(2025·东莞模拟)On my first job as a sports editor for a small newspaper, I never got a letter from my readers, so I felt strange when an envelope was put on my desk one morning. When I opened it, it read: "A nice piece of writing on the Tigers. Well done! Go on!" It was signed by Don Wolfe, the sports editor. Because I was not confident at that time, his words couldn't have been more encouraging. Later, when I got to know him, I learned that Don made a habit of writing encouraging words to others. "When I make others feel good about themselves," he told me, "I feel good, too."
Over the years, I've tried to copy the example of Don Wolfe and other friends who care enough to write encouraging words, because I think they are doing something important. We all need a boost from time to time, and a few lines of praise may turn around a day, even a life.
Why, then, are there so few note writers like Don Wolfe My guess is that many are afraid they'll be misunderstood or sound strange. Also, writing takes time. It's far easier to make a phone call. The disadvantage with phone calls, of course, is that they don't last long. A note is a matter of record, and the note can be read more than once and valued.
What does it need to write notes that can inspire human spirit and warm people's hearts Only a willingness to express our appreciation (欣赏). Be ready to give your praise. Your words may not only make a difference to others, but they can make a difference to yourself. As Don Wolfe said, making others feel good about themselves makes me feel good too.

Scientists have long known that a good night's sleep is important for brain health. Recently a new study has found that daytime naps(小睡)can also be good for the brain.
Researchers from University College London in the UK and the University of the Republic in Uruguay looked at small parts of people's DNA. There are 97 parts of DNA in humans that can tell whether a person is likely to be a daytime napper or not. They used data from about 35, 000 people in the UK between the ages of 40 and 69. They found people in the study whose DNA made them more likely to nap during the day and people whose DNA showed they didn't need to nap.
The results showed that those who like to nap had larger brains than those who didn't. The brain naturally gets smaller with age, so this means that the brains of people who like to nap age more slowly than people who don't nap. The people who nap have brains that are bigger than those who don't.
Dr. Victoria Garfield said the research could help scientists understand how people could preserve the health of their brains as they got older. She added, " I hope studies such as this one showing the health benefits of short naps can help to change any bad impression of daytime napping. "
The researchers didn't have information about how long the naps of people in the study lasted. Other studies, however, have suggested that naps of about 30 minutes are the most helpful for the brain. Taking a nap earlier in the day, rather than in the late afternoon, is less likely to disturb(干扰)a person's sleep at night.

Huang Xuhua,an excellent Chinese scientist, passed away on February 6th,2025. But his amazing achievements and strong spirit will always be remembered and will guide China's future.
Born in Guangdong Province in 1926,Huang saw his country suffer from foreign attacks during his childhood. Because of these bad memories and experiences,he made up his mind to study hard and use his knowledge to make his country stronger. In the 1950s,China began the challenging task of building nuclear submarines (核潜艇). Huang Xuhua bravely joined this project. At that time, there wasn't much advanced technology or resources, this task was like climbing a very high mountain.
Huang and his team faced many challenges while keeping the project a secret. They mustn't share their work with anyone outside their group, not even their families. So Huang was away from home for years. As they worked on designing the submarines, they faced significant problems. For example, building a nuclear reactor was very difficult, and they couldn't ask foreign experts for help. Instead, they had to depend on their own research and used simple tools like abacuses and slide rules to make calculations and conduct experiments. Another major challenge was ensuring the submarine could remain stable underwater. After many tests, they gradually found solutions to these problems.
Finally,in the 1970s,China successfully built and tested its first nuclear submarine. This made China one of the few countries that could do this. Huang didn't stop there. He continued to improve submarine technology and received many awards for his hard work, including the "Medal of the Republic" in 2019.

According to a study published earlier this year in a journal, the season length is growing, meaning that it is taking longer for leaves to change their colors. And this is not the only way that climate change is ruining the season.
"Trees are holding onto their leaves longer, " explained Dr. Howard Diamond, a senior climate scientist"In my own neighborhood, I can remember that the leaves would drop a lot sooner 20 years ago than they do now. This is a personal observation, but research actually supports this phenomenon we're witnessing.
Climate change isn't just causing the leaves to change later. We can also expect later frosts(霜) according to Dr. Michael E. Mann, a professor of the University of Pennsylvania. Mann said" That means mosquitoes and pests remain active for a longer time in autumn, posing a greater health risk to human beings.
If there is any good news at all, though, we may be able to stave off this development. Mann pointed out that if humans limit their carbon dioxide emissions, they can still prevent the worst effects of climate change from affecting them during the autumn months. "A new study recently provides further evidence that surface warming will likely stop after carbon emissions reach zero, " Mann stated in his recent comment for Live Science.

Although polar bears live in the Arctic, where temperatures hit-40℃, they stay warm thanks to their fat and thick fur, which can keep heat in and cold out. But scientists have found that polar bear fur provides something more than that. It also has oil that keeps ice from building up at all.
At first the researchers thought the structure of polar bear fur was what kept ice from sticking to it, but when they examined the fur under a microscope, they realized that wasn't the case. They noticed something else, however: The fur was very oily. The team guessed that could be what kept the fur from freezing.
To check their idea, they froze blocks of ice onto washed and unwashed polar bear fur, human hair, and ski equipment, which is covered with chemicals that reduce friction(摩擦力). Then they worked out how much force was needed to remove(移开)the ice from each of these materials.
Ice was easily removed from the unwashed, oily polar bear fur and the ski equipment. It was harder to remove from the human hair and about four times harder to remove from the washed fur. After finding out why the ice wasn't sticking, the team carefully studied the oil itself. They found that it was full of chemicals that keep ice away.
Hopefully, the findings will lead to the creation of materials that don't get icy. Now, some of the chemicals used to keep skis ice-free are harmful to the environment.

How often do you go to the park Is it part of your everyday life, or a trip that you plan Many large city parks are far from where people live. It means they are a place for planned visits rather than everyday life. For example, only 14%of the population of Los Angeles have a park in walking distance. Also, such parks often benefit some areas much more than others. It's hardly helpful to deal with this by creating large new parks. So some cities turn small areas of land, empty parking lots or even parts of quiet streets into pocket parks. This has a major effect on the quality of life.
Often no larger than a few tennis courts ( 场 ) and, above all, within neighbourhoods close to where people live, these green spaces can increase community connections. They provide a place to meet neighbours, or a play area for children. Green gyms or ball game areas can give local people a space to exercise in, improving public health. Local businesses can use spaces to organize events to sell their products. A study by the University of Philadelphia, showed that crime (犯罪)was reduced in neighbourhoods with pocket parks, compared to those without. Studies report that where space is used to make pocket parks, communities feel greater ownership of their neighbourhood.
As well as benefits for the human population, an increase in green space can benefit the local environment. Pocket parks allow wildlife to travel across the city. Tree branches and leaves spread out and cover the parks, so they can help to reduce temperatures. Trees also help to reduce air pollution. Green space can reduce flood risks, because it allows water to float away.
Pocket parks are providing valuable relaxing places. With the rapid development of cities, pocket parks have become a cheap way to improve communities and local environments.

A.To show pocket parks are good for businesses.
B.To show pocket parks improve people's health.
C.To show pocket parks are popular with children.

It is widely known that China has the most advanced high-speed railway network in the world. Now, the country is breaking its own speed record with CR450.
CR450 can travel at 400 kilometers per hour on average with a top speed hitting 453kilometers per hour. Before this, the fastest high-speed train operating in a rail network in the world is China's CR400, which runs at 350 kilometers per hour on average.
Once put into use, for example, the CR450 will shorten the travel time from Beijing to Shanghai to just about two and a half hours, which takes at least four and a half hours at the moment.
"The key is not to make the train run fast but to have it brake(刹车)accurately(精准地)and steadily(平稳地),"Zhao Hongwei of the China Academy of Railway Sciences told CCTV News. The standard is that the CR450 should have the same brake distance as the CR400, which is 6,500 meters, even though it travels a lot faster. Lu Ban came up with the idea of the ruler when he was young. Benjamin Franklin invented swim flippers (蛙鞋) at the age of 12. And last year, the 6-year-old Kate Smith, published her invention for baby medical treatment.
The stories of the young inventors remind people of children's great creativity. Scientists agree that children are more creative than adults and they have the power to create and invent.
Every invention starts with curiosity (好奇心) and a heart to explore. Children are naturally curious and have a spirit of discovery, which drives them to ask questions, explore problems, and try to solve them. Lily Peterson, at the age of 9, created the ice cream stick—just because she wanted to hold the frozen cream. But the simple invention has transformed the way we eat ice cream making it easier and more enjoyable for people of all ages.
What's more, children can learn quickly and like turning new knowledge into practice. They are not afraid to think differently and can challenge long-held ideas. They enjoy getting the sense of confidence and pride when they try out their ideas. It makes them take an active part in scientific experiments (实验) and create unexpected ideas.
Children's ability to create is really valuable. Adults should encourage them and provide them with chances to explore the world. By doing so children can help to make the world around them better.

(2025·茂南模拟)Have you ever seen a bee fly busily Do you think the bee is flying around In fact, the bee is hard at work.
Bees spend much time looking for food. But not all the bees in the hive (蜂巢) do that. Bees can be divided into three kinds — a queen bee, drones (雄蜂) and worker bees. The queen bee is very important. She is the mother of all the bees in the hive. Worker bees do all the other work in the hive. Besides looking for food, they make and clean the hive. They also look after and protect the queen.
Bees make dance-like movements inside the hive to send messages about food. They use different movements to give different information. They tell where food can be found and how far away it is from the hive. Bees can even share how much food there is and how good it is.
And surprisingly, a new study has found that a group of bees could generate an amazing total of electricity by beating their wings more than 200 times per second. And the amount of electricity could reach 100 V to 1,000 V. That's eight times greater than the electricity a storm cloud can produce.
Scientists found that the thicker a cloud of bees is, the more electricity it generates. Based on these findings, the team recorded that bees — which group together to form a huge, thick cloud of bees — could have an influence similar to that of a storm. Further research is needed to find out how electricity influences the bees and their environment.
