That night, July 11, 2022, Nick Bostic was driving down the streets of Lafayette, Indiana, when he found a
two-story house was on fire.
Flames (火焰) were climbing up the front porch. Without pausing for a moment to think about the danger,
Bostic stopped his car and ran from the back door into the burning building, which belongs to the Barrett family.
Bostic had just started climbing the stairs when he looked up and saw four faces appear from a room at the
top of the stairs and look down at him, their eyes wide. “Your house is on fire, you need to go!” Bostic yelled.
Bostic hurried the four girls into the fresh air. “Anybody else in there ” Bostic asked.
“Kaylani is in there! We can’t find her!” Seionna, the eldest of the girls, screamed referring to her
six-year-old sister. Without hesitating, Bostic ran back inside.
By now, the whole side of the house was in flames. Bostic went upstairs. He searched every bedroom. No
kid. The smoke was thick now. He lifted his T-shirt, trying to cover his mouth and nose when he heard the sound
of crying, from the dark smoke below.
Bostic felt about in the blackness and heat, moving downstairs toward the sound. Then suddenly Kaylani
was in front of him. Bostic quickly lifted the girl into his arms. Where is the front door ! Bostic remembered
seeing a window on the side of the house where the fire hadn’t reached.
Bostic climbed back up, made it to the room and broke the glass, Kaylani still in his arms.
Bostic and Kaylani looked down at the open grassy space. The girl said, “ ________” He was thinking the
exact same thing.
But they had little choice. The flames were inching ever closer. Holding Kaylani tightly in one arm, Bostic
ran forward and threw himself out of the window. He managed to land on the other shoulder. Kaylani was almost
unhurt.
Days passed. Bostic woke up from first-degree burns to his leg and arm, He felt like he’d just done what
anyone would have done in that situation. But outside the hospital, the story of Nick Bostic was already spreading.

What would you like for lunch Maybe, a battery (电池) Although it sounds unusual, this has already
been realized by scientists as they develop electronic (电子的) things you can eat.
Robofood, led by Dario Floreano from a Swiss Institute, has created a new drone (无人机) with scientists
from Wageningen University, the Netherlands. Half of the parts inside can be eaten! The program aims to (旨在)
make robots that can be eaten and foods that act like robots by mixing food science and robots in a new way.
The drone’s wings are made from rice cakes glued together with oil and chocolate. It can find missing
people or animals in emergencies (紧急情况) and send food or medicine. Parts of the drone can be eaten because
they meet food safety standards for emergencies set by the United Nations.
However, the main challenge is finding stronger edible (可食用的) materials for the drone’s wings to
prepare for bad weather and high temperatures—of course, the chocolate may melt (融化) easily.
Robofood also developed an edible sensor (感应器) to help monitor stomach sickness, and it’s eaten by
the patient to check the conditions inside. It’s different from other sensors because it’s easy for your body to
digest (消化), so it won’t leave any remains inside the body.
The invention of Robofood also helps with environmental protection. There are batteries that you can
fully eat. They are made from natural things like vitamin B2 and elements found in fruits. This helps the
environment because you won’t have to throw them away like other batteries.

What would you like for lunch Maybe, a battery (电池) Although it sounds unusual, this has already

People have discussed about this. Let’s have a closer look.
Yes—a bath washes the mind and body
Baths are about much more than cleanliness. They are places to relax and you can think about the coming
day so that you can plan tomorrow well there. You will have to do nothing in a bath but read or eat if you want.
Most people have been used to bathing since they were born. For the first few years of a person’s life, they are
bathed before bed,not showered.
No—showers are quick and cheap
The cost of baths is more than that of showers. Experts recently worked out that a year of two baths a day
costs 438 but a year of two showers a day costs just 161. Baths are more expensive. Showers are better for the
environment because they use less water and energy. What’s more, showers are efficient when you don't have
much time in the morning. You just need 3 minutes to finish it and it means you can stay in bed for an extra time.
Now, you’ve learned a bit more about it. You are hoped to scan the QR code in the picture above to join in

试卷第 20 页,共 21 页
2024-2025 学年一线教师制作期末精品复习试卷,押题预测
April 22nd marks Earth Day, a reminder to safeguard our planet. I’ve decided to focus on reducing plastic
use, a crucial step to combat pollution. Plastic waste chokes oceans, harms wildlife, and takes centuries to
decompose. By cutting back, we can protect marine life and minimize environmental damage.
To execute this plan, I’ll follow three steps. First, I’ll carry reusable bags, bottles, and containers daily,
replacing single-use plastics. Second, I’ll choose products with minimal packaging when shopping, opting for
bulk items or brands using eco-friendly materials. Finally, I’ll spread awareness among friends and family,
encouraging them to join this effort.
However, challenges exist. Sometimes, finding plastic-free alternatives can be inconvenient or costly. To
overcome this, I’ll research local stores that offer sustainable options and compare prices. Additionally, I’ll
remind myself that small sacrifices today lead to a healthier Earth tomorrow. With consistent effort, we can make
a difference.
