I'm at a stage when I enjoy taking my young daughter to many birthday parties. I love watching her chat with her classmates, wolf down the cake and run around in excitement from a sugar rush. But I fear the loot bags(礼品袋) filled with tiny plastic gifts that bring momentary joy but are quickly forgotten, often hardly lasting through the car ride home.
Those lo ot bags cause my eco-anxiety. Once I became a parent, I had no idea my home would become overrun with plastic gifts. Besides the thrown-away lo ot bag items, there are other plastic bits and pieces used for toys or superhero characters. This impossibly small plastic hair tie belongs to which doll What about this spoon the size of my pinkie (小指)fingernail It's all just waiting to be thrown in the trash.
For my daughter's fifth birthday, I had an idea to ease some of my plastic stress. She decorated a cardboard box as a treasure box. We walked around our house gathering small items that she hardly played with and filled the box with them. At her party, guests could take an item or two from the box. It felt good to do something about my eco-anxiety and see those tiny plastic things leave our home.
What if parents agreed that loot bags are unnecessary and taught children that the party itself is the gift This applies to adults too. At work conferences, I wonder what happens to the cups, pens and other small gifts. With climate issues appearing, saying“no” to these items could positively impact our planet and mental health and illustrate the importance of reusing and sharing what we have already owned.
I' ll do what I can to teach my daughter how to be kinder to the environment. And I hope her generation will treat the planet better, calling for change and avoiding the“disposable”culture they live in.

C. By sharing unused small items with guests.
D. By teaching kids to remove family rubbish.
26. What is the author's attitude to giving gifts at work conferences
A. Negative. B. Doubtful. C. Optional. D. Positive.
27. What is the best title for this text
A. Fun Birthdays: A Parent's Creative Idea
B. Green Birthdays: A Parent's Eco-choice
C. Birthday Celebrations: A Parent's Effort
D. Plastic-free Parties: A Parent's Concern

When you finally finish your homework and get to relax, what do you do Do you lie on your bed and scroll through(滚屏) your phone Many people find that this kind of entertainment only brings boredom and emptiness.
Contrary to what many people may think, play isn't just a waste of time. Having the ability to play and relax meaningfully during your leisure time is important.
“Leisure doesn't improve quality of life unless one knows how to use it effectively,”James Wallman, the author of Time and How to Spend It, told CNBC Make It, explaining that some experiences are“junk experiences” while others are like“superfoods”.
The“superfood” activities put you into a state of“flow”, which is“about being in the present zone and really enjoying yourself”, added Wallman. Any pleasurable activity that truly challenges you has the potential to lead to the flow state.
These“superfoods” help you achieve a higher“leisure quotient (LQ)”(玩商). LQ is an index(指数) used to describe one’ s ability to relax and play. A high LQ usually means that a person has good control over their life, knows how to develop their potential and keeps a balanced lifestyle that makes them healthier and happier, according to China Daily.
Psychological(心理学的) research shows that people with high LQ scores feel happier and generally avoid depression and other mental illnesses. Meanwhile, Kenichi Ohmae, aJapanese management expert, points out that those who can play will succeed.
Instead of doing passive activities like scrolling through short videos, people with highLQ scores actively select activities that suit their interests and strengths, giving them continuous positive feedback.
According to Wallman, examples of this positive feedback include: a memorable story you can share with others, a new skill or a different world view, greater engagement with the real world, and improved relationships or a higher social position.
Next time you find yourself bored with nothing to do, try engaging in some experiences that can benefit you or add to your life. It's never too late to improve your LQ!
28. What kind of activities are“superfood” activities according to James Wallman
A. Those that make you energetic.
B. Those that help you find something new.
C. Those that are both enjoyable and challenging.
D. Those that cause you to feel excited for a while.
29. What does the LQ index measure
A. The potential to have a successful life.
B. The ability to manage stress effectively.
C. The ability to balance health and happiness.
D. The skills in meaningful play and relaxation.
30. What can people with a high LQ usually do
A. Follow the same world view as others.
B. Make life meaningful, enjoyable and healthy.
C. Select activities which suit their interests only.
D. Avoid depression and mental illnesses completely.
31. What is the text about
A. The debate about the use of LQ.
B. The importance of LQ and its effects.
C. Different ways to improve a person's LQ.
D. The connection between LQ and happiness.
D
Do you know what crown shyness(树冠羞避) is When you look upwards in the middle of a forest, you might notice breaks in the. canopy, and you' ll see branches and leaves stopping just shy of the neighbouring trees. This is called crown shyness. It's a way of social distancing for trees to keep themselves healthy, according to Meg Lowman, a tree canopy expert. Since trees fight for sunlight and water, it's important that they position their canopies strategically to increase as much the success of their leaves as possible.
Having some distance between treetops can lower the chance of a tree losing its leaves by brushing against neighbouring trees in the wind. The distance can also curb the spread of harmful insects and disease. Tree diseases range far and wide. Some are spread by insects, and some are the insects themselves, creating a disease in the canopy. By separating themselves from others, trees can avoid getting sick.
While crown shyness is mostly observable in tropical(热带的) trees, the same lessons are applicable to other trees, like evergreens. Trees that have more space grow bigger and healthier.
Healthy trees cost less to maintain, provide better cool places, and clean water more effectively. If a tree has died of insects or disease, Lowman says it's important to consider what is at risk before cutting down a tree. “We might lose a lot of native species(物种) in our backyard, our community, or our ecosystem. Trees let insects search for food in them; birds nest in them; and other plants live in them,” she says. “Trees are the ultimate support.”
“We can learn from trees,” Lowman says. “To be good neighbours, to be good citizens, and to always have that beautiful bow available to people or biodiversity (生物多样性) that might need us too.”
32. Which statement actually describes crown shyness
A. It only occurs in tropical rainforest.
B. It results from trees' lack of sunlight.
C. It is a self-protective strategy for trees.
D. It is a cooperative behaviour among trees.
33. What is the closest meaning of the underlined word“curb” in paragraph 2
A. Control. B. Keep. C. Increase. D. Speed.
34. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A. The reason for keeping biodiversity.
B. The importance of maintaining tree health.
C. The environmental protection value of forests.
D. The relationship between trees and other species.
35. What lesson can we learn from trees in the last paragraph
A. We should keep a certain distance from others.
B. We should focus on our own development first.
C. We should try to be as self-sufficient as possible.
D. We should respect and get along well with others.

Very often mental health is not the goal of practicing martial arts, but sports psychology has established a positive link between physical and mental toughness. 36
The first benefit of martial arts for your mental toughness is that they help with building confidence thanks to the skills acquired and the ability to defend yourself and those who are close to you in extreme situations. 37 If you show confidence, you will be more likely to be hired for your dream job, have a successful public speech or even gain an advantage in interpersonal relationships.
38 So controlling your confidence is the next important mental skill, by which you will prevent your emotions and temptations(诱惑) from controlling yourself. Your every movement needs to be reasonable rather than rushed and emotional. Needless to say, this mental toughness is going to be transferred (转移) to your everyday life. And that added mental control is going to be of great help to you.
Besides, martial arts, which can be extremely challenging, will make you more determined. 39 No matter how tired your body and mind are and no matter how bored you are with a routine, determínation requires you to continue pushing yourself. If you don't give up, your success won't be limited to just martial arts. The mental toughness and the right mindset will also benefit you in other aspects. 40
A. Where should you start to learn martial arts
B. You may be required to keep moving forward.
C. Emotions are a serious weakness in certain situations.
D. Confidence does play an important role in your daily life.
E. How will martial arts make you mentally tough on earth
F. You may find determination greatly helps you to succeed in life.

Wang Ximeng went to study painting at the Royal Palace when he was still a teenager.Since he displayed great talent, Emperor Huizong of the Northern Song Dynasty decided to teach him the skills of painting in person. Many experts believe 59 the emperor asked him to draw might be this work. They say he 60 (ask) to draw boundless rivers and mountains instead of everyday life. Jane decided to wear an old dress that had been her favorite for many years but had become a little too short for her now. “I’ ll ask the tailor(裁缝) to increase the length,” Jane said to herself. The tailor, however, refused to do so. “The dress is too old. Any change won't work for it. Besides, I have too many other orders. My hands are full.”
Disappointed, she walked out of the tailor's shop. “What am I to do ” she thought.
Just as she was about to go home, she saw a lady getting out of a car not far away and walking toward the bank in a hurry. The lady opened her handbag to take out some papers, and her wallet fell on the ground. Unaware of it, she went into the bank.
Jane ran and picked up the wallet. There were so many people inside the bank that she decided to wait on the steps. After a long time, the lady came out. Jane walked over and handed her the wallet that she had lost. The lady couldn't believe it. The little girl had been waiting for her for so long to return the wallet. Jane was so delighted that she thanked the lady again and again. She couldn't wait to see her new dress and imagined how beautiful it would be. The next day, Jane hurried to the shop with a big smile. When she entered, she saw a beautiful dress with a fresh design, shining in the sunlight. The lady smiled, “I made this especially for you. I hope it fits you well.” Jane tried it on. It was perfect. She felt like a princess in the dress. She turned around, feeling the soft cloth against her skin. She knew this dress was something specific.
On Saturday, Jane went to Betty's birthday party in the newly designed dress. Her friends were amazed at how pretty she looked. They gathered around her, admiring her dress and asking where she'd got it. Betty was happy to see Jane in a lovely dress and hugged her tightly, saying, “You look fancy!” Jane felt confident and pleased. She knew her kindness had been rewarded. M: Well, we have social get-togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings.
W: Could you tell me something about the language evenings
M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages— you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. (Text 10)
W: Hi, my name is Sarah and I'd like to tell you about my favorite hobby, which is playing the guitar. I started learning to play the guitar about a year ago. At first, it was a bit challenging because I had never played any musical instrument before, but with practice and determination, I' ve made a lot of progress. I take guitar lessons once a week with a teacher who teaches me different skills. It's really helpful to have someone guide me. In addition to my lessons, I also spend a lot of time practicing on my own. I usually practice for an hour every day. Sometimes, I play along with my favorite songs. Playing the guitar has not only improved my musical skills, but also has helped me develop patience. It's a great way for me to relax and express myself creatively. I hope to continue playing the guitar and maybe even join a band someday.
