In the old libraries of Dunhuang’s Mogao Caves, a 21-year-old computer student named Zhang Wei found something amazing. While studying 50,000 ancient papers scanned (扫描) into computers since 2020, she noticed that 30% had strange marks no one could read. These marks came from old languages once used along the Silk Road. This led her to create “SilkRoad AI” — a computer program that mixes language studies with smart machines to understand forgotten writing.
Zhang’s success came from studying stone markers in Xi’an. These stones had the same message in Chinese and two other ancient languages. Her program looked at how the marks were drawn and what they might mean. After months of work, the AI guessed 82% of the unknown marks correctly by matching them to known sounds. But some experts voiced different opinions. Professor Li from Beijing University said, “Computers can’t understand the hidden stories in old writings.”
In 2023, Zhang’s team tested their AI at an international history meeting. They used it to read a 1,200-year-old medical book from an ancient kingdom. The computer translated plant names and found 17 types still used in traditional medicine. When scientists checked these findings against modern plant records, they were proved correct. The test helped Zhang get UNESCO’s support to protect disappearing local languages.
Now working with the British Museum on ancient Indian writings, Zhang’s AI has helped experts understand 4,000-year-old business records. Her newest idea uses phone cameras — when visitors point their phones at damaged paintings in the Mogao Caves, they can see repaired pictures with computer-translated explanations. “We’re not just solving word puzzles,” Zhang says. “We’re helping people from different times and places talk to each other again.”
4. What led Zhang Wei to create “SilkRoad AI”
A. A program about the Silk Road.
B. Her interest in computer science.
C. Strange marks on ancient papers.
D. Amazing libraries of Mogao Caves.
5. What was Professor Li’s attitude towards Zhang Wei’s methods
A. Doubtful. B. Uninterested. C. Unclear. D. Positive.
6. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. A study on traditional medicine.
B. An international history meeting.
C. The effectiveness of SilkRoad AI.
D. The protection of local languages.
7. What can we learn from Zhang’s words in the last paragraph
A. Her newest idea is creative.
B. Her work easily solves word puzzles.
C. Her AI helps understand business records.
D. Her program connects the past and present.
【答案】4. C 5. A 6. C 7. D

The plants of the South African Fynbos region are no stranger to fire. Many species have adapted to dealing with and even depending on fire to complete their lifecycles. There is one species, however, that takes this to the extreme. It is named the fire lily. This plant provides wonderful flower shows during its brief flowering time after summer fires. Through its “phoenix-like” (凤凰涅槃的) habit, it is a source of interest and wonder, especially when seen in the wild against a blackened, ashy (布满灰烬的) background.
For most of the year, the plant is only a small group of narrow, long leaves. As the dry months of summer approach, the leaves senesce and the plant more or less disappears until its time to flower. However, unlike other plants in this region, the fire lily lies in wait for a very special flowering cue (暗示) —smoke. It has been noted that fire lilies only seem to want to reproduce after a fire. No other environmental factor seems to cause flowering. This has made them quite annoying for their lovers. Only after a fire burns over the landscape, will a scape (花梗) appear, topped with anywhere from 1 to 12 red flowers.
This dependence on fire for flowering has attracted the attention of a few scientists concerned with protection of this kind of plant. Obviously, if we care about protecting species like the fire lily, it is extremely important that we understand how they reproduce.
By experimenting with various burn and smoke treatments, researchers found out that it wasn’t heat that caused flowering but rather something in the smoke itself. Though researchers were not able to separate out the exact chemical(s) (化学物质) responsible, at least we now know that we can make fire lilies flower using smoke alone.
8. What can we know about the fire lily from the first paragraph
A. It is totally strange to fire. B. Its lifecycle depends on fire.
C. It has a long flowering time. D. Its flowers look like phoenixes.
9. What does the underlined word “senesce” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Fade. B. Grow. C. Dance. D. Shine.
10. What is probably the key factor for fire lily flowering
A. Heat. B. Smoke. C. Weather. D. Chemical.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Fire Lily: Out of the Ashes
B. Fire Lily: Away from Smoke
C. A Plant Driving Its Lovers Crazy
D. An Endangered Species in the Wild
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. B 11. A
D
You probably know the feeling of having a hearty meal at a restaurant, and feeling full and satisfied ... only to take a look at the dessert (甜点) menu and decide the cheesecake looks just mouthwatering. So why is it that you just absolutely couldn’t have another bite, but you somehow make an exception for a sweet treat
Scientists now have a better understanding of the neural (神经的) origins of this urge (强烈欲望) thanks to a recent study. Working with mice, researchers tried to set up a scene similar to the human experience described above. They started by offering a standard food diet to mice who hadn’t eaten since the previous day. That “meal” period lasted for 90 minutes, and the mice ate until they couldn’t eat any more.
Then it was time for a 30-minute “dessert” period. The first round of the experiment, researchers offered mice more food for dessert, and the mice ate just a little bit more. The second time around, during the “dessert” period, they offered a high sugar feed to the mice for 30 minutes. The mice really went for the sugary feed, eating six times more calories than when they had in the first round.
In the mice, researchers tracked the activity of neurons (神经元) that are connected with feelings of fullness, called POMC neurons. They found that when the mice were eating the high sugar diet, the neurons released a chemical produced within your body. “When we taste something sweet, it’s not just the sugar we’re taking in — it’s setting off a system in the brain that connects the sweet taste with pleasure, which makes us want to keep eating,” says Dr. Paule Joseph, a researcher at the National Institutes of Health.
Fenselau, one of the study authors, says studying this neural system further could throw light on how taking in too much sugar may contribute to the development of fatness.
12. What does the experiment with the mice aim to do
A. Compare the diets of mice and humans.
B. Measure how much the mice need in a meal.
C. Explore why there’s always room for dessert.
D. Test mice’s preference for different types of food.
13. What did the mice do in the second round of “dessert period”
A. They took longer to enjoy dessert.
B. They refused to eat any more food.
C. They ate much more high-sugar feed.
D. They showed no interest in sweet treats.
14. What does paragraph 4 focus on
A. The feelings of fullness.
B. Definition of POMC neurons.
C. The harm of keeping eating dessert.
D. Connection between sweets and pleasure.
15. What is the significance of further study according to Fenselau
A. To change people’s eating habits.
B. To help make wiser food choices.
C. To know the neural science better.
D. To uncover how sugar affects fatness.
【答案】12. C 13. C 14. D 15. D

【答案】范文
Last week, I participated in the “Doing Practical Things for My Hometown” public welfare activity. Along with classmates, we cleaned up the community park by picking up litter and sorting recyclables. We also taught elderly residents how to use smartphones for medical appointments.
This experience made me realize everyone can contribute to society through small actions. I felt proud to improve my hometown’s environment and help bridge the digital gap for seniors. Such activities strengthen our social responsibility while creating visible changes. I’ll definitely join more volunteer work in the future.
第二节(满分25分)
52. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I worked with a group of junior students. They could only read some materials at the third-grade level. I found it difficult to teach them, and I often felt helpless in trying to tutor (辅导) these kids. They were absent from school every now and then. I tutored them in small groups, but the results were not encouraging.
There was another problem — almost no reading materials were suitable for my students at such a low level. They wanted to read about relationships, dating, clothes and cars, not materials like “Run, Spot, run! See the ball.” The kids thought my materials were too babyish. Unfortunately, more interesting materials were too difficult for them to understand. One boy said, “Hey, man, this material is boring. And it’s foolish, too! Why do we get to read this junk (无用的东西)?”
One day, an idea suddenly came into my mind: I could raise some money to start a tutoring project. We didn’t get a lot of money, but it was enough for the project.
Nearby was a primary school. The third-grade students needed help with reading. I “hired” my students as reading tutors. I promised to pay anyone who’d help with those younger children. “You’ve got to know, that if you don’t show up, you won’t get paid. As a tutor, if you don’t work with care, it will be very disappointing to a young child. And I am sure every one of you will make a good tutor.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
All my students agreed to have a try.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As expected, the results were satisfying.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 All my students agreed to have a try. They prepared lessons carefully, selecting simple stories and designing interesting activities. When tutoring, they were patient and enthusiastic, using vivid gestures and humorous language to explain reading content. Gradually, they found the joy of teaching. One girl even said, “I didn’t expect helping others to be so much fun!” They began to understand the importance of reading and learning, and their attitudes towards study changed significantly.
As expected, the results were satisfying. The younger students’ reading abilities improved remarkably, and they developed a strong interest in reading. My students, who used to dislike studying, became more motivated. They not only enhanced their own reading skills while tutoring but also gained self-confidence. They were no longer absent-minded in class. The tutoring project not only bridged the reading gap between the two groups of students but also inspired a positive learning atmosphere, showing that sometimes a new approach can bring unexpected good results.2024-2025学年下学期期中质量监测高一英语

第二节(满分25分)

1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
