Over the years, as I dealt with the pressure of finishing my Ph. D. and starting my post-doctor, I had grown more competitive. I pushed myself to be t ho first to generate thrilling results and to publish in high-impact journals. Those who could have been collaborators (合作者) became rivals I hated.
But the effect of this competitive character was exactly the opposite of what I had hoped for. When I encountered scientific problems, I thought I had to solve them myself instead of asking for help. The pressure became overwhelming. I began to feel alone and lost. I became less and less productive.
I emailed my mentors (导师), explaining that I had put myself second and the job first for too long. They told me that I wasn’t the first academic to feel that way, and that I wouldn’t be the last. They agreed that I should take the time I needed to take care of myself. So, with my mentors’ support and an uncertain future, I left.
Back home, I spent time with family and friends and opened up about my struggles. At first, I was ashamed. But the more I talked about my demons, the more other people told me about their own. I also started to receive emails from my workmates. After a few lines asking how I was, many expressed worries about how they were managing the stress of academic life. Vulnerable (脆弱的) researchers were poking their heads out of their shells. Our relationships deepened. I began to feel less alone.
Three months later, I was prepared to go back to the science that I loved, and I now had a foundation to be more open with my colleagues. I understood that we all struggle sometimes, and that collaboration can be more powerful than competition.
With a bit of time, collaboration has replaced competition. Working with others and seeking help doesn’t weaken my value or contributions; it means we can all win. I no longer feel lonely and unhappy.
24. How did the author feel after adopting a competitive approach
A. Empowered and successful. B. Overwhelmed and isolated.
C. Motivated and productive. D. Ashamed and annoyed.
25. Why did the writer take a break
A. He was always the last. B. He needed some time to readjust.
C. He got serious homesick. D. He failed to care about himself.
26. What does the underlined phrase mean
A. Trying to be open with others. B. Starting to walk out regularly.
C. Being more confident in research. D. Tending to be happier than ever.
27. Which can be the most suitable title for the passage
A. From competition to cooperation B. From selfishness to selflessness
C. From problems to solutions D. From uncertainty to certainty

A dried-out plain in the north of Sacramento, California was in perfect condition to fuel wildfires. It was 2014, and California was experiencing its worst drought in decades. The plain was full of dry brush. Fire prevention workers and ecologists in the state were desperately working to reduce potential wildfire fuel sources anywhere they could. Ecologists, facing a dangerously dry plain and a price tag of at least one million dollars for a major construction project to fix the site, did something surprising. They called in the beavers (河狸).
Thanks to the introduction of the animals, the site was, restored to a lively plain, with trees popping up and streams flowing across the land. Damon Ciotii, a biologist who led the project, said he was amazed by the results of the project. He had estimated that the beavers would take about a decade to return the dried-out land to streams in the region, but the animals blew away his expectations. By year three, water was back. Ultimately, the project only cost $58,000, which was used to prepare the land for the beavers to come in and do what they do.
Beavers have essentially evolved to be the engineers of nature, transforming their landscape to suit their needs and to protect them from predators. They are quick in the water and can build dams (水堤) to make ponds and wetlands where they can better survive.
The population of beavers in North America was once driven down due to heavy hunting. However, after the desire for beaver hats and coats reduced, the population began to recover. The success of the project has led to a number of other projects using beavers for land restoration through California. Government programs were beginning to take notice and offer training to local people on how to use beavers for wildfire prevention.
28. Why was Ciotii surprised by the project
A. It cost significantly less money. B. It used animals to solve the issue.
C. It took effect quicker than expected. D. It changed the land into a lively plain.
29. How did the beavers reduce the wildfire fuel sources
A. They ate the dry bush. B. They protected dams.
C. They created water bodies. D. They helped the trees grow better.
30. What do we know about beavers in North America
A. They are trained to stop wildfire. B. They were threatened by humans.
C. They got protected for their roles in ecology. D. They are the main solution to the wildfire problem.
31. What is the purpose of this text
A. To present a study on beavers behavior.
B. To illustrate the cause and effect of wildfire.
C. To introduce the benefits of working with animals.
D. To inform the use of beavers in wildfire prevention.

To be clear: Food noise has nothing to do with hunger or food shortage, says Lawrence Cheskin, a professor of nutrition and food studies at George Mason University. It’s about being absorbed in thoughts about food.
In an issue of the journal Nutrients, researchers defined food noise as something that can be caused by internal signs such as your stomach growling with hunger or external signs such as seeing or smelling delicious foods. These signs can cause food-related thoughts to start playing on a repetitive cycle.
“Imagine you have a picture chart — think about what percentage of the day is spent thinking about food,” says Susan Albers, a clinical psychologist. “For those with a lot of food noise, 80 to 90 percent of their day is spent thinking about food.” “For those with intrusive food noise, it might affect their sleep, or lead to shame around eating or anxious thoughts,” says Goldman. “It can get in the way of someone being able to function at their best.” By contrast, those with mild food noise may hardly notice it.
Anyone can experience food noise but people with obesity or overweight often struggle with food noise more than other people do, which can make it difficult to lose weight. Other people include those with an eating disorder or disordered eating pattern. Also, if you have a lot of food rules or you’ve been dieting off and on for years, you may be more likely to experience food noise. “There’s a lot of shame and judgment around food noise,” Albers says. “It can impact relationships, leading to social withdrawal, and reduce people’s engagement in other areas of their life.”
Keep in mind, however, that food noise is a common suffering. “Don’t beat yourself up for it. Instead, exercise some self-sympathy,” Goldman suggests. “The way we talk to ourselves matters, so be mindful about what you’re saying to yourself about food noise.”
32. What do we know about the food noise
A. It’s the noise people make while eating. B. It’s only for people with weight issues.
C. It refers to repeated food thoughts due to signs. D. It’s related to food shortage and causes hunger.
33. What does the underlined word “intrusive” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Annoying. B. Inviting. C. Available. D. Unnoticeable.
34. How does food noise affect people’s life
A. It leads to severe weight gain. B. It brings about regular eating habits.
C. It results in a lack of social activities. D. It causes sleep disorders and overeating.
35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Being kind to yourself is helpful. B. Food noise is not a serious problem.
C. Talking to others about food noise matters. D. People should blame themselves for food noise.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I was always the kind of person who tried hard to please everyone around me. Whether it was my classmates, teachers, or family members, I went out of my way to make them happy. I would agree to do things I didn’t really want to do, like lending my favorite books that I was still reading to classmates who asked, or sacrificing my own study time to help others with their homework.
One day, my classmate Lily asked me to help her with a difficult math project. The project was due in a week, and it was going to take up a lot of my time. I had my own study plans and a big English test was around the corner, but I couldn’t bring myself to say no. So, I started spending hours every day helping Lily. We worked on the math problems, did research, and prepared the presentation together.
As the days passed, I was getting more and more stressed. I was constantly tired from staying up late to study for my English test after helping Lily. On the day of the English test, I was so sleepy and unfocused that I made a lot of silly mistakes. When the results came out, I got a much lower grade than I had expected. I was devastated (崩溃的).
Lily, on the other hand, got a great grade on the math project and was very happy. She thanked me, but I didn’t feel the slightest bit of joy. Instead, I felt a sense of resentment (怨恨) building up inside me. I realized that I had put my own needs aside for so long to please others, and it had finally had a negative effect on me.
That evening, I sat in my room, thinking about what had happened. I was tired of always being the one to give in and sacrifice for others. I decided that things had to change.

W: It isn’t good for you to do nothing all day, Jake. Why don’t you sign up for one of the college’s summer courses I’ve heard there’s a course in computer science, which would really help your Math degree. I think Mia, our neighbor’s daughter, is doing that. And there are still places available.
M: Honestly, I’d rather take a break. And I will be doing some work for my chemistry project, too.
W: Somehow I doubt it. Your holiday is going to consist of texting your friends and playing computer games.

W: I’d give it 8.
M: Why is that
W: Hmmm, the acting wasn’t why I went to watch the show, but it was surprisingly good. The clothing was very eye-catching and suited the show well. The singing, however, was a real letdown.

W: They’re for the food fair. It has been closed. Fortunately, you can enjoy the concert.
M: So what is this event all about, anyway
W: It’s just a community festival we have every year.
M: Cool. What’s happening across the street I saw that the local TV stations are all set up there.
W: That’s where all the dancing and sports events will take place. This area is for families. I’ve saved us this spot on the grass here.

M: Hello, everyone. We are lucky to have Molly Taylor here today. Molly is organizing an activity course for the summer holidays. Molly, this is the second year of the course, isn’t it
W: Yes. The summer course operated for the first time last year for a six-week period. We did think about making it longer this year and have a seven-week course, as there’re some schools which finish term a week earlier. In fact, two schools have eight-week holidays. But in the end we decided to keep to the same plan as last year.
M: But, as I understand, last year’s course wasn’t a complete success, was it
W: Well, we were actually very surprised by the number of people interested in the course. We didn’t actually have enough assistants to look after all the children. Besides, there was such a lot of rain that we couldn’t go outside as often as we wanted to.
M: So, what activities can the children look forward to this year
W: Well, once again there’ll be artists and musicians who will lead creative classes. We also considered providing some more exciting adventure sports. But we decided not to, in the end. Instead we’re introducing some fun programmes. I think it’ll be good fun for the children.

W: Hello. Welcome to our computer class for beginners. Typing skills are required for this course. In a moment you’ll begin typing the text I’ve placed on the stand next to each keyboard. First, however, I’d like you to look at the screen in front of you. There are no words on it, but it does contain two important objects, the end mark and the action point. You’ll be learning more about these later. Right now, please place your fingers on the keyboard and prepare to use it as if you were a typewriter. For example, to type capital letters, hold down the shift key. Don’t stop typing at the end of a line. When you type a word that is too long to fit at the end of the current line, the computer will automatically move the word to the beginning of the next line. If you make a mistake while typing the text, you can correct it by using the backspace key. Now please prepare to begin typing.

I’m glad to hear that you and your students want to bring home some souvenirs for your families as gifts. To make your presents both meaningful and memorable, I highly recommend the Chinese handmade silk scarves.
Silk scarves are affordable, elegant, and rich in Chinese culture. They showcase the beauty of traditional craftsmanship and can be worn for both casual and formal occasions. Featuring Chinese classic patterns like plum blossoms, dragons, and calligraphy, these scarves precisely capture the essence of China’s artistic heritage.
I hope you find the perfect gifts and have a safe and pleasant journey home!
Yours,
Li Hua
67. Paragraph 1:
The next day at school, another classmate, Tom, came to me with a request. He wanted me to join his group for a history project, which would require a significant amount of my free time. Just a few days ago, I would have immediately said yes without hesitation. But this time, looking at Tom’s expectant face, I summoned up my courage and said, “Tom, I really appreciate you asking me, but I have my own study schedule and personal things to take care of. I’m afraid I can’t join your group.” Tom looked a bit surprised. He tried to persuade me, saying that my ideas would be really helpful for the project. However, I stood my ground and politely declined again.
Paragraph 2:
After firmly saying no to Tom, I felt a strange mix of nervousness and relief. I was nervous because I was worried that Tom might be angry with me or that other classmates would think I was selfish. But at the same time, there was a huge sense of relief. I realized that it was okay to prioritize my own needs. To my surprise, a few days later, Tom came to me again. He said that although he was a bit disappointed at first, he understood my decision. He even thanked me for being honest with him. From then on, I continued to be true to myself. I still helped others when I could, but I no longer over-committed.
