South Baltimore is surrounded by water, highways, and train tracks. It’s also often thought of as a place to avoid—folks are taught to be careful of or even avoid South Baltimore. “People think South Baltimore is a place filled with danger. It’s not. It’s just we’re surrounded by dangerous things,” says Taysia, 17.
Taysia is part of a group of student activists fighting against a very different kind of danger in their neighborhood: air pollution and climate change. Lots of trucks with their noise pass through the neighborhood. South Baltimore is also home to a junkyard where they crush (压碎)cars, an old landfill, chemical plants, and mountains of coal. These are not the communities anyone wants.
The residents of South Baltimore are breathing polluted air today. Coal releases a black dust that’s small enough to get into people’s lungs. It can cause disease and death if you’re breathing it day after day. The mountains of coal are the focus of a growing opposition movement called Free Your Voice, led by South Baltimore teenagers.
The teens of Free Your Voice are taking on a big opponent (对手): the massive transportation company CSX, which transports more than 8 million tons of coal through South Baltimore annually. CSX makes billions of dollars a year.
The teens went door to door, warning their neighbors about the dangers of the coal transportation. Not everyone was on board at first. “We were talking to people and that’s just like, ‘You’re a kid! Like this is not gonna change, it’s been happening forever.’” Taysia says.
Meanwhile, the students spent the summer using sticky paper to gather samples of dust from all over the neighborhood to prove that the dust was from coal and to pinpoint which parts of the neighborhood were most affected.
The goal is to eventually get the state regulators to deny the permit that CSX needs to operate, or at least require the company to enclose all the coal, or at the very least put water onto all of it so there’s less dust blowing around. And the state is considering all of those requests.
4. How did people describe South Baltimore according to Taysia
A. Wealthy. B. Dangerous. C. Peaceful. D. Inclusive.
5. What is the main focus of the opposition movement called Free Your Voice
A. The junkyard. B. The old landfill.
C. The chemical plants. D. The coal transportation.
6. Why did some people in the neighborhood initially doubt the students’ efforts
A. They believed the pollution was harmless.
B. They trusted CSX’s environmental practices.
C. They had no awareness of the pollution and climate change.
D. They thought the students were too young to make a change.
7. What method did the students use to gather evidence of coal-related pollution
A. Conducting surveys. B. Distributing leaflets.
C. Using sticky paper for dust samples. D. Organizing protests.

More than 170,000 people in California are unhoused. Even as the state has poured resources into fighting against the problem, the number of people without homes has ticked upward in recent years. On the surface, the state has one key advantage for people without a reliable roof over their heads: relatively consistent and livable weather. So one of my first thoughts when I heard news of a horricane attacking Los Angeles was just “What will happen to the city’s homeless population ”
City agencies quickly took action. As it became clear that the Los Angeles region could experience an extreme downpour and subsequent flooding, outreach teams fanned out across the river bank and dam areas across the city that have become home to a significant unhoused population, offering support to move them into shelters and motels (汽车旅馆).
Despite that, it’s obvious that the effects of climate change will hit the most vulnerable (脆弱的) hardest. We see this globally as extreme weather events hit countries that have contributed the least to the problem.
The most notable connection between climate change and the US housing crisis is the threat extreme weather poses to unhoused people. More unhoused people are affected as climate change drives increasingly unpredictable weather. People without homes know how to respond to expected seasonal events. But events like a near-hurricane in Los Angeles or a wildfire in ‘Maui can catch populations with limited access to information off guard.
Another link worth considering is the way in which climate change creates more homelessness and further stresses on housing systems. Hurricane Katrina, for example, displaced 800, 000 people. Four years later, 12,000 people remained without shelter.
Housing has been — and will continue to be — a key issue in Maui too as it recovers from the wildfire that killed more than 100 people. Maui has already had a housing crisis, the result of a high cost of living driven in large part by the tourism industry. And, now, many more are left looking for places to stay. Ashley Kelly, the chief operating officer at Hawaii’s Family Life Center, said: “Finding housing for any new clients is just not possible right now.”
8. What contributes to the increase of the unhoused population in California
A. Its mild weather.
B. Its inclusive local culture.
C. Its limited basic facilities.
D Its relaxed state policies.
9. What did outreach teams do in response to the hurricane in Los Angeles
A. They built dams to prevent flooding.
B. They moved homeless people to safe places.
C. They sought low-cost housing from city agencies.
D. They surrounded the river bank to keep people away.
10. Which word can best describe Maui’s housing circumstances now according to Ashley Kelly
A. Mysterious. B. Exceptional. C. Changeable. D. Difficult.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. Ways of Americans relocating disaster-affected populations.
B. The significance of timely weather updates for the homeless.
C. The link between climate change and the housing crisis in the US.
D. Approaches of homeless Americans to dealing with natural disasters.

Siesta is a Spanish word referring to a nap or rest break usually after lunch. The word “siesta” comes from the Latin base “sexta“, which means sixth and refers to the sixth hour, or “sexta hora”, of daylight.
By definition, a siesta takes place six hours after dawn, if the sun rises at 7 am, the “sexta hora” would take place just after noon. However, most people do not time their siesta so literally. Traditionally, a siesta takes place after lunch in the mid afternoon. A small Spanish town called Ador, which still practices a daily siesta, closes all businesses between 2 pm and 5 pm each day. Historically, Spanish companies that built a two-hour break into the workday schedule made the working day end around 8 pm, a practice that continues among many Spanish workers today.
Although most people connect the siesta with Spain, its actual birthplace is Italy. Similar midday nap breaks are common around Mediterranean(地中海)and in many Latin American countries, where the midday is often hot. Before air conditioning was invented, the siesta offered a much-needed break from the hottest hours of the day.
In recent years, former Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy introduced a plan to end the siesta, which would allow many workers to end their workdays earlier, making Spain’s standard work schedule at the same level with its European neighbors.
Although not a widespread practice, some countries outside of the Mediterranean area currently encourage midday napping. For example, parts of Japan have provided nap pods for midday breaks, and falling asleep at work is viewed as a positive sign that a person is working hard. In the US, some sleep researchers are trying to spread the concept of a power nap, which would allow people to briefly(短暂地)sleep while they are at work.
12. Why are businesses closed between 2 pm and 5 pm in the town of Ador
A. It is the hottest time of the day. B. It goes with its European neighbors.
C. Local people have a daily siesta. D. It is a positive sign of working hard.
13. What can we infer from the practice of siesta around the Mediterranean countries
A. The culture of siesta started from Spain.
B. The custom comes from the need of daily life.
C. Air-conditioners are a must in hot areas.
D. Nap breaks are popular around the world.
14. Why did Spain intend to end the siesta practice
A. To have a standard European work schedule.
B. There is no need to have a midday break now.
C. Spain is not one of the Mediterranean countries.
D. To stop workers from working too long.
15. What can be the best title of the passage
A. The advantages of midday napping B. The popularity of siesta in Spain
C. The reasons to end siestas D. A brief history of siesta

The car turned onto the familiar road that led to Grandma’s farm. “Jude, this summer holiday will be a great chance for you to stay with your grandma,” Dad said as he drove. Every moment, we were moving farther away from the city, the place where I knew how to do things right.
The car engine wasn’t off before Grandma hugged me. I slowly dragged myself out of the car. “Jude, you look unhappy. Why ” Grandma asked. She acted like nothing bad had happened last time. Could I ask how much money her neighbor Mr. Jackson had lost because of my mistake Was he still upset with me “I’m fine,” I answered. “I’m just missing my computer puters are something I’m good at.” “That sounds disappointing.” Grandma nodded.
I liked visiting the farm during breaks before I messed things up last summer. Grandma lived alone, and Mr. Jackson was like family to her. Then one day I forgot to lock the gate and let the goats into his flower beds. He lost almost all his roses for the farmers’ market.
Now, back at the farm, I felt nervous. I was trying to hide in the room when I saw Mr. Jackson! He was opening the door and calling Grandma. “I need help!” he yelled to her. “Just a second for the freshly harvested roses!” That was when he saw me. I felt my heart tighten and was ready for his criticism. I deserved it. He had probably been waiting for this moment since last summer.
However, Mr. Jackson greeted me happily, “Great, Jude is here! Your grandma always tells us you are a wonderfully competent(有能力的)computer programmer.” I shook my head. “I am not competent. I am sorry I messed things up.” He was surprised and comforted me, “It was an accident. Being competent doesn’t mean you never make mistakes.”
I looked out of the window. There were piles of roses waiting to be sold. “Jude, can you help us We want to sell roses online. We have a computer and all the parts(零件)for our internet connection, but we just can’t set it up,” Grandma asked. No internet. They seemed to live in the twentieth century.

【答案】 I could be someone who was really competent. “I can definitely help with that! Where are the parts ” Following Grandma, I went into the room, where a computer sat surrounded by some scattered parts. Rolling up my sleeves, I carefully connected everything. It was a piece of cake to me. “Done!” I announced confidently. After a few adjustments, the internet was up and running. Now it was time to sell the roses. I decided to start from my social media platform. I quickly uploaded photos, added descriptions, and set prices. Before long, notifications started showing up — people were noticing. My abilities made a difference!(96词)
Within a few hours, orders for roses flooded in. “This is amazing, Jude!” Grandma cheered with joy as she began bustling about, packing flowers. Mr. Jackson chuckled warmly as he handed me another bunch to label. The energy was electric — everyone was on their feet, moving quickly to keep up with the growing orders. The farm felt alive, and so did I. To our surprise, the roses sold out in just half a day. “You’ve brought the farm into the twenty-first century, Jude,” Grandma hugged me tightly. I realized that being competent wasn’t about avoiding mistakes. It was about facing them head-on and making the most of my strengths.(100词)
