This all started a few months ago, when I had a dull pain in the back of my mouth, around where one of my wisdom teeth was supposed to be coming in. I thought it was a pain that I could live with for a while.
However, during the next few weeks, the pain became more intense, spreading to my teeth, gums and jaw. I was told I had seven wisdom teeth.
Yes, you read that correctly, seven-three more than a normal person. My first reaction when I heard was to laugh. It’s just my luck. My mouth wanted to do more work than it had to.
Focusing on the positive, one of the great things about having extra teeth is watching people’s reactions when they find out. So far, I haven’t grown tired of repeating myself.
The extra teeth are also a good excuse for me being tongue-tied. I can now blame it on my overcrowded mouth rather than my slow brain.
Of course, with wisdom teeth come the intellect jokes. My parents say my intelligence comes from my extra teeth and not my hard work. My friends agree that once the teeth are pulled, my brain will be that of a 5-year-old.
I’ve also thought about how I might profit from this. If only I still believed in the tooth fairy, I could make a lot of cash. Maybe I could sell my extras to someone in need. Advertisement: Seven teeth for sale, unused, in almost perfect condition.
Don’t be fooled by my jokes. I am worried about having surgery. I’m also going to be sad to see the Lucky Seven go. I’ve developed quite an attachment to them over the past two days. Once they’re removed, I’ll just be normal again, and who wants that?

Why do we laugh and get amusement from so many different things, from puns(双 关语) to pratfalls? Why are some things funny to some people and not to others? How is that while a successful joke can cause pleasure, a sick one can cause serious harm? Over the centuries, various scholars have attempted to produce a universally agreed-upon theory of humour. Plato and Aristotle introduced the superiority(优越感) theory, the idea that people laugh at the misfortune of others. Their theory seems to explain teasing, but it doesn’t work well for knock-knock jokes. Sigmund Freud argued for his relief theory, the concept that humour is a way for people to release psychological tension and reveal their inner fears and desires. His theory works well for dirty jokes, less well for most puns.
The majority of humour experts today agree with the incongruity theory, the idea that humour arises when there’s a gap between what people expect to happen and what actually happens. Incongruity has a lot going for it-jokes with unexpected funny lines, for example, fit well. But scientists have found that in comedy, unexpectedness is overvalued.
With the goal of developing a new, more satisfactory explanation, I produced “the gentle violation(违背) theory”, the idea that humour arises when something seems wrong or threatening, but is actually OK or safe. A dirty joke, for example, trades on moral or social violations, but it’s only going to get a laugh if the person’s listening is open enough to consider the subject OK to talk about. Similarly, puns can be seen as linguistic violations that still make grammatical sense.
And while most humour theories have struggled to account for tickling(挠痒痒), or just avoided the phenomenon altogether, my theory accounts for even this kind of laughter. Tickling involves violating someone’s physical space in a gentle way. People can’t tickle themselves-because it isn’t a violation.

We all have our own idea of what the perfect smile should look like, whether we show a mouthful of whites or keep our lips closed and turned up at the corners. When we think of the perfect smile, we often picture someone grinning, with all of our teeth showing. But based on new findings, less is actually more. Nathaniel Helwig and his colleagues at the University of Minnesota discovered that a successful, genuine smile actually rests less on showing teeth and more on facial balance and symmetry(对称). For the study, researchers looked at 3D computer-animated facial models of more than 800 participants. The computer-animated facial models went through a series of facial transformations, with researchers changing the mouth angle, amount of teeth shown, and the degree of the smile. Participants were then asked to rate the models’ smiles based on effectiveness, genuineness and pleasantness.
The results of the study found that the most successful smile had a perfect balance of teeth, an ideal mouth angle, and a smile length that extended to what was called the “sweet spot”. Smiles that showed a quick sync(同步) of the left and right side of the face during smiling were also more highly related.
Smiling makes up a good part of our non-verbal communication, making it easier to draw people to you and also seem sincere. It’s also worth noting that a perfect smile could help improve your health too.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完 整的短文。
George’s mother was very poor and sick. Instead of having bright fires in winter, she had nothing to burn but dry sticks, which George picked up from under the trees. One fine day in July, his sick mother sent him to the woods. He was to stay there all day, to get as much wood as he could collect.
It was a bright, sunny day, and George worked very hard, so by the time the sun was high, he was hot, and wished for a cool place where he might rest and have his meal. While he hunted for a spot on the bank he saw among the grass some fine, wild strawberries.
“How good these will be with my bread and butter!” thought George. Lining his cap with leaves, he set to work eagerly to gather all he could find, and then seated himself by the river.
It was a pleasant place, and George felt happy and contented. He thought how much his sick mother would like to see him there, and to be there herself, instead of in her dark room in the village.
George thought of all this, and just as he was lifting the first strawberry to his mouth, he said to himself, “How much Mum would like these!” So he stopped, and put the strawberry back again.
“Shall I save them for her?” he said, thinking how much they would refresh her, yet still looking at them with a longing eye.
“I will eat half, and take the other half to her,” he said at last, and he divided them into two heaps(堆). But each heap looked so small that he put them together again. “I will only taste one,” he thought. As he again lifted it to his mouth, he saw that he had taken the finest and he put it back. “I will keep them all for her,” he said with great happiness, and he covered them up nicely to take them home.

He stood up and started to get more and more wood until the sun was beginning to sink. George set out for home. He carried his cap filled with strawberries very carefully. How happy he felt then! He had all his strawberries for his sick mother. The nearer he came to his home, the less he wished to taste them. He arrived home before he knew it.
Just as he had thrown down his wood, he heard his mother calling him from the next room. “Is that you, George? I am glad you have come, for I am thirsty and I’m longing for some tea. Could you get some for me?” George ran to her and joyfully offered her all the wild strawberries. Seeing the wild strawberries, George’s mother was very glad, tears running down her face. She said, “My boy, you saved them for your sick mother, did you? God will bless you for all this, my child.” At that moment, George and his mother were both filled with happiness.
