In the 1920s, wheat farmers on the Great Plains(大平原) were making a lot of money. This made many
other people want to be farmers, too. But no one tried to stop the farmers from plowing almost all the land and
cutting down most of the trees.

Still, everything was fine until 1931. This was the beginning of a terrible drought—a long period without
rain. The beautiful wheat fields dried up, and the crops died. Then there were no plants to keep the soil in place.
All that was left was bare, ugly, dry dirt.
Then the wind started to blow. With no trees to prevent it, the wind gathered up the soil into huge black
clouds that travelled for miles. These clouds were called dust storms, and it was impossible for people to get away
from them. Dirt is collected in people’s houses. It fell into their food. It got into their noses, mouths, and eyes.
People wore masks, but the dust still clogged their lungs, causing many people to get sick. The dust even fell very
high in a few places. Everything was buried in the dust, and farm animals died without food. The serious storms
punished everyone and everything. The Great Plains became known as the Dust Bowl.
This was the worst natural disaster ever to hit the United States. But some people believed the farmers
deserved what happened to them because they did not care for the soil. They said the disaster could be prevented
if the farmers were wiser and more careful.

At first, I could hardly see anything. After moving down through dark, narrow caves, my eyes were not
used to the light. But when I could focus again, I stood in surprise.
“It’s a ... seal” cried.
“Yes. Axel,” my uncle said, “and I shall give it my name, as I discovered it!”
There was a great lake or even an ocean. The shore was covered with small shells where the first living
beings lived. Around this sea stood a huge rock wall.
I could see far over this great sea because of a strange light. Not sunlight, of course, as we were deep below
the surface. No; with its bright, clear whiteness, the light must have been electric (电的).
We kept quiet inside a cave that must have been several miles high.
Human words cannot describe the discoveries of those who have been deep into the earth. My imagination
was powerless before such wonders. I felt surprised and quite scared at the same time. However, the soft salty air
cheered me up. After many days in much narrower spaces, it was a great relief.
“Ready to walk a little now ” asked my uncle.
“Yes, certainly.”
“Well, let us follow the shore then,” he said, and we began to explore.
Soon in front of us appeared a forest with trees like umbrellas. “Mushrooms !” said my uncle. And he
was right! There were mushrooms in their thousands, and each at least nine meters high. How excellent they
were!
“Wonderful!” cried my uncle. “Now look under your feet.”
I hadn’t noticed the many bones under our feet as we walked. Suddenly I thought, if once these monsters
lived here, might some still walk through these dark forests I looked around nervously, but we were the only
living beings in this underworld. Thankfully!
Finally, we returned to the cave we had entered from, and I went to sleep with strange thoughts. Where did
this underground sea end Where would we go

Do you want to live in a beautiful world As we all know, we have only one earth and we can have a healthier life
if the environment is good. So it is our duty to save and protect the earth. First, we can stop using cars. We can
go to school or work on foot or by bus. It not only can protect the environment, but also is good for our health.
Second, we are supposed to sort the rubbish into different kinds because some can be reused or recycled. Third,
we had better plant trees. What’s more, stop littering! It’s necessary to put things you don’t need in the bin.
It’s also important to sort the rubbish, which can turn waste into treasure. We can remember to turn off the
water taps after finishing washing and turn off the lights when leaving the classroom.
I think if everyone does a little, we can make a big difference to build a happier earth.
