The most popular talks of 2024
Greta Thunberg: The disarming case to act right now on climate change
This 16-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg explains why, in August 2024, she walked out of school and organized a strike to raise the awareness of global warming, protesting outside the Swedish parliament and attracting the world's attention. “The climate crisis has already been solved. Tracking the result to a series of misleading Facebook ads targeted at vulnerable Brexit swing voters——and linking the same players and tactics(战术) to the 2024 US presidential election—Cadwalladr calls out the “gods of Silicon Valley” for being on the wrong side of history and asks: Are free and fair elections a thing of the past

This new school year, I wanted my love for my students to be super adaptive, a little bit blind, and similar to the kind of love a mother gives to her children. I wanted a love that could put up with unappealing personalities and behaviors, which had the ability to lead to my “I wish he or she was not in my class” response, with humor, peace, and curiosity.
I decided to go toward the most difficult students with additional kindness, rather than backing away in frustration when my former attempts to change them failed. The changes in my education were faint yet definite. I had always taken students aside when they made poor decisions. But my new plan asked questions that were free of scolding or shame, and more gentle and sincere. Are you feeling all right Is something bothering you What happened last night These questions rarely led to any big “ah ha” moments, but I treated each repeated conversation with patience.
Although my love plan was designed to improve my students’ school experience, it completely improved mine as well. It worked magic on my relationships with students and energized me for the school day. My difficult students represented puzzles to solve and relationships to improve, not frightening trouble that would exhaust my joy. Letting go of the assumption that their behaviors must be purposive choices, I was able to avoid feelings of resentment(怨恨) when my students made mistakes. I felt more peaceful and less angry.
Loving my students also got easier as the year progressed. I wondered whether my approach would work in the long run. Now it turns out that love brings love.
24. What was the author's desire in the new term
A. To be more tolerant of students. B. To respect students' suggestions.
C. To seek students' shining points. D. To show an interest in teaching.
25. What was the change in the author's education
A. She cared about students’ sleep quality. B. She offered students chances to explain.
C. She made efforts to lift students' spirits. D. She took badly-behaved students aside.
26. What was the impact of the author's love plan (1)
A. It enabled her to find self-worth. B. It gave students more spare time.
C. It guided students to be honest. D. It made her feel more calmed.
27. What can we learn from the author's experience
A. All the worries are for nothing. B. There is some light in the dark.
C. One action can bring two gains. D. Facts speak louder than words.
C
The government of the Marshall Islands has protected a huge area of ocean around two remote atolls(偏远环礁). This measure is intended to protect important marine(海洋的) and bird life. The government says this is their first marine protected area(MPA), but it won't be their last.
The new MPA sets aside 48,000 square kilometers of ocean where no fishing is allowed. That's larger than the area of Denmark or the Netherlands. The protected area surrounds two remote atolls: Bikar Atoll and Bokak Atoll. No one lives on the two atolls, which are far away from the rest of the Marshall Islands, so the oceans around them are in excellent shape.
In 2023, scientists from National Geographic’ s Pristine Seas project worked with experts in the Marshall Islands to study the area that's now protected. The group made452 dives and spent over 640 hours underwater. Enric Sala, who started the Pristine Seas project, calls the area a “time machine” and says that the coral reefs(珊瑚礁) around the atolls are so healthy that diving there is “like diving in the ocean of 1,000 years ago”.
The underwater life near the atolls includes different kinds of fish and many deep-sea sharks. The researchers say that there may even be marine life there that scientists have never seen before. Moreover, the area contains the largest nesting(筑巢) site for green turtles in the Marshall Islands. It hosts more seabirds than any other place in the country.
The government of the Marshall Islands believes protecting sea life in this large area will also help marine life outside the protected area. And that will help local fishermen and others who depend on the sea. “Our future depends on protecting our ocean,” says Glen Joseph, who leads the group responsible for protecting the waters of the Marshall Islands.
28. What can be inferred from paragraph 1
A. The MPA is too huge to be protected effectively.
B. The government aims at protecting distant atolls.
C. The marine life of the Marshall Islands has been damaged.
D. The government has a long-term strategy for marine protection.
29. What does the description of the area as a “time machine” suggest
A. The marine life there is ancient.
B. The area is in need of protection.
C. The coral reefs there are in good condition.
D. The atolls have changed a lot over the years.
30. What is the author's purpose in writing the last but one paragraph (1)
A. To show the necessity of establishing the MPA.
B. To prove the area is home to unique marine species.
C. To draw scientists’ attention to the Marshall Islands.
D. To explain the importance of marine life to this area.
31. What does the government of the Marshall Islands agree with
A. The ocean's health is related to the human livelihoods.
B. The economy of the Marshall Islands depends on sea life.
C. Marine protection requires the efforts of the whole society.
D. Local fishermen should be responsible for marine protection.
D
France has banned smart phone use in primary and secondary schools since 2018, arguing that it helps children focus, limits social-media use, and reduces cyber bullying. The Netherlands followed in January 2024, and Hungary soon after. Britain is now considering a similar ban. But will such measures improve students' mental health
The problem is evident. A 2021 report from America's surgeon general found that between 2009 and 2019, persistent hopelessness among high-school students increased by 40%, while the number considering depression rose by 36%. Nearly half of mental-health disorders that emerge in adolescence persist into adulthood. Smart phones, often seen as the cause, provide easy access to social media, where comparison, cyber bullying, and addiction are almost everywhere. Yet proving a direct link between smart phone use and declining mental health is tricky.
The challenge lies in nuance(微妙之处). A smart phone is a tool, used for everything from educational games to doom scrolling(刷负面新闻) on social media. Its effects on well-being depend not only on content but also on the age and developmental stage of the user. Research by Amy Orben at Cambridge suggests that social-media use is particularly harmful during puberty’ s(青春期) critical developmental windows—— ages 11-13 for girls, and 14-15for boys.
Banning smart phones in schools, however, may not be the solution some expect. A recent Lancet study by Victoria Goodyear found no significant difference in mental well-being between students in schools with strict phone bans and those with relaxed policies. The real issue, researchers argue, is overall screen time, not just school use.
To make matters worse, social-media firms refuse to share detailed user data, forcing researchers to rely on simple measures like screen time. Until a clearer picture emerges, policymakers risk presenting solutions without fully identifying the problem.
32. Why is it difficult to prove a link between smart phones and mental health
A. The effects of smart phones vary among users.
B. Most students refuse to participate in studies.
C. The use of smart phones is not content-based.
D. Schools do not track phone usage accurately.
33. Why might banning phones in schools fail to improve mental health
A. Parents would oppose the new regulations.
B. Students would switch to using tablets instead.
C. Social media use extends beyond school hours.
D. Cyber bullying occurs only outside of school.
34. What is the author's attitude towards the policymakers
A. Critical. B. Indifferent. C. Supportive. D. Annoyed.
35. What is the best title of the passage
A. Should Schools Ban Smart phones to Improve Focus and Learning
B. Will Banning Smart phones in Schools Improve Students’ Mental Health
C. Does Too Much Screen Time Harm Students’ Emotional Well-being
D. Are Social Media Platforms the Main Cause of Student Anxiety

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
I want to break free: who doesn't want to shake off their chains and soar towards a world with no limits 36 Happily, we have the power to shut the past up, and listen to something much kinder instead. Follow these ideas to make a start.
Stop damaging yourself
Do you sometimes act against your best interests Maybe you avoid opportunities that could improve your life. This self-damage often comes from a fear of change or unworthiness. Recognizing these behaviors can help you break the cycle. 37 This helps shift negative self-beliefs and boosts self-confidence.
Get rid of annoying ANTs
We all have Automatic Negative Thoughts (ANTs) that hurt us, telling us we' re not enough. 38 For instance, instead of blaming yourself for spilling tea, remind yourself that mistakes happen and they don't define you.
39
Nelson Mandela once said, “To be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” Forgiveness is essential for healing, allowing you to release emotional baggage. This could mean yelling or crying to release built-up tension.
Learn to be an imperfectionist
Perfection is an impossible standard. Embrace the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, which celebrates the beauty in imperfection. When things don't go as planned, instead of feeling defeated, recognize the lessons and growth they bring.
Stop worrying about what others think
40 Most people are too preoccupied with their own lives to notice or judge you. Embrace who you are and pursue what truly excites you without worrying about others' opinions.
A. Forgive to thrive.
B. Write down moments where you' ve felt proud of yourself or achieved success.
C. Keeping them in mind will one day help you.
D. But somehow it just isn't that easy.
E. Actually, it isn't difficult to come up with a good solution.
F. These thoughts can be challenged by noticing them and consciously rethinking about them.
G. Don't let the fear of judgment hold you back.

Writing sample:
Dear Chris,
How’s everything I’m thrilled to share with you our "Green Campus Day" held last Friday on the playground, aiming to enhance environmental awareness.
The event featured three meaningful activities. First, interactive games taught us waste classification techniques through distinguishing recyclables from hazardous materials. Next came a creative session where students designed striking posters advocating low-carbon lifestyles. The highlight was transforming old items into practical crafts—our team converted a plastic bottle into a pen container, how rewarding it was!
This hands-on experience not only deepened my understanding of environmental protection but also motivated me to adopt sustainable habits. Never before had I felt so strongly about teamwork and creativity !
Yours,
Li Hua
