I was a student at the University of Cincinnati's music academy, looking for something to do outside of musical harmony classes. Somehow, I found myself at a printer's office across the river in Northern Kentucky, making final edits for Ed 's small Cincinnati newspaper. It wasn't until I' d been there a few months that I realized how much Ed changed the world around him and changed my life in the process.
Ed started the paper because the local daily papers of the time turned a blind eye to some problems in the local community and gave little space to social issues affecting disadvantaged groups. Ed's paper was a small, 16-page monthly one, handed out for free in bars.
He often encouraged"non-writers" to write if they had a story to tell. Some of them were inexperienced writers. He worked with them until the words better expressed their ideas. When I turned in a story about an unpopular topic, he only asked, "Is it true " and"Does it affect people " Satisfied by my answers, he ran the story.
What drove Ed It wasn't fame, for the paper's limited resources kept him unknown; it wasn't money, for he ran the paper at a deficit (赤字) for its entire life of eight years. Indeed, more than once, I remembered him having to choose between paying his rent and paying the printer. Perhaps his real drive was revealed in a recent phone conversation. While talking about a common friend, I said, "He fought the good fight." Ed responded, "The good fight's never over." I don't believe that events make heroes; I believe heroes are the result of long-standing goodness. Ed's story proved the value of constancy(坚定不移) and expressed the significance of working for good causes for their own sake. He showed how one person, working tirelessly, could help a population get over its problems. Above all, his example showed me the necessity of making my own contributions to the causes I believe in.
24.Why did Ed set up the Cincinnati newspaper
A.To promote new writers' works.
B.To improve his printer's business.
C.To reflect overlooked social problems.
D.To find talent from disadvantaged groups.
25.What is Ed 's attitude towards storytellers like the author
A.Supportive. B.Doubtful. C.Curious. D.Picky.
26.What does the"good fight" mainly refer to
A.Overcoming financial difficulties.
B.Doing worthy and kind causes.
C.Making a name for himself.
D.Creating a big fortune.
27.Which of the following can best describe Ed
A.Proud and single-minded. B.Careful and hard-working.
C.Determined and caring. D.Patient and calm.
【答案】24.C
25.A
26.B
27.C
Ed started the paper because the local daily papers of the time turned a blind eye to some problems in the local community and gave little space to social issues affecting disadvantaged groups."Ed创办这份报纸是因为当时的当地日报对当地社区的一些问题视而不见,并且很少关注影响弱势群体的社会问题。
He often encouraged ‘non-writers' to write if they had a story to tell. Some of them were inexperienced writers. He worked with them until the words better expressed their ideas. When I turned in a story about an unpopular topic, he only asked, ‘Is it true ' and ‘Does it affect people ' Satisfied by my answers, he ran the story." 故选A。
Perhaps his real drive was revealed in a recent phone conversation. While talking about a common friend, I said, ‘He fought the good fight.' Ed responded, ‘The good fight's never over.' I don't believe that events make heroes; I believe heroes are the result of long-standing goodness. Ed's story proved the value of constancy (坚定不移) and expressed the significance of working for good causes for their own sake."
Ed's story proved the value of constancy (坚定不移) and expressed the significance of working for good causes for their own sake. He showed how one person, working tirelessly, could help a population get over its problems. Above all, his example showed me the necessity of making my own contributions to the causes I believe in."Ed的故事证明了坚持的价值,并表达了为做好事而工作的意义。

Hadedas are one of the most familiar species of birds across sub-Saharan Africa. They are known for their loud, laughing calls, which often ring out early in the morning, winning them the title of"African alarm clocks". My recently published PhD research shows that they have the"sixth sense" of remote touch(远程触觉).
We presented the birds with plates filled with soil, in which we placed several worms (虫子). To test whether hadedas were able to use remote touch, we gave them either living worms or dead worms, and made sure they weren't using hearing or smell to find the worms. The birds were able to find the moving worms quite faster than the dead ones, showing that they were able to sense vibrations(振动), and use them to find worms in the absence of any other sensory information.
When they were using remote touch, the birds found the worms faster in wetter soils. However, if the soil was in the opposite conditions, hadedas lost their ability to sense living worms faster than dead ones. Instead, they had to hunt by chance. In the wild, this would mean taking twice as long to find the same number of worms, or ending the day with less than half of the worms when they could use remote touch.
Early studies have shown that hadedas are spreading to more places that have more farms and bigger neighborhoods. Our research further suggests that one of the driving factors is that they need soil with enough water to be able to seek food. Their dependence on wet soil could have big effects on their population in periods of long dry seasons. However, in sub-Saharan Africa, droughts and heat waves are becoming increasingly common and last longer as a result of warming weather. Thus, even common garden birds like hadedas would have a tough time in years to come.
Our results therefore suggest that it's important to consider birds' sensory requirements from their environments, particularly for levels of water in the areas where they hunt. Though calls like those of the hadedas may be troublesome at times, we hope that we won't oversleep and miss this particular alarm call from nature.
28.What enables hadedas to figure out the worms' presence
A.Their sharp hearing. B.The use of unique calls.
C.The ability to catch smells. D.Their sense of movement.
29.What is mentioned about hadedas' remote touch
A.It works poorly in dry soils.
B.It helps them avoid risky areas.
C.It is more effective in the wild.
D.It requires teamwork among hadedas.
30.What does the author mainly imply about hadedas in paragraph 4
A.Climate change harms their survival.
B.They slowly adapt to extreme weather.
C.Wet soil will remain plentiful for them.
D.They have to change diet in the near future.
31.What does the author expect the results to raise awareness about
A.Changing present farming methods.
B.Safeguarding birds' living conditions.
C.Applying unique calls in bird training.
D.Reducing noise pollution from humans.
【答案】28.D
29.A
30.A
31.B
The birds were able to find the moving worms quite faster than the dead ones, showing that they were able to sense vibrations (振动), and use them to find worms in the absence of any other sensory information."
When they were using remote touch, the birds found the worms faster in wetter soils." 故选A。
Their dependence on wet soil could have big effects on their population in periods of long dry seasons. However, in sub-Saharan Africa, droughts and heat waves are becoming increasingly common and last longer as a result of warming weather. Thus, even common garden birds like hadedas would have a tough time in years to come." 故选A。
Our results therefore suggest that it's important to consider birds' sensory requirements from their environments, particularly for levels of water in the areas where they hunt. Towering artificial ice reservoirs(人造冰库) called"ice stupas" have appeared since 2014 as a practicable means of storing water for land or crops in dry and high mountain villages. They are made by sending water through the air during the winter to fall and freeze into giant, icy, rock-like structures. The pipes and fountains needed to make these great ice towers are relatively inexpensive and easily available, which means farmers can apply them without outside aid.
Now, experiments with an automated system(自动化系统) have shown that building these giant ice towers, which top 30 meters, can be achieved with about one-tenth of the amount of water manual(手动的) methods use, according to new research.
In the high, dry region of Ladakh, India, that improvement could make all the difference. The original, manual approach to ice stupa building typically lets the water flow all winter. Most of the water does not freeze and is lost. Cold temperatures help ice stupas grow, but too-cold temperatures freeze water in the delivery pipes.
"In Ladakh right now, many of the ice structures have stopped being built not because the farmers chose to stop watering. It is because the weather chose to stop working," said Suryanarayanan Balasubramanian, a glaciologist. The best solution is to flow the water away from the pipes before it freezes. The new automated approach avoids blocked pipes, using models and weather data to choose the most suitable water spray time, duration and flow rate to build ice stupas effectively.
Researchers tested the new automated system that controlled how much water was sent, when, and for how long, based on models and weather data. Previous results from drone measurements found the automated system used up 13% of the amount of water used by the manual fountain system to create ice stupas that delivered the same or more melt water. The automated system also did not need to be maintained and repaired in winter.
"We have just touched the surface of these structures, because we only talk about Ladakh. But this is not just about this one location. It could be applied to many places, some of which are much, much colder. We don't really know what the upper size limit is," Balasubramanian said.

D.To find a reliable source of drinking water.
33.What is the advantage of the automated system over the manual one
A.Easier operation. B.Cheaper materials.

32.What is the primary purpose of"ice stupas"
A.To generate renewable clean energy.
B.To cool down and wet the environment.
C.To store agricultural water for dry areas.
D.To find a reliable source of drinking water.
33.What is the advantage of the automated system over the manual one
A.Easier operation. B.Cheaper materials.
C.Wider applications. D.Higher building efficiency.
34.What can we infer from Balasubramanian's words in the last paragraph
A.Ice stupas are still a short-term solution.
B.The possibilities of ice stupas are endless.
C.The new system's performance is uncertain.
D.More functions of ice stupas are to be explored.
35.What does the text mainly talk about
A.The environmental impact of ice stupas.
B.The technology used to fight water waste.
C.The development of artificial ice reservoirs.
D.The challenges faced by farmers in dry areas.

Though calls like those of the hadedas may be troublesome at times, we hope that we won't oversleep and miss this particular alarm call from nature."

Dear James,
I am awfully sorry that you are so stressed out before the examinations that you are suffering from sleep problems. Here are some suggestions for you to relieve stress.
To begin with, keep a balance between study and rest. You are supposed to take regular exercise to keep fit and energetic. Additionally, it's highly recommended to have brief conversations with close friends or trustworthy teachers, from whom you are meant to get confidence and comfort. Most importantly you should find out your own strengths and weaknesses in your study, learn to be more organized and make a regular learning schedule.
Please take my suggestions into account.I'm convinced everything will be better and may you succeed in the examinations.
Yours,
Li Hua.
