Albert Ei nstei n owed hi s brilli ant mi nd to havi ng a child-like sense of humour . Indeed, a number of studi es have found an associ ati on between humour and i ntelligence. Researchers i n Austri a recently di scovered that funny peopl e, parti cul arly those who enj oy dark humour, have higher IQs than thei r l ess funny fell ows. In psychol ogy we use the term“ positive humour styl e” to refer to peopl e who use humour to enhance rel ati onships and reduce confli ct . Neuropsychol ogi cal studi es have found that experi enci ng positive emoti onal states, such as j oy, fun and happi ness, i ncreases the producti on of dopami ne (多巴胺) i n the brai n. Dopami ne not only make us feel great, it al so opens up the l earni ng centres of the brai n, whi ch
enabl es and sustai ns more neural (神 经 ) connecti ons. As a result, we become more fl exibl e and creative i n our thi nki ng, and better at solvi ng probl ems. It al so boosts our worki ng memory.
Evidence suggests that humour actually bol ster feeli ngs of confidence, competence and status, maki ng funny peopl e very i nfl uenti al . Humour gets peopl e to li sten, helps communi cate messages and aids l earni ng. Iti s a powerful tool that many successful l eaders use to enhance group work and organi zati onal culture. Studi es of positive organi zati ons suggest the more fun we have at work the more productive we are, and the l ess likely we are to suffer burn-out .
Research on the use of humour i n educati on al so supports the concept that humour i s an effective aid to l earni ng. Several studi es have demonstrated that l essons that are delivered with humour are more enj oyabl e for students, and al so enhance students comprehensi on and recall of the topi c.

I don’ t remember exactly when my l ove for second-hand books began, but I remember walki ng al ong the footpaths of Ki ngs Ci rcl e, where my aunt lived, to make my bi rthday money stretch further by seei ng j ust how many Agatha Chri sti es I could buy.
For many like me, there i s a j oy that comes from l ooki ng through other peopl e’ s coll ecti ons — and often accidentally di scoveri ng the ki nds of writi ng you had not known exi sted. That i s, after all , what second-hand bookshops were created for, I thi nk.
It was i n Literati Bookshop i n Goa that I pi cked up my son Re’ s fi rst cookbook — My Learn to Cook Book, origi nally gifted to a Sherry i n 1973 by Aunty Banso and Uncl e Keki , goi ng by the i nscripti on (题字) i nside. Al so written al ongside, i n a different handwriti ng, was “ Sherry’ s fi rst cooki ng book. ” Maybe thi s was done by Sherry or her parent . I can’ t tell . What I can say i s that they did have a l ot of fun cooki ng from thi s book as Re and I did — we made baked potatoes, zoo bi scuits and fruit cakes fromthe recipes i nside.
Yashasvi Vachhani , a Mumbai -based writer and a second-hand book l over, said, “ I once pi cked up a copy of Embers by Sandor Marai whi ch had notes and thoughts written i n green i nk on the margi n (边 缘 ) . The whol e experi ence of readi ng the book was like havi ng a conversati on with the previ ous reader, agreei ng with a few poi nts, and addi ng my own thoughts. It was a great experi ence, one I still remember fondly. ”
The most preci ous second-hand book experi ence for me was receivi ng a copy of a di cti onary that my l ate father-i n-l aw had l ovi ngly saved si nce it was fi rst gifted to hi s son i n 1980 and then came to mi ne, 38 years l ater . “ I feel like a part of hi story, Mamma!”
Re said, when he read the i nscripti on i nside fromhi s grandfather to hi s father .

Perfecti oni sm and punctuality are often at odds i n the workpl ace. But accordi ng to a recent study, it i s better to submit a good-enough proj ect on ti me rather than perfecti ng it through procrasti nati on.
Researchers surveyed thousands of peopl e i n the U. S. and U. K. , i ncl udi ng managers and others whose j obs i ncl uded eval uati ng others. They presented parti cipants with the same exampl es of work, and then asked them to rate it . But fi rst, they menti oned whether it was either submitted early, right at the deadli ne or l ate.
Respondents who were told it was l ate consi stently rated the work as worse i n quality than those who were told the same work was early or on ti me. The study al so fi nds there i sn’ t much benefit to submitti ng work early si nce eval uators tended to rank work submitted before and at the deadli ne as the same quality. Furthermore, it didn’ t matter how l ate the

work was submitted, with one day or one week del ays vi ewed j ust as negatively and that remai ned the case if the empl oyee gave thei r manager advance warni ng.
A fi eld experi ment was conducted i n a high school i n Chi na that had students grade pi eces of art i n a staged contest . The art was on a pi ece of paper that al so i ncl uded the date it was submitted. Even though the kids were told to ignore all other detail s on the paper other than the art itself, the versi on submitted after the deadli ne received l ower grades. That study makes the broader poi nt that it doesn’ t really matter who set the deadli ne. In the eyes of the eval uat or, any mi ss i s a meani ngful mi ss.
However, the reason behi nd the mi ssed deadli ne mattered, researchers found. If it was due to forces beyond an empl oyee’ s control , eval uators didn’ t end up with as negative a vi ew of the work as they did when the reason was one withi n thei r control . “ If the reason why you mi ssed the deadli ne was beyond your control , you as the empl oyee should l et your manager know, ” Magli o says. “ That seems to be one of the few i nstances i n whi ch peopl e cut you a break. ”
12 .What does the underli ned word “ procrasti nati on” i n paragraph 1 mean
A.Editi ng. B.Del ay.

13 .What can be concl uded fromthe research result
A.Submitti ng work early earns a boost i n eval uati ons.
B.Pre- communi cated del ays l ead to positive eval uati ons.
C.Mi ni mal del ays get better eval uati ons than l ong del ays.
D.Late work i s j udged more negatively than on-ti me submi ssi ons.
14 .What does the author want to show by menti oni ng the fi eld experi ment i n Chi na
A.The art itself rather than other detail s counts.
B.Kids tend to j udge submi ssi ons more obj ectively.
C.A peer-to-peer eval uati on can be an i nformative tool .
D.The research fi ndi ng holds true across age and culture.
15 .What can be i mpli ed fromthe l ast paragraph

Most peopl e connect runni ng with speed. It i s often regarded as an exerci se that l eaves runners breathl ess and ti red when they fi ni sh. On the other hand, when someone runs sl owly, they might feel like they are not putti ng i n enough effort . 16 Sl ow j oggi ng, a l ei surely formof runni ng, can be a benefi ci al additi on to your runni ng routi ne.
17 For a competitive marathon runner, a sl ow speed will be very different from that of someone who only goes on qui ck daily j ogs around thei r neighborhood. Sl ow j oggi ng can actually be defi ned as the speed at whi ch you can easily carry on a conversati on with someone whil e runni ng for a l ong ti me. If you measure your speed for a five-kil ometer race, sl owj oggi ng will usually be around two mi nutes sl ower per kil ometer . 18
There are some tips for you to start your sl owj oggi ng. 19 Thi s i ncl udes taki ng shorter, qui cker steps — about 180 per mi nute — and l andi ng on the mid-foot rather than the heel . Runni ng i s an activity that can be hard on muscl es and bones, especi ally if you keep a
consi stent speed for a l ong peri od. Sl owi ng your speed helps prevent i nj uri es by spreadi ng stress to different areas of your body and reduci ng the effect on j oi nts. Moreover, sl ow j oggi ng i s a good exerci se to strengthen the heart and l ungs. 20 Perhaps most i mportantly, j oggi ng at a sl ower speed all ows you to enj oy run more. If you are i nterested i n getti ng any of these benefits, it’ s certai nly worth givi ng sl ow runni ng a try.
A.The idea of “ sl ow” can differ greatly between persons.
B.However, different runni ng styl es have different benefits.
C.It al so helps i n burni ng fat more effi ci ently i n your body.
D.For most peopl e, thi s speed i s j ust slightly faster than walki ng.
E.Recovery fromsl owj oggi ng can l ast fromseveral days to weeks.
F.Despite i s sl ow speed, keepi ng proper body’ s positi on i s i mportant .
G.Runni ng at a sl ow speed might give the i mpressi on that ti me passes more sl owly.

31.Dear teachers and students
As is known to all, regular physical activity not only improves physical health but also
reduces stress and enhances academic performance. To enhance our overall well-being as well
as in response to our country's National Fitness Program, our school is launching a
comprehensive sports initiative.
To achieve this goal,we propose three practical steps.Firstly,we can make full use of
school sports facilities by joining morning runs.Secondly, sign up for sports clubs like clubs
related to dancing, swimming,or playing basketball.Every movement counts.
Let's take action together!By incorporating exercise into our daily routines,we can
develop lifelong healthy habits.Join us in creating a more active and energetic school
environment!

32.Paragraph1(参考范文)25分
Seeing Sara's trouble, her teacher asked her to come to him and showed her a beautiful glass
cup.Sara had never seen such a beautiful glass piece before. But suddenly, the cup slipped from
her teacher's hands and broke into pieces.A wave of sadness spread over her face. Her teacher
looked at her face and said softly,"Beauty lies in imperfection and welcoming imperfection is
an act of self-love and acceptance."Then he began repairing the cup with golden glue, making
it even more beautiful than before and gave the cup to Sara as a gift.
Paragraph 2:
Looking at the well-repaired cup and reflecting on her teacher's words,Sara decided to paint
without worrying about perfection. As Sara let go of her anxiety, her painting became more
beautiful. On the competition day,Sara accidentally spilled water on the painting before
submitting it,but instead of panicking, she calmly added raindrops to her artwork, making it
even better than before. When the results were announced,Sara won the second prize. She was
happy about the result but, more importantly, she learned a valuable lesson:Being perfect all the
time isn't necessary, because beauty lies in imperfection, and accepting small faults makes us
human.
