I was attending a conference about contemporary art among many art scholars in the field. I greeted others and introduced myself as a psychology Ph. D. student who would present research on how the brain reacts to art. A distinguished scholar said, “Why are you here You seem a little bit out of place.” Silence faded, and then whispers like that rose just because I was an interdisciplinary (跨学科的) attendee.
Years earlier, when I was a student in cognitive neuroscience (认知神经学), my professors advised me, “Choose one interest and pursue a single goal.” I knew they were giving me valuable advice. But the reality was that I was attracted by many subjects besides neuroscience. Art was always an important part of my life. I was also fascinated by new technology and how it allowed researchers to explore uncharted waters.
So, I disregarded my professors’ ad vice and looked for ways to develop all my passions. For a while, it seemed an impossible mission. Finally, I participated in a Ph. D. project that involved the study of art history and technologies that allowed people to have new aesthetic (美学的) experiences. However, the research journey didn’t go smoothly as expected. Each scientific conference I attended, regardless of its focus, left me feeling like a cheater, as academics tried to put me into a known professional category. I seemed to be setting myself up for being a jack-of-all-trades but a master of none.
I felt quite stressed about where I should belong and was at a loss about my future. One day, I attended an art exhibit at a local museum. It focused on one of the most famous advocates of interdisciplinarity in history: Leonardo da Vinci, an artist, scientist, and inventor. I hung on the words of the museum guide: “Had he not been interested in diverse subjects, his achievements wouldn’t have been so shining.”
These simple words renewed my determination. I spoke out my unique perspective to other scholars, emphasizing that I didn’t profess to be an expert in any field. And I was determined to combine knowledge and promote interdisciplinary connections.
4. How did scholars at the conference respond to the author’s introduction
A. They went crazy about his report.
B. They were amazed at his young age.
C. They were unconcerned about his major.
D. They were doubtful about his expertise.
5. What did the professors advise the author to do
A. Narrow his research focus.
B. Be innovative in the art field.
C. Pursue his passion for learning.
D. Turn to distinguished scholars.
6. Why is Leonardo da Vinci mentioned in paragraph 4
A. To persuade readers to be his advocates.
B. To praise him for his great achievements.
C. To explain the reason for the author’s resolve.
D. To make a contrast between him and the author.
7. What can be the best title for the text
A. My advantage of being a jack-of-all-trades.
B. My fascination with cognitive neuroscience.
C. My journey as an interdisciplinary researcher.
D. My struggles of balancing hobbies against work.

A blue hole is a flooded sea cave with a hole that opens up at the land’s surface. These cave systems form in carbonate rock, often on islands. Far below sea level they contain some of the toughest environments on Earth, with no oxygen and no light. Yet these areas are filled with life forms that have adapted to the extreme conditions.
Blue holes get their name from the color that some cave holes have when seen from the air. The color is usually a reflection of the sky on the water. But not all of these cave systems have blue surfaces. Some contain dark or muddy water.
They have several layers (层) of water, chemicals and bacteria. The top layer of freshwater comes from rainfall. This layer acts like a cap on top of the layered mixture and keeps out oxygen from the atmosphere. The fresh water floats on a denser (密度大的) layer of saltwater. Underneath this is a layer of poisonous hydrogen sulfide, produced by bacteria living in the water. Underneath this layer is an anoxic seawater—water that does not contain any oxygen.
Kenny Broad is an anthropologist at the University of Miami in Florida. He has spent several years exploring underwater caves in the Bahamas. He says, “Underwater caves are probably one of the least understood ecosystems on the planet. One of the reasons is that you still physically have to go there, you can’t send in a submarine (潜水艇) or a mode operated vehicle, some autonomous machine. You need to go there.”
There are many safety rules that divers must follow to help ensure their survival. First, divers must have training and experience to swim in these caves. Divers who explore a cave for the first time must establish a thin rope called a guideline. This line helps them to safely enter and exit the cave without getting lost. Divers must also bring several light sources in case one fails. They also must bring more than one set of breathing equipment in case one device fails. And, they must pay careful attention to their air supply as well.
8. What do we learn about blue holes
A. They are blue seen from the air.
B. They have severe conditions.
C. They contain oxygen and light.
D. They do not have life forms.
9. What is “Hydrogen sulfide” in paragraph 3 in a blue hole
A. Liquid. B. Gas C. Solid D. Bacteria
10. What does Kenny Broad think of the caves
A. Poisonous. B. Autonomous. C. Mysterious. D. Unreachable.
11. What is essential to new cave divers according to the last paragraph
A. A guideline. B. Food sources.
C. Water supply. D. Swimming suits.

Traditional theories have assumed that in language development, acquiring phonetic (语音的) information means learning to produce and understand these different sounds and recognizing how they form words and convey meaning. Babies were believed to learn these individual sound elements to construct words.
However, recent research suggests a different approach to understanding how babies learn languages. “We believe that speech rhythm (节奏) information is the hidden glue supporting the development of a well-functioning language system,” said study co-author Usha Goswami.
To understand whether that was the case, the researchers had 50 babies at 4, 7 and11 months old watch a video of a primary school teacher singing 18 nursery rhymes. In a carefully controlled environment, the baby participants were presented with 18nursery rhymes played via video recordings. These rhymes, sung by a native English speaker, were selected carefully to cover a range of phonetic features. The sounds were delivered at a consistent volume. Then the researchers used a method called EEG, which involved placing a soft cap with sensors on each baby's head to measure their brainwaves. The brainwave data was then analyzed to obtain the phonological information, allowing the researchers to create a “readout” of how the babies’ brains were processing the different sounds in the nursery rhymes.
Contrary to what was previously thought, the researchers found that babies don't process individual speech sounds reliably until they're about 7 months old. Even at 11 months old, when many babies start to say their first words, the processing of these sounds is still rare. However, rhythmic speech information was processed by the babies as early as 2 months old, and this processing predicted later language outcomes. The study stresses the importance of parents talking and singing to their babies, using rhythmic speech patterns.
The study opens up new ways for exploring how early speech processing relates to language disorders. This could be particularly significant in understanding and potentially handling these conditions early in life. However, the research focused on a specific group of babies without developmental disorders, mainly from an English-speaking environment. Future research could look into how babies from different backgrounds, or those with developmental challenges, process speech.
12. What is the key to language learning according to the recent study
A. The formation of the words. B. The individual speech sounds.
C. The meanings of single words. D. The speech rhythm information.
13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The ages of the subjects.
B. The features of the subjects.
C. The result of the research.
D. The process of the research.
14. What is the suggestion for parents with 2-month-old babies in paragraph 4
A. Singing nursery rhymes.
B. Saying academic words.
C. Using complex sentences.
D. Teaching individual sounds.
15. What should future study focus on
A. Improving the learning environment.
B. Increasing the diversity of the subjects.
C Finding a cure for babies with disorders.
D. Analyzing features of perfect speech.

Improved technology has enabled many corporations to operate internationally. These companies have entered foreign markets. ____16____ This has driven many businesses to include cultural intelligence as a qualification for promotion and employment. Psychologists have developed ways to measure and improve an employee’s cultural intelligence quotient (商) (CQ).
CQ is generally evaluated using written assessments similar to intelligence quotient (IQ) tests. ____17____ And it also checks personal knowledge of situations where extra care is required. Besides, it assesses the effectiveness of an employee’s plans for dealing with sensitive situations and the ability to put strategies to practical use.
As we all know, IQ is largely unchangeable. ____18____ Generally, CQ can be improved by training. People going through the training could score higher in CQ tests than those who don’t receive such training. These individuals generally accept belief systems other than their own.
____19____ For those with only occasional contact with members of a certain group, one night of reading may be enough to learn the basics of polite/impolite behavior of that culture. Those who make frequent trips may need to do more in-depth research. Online reading and conversations with foreign people are good approaches to enhancing cultural intelligence.
After learning about cultural differences, those with high CQ often develop plans to apply that knowledge to social interactions. Often, they examine their typical behaviors and compare them to the normal behaviors of another culture. For example, a person usually greeting business associates with a hug would attempt to predict the effects of that behavior on members of a society that’s more protective of personal space. ____20____
A. Like IQ, CQ is also important.
B. In contrast, CQ is quite different.
C. Thus, their workers need cultural sensitivity.
D. He would then adjust his behavior accordingly.
E. CQ testing can improve one’s cultural intelligence.
F. Improving cultural knowledge can easily increase CQ.
G. CQ testing measures one’s desire to be culturally sensitive.

In a town where the streets were lined with various markets and every corner was filled with music, there was a man named Carlo s who had the gift for fixing things. From clocks that wouldn’t tick to bikes that had lost their click, Carlos could mend almost anything and the locals would say, “If Carlo s can’t fix it, then it can’t be fixed.”
Carlos had a son named Luis who admired his father’s talent but had his heart set on music. He would spend hours sitting outside the shop, playing the guitar, filling the air with melodies. Carlos loved his son’s music, but he often worried about his future. “Music is your passion, son, but fixing things is a steady trade”, he would say.
One day, the neighborhood’s joy was affected by the news that the beloved park, where children played and families gathered, was going to be closed down. “It’s old and unsafe,” the city officials said. “It would take too much to fix it.” The community was heartbroken because the park was where memories were made.
Carlos and Luis walked through the park sadly. As they passed the silent swings and the rusty (生锈的) slide, an idea began to form in Luis’ mind. “What if we fix the park, Dad We could do it together!” But Carlos shook his head, “It’s a big job, dear. Bigger than any we’ve done before.”
Instead of being in despair, Luis organized a concert in the park to raise awareness and funds. The whole neighborhood came to hear him play, their spirits lifted by his songs of hope and unity. After the concert, Carlos stood up, moved by the community’s outpouring of love for the park and their shared moments under the stars.

CQ is generally evaluated using written assessments similar to intelligence quotient (IQ) tests. ____17____ And it also checks personal knowledge of situations where extra care is required. After learning about cultural differences, those with high CQ often develop plans to apply that knowledge to social interactions.

“We will fix our park!” Carlos declared to the crowd. The words echoed through the park, filling the air with a renewed sense of hope. The crowd erupted into cheers and applause, their energy and determination igniting a spark within each other. Carlos continued, “Together, we will make this park shine again. We’ll use my skills to mend the broken structures and Luis’ music to inspire and unite us.” The neighbors nodded in agreement, ready to roll up their sleeves and contribute in any way they could.
The Park was saved due to the city officials’ support, but it was the collective efforts of the community that truly made the difference. After hearing about the concert and the passionate speeches made by Carlos and Luis, the officials were touched by the residents’ dedication to preserving their cherished space. They agreed to provide necessary funding and resources, recognizing the value of the park as a hub for community bonding and childhood memories. As the park slowly regained its former glory, the community felt a renewed sense of pride and belonging. The city officials even organized an official reopening ceremony, where Luis performed a special concert, dedicating his music to the park and the people who made its salvation possible.
