In the Chinese film Ne Zha 2, many treasures of ancient cultural relics are brought to life. Let’s
take a closer look at these cultural elements and the real-life prototypes (原型) that inspired them.
Seven-colored lotus
In Ne Zha 2, the seven-colored lotus (莲花) plays a critical role in reconstructing the bodies of the
heroes, Ne Zha and Ao Bing. This concept is inspired by the Boshan censer (香炉), a 2,000-year-old
bronze burner housed at the Hebei Museum.
Barrier beasts
If you’ve seen both Ne Zha films, you’re sure to remember the lovely and charming barrier
beasts—funny creatures that serve as guardians. These creatures bear a striking similarity to ancient
relics from the Sanxingdui culture.
Tianyuan tripod
The Tianyuan tripod in the film is a key tool in the Jade Xu Palace. Its design draws inspiration
from the bronze tripods used during the Shang and Zhou dynasties. The tripod was a symbol of power
and status in ancient China, often used in ceremonies.
Jade Xu Palace
When Ne Zha travels to the Jade Xu Palace, a group of birds fly in the sky, with two of them
landing on the palace roof. This scene is inspired by the famous painting “Ruihe Tu” by Emperor
Huizong of the Song Dynasty, Zhao Ji. Zhao Ji painted this scene on silk, symbolizing his blessing for
the country and its people.
21. What aspect of Ne Zha 2 is introduced in the text
A. Its plot. B. Its popularity.
C. Its creative techniques. D. Its cultural sources
22. What do we know about the barrier beasts in Ne Zha 2
A. They are widely used in ceremonies. B. They are similar to Sanxingdui relics
C. They are symbols of power and status. D. They are blessings from an emperor.
23. What is the inspiration of the scene in Jade Xu Palace
A. A bronze tool. B . A historical site.
C. A famous artwork. D. A romantic story.

Moments before heading to teach a class, I received a call from my sister: My mother was going
into emergency surgery and might not make it through the night. Five minutes later, I stepped in front
of 68 MBA students to lecture without missing a beat, and even stayed a few minutes after to answer
questions. I held strong until I got in the car to drive home. That’s when I fell to pieces. I fought to see
the road through my tears as I spoke with my travel agent to book the next flight out. My mother pulled
through the surgery.
My response to my mother’s crisis was in line with my deep, long-term fear of showing weakness
or admitting to feeling overwhelmed. As the youngest daughter from a Vietnamese refugee family,
showcasing my strength seemed the best way to honor my parents’ and siblings’ sacrifices that have
given me a better life in the United States. I did not want colleagues to question my capabilities or
friends and family to see me as anything less than unshakable.
The truth was, I desired to pause, to catch my breath, to simply say, “I’m struggling.” I longed to
be weak. I wanted to acknowledge my mistakes, to honor a range of emotions, and to ask for help.
Cautiously, I began to reveal some of my struggles to my personal and professional circles, watching
closely for reactions. Some looked down on my experience. To my great relief, a few listened without
judgment and respected my boundaries and coping process. They offered information about counseling
services, legal help, support groups, and hotlines. They helped me see that even professionals in
leadership positions can need support.
To anyone bearing the weight of constant strength, hear this: True strength isn’t about never
hesitating. It’s about having the courage to admit when we’re struggling, reaching out for support, and
having the strength to piece ourselves back together and move on.
24. What did the author do after hanging up the phone
A. She drove to look after her mother. B. She quickly booked a flight ticket.
C. She kept calm and stayed on duty. D. She hesitated to start her teaching.
25. Why did the author showcase her strength
A. To help her mother make a full recovery. B. To prove she lived a good and happy life.
C. To give herself an advantage in promotion. D. To avoid possible doubts over her abilities.
26. How did some people help the author
A. By persuading her to win leaders’ support. B. By helping her realize seeking help is normal.
C. By listening to her and giving judgments. D. By sharing similar experiences with her.
27. What does the author want to convey in the text
A. Strength does not mean hiding struggles. B. Strength gives us more courage to grow.
C. Comparing yourself with others is harmful. D. Worldly labels block personal development.

At first glance, the scientist Charles Darwin and the poet Emily Dickinson would seem to have
little in common. In Natural Magic, literary scholar Renee Bergland seeks to convince the reader
otherwise, interweaving the lives, work, and history of these two towering figures of the 19th century.
In doing so, Bergland shows definitively that they shared deep sensibilities about the natural world.
They were both keen observers in their own home gardens. For both, the “magic” of nature could be
found in the physical and material rather than the supernatural. They found nature to be a place
enchanted by its own mysteries, joys, and sorrows.
Taking the form of a joint biography (传记), Natural Magic alternates between Darwin and
Dickinson over the course of 16 chapters, progressing simultaneously (同时地 ) in time. While
Bergland offers comprehensive descriptions, building on the extensive work of other biographers and
scholars, the book’s own magic shines in the conversation created between its subjects’ bodies of work.
When viewed as part of a historical dialogue, Darwin and Dickinson amplify (阐述) each other’s work,
revealing the science in her poetry and the poetry in his science.
Natural Magic further situates both writers in the history of science as it developed from “natural
philosophy” into specialized disciplines throughout the 19th century. Bergland lays extensive
groundwork for the social and cultural forces that shaped each thinker in a time when the sciences and
arts were more closely connected.
Bergland herself displays moments of beauty in her writing, particularly in her vivid descriptions
of the wonder of scientific discoveries in the 19th century. “Changing angles of sunlight, the
unchanging stars, and... the bright colors of the great auroras lightened up the vastness of planetary
space,” she writes, for example.
Ultimately, the book offers readers a historical and biographical look into the magic offered by
the natural world as reflected in the works of two major 19th-century thinkers. Bergland concludes
that in a time of climate crisis, we must recover this kind of dialogue across the sciences and the arts,
emphasizing our shared sense of wonder in nature.
28. What does Bergland aim to demonstrate about Darwin and Dickinson
A. Their inborn talents. B. Their great achievements.
C. Their unseen commonalities. D. Their literary background.
29. What can be learned concerning Natural Magic
A. It contradicts other scholars’ views. B. It is a co-authored masterpiece.
C. It creates dialogues between works. D. It focuses on natural philosophy.
30. Which best describes Bergland’s language in describing the wonder of scientific discoveries
A. Poetic. B. Academic. C. Humorous. D. Straightforward.

31. Which of the following might Bergland agree with
A. History should never be forgotten. B. The dawn of science came too late.
C. Wonder is the beginning of wisdom. D. Nature should be treated with awe.

Animals hibernate (冬眠) to conserve energy during cold weather or when food becomes scarce,
slowing their heart rate and dropping their body temperature to as low as 5℃. This is only survivable
if their blood continues to flow efficiently and supply oxygen to the body.
We already know that red blood cells change shape to fit different pressures and blood vessel
sizes. To investigate if something like this happens in the cells of hibernating animals to keep blood
flowing, Gerald Kerth at the University of Greifswald in Germany and his colleagues turned to bats.
They analyzed hundreds of thousands of red blood cells from common noctule bats, which hibernate
and Egyptian fruit bats, which don’t, along with cells from people.
The researchers found that for all three species, red blood cells became less flexible and stickier
as temperatures dropped from 37℃ to 23℃. But when they cooled the cells even further to 10℃, the
bat cells continued this metamorphosis, whereas the human cells did not.
Indeed, the bat cells---even those of non-hibernating bats, which probably maintained the
evolutionary capacity---continued to become thick, stiff and functional even at very low temperatures.
This might be slowing down the cells as they pass through the tiny vessels in the muscles and lungs,
making them highly efficient at exchanging gases, like oxygen, throughout the body.
“It is like how when you take your time at the supermarket instead of being rushed, you can really
fill up your basket,” says Kerth. Exactly how this structural change happens is still unclear, but the
team guesses that the mechanical properties of the bat red blood cell membranes (细胞膜) play a key
role.
The findings suggest that drugs could one day include human red blood cell membranes to imitate
the way bat membranes react to the cold, says Kerth. In the more distant future, hibernation could also
allow for efficient long-distance space travel, requiring minimal food and other resources while
preserving mental health during the journey. “There are benefits of putting humans at low temperature
during space flight,” says Kerth.
32. What did Gerald Kerth’s study focus on
A. Blood flow. B. Red blood cells.
C. Blood vessel sizes. D. Different pressures
33. What does the underlined word “metamorphosis” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Movement. B. Growth. C. Damage. D. Change.

34. Why does Kerth mention shopping at a supermarket
A. To prove the evolutionary capacity of bats. B. To illustrate the efficiency of exchanging gases.
C. To indicate how the structural change happens. D. To show the role of red blood cell membranes.
35. How will hibernation help long-space travel
A. By reducing resource consumption. B. By speeding up astronauts’ travel.
C. By offering astronauts resources. D. By maintaining astronauts’ overall health.

Why People May Stare at You
You may have experienced the situation where someone staring at you, such as when you’re
quietly seated on a bus, only to find that the person across from you is looking at your feet. Did you
put on two different shoes No, you check your shoes — both are the same. ___36___
A new study by Hannah Scott and colleagues from the University of London suggested that people
stare because faces, especially the eyes, provide many useful non-verbal clues about a person’s mental
state. ___37___ Observing what others look at offers a glimpse into their thoughts.
___38___ The study also found that people may focus on others’ lips during talks. If you feel
someone’s gaze on your mouth while speaking, it’s likely not an indication of romantic interest, but
rather that they might not hear you well. Similarly, people may look at your hands when you gesture.
As they may be trying to understand your actions when you are talking or performing a task.
The study showed that people tend to direct their gaze at the part of the body that provides the
most information. ___39___ They get the audience to focus on their faces while performing hand tricks.
This technique helps switch attention from their hands during card tricks or coin magic.
Scott’s study concluded that people are not naturally biased to focus on someone’s face. Instead,
they are drawn to the body parts that provide the most relevant information. ___40___ But when
someone is performing a manual task, it’s the hands that draw the gaze. This also explains why
magicians often talk to engage their audience’s attention on their faces while performing tricks with
their hands.
A. So, what causes such stares
B. But it’s not just eyes that draw stares.
C. If someone is speaking, the eyes attract attention.
D. This explains how magicians apply misdirection.
E. The eyes contain socially relevant information.
F. Sometimes, such intense stares can make us feel uneasy.
G. The way people talk can also attract stares during conversations.

Today was Community Service Day at school. Maya’s class was going to make cards for the
seniors living in a nursing home. It was also the first day Maya would be wearing her leg brace (腿支
架) to school, which was designed to help her walk more steadily and smoothly.
It was a cold autumn morning, Maya looked down, feeling embarrassed. To make it lovelier, she
had delicately decorated the brace with pretty butterfly patterns. Still, she was unsure about others’
reaction. All morning at school, kids kept glancing at her brace. To her relief, they didn’t say anything.
In the classroom, Maya was drawing little green buds (芽) and pretty flowers when her friend
Samir came over and sat by her. She felt his eyes fixed on her brace and heard him asking, “What’s
that for ” Not knowing what to say, Maya pretended she didn’t hear him. After a few seconds of
awkwardness, she glanced back at him, and found that he looked a little sad.
After lunch, the class set off. The nursing home was on a small hill and all of them walked there
happily along the path. Maya found that the brace did make it easier for her to walk up.
Maya and Samir were paired up with a lady who was 83 years old. There at the end of the hall in
a wheelchair, with a big smile on her face, sat the lady, wearing a pink coat, with red lipstick and
beautiful earrings. She looked bright and full of life. Moving flexibly and fast towards Maya and Samir,
she greeted first. “I’m Joan, ” she said cheerfully, “Glad to meet you. ”
Maya and Samir handed her the cards they made. Joan looked at Samir’s card carefully and spoke
with admiration, “You’ve written a poem! That’s so artistic!” Samir’s face reddened with shyness.
Then Joan turned to Maya’s picture. “The first flowers of spring!” she cried in delight. “You really
have a gift for using color!” she said. Clearly, Joan’s praise added great power into Maya.

AI in my eyes
In today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape, artificial intelligence (AI) plays a crucial
role in shaping various aspects of our lives. It has truly become an integral part of our lives. In
transportation, self-driving cars are gradually emerging. In education, it offers customized learning
resources. And it powers voice assistants, enabling us to control devices hands-free.
In my eyes, though AI boosts efficiency and convenience, it may cause concerns like job
displacement and privacy issues. We should regulate and utilize AI properly to maximize its benefits
while minimizing risks.
In conclusion, AI is a powerful tool that can reshape our world for the better if we handle it
with care.
读后续写 (One possible version)
In a sudden wave of bravery Maya asked, “What’s it like being in a wheelchair ” “It helps
me get around,” Joan said simply. Then, grinning, she added, “You’d be surprised at how fast I can
go in this thing!” Right then, she moved the wheelchair across the room, turning around, back and
forth. And what surprised Maya most was that she didn’t detect any pity or embarrassment from her.
Then Maya looked up and found Joan was smiling, eyes purposefully resting on her brace. It was
then that a spark of power was lit up deep inside Maya. That afternoon, the three of them had a
pleasant talk over lots of things until it was dusk.
Deeply impressed by Joan, Maya offered to sit beside Samir on the bus ride back home. “Joan
is great. I like her.” Samir admired. Maya nodded, lost in thought. With Joan’s wheelchair and smile
in mind, she summoned up her courage and said, “The brace keeps my toe up so I can walk better.”
“Really ” Samir looked amazed, reached out and touched it gently. “That’s super cool!” His words
were so sincere that Maya felt warm and moved. It was a reaction that she expected deep inside her
heart. Though it was autumn outside, it felt like spring for Maya. A little green bud was bursting —
she and her brace looked cool, beautiful and dynamic in her and others’ eyes.

W: We could study together. I have always wanted to learn French. Now I finally have a chance. We
can find a teacher, I’m sure we can afford it, or we can attend a French training course.
M: That sounds like a good idea.
9. W: When did you take this picture
M: About three years ago, when I was studying in Canada, these were all my classmates except the
one on the left.
W: Was he your professor But isn’t he too young to be a professor He is young.
M: He was only about 35 years old and he looked very young then. He was a good professor. We
all liked him. He was funny and liked hanging out with us.
W: You were lucky to have such a good professor. All my professors were either old men or old
ladies. Some of them were very boring.
M: Well, old professors usually have achieved a lot. I’m sure you could learn a lot from them.
W: That’s true. So did you take any other pictures in Canada I’d like to have a look at them. If you
have any.
M: Sure. But they are upstairs. I’ll get them and be right back.
10. W: And finally on TV diary, a word about some of the programs on your screens tonight. After
the news on BBC, there’s Miller and Edwards. The two comedians have saved a lot of their best
jokes for this special program, which is the last of the present series. Tonight’s show lasts an hour
instead of the usual half hour. Miller and Edwards is joined by famous actor Giles Welby, who plays
an angry motorist in one scene. Beginning tonight is Stardate 3000, an American science fiction
series. It’s been on television in the USA for the last two months and comments on the show have
been mixed. It certainly has some fine actors, but there is a limit to how much a director can do with
stories as weak as these. I’m sure I’ve seen most of the scenery before in other shows from the same
studio. Perhaps some of the money they saved on the scenery should be spent on getting some better
writers. Don’t forget that from tomorrow, TV diary is going to be at six thirty PM instead of eight
thirty for three weeks because of the tennis competitions. When the competitions finish at the start
of July, we’ll be back at our usual time, so thanks for listening.
