第二部分 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2.5分,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分;满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
When asked why he or she wears clothes, some people will probably answer “to keep warm and to cover my body”. These are the basic reasons why clothes are worn, but people also want to look attractive and appear successful to others.
If people only wore clothes for warmth and to cover their bodies, most clothes would be simple and cheap. In most Western countries, however, clothes are sometimes very expensive. The main reason for this is not the cost of the cloth or the cost of making the clothes. The clothes are expensive because of fashion.
Successful businessmen, for example, often wear very expensive suits, shirts and ties. Sometimes they pay thousands of dollars for a suit and hundreds of dollars for a tie. It’s just a suit and a tie but they pay these prices because of the famous name of the designer. A suit costing much less would be just as warm and would cover the wearer’s body just as well.
Fashion is always changing, which means those who want to be fashionable have to buy new clothes every few months, even if last month’s clothes have only been worn once or twice. Some people have wardrobes full of clothes that have hardly been worn but are no longer in fashion. Being fashionable, therefore, can be a very expensive pastime!
1. What do people basically wear clothes for
A. Keeping warm and covering bodies.
B. Following the fashion.
C. Looking attractive to others.
D. Appearing successful to others.
2. What does the underlined word “wardrobes” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Fashionable clothes shops.
B. Cupboards for storing clothes.
C. The clothes that some people have.
D. Shelves used for keeping books.
3. What is the passage mainly about
A. Clothes and fashion. B. Suits and ties.
C. Cost and pastime. D. Beauty and success.

New York’s Underside
A dangerous job
Since I was a boy, I have always looked down open manholes with curiosity, so I welcomed the opportunity to explore and write about the world beneath New York City. With a group of 11 “sandhogs” — the nickname for the workers who build New York’s underground — boarded a slow, shaky elevator lit by a single light bulb. Slowly we went down a shaft dug through 200 meters of rock. The sandhogs were building a new tunnel to bring water into the city, The present tunnel system carries more than 5.6 billion liters of water every day. That’s enough water to fill more than 2,200 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
As we descended, it got dark and the air got cool. I looked up into darkness and down into deeper blackness, then the elevator stopped, and everyone got out. Then came the hard part, climbing another 10 meters down a long, slippery metal ladder. At the bottom was a dark tunnel filled with dust and smoke. Sandhogs were using explosives like dynamite to cut through the solid rock. The tunnel extends slowly — only four meters a day — and with each day come new dangers. Sandhogs live in constant fear of being hurt by sharp pieces of exploded rock. Their bodies are covered in such scars.
“Why do this work ” I asked Brian Gallagher, a sandhog for 16 years. Brian’s father was a sandhog, too, but it is not tradition that brought him here. “It’s the money,” he said. An experienced sandhog earns over $100,000 a year. The rewards are well deserved. A sandhog’s chances of dying on the job are far greater than those of an above-ground construction worker, or even a New York City police officer.“Everything down here can kill you,“ one sandhog said. They know many more workers will die before the tunnel is completed.
A river of sewage
On another trip below the city, sewer worker Jeff Kwami showed me how the city’s sewage is kept flowing smoothly. We went down a manhole wearing plastic bodysuits, gloves, and tanks of air. Everything around us was wet and slippery, as we climbed carefully down 12 meters and then stopped on a narrow concrete step. In front of me was a fast-moving river of sewage nearly two meters wide. It smelled awful. I asked Kwami, “What happens if you fall in and you’re not attached to a rope ” He said if you didn’t pull yourself out, you’d drown in the sewage. But unlike the dangers sandhogs face, such situations are rare. As we move through the sewer, Kwami seems calm and confident, but it’s still a terrifying thought.
Later, as we left the darkness and danger below, Kwami joked, “See any alligators ” Over the years, there have been stories about giant alligators living in the sewers. I tell Kwami that in 1935, the New York Times reported an alligator was pulled from a sewer. He still didn’t believe it, and we laugh together as we climb back to the surface.
4. The writer of the passage is .
A. considering getting a job as a tunnel worker B. taking tourists into New York City’s tunnels
C. interested in what lies beneath New York City D. reporting on the benefits of working underground.
5. What danger that underground workers face is NOT mentioned
A. Slipping. B. Being cut by rock. C. Drowning. D. Elevators falling.
6. Sewer workers probably carry tanks of air because .
A. the smell of the sewage is bad B. the tunnel is filled with smoke
C. they have to dive into the sewage D. they need to clean the air in the sewer
7. What would be the best heading for the last paragraph
A. Recent Alligator Sighting B. The 80-Year-Old Alligator
C. How to Survive Sewage D. Just a Story

John Nelson, 92, grew up in Michigan and volunteered for the army in 1945.The 18-year-old managed to get accepted, despite being colorblind. He landed on the island of Iwo Jima in the first days of the American attack to take the island from the Japanese. Nelson fought day and night for 10 days before receiving a serious wound to his right arm. The other seven men in his squadron (中队) all died. American losses included 5,900 dead and 17,400 wounded.
Nelson saw the American flag being raised on Mount Suribachi after the island was taken by the American forces. The arm would continue to trouble him the rest of his life. Suffering from anxiety and flashbacks, he was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (创伤后应激障碍).

Android phones will be used to sense earthquakes around the world and may one day be able to provide global warnings, with the first mass alert system coming into use on August 11 in California, a search engine company announced.
The company, which helped develop Android, worked with California and the United States Geological Survey to build the quake alerts into all phones that run the common mobile operating system. Android users who have enabled location services and are near a quake of magnitude 4.5 or greater will receive a full-screen earthquake warning telling them to seek cover. The screen also will provide estimates of the quake’s magnitude and distance from the user. Depending on their distance from a quake, people could get several seconds or perhaps a minute of warning.
Users won’t need to download California’s MyShake app in order to receive the alerts. That application, developed by the University of California, Berkeley and launched last year, has been downloaded by only about 1 million of California’s 40 million residents. By contrast, many millions of people own Android phones.
“This announcement means that California’s world-class earthquake early warning system will be a standard function on every Android phone — giving millions of people precious seconds to seek cover and hold on when the big one hits,” Gov.Gavin Newsom said in a statement. The iPhone users won’t receive the alerts through Apple’s operating system, but they can download the MyShake app.
Also, the company announced that Android phones would begin detecting earthquakes from around the world through their motion-sensing accelerometers. “Your Android phone can be a mini-seismometer, joining millions of other Android phones out there to form the world’s largest earthquake detection network,” according to a blog post of the company. More than 2 billion devices run the Android operating system. Hundreds of millions of people live in earthquake-prone areas. But many countries lack the resources to build detection and alert systems, the company said. The information will be used at first to provide fast and accurate information on the search engine. But the company said it could begin sending out earthquake alerts next year.
12. If an earthquake hits the US, who won’t receive the earthquake warning
A. Android users who haven’t downloaded the MyShake app.
B. The iPhone users who have downloaded the MyShake app.
C. The iPhone users who haven’t downloaded the MyShake app.
D. Android users who have downloaded the MyShake app.
13. In the context of the article, the term “mass alert system” probably refers to: ______.
A. A system that alerts only a select group of people in the event of an earthquake.
B. A widely used method of communicating earthquake warnings to the general population.
C. A technology that detects earthquakes by monitoring the motion of large objects.
D. A program that allows users to share their location data during an earthquake.
14. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text
A. To emphasize the importance of earthquake monitoring.
B. To persuade readers to purchase Android phones for earthquake monitoring.
C. To make a search engine company known to the world.
D. To introduce a new function of Android phones.
15. Which of the following would be the most appropriate title for the article
A. “California Leads the Way in Earthquake Detection with Android Phones”
B. “Android Phones Transform into Seismometers for Global Earthquake Monitoring”
C. “Earthquake Early Warning System Launched Exclusively for California Residents”
D. “The Future of Earthquake Prediction: Seismic Sensing Through Smartphones”

There were three children in my family. Kind Larry was the oldest, followed by smart Emily and I. One year, our family moved into a bigger house and we each had our own room. Both Larry and Emily chose to live upstairs while I preferred living in the basement. Emily laughed at me because I picked a room with poor natural light. However, I never cared about it. I had a secret kept only between my brother Larry and me-I wanted to be the neighbor of our large refrigerator where something delicious was always stuffed including the whole family’s favorite-ice cream.
During the week, we drank only milk at our meals and never ate dessert. But Sunday was different- Mom would make her famous roast meat dinner and Dad would make an exception to the dessert rule. One Sunday, my father sat happily at the head of the table and said, “Great meal! I think we should finish it with something special, “He told my brother, “Larry, go downstairs and get Breyers!”
Breyers is a brand of ice cream, the family’s favorite. When it went on sale, my mother would buy some, about a gallon of it, storing it in the refrigerator in the basement for such a special occasion.
But when the moment really came, I spoiled it. For a few nights, I couldn’t resist the temptation and ate a half box of ice cream at the rate of a small spoonful per night. So when Larry was about to run downstairs, I hurriedly pulled his hand under the table. Larry turned to look at me and felt surprised, but he immediately understood what had happened.
Emily was impatient at the table, looking at her empty dinner plate and urging Larry to be quick. Larry didn’t move, and instead, he said to Dad, “Why don’t we enjoy it on Children’s Day ” Dad smiled, “We can eat again on that day. Come on, Larry! Go and get it!” I knew Larry didn’t look like himself today. He was an ice cream lover like everyone else present, but it was unbelievable that he should refuse to eat it today. I felt very sorry for making my brother Larry so embarrassed.

【答案】 With one more look at me, Larry had to walk slowly down to the basement. I felt extremely guilty for eating the ice cream. I wanted to confess, but I was too scared to speak up. As Larry returned with an empty container, everyone looked confused. Dad asked, “Where’s the ice cream ” Larry replied, “It looks like someone has eaten it all.” I lowered my head, hoping no one would notice my embarrassment.
To my great shock, just when I hesitated to admit it, Larry said, “Yes. I ate it.” My eyes widened in disbelief. Larry continued, “I was feeling hungry late at night and couldn’t resist the temptation. I’m sorry.” I was puzzled why Larry would take the blame for me. Later, when we were alone, Larry explained that he didn’t want me to feel guilty and wanted to teach me a lesson about honesty. I thanked him and promised to never do something like that again. From that day on, I became more truthful and responsible.
