
In order to enable us to get close to nature and understand the value of labor, a planting activity was held in the backyard of our school last month.
Under the guidance of an experienced gardener, we planted tomatoes. At first, we carefully selected the seeds and dug holes. Then we placed the seeds in and covered them with soil. After that, we watered them regularly and watched them grow with anticipation.
This experience made me realize the value of labor and the wonder of life. I also gained a newfound respect for the farmers and the food we consumed through this unforgettable labor experience. I hope we can participate in more meaningful activities like this in the future.

【答案】One possible version:
The day I looked forward to came eventually. The air buzzed with cheers as our relay team stepped onto the track. I was seized by tension and unease, my palms sweating constantly. Sarah patted me on my shoulders, giving me encouragement with an inspiring look. A sense of determination crowding in, I raised my head confidently. When the whistle blew, I dashed like an arrow. But my competitors ran rather fast. My teammates’ shouts urged me forward. What made me frustrated was that I didn’t catch up with them. I was the last one to hand over the baton.
Our opponent winning narrowly, I blamed our failure on myself. “If I’d run faster, we could have won.” I murmured, burying my head, with tears of guilt rolling down my checks. Approaching me. Sara said firmly, “We all gave our best!” The team gathered around, echoing her words. So warm was I that I felt incredibly comforted. Later, we shared snacks under a tree, encouraging each other to do it better next year. We were overwhelmed with joy, broad smiles lighting up our faces. It was then that I realized victory wasn’t just about medals; it was the courage to try and the bonds we’d built. Sports Day had taught me to cherish both.
