In the 1920s, wheat farmers on the Great Plains(大平原) were making a lot of money. This made many
other people want to be farmers, too. But no one tried to stop the farmers from plowing almost all the land and
cutting down most of the trees.
Still, everything was fine until 1931. This was the beginning of a terrible drought—a long period without
rain. The beautiful wheat fields dried up, and the crops died. Then there were no plants to keep the soil in place.
All that was left was bare, ugly, dry dirt.
Then the wind started to blow. With no trees to prevent it, the wind gathered up the soil into huge black
clouds that travelled for miles. These clouds were called dust storms, and it was impossible for people to get away
from them. Dirt is collected in people’s houses. It fell into their food. It got into their noses, mouths, and eyes.
People wore masks, but the dust still clogged their lungs, causing many people to get sick. The dust even fell very
high in a few places. Everything was buried in the dust, and farm animals died without food. The serious storms
punished everyone and everything. The Great Plains became known as the Dust Bowl.
This was the worst natural disaster ever to hit the United States. But some people believed the farmers
deserved what happened to them because they did not care for the soil. They said the disaster could be prevented
if the farmers were wiser and more careful.

We’ve all heard it before: to be successful, get out of bed early. After all, Apple CEO Tim Cook gets up at
3:45 am, Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne at 3:30 am and Richard Branson at 5:45 am—and, as we know, “The early
bird catches the worm (虫).” Indeed, it may be true that those who get up early have a jump start on the day before
others are even out of bed.
But just because some successful people wake up early, does that mean it’s a trait (特质) most of them
share And if the idea of having exercised, eaten breakfast, and done one task before 8 am makes you want to
sleep in until next Saturday, does it mean you’ll have a less successful life
For about half of us, this isn’t really a problem. It’s reported that about half the population doesn’t see
themselves as ‘early birds’ or ‘night owls’—they’re more in the middle. About one in four of us, though, are more
likely to be bright-eyed early risers, and another one in four are night owls. For them, the influence can go beyond
falling asleep in front of the TV at 10 pm or being regularly late for work.
Many studies have found that morning people are more independent and agreeable. And compared to night
owls, they are less likely to be sad, drink or smoke.

“Although morning types may achieve more in school, night owls score higher on tests of memory,
thinking speed and cognitive (认 知 的 ) ability, even when they have to do those tasks in the morning.” says
Oxford University biologist Katharina Wulff, “Night-time people are also more open and more creative. And one
study shows that night owls are as healthy and wise as morning-types, and a little bit richer.”
Still think the morning people sound more like CEO type Don’t set your alarm for 5 am just yet, as it turns
out, changing your sleep times may not make much difference. “If people are left to their naturally preferred times,
they feel much better. They say that they are much more productive. They can think in many more ways.” says
Katharina Wulff. On the other hand, she says, pushing people too far out of their natural preference can be
harmful. When they wake early, for example, night owls are still producing melatonin (褪黑激素). “Then, you
stop it and push the body to be in the daytime mode (状态). That can have much negative influence,” Wulff says,
like how the body acts differently toward blood sugar control which can lead to weight gain and other health
problems.
Still believe “The early bird catches the worm.” Maybe the saying should be “The bird that follows its
own clock catches the worm!”

A.They like sleeping in front of the TV.
B.They are more likely to be successful.
C.They are less independent than morning people.
D.Half the population see themselves as night owls.

A.Keeping your sleep habits is better.
B.Setting an alarm for 5 am is necessary.
C.Changing natural sleep times can make you more creative.
D.Getting up early can help you score higher on tests of memory.
44.The word “negative” in the last paragraph most probably means ________.
A.important B.sad C.harmful D.amazing
45.What’s the writer’s main purpose of writing this passage
A.To explain why some people are more successful.
B.To advise people to get up neither too early nor too late.
C.To compare the differences between early risers and night owls.

号的横线上。
The holiday season will be here soon, and with it come tons of parties. Here’s how to mind your 46
(manner) at the dinner table.
First things first
Mind the little details—you 47 (hear) them all before. Answer an invitation letter in time; be
fashionably on time; bring a gift 48 your host or hostess; and remember 49 (behave) politely.
After you sit down
The first thing you should do is place your napkin (餐巾) on your lap. Leave it there 50 the end of
the meal. If you excuse yourself from the table, the most common 51 (practise) is to place it on your seat
until you return.
What to do with utensils (餐具)
The safest way is to start from the outside—the utensils 52 (far) from your plate—and move
inward as the meal goes on. The fork and knife closest to the plate are for 53 (eat) your main course (主
菜).
How to hold a fork
There are two ways of holding your fork—the 54 (Europe) style and the American style. In Europe,
most eaters keep the knife in their right hand for cutting, and they keep the fork in their left hand for eating. In the
American style, eaters switch (交换) the fork over to their 55 hand to eat the pieces that they have cut.
Traditionally, this is the main difference between the two styles.
After the party
Don’t forget a thank-you note. It should be sent within two weeks after the event.

If customers come in and just say “desi chai”, they will pay 5 for one cup. If they say “desi chai, please”,

Hussain made a sign to tell customers the rule. And he has yet to ask someone to pay 5 for the drink. “If

And compared to night
owls, they are less likely to be sad, drink or smoke.

thinking speed and cognitive (认 知 的 ) ability, even when they have to do those tasks in the morning.” says
That can have much negative influence,” Wulff says,
like how the body acts differently toward blood sugar control which can lead to weight gain and other health
problems.

Hussain made a sign to tell customers the rule. And he has yet to ask someone to pay 5 for the drink. “If
one doesn’t use his manners, I’ll point to the sign, and he’ll quickly ask again more politely. ”said Hussain.

when they see it. And at the end of the day, you never know what someone is going through to make them act
rudely. This sign may help them drop their guard (戒备).” Hussain added.
