People hate mosquitoes due to their blood-sucking tendencies. Scientists, too, are troubled by mosquitoes and have been researching ways to keep them away.
A team of researchers from Virginia Tech in the US looked into different kinds of soap. They invited volunteers to test how four different soap flavors attract mosquitoes and discovered several chemicals in the soap that can influence the mosquitoes’ “choice of food”, especially two chemicals, one with the smell of coconut and another with the scent of flowers.
The team also found that what matters to mosquitoes is not just the chemicals, but rather the combination of chemicals with each person’s smell. For example, people who attract mosquitoes can be more attractive after using one type of soap. They can also repel mosquitoes by using another kind of soap. The findings were “remarkable”, said senior author Clement Vinauger in a news release, adding that he would choose a coconut-scented soap to keep mosquitoes away.
How these insects manage to find humans has also made scientists curious. According to a new study published in Current Biology, researchers built a “canteen” for hundreds of mosquitoes. In the 20-by-20-meter facility, there were six pads with the smell of different humans, which were heated to mimic sleeping humans.
They found that the insects can track scents up to 60 meters. Also, mosquitoes are most attracted to a kind of chemical called carboxylic acid (羧酸), which is usually produced by bacteria on human skin. The smell of one participant wasn’t attractive to the insects, and researchers believed it was due to the person’s diet, which is mainly plant-based foods. Perhaps changing a person’s diet could one day make them “mosquito-proof”. This is especially beneficial for regions where mosquitoes carry diseases, such as malaria, CNN reported.
4.What can influence the mosquitoes’ “choice of food”

During the 2025 Spring Festival movie season, an extraordinary event occurred: Ne Zha 2 became a massive hit in Chinese cinemas. By February 3rd, its box office earnings had surpassed 4 billion yuan(about $550 million), breaking previous records. This animated sequel quickly gained popularity, even outperforming famous films like YOLO (热辣滚烫) and The Wandering Earth 2 (流浪地球2). Guo Fan, director of The Wandering Earth 2, shared an exciting poster online to celebrate this achievement, which also highlighted the rapid growth of China’s animation industry.
The film’s success changed how cinemas operated across the country. To meet the huge demand, theaters introduced 1,000-seat screening halls for the first time, with some scheduling nearly 100 shows daily. Tickets sold out rapidly both online and at ticket counters. Meanwhile, related merchandise sparked a shopping craze. Items featuring characters like Shen Gongbao (申公豹) and Shi Ji Niangniang (石矶娘娘) flew off shelves. Limited-edition blind boxes disappeared within hours, and crowdfunding for collectible figures raised ten times the expected amount, proving fans’ love for the film.
Rooted in Chinese mythology, Ne Zha 2 retells ancient stories with a modern twist. Magical realms, legendary weapons, and iconic figures like Ao Bing (敖丙) are woven into a story that deeply resonates with young audiences. The film’s central theme — “fighting against fate”— strikes a chord with teenagers facing pressures in school, family, or society. As one college student said after watching the film, “It’s not just about gods and demons. It’s about how we should fight for our own future.”
The film also explores new relationships between characters. Ne Zha and Ao Bing, once enemies, now balance competition with friendship. Visually, Ne Zha 2 sets a new standard for Chinese animation with over 1,900 carefully designed special effects shots. Scenes like flaming lotus flowers clashing with water dragons leave audiences amazed, showing that Chinese animation can compete with global giants like Disney or Studio Ghibli.
Beyond box office success, Ne Zha 2 bridges ancient culture and modern creativity. By mixing cultural pride with advanced technology, it inspires a new generation to value tradition while embracing innovation. The rebellious spirit of Ne Zha — a “little devil” challenging old rules — not only entertains but encourages young people to think critically and pursue their dreams.
8.How did cinemas respond to the popularity of Ne Zha 2
A.They reduced the price of tickets.
B.They introduced large capacity screening halls.
C.They increased the number of small screening halls.
D.They scheduled more than 100 shows of other films daily.
9.Which merchandise was NOT mentioned as popular among fans
A.Limited-edition blind boxes. B.Posters of Shi Ji Niangniang.
C.T-shirts with water dragon designs. D.Collectible figures of Shen Gongbao.
10.Why does Ne Zha 2 resonate with young audiences
A.Because it has beautiful pictures.
B.Because it shows a lot of funny characters.
C.Because it has simple and easy-to-understand plots.
D.Because its theme of “fighting against fate” reflects their situation.
11.What can we learn from the passage about Ne Zha 2
A.It only focuses on the relationship between Ne Zha and Ao Bing.
B.It combines ancient culture with modern creativity.
C.It doesn’t encourage young people to think independently.
D.It has over 1,900 special effects shots but still can’t compete with foreign animations.
A study conducted by Cornell University examined how the use of AI in conversations impacts the way people express themselves and view each other.
The researchers have found people have more efficient conversations, use more positive language and perceive each other more positively when using an AI-enabled chat tool.
However, the group also found that when participants think their partner is using more AI-suggested responses, they consider that partner as less cooperative.
“I was surprised to find people tend to evaluate you more negatively simply because they suspect you’re using AI to help compose text, regardless of whether you actually are,” said Jess Hohenstein, the lead researcher. “This illustrates the continuous overall doubt that people seem to have around AI.”
For their first experiment, participants were asked to talk about a policy issue and assigned to one of three conditions: both participants can use smart replies; only one participant can use smart replies; or neither participant can use smart replies. Researchers found that using smart replies increased communication efficiency, positive emotional language and positive evaluations by communication partners. On average, smart replies accounted for 14.3% of sent messages.
But participants whose partners suspected of responding with smart replies were evaluated more negatively than those who were thought to have typed their own responses, consistent with common assumptions about the negative implications of AI.
“While AI might be able to help you write,” Hohenstein said, “it’s altering your language in ways you might not expect, especially by making you sound more positive. This suggests that by using text-generating AI, you’re giving up some of your own personal voice.”
Malte Jung, an associate professor, said, “What we observe in this study is the impact that AI has on social dynamics and some of the unintended consequences that could result from integrating AI in social contexts. This suggests that whoever controls the algorithm (算法) may have influence on people’s interactions, language and insights into each other.”
12.How do the researchers draw their conclusion
A.By analyzing figures. B.By making use of AI.
C.By conducting experiments. D.By completing questionnaires.
13.Which statement does Hohenstein agree with
A.AI always expresses in ways you expect.
B.Algorithm will never influence people’s insights.
C.Trust can be affected by using AI in conversation.
D.You will regain your voice by using AI in conversation.
14.How will a person feel about suspecting his partner’s using smart replies
A.Nervous. B.Uncomfortable. C.Excited. D.Puzzled.
15.What is the text mainly about
A.Methods of using AI in conversations. B.Efficiency of using AI in conversations.
C.Convenience of using AI in conversations. D.Impacts of using AI in conversations.
Whether it’s painting, or sculpting tiny cupcakes out of clay, making art is good for your mind and body. 16 But you don’t have to be a full-time artist to get those health benefits. All you need to do is just making art. Here are things you need to know in particular to start your creative art habit.
17 “People tend to think that only those who are very skilled at art can call themselves artists, but everyone is capable of creative expression,” says Kaimal, a leading researcher in art therapy. Her research has shown that there are no differences in health outcomes between experienced artists and green hands. 18
Start with what you enjoy — maybe something you’ve done before, maybe something you were fond of as a kid. Keep an open mind. Anything that engages your creative mind, such as finger painting, baking, knitting, etc, is good for you. And don’t feel like that you have to stick to one thing. 19
Think about making art like any healthy habit. Just as you make time to work out, you should make time for your artistic creation. 20 Kaimal suggests setting up a corner table for your art supplies. “Your creative corner is kind of like a reminder,” she says. “It shows your comment to invest in yourself and your well-being.”
A.Let it go that you’re not an artist.
B.Do whatever you are interested in.
C.Besides time, spare a physical space in your home for art.
D.It is also good to figure out your way of creative expression.
E.There are rules for how much time you should engage in art.
F.The act of creation can reduce stress and improve your mood.
G.So despite your skill level, you’ll feel all the good things from making art.

“Bang. . !” Sara pushed the door open. She threw her school bag onto the floor and called out, “I’m home!” No answer. The house was silent. It sounded empty, but she knew it wasn’t. Her mum and dad were working upstairs.
Sara got a glass of orange juice, went into the conservatory (玻璃房) and sat down in her favourite chair. The garden was still in the dark afternoon. On one side, her mum’s garden was neat and tidy with boring short grass, boring straight flowerbeds and boring straight paths. But on the other side, Sara’s Nature Garden looked wild and exciting with big dead sunflowers and tall grasses.
“Nobody is interested in me. Mum and dad only think about their work,” she thought sadly.
Then she recalled: One month earlier, she learned in a magazine that many dogs were abandoned because their owners got bored with them; One hour earlier, she saw a cute dog wagging its tail and licking her friend’s face.
Sara knew today was special. Today things were changing. She couldn’t wait any longer. It’s time to talk to her parents.
So Sara got up from her chair and climbed all the way to the loft (阁楼). “Mum, I want a talk.” said Sara. “Just a minute!” Her mum clicked on the keyboard, took off her glasses and turned to her daughter. Sara coughed, took a deep breath, and told her mum that she wanted a dog. “No, Sara. That’s impossible,” her mum said firmly. Sara went to her father but got the same answer. She rushed into her room angrily and slammed the door shut.
Later, Sara’s mum knocked at the door and went in. “Darling, we know this is important to you. You can have a dog if you take the responsibility. But look at your Nature Garden, your school bag, your bedroom! What a mess! Do you think you can take good care of a dog ” said her mum.

I am glad to learn of your keen interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine, particularly in exploring massage. Massage, as a fundamental part of traditional Chinese medicine, boasts a rich history dating back thousands of years. As a way of treating disease and preserving health, it employs a wide range of techniques, including pressing, rolling, pushing and so on for the purpose of relieving pain and enhancing immune function.
In my view, the future prospects for massage are promising. With advancements in modern technology, massage has proved effective and exploded in popularity. I believe that massage will emerge as an increasingly preferred health remedy and gain wider recognition and application globally.
Looking forward to your visiting China and experiencing the wonders of massage. Best regards!

Sarah was lost in thought and decided to make a change. She went to the bedroom first, which was terrible. Sarah quickly began to sweep the floor, fold the clothes, and make the bed. Finally the bedroom made people’s eyes light up. Then there was her natural garden, which also was a terrible place. But Sarah was not discouraged. She spent two hours weeding and planting new flowers. Even if she was very tired, she did not stop. Mother was very happy to see the change in her, and decided to buy Sarah a puppy.
With the company of the dog, Sarah began a busy and happy life. After she woke up in the morning, she took her dog for a walk in the park. After coming back, she cleaned her room and had breakfast delightedly. After school, she went to the kennel and cleaned it . Having finished her homework in the evening, she would help her mother with the housework. Look at her garden, it was also neat and tidy, because of her tendency. Sarah was healthier and happier than before.
