Do you know the sugar painting It is a painting made of sugar. It’s the sugar for us to taste,
and the painting for us to admire.
Since the Warring States Period (战国时代), the ancient people have loved sweets and
developed methods of producing sugar. In the Tang Dynasty, there was huge progress in the
technology of sugar making. And sugar, the precious product once only served to the emperors
and princes, also went into common people’s homes. With the cultural and economic development
of Song and Yuan Dynasties, people became less interested in only tasting sweetness. In the Ming
Dynasty, some people added pictures with good luck into the bowl of sugar, and the sugar painting
appeared.
Sugar painters use syrup (糖浆) as the material, a spoon as the “paintbrush”, and a smooth
table as the “paper”. To make syrup, they have o make sugar hot before painting. Since syrup may
become hard if it cools, the painters have to produce the work very quickly.
However, it’s a pity that this folk art is dying recently. The sugar painting that used to be
rich in shapes has become poorer and poorer because of fewer needs. What’s worse, few people
seem to be willing to pass on the art except those aging sugar painters.
Now, the sugar painting has been listed as an intangible cultural heritage in China. The art
should be remembered and passed on.

As it is known to all, China has many folk games filled with wisdom. You may have
already played many of them before. Now, let’s take a look at three of them.
Luban Lock
Luban Lock was first created by Chinese carpenter Lu Ban about 2,000 years ago. It is said
that Lu Ban used six wooden pieces to make a toy that looks like a lock for his son. The lock has a
lot to do with solid geometry It’s hard to separate the six pieces. However, it is easier
to unlock a Luban Lock than to put it back together. Now, there are Luban Locks made up of nine
or more pieces.
Huarong Pass
Huarong Pass is a traditional Chinese block-moving puzzle. Every block is named after a
character in the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, like Cao Cao, Zhang Fei and Zhao Yun.
To succeed in the game, players have to move the blocks to get “Cao Cao” out. This is a test of
one’s math knowledge, for example the knowledge of geometric area According to
the Chinese Puzzle website, it takes at least 81 steps to set “Cao Cao” free.
Tangram
Tangram is a classic Chinese puzzle made of seven flat shapes. These pieces can form a
square when they are put together. By rearranging (重新排列) them, you can create thousands of
different pictures, like animals or objects. This puzzle helps improve geometry skills and
creativity. It’s fun to see how many shapes you can make!
1.Which of the following statements about Luban Lock is TRUE

Do you or your friends use filters (滤镜) on TikTok or other apps for fun What about
making yourself “look better” Changes are coming to TikTok that could affect how users under
18 use the app.
In late November, at TikTok’s European Safety Forum in Dublin, the social media company
announced that users under 18 will no longer be able to use filters that change their appearance,
such as making their lips bigger or changing how their skin looks, reported The Guardian. This
rum includes the well-known “Bold Glamour” filter, called out in 2023 for giving users a
model-like look. However, fun filters, like those that add dog cars or other silly effects, will
remain available.
These changes respond to a November report by the children’s online safety nonprofit
Internet Matters. Based on a survey of nearly 100 teens and their parents across six countries, the
report found teens value authenticity (真 实 性 ), belonging and connection in their ermine
lives-things that apps like TikTok offer. However, beauty filters can be especially harmful to teens
who are still discovering their identity and self-image. Unlike fun effects, beautifying filters lead
to a skewed (歪曲的) view of the world where perfect images are seen as normal, the report states.
Even worse, beauty filters can be hard to notice and difficult to tell apart from real life,
causing teens and older users to notice problems with their looks they hadn’t before. A
17-year-old girl from Sweden in the survey shared, “I tested an effect…that would make my lips
look bigger. From never having had anything against my lips before, I can no longer look at them
without feeling that they are far too small and should look more like the effect. In this way, filters
can also give me emotional problems about my] body and anxiety.”
Outside of TikTok’s filter block, teens in the survey suggested required tags on filtered
images and videos. They believe these tags could cut down on filter use and encourage users to
accept their true looks. Other suggestions included better education on social media skills and
stronger content moderation (内容审核) based on users’ age.
While social media offers teens many benefits, continued efforts are important to protect
their safety and well-being as they grow into adults.
1.What type of filters will TikTok ban for users under 18
A.Filters that add funny effects.
B.Filters that change the background.
C.Filters that adjust brightness-and darkness.
D.Filters that change users’ physical appearance.
2.What did the report discover about teens
A.They prefer fun filters over beauty filters.
B.They struggle to identify filtered images.
C.They appreciate authenticity in their online interactions.
D.They have a strong sense of self-image and identity.
3.According to the article, how can beauty filters negatively affect teens
A.By causing addiction to social media platforms.
B.By changing beauty standards and causing body anxiety.
C.By making them feel disconnected from reality.
D.By increasing their dependence on others’ approval.
4.What does the second-to-last paragraph mainly talk about
A.The possible effects of the filter ban.
B.A comparison between filtered images and videos.
C.Suggestions for addressing the filter problem.
D.The role of content moderation in online safety.
5.What is the best title for the text
A.Should teens use filters B.Beauty bumps against reality
C.The effect of TikTok D.Teens’ anxiety about appearance

Typhoons are powerful tropical storms that form over warm ocean waters. They start as
clusters (簇) of thunderstorms. When the ocean surface is warm, it heats the air above, causing it
to rise and create a low-pressure area. This rising air cools and forms clouds, releasing heat, which
fuels the storm.
As the storm grows, it begins to rotate due to the Earth’s rotation (自转), forming a cyclone
The winds spiral (旋转) around the low-pressure center, and if conditions are right, the
storm becomes a typhoon. Typhoons bring strong winds and heavy rain, causing significant (重大
的 ) damage when they hit land. Knowing how they form helps us prepare for these natural
disasters.
So, why are some ocean waters warm enough for typhoons This is usually linked to
climate (气候) and ocean currents (洋流). In tropical regions, sunlight is more direct, leading to
warmer surface temperatures year-round. Ocean currents also play a role, moving warm water
around the globe. This creates large areas of warm water, which are perfect breeding (滋 生 )
grounds for typhoons. For example, the Western Pacific Ocean, where many typhoons form, has
consistently warm waters.
Human activities can also indirectly influence the conditions for typhoon formation. Global
warming, caused by the increase of greenhouse gases, leads to rising ocean temperatures. Warmer
oceans provide more energy for storms, potentially (可能地) making them more intense (强烈的)
and destructive. While we can’t stop typhoons from forming, understanding their science helps us
to predict (预 测 ) them better and develop strategies (策 略 ) to minimize their impact. This
knowledge is crucial for coastal communities to protect themselves.
1.What is the first step in typhoon formation
A.Warm ocean water heats the air.
B.Winds spiral around a low-pressure center.
C.The storm begins to rotate.
D.The storm hits land.
2.What causes a storm to start rotating
A.Human activities. B.Ocean currents.
C.Earth’s rotation. D.Sunlight.
3.According to the passage, what is the main reason why some ocean waters are warm enough for
typhoons
A.Heavy rain and strong winds.
B.The presence of coastal communities.
C.Direct sunlight and ocean currents.
D.Human activities and global warming.
4.What is the impact of global warming on typhoons
A.It stops typhoons from forming.
B.It makes typhoons less destructive.
C.It potentially makes typhoons more intense.
D.It helps us predict typhoons better.
5.How is this passage organized
A.By introducing a problem and then proposing solutions.
B.By presenting a phenomenon, explaining its causes, and discussing related factors.
C.By comparing and contrasting different types of storms.
D.By listing historical events and their impacts.

A bestseller, Willpower: Rediscovering Our Greatest Strength, suggests that willpower (意
志力) is the ability to make decisions that are better for us in the long term, rather than in the short
term.
Here is a famous experiment in the book: The Marshmallow Test. In 1972, Professor Walter
Mischel tested the willpower of 600 four-year-old to six-year-olds. In the experiment, each child
was left alone in a room for fifteen minutes with a marshmallow (棉花软糖) on a table in front of
them. They were given two choices: they could either eat it or, if they waited fifteen minutes,
they’d be given a second one (and then they could eat both).
So, what did the kids do Well, 70% ate the first marshmallow within the fifteen minutes.
But the other 30% showed willpower—they controlled themselves and waited for the second
marshmallow. But then Mischel discovered something really interesting. Twenty years later, he
got in touch with the children.
And he found that those who’d shown strong willpower were getting better marks at
university and were more popular.
Willpower is like a muscle, and the more you exercise it, the ______ it gets.
So, if you do daily “self-control exercises”, such as making your bed or brushing your teeth,
you’ll improve your overall willpower. And daily willpower exercises will help you with those
bigger goals, such as studying for an exam or training for a marathon.
Be careful though. Just like any muscle, your “willpower muscle” can get tired. If you’ve
had to do lots of things that require willpower, take a break or give yourself a treat. That way, you’
ll build up your willpower again.
And one last thing, the writer mentions people who learn foreign languages usually have a
lot of willpower.

If you don’t use it, you lose it. At least, that’s how the old saying goes. It refers to the idea
that something that does not get used often quickly falls into a state of decline (衰 退 ). For
example, a hobby that you haven’t done for a few years, like playing the piano. The next time you
pick it up, maybe you’ve forgotten altogether! In order to avoid this, people take usual exercise to
keep their skills well-practiced.
Well, what about the brain As we age, our brains can naturally begin to decline. In some
cases, this can lead to certain brain problems: such as dementia (痴呆). However, all is not lost
because these days it’s easy to train your brain. Smartphones and apps provide programs that can
test, keep and even improve our memories and a number of other brain skills. With a little practice
every day, we can keep our brains active, right
Well, no, actually. According to a report from the Global Council on Brain Health, even
though many people think it is beneficial to play some online games that are designed to improve
brain health, the evidence (证据) of the benefits is “weak to non-existent”. Playing a “brain game”
might cause improvements in game performance, yet it hasn’t proven to a believable result in
people’s daily cognitive (认知的) abilities.
Don’t lose heart, though. There are other ways to develop the brain. It suggests trying new
activities which can make you think in new ways, let you connect with others socially and help
you lead a healthy life. Among their suggestions are practicing Tai Chi, taking photography
classes, learning new technologies, gardening, art projects or volunteering.
There’s more good news, too. James Goodwin, chief scientist at Age UK, has said that
brain decline is not unavoidable. As long as the activities are “new to you and require your full
focus”, they can provide benefits for brain health. So, hurry up, get out there and try something
new. Maybe it’s time to try that hobby you’ve always wanted to do.

Although the project was initially criticized for high costs, its long-term benefits
in flood prevention have proven its value.”
What accounted for the sudden
Three innovative methods have been adopted to preserve the Yellow Crane
Tower.”
Firstly, Secondly...
因果逻辑:due to, as a result of...
同义替换识别:如原文“reduce emissions”对应选项“cut down on greenhouse gases”。
imbalance”)。
Despite initial challenges, the implementation of the smart grid system in Wuhan has
significantly improved energy efficiency by utilizing AI-driven real-time monitoring.”
The smart grid system improves energy efficiency using AI monitoring.”
“What is the key technology enabling automatic obstacle avoidance ”
图表:2015-2025 年湖北空气质量 PM2.5 浓度变化 → 问题:“Which year saw the most
significant improvement ”
问题:“What other measures could be taken to protect the Yangtze River Give two examples.(” 需
忽略限定词:如“primarily”“only”改变句意(如“mainly caused by industry” vs. “caused by
industry”)。
科技词汇:AI-driven(人工智能驱动)、renewable energy(可再生能源)、carbon sink(碳
River(清江)。

The art

When the ocean surface is warm, it heats the air above, causing it to rise and
create a low-pressure area. This rising air cools and forms clouds, releasing heat, which fuels the
storm.” 故选 A。
根据“As the storm grows, it begins to rotate due to the Earth's rotation (自转),
forming a cyclone (气旋).”
So, why are some ocean waters warm enough for typhoons This is usually
linked to climate (气候) and ocean currents (洋流). In tropical regions, sunlight is more direct,
leading to warmer surface temperatures year - round.”
Global warming, caused by the increase of greenhouse gases, leads to rising
ocean temperatures. Warmer oceans provide more energy for storms, potentially (可能地) making
them more intense (强烈的) and destructive.”

1.How many children got two marshmallows in the Marshmallow Test in 1972
A.180. B.240. C.420. D.600.
2.In Paragraphs 2&3, the famous experiment explains __________.
A.more kids have stronger willpower
B.willpower influences people’s lives greatly
C.how people practice children’s willpower
D.marshmallows can help improve willpower
3.What word may be put in “__________” in Paragraph 4
A.weaker B.stronger C.happier D.heavier
4.The writer probably agrees that __________.
A.all the language learners have stronger willpower
B.willpower can’t be improved by doing some daily things
C.young kids don’t need to practice willpower like grown-ups
D.people with strong willpower can achieve their goals more easily
5.According to the passage, people who __________ might have strong willpower.
A.do regular piano practice every day
B.give up morning running halfway
C.eat as much junk food as they like
D.usually get up late on the cold mornings

故选 A。
根据“Willpower is like a muscle, and the more you exercise it,”可知,前文把
So, if you do daily ‘self-control exercises’, such as making your bed or
brushing your teeth, you’ll improve your overall willpower. And daily willpower exercises
will help you with those bigger goals, such as studying for an exam or training for a marathon.”可

C
1.Why is playing the piano mentioned in paragraph 1
A.To introduce the topic of brain decline. B.To explain how to keep physically healthy.
C.To show the importance of practice. D.To describe the meaning of an old saying.
2.According to the passage, how can the brain training apps help you
A.It will improve our memory. B.It can make us smarter.
C.It can do little to train our brains. D.It can protect us from ageing.
3.How can we develop the brain according to the passage
A.Using smart phone regularly. B.Trying some new activities.
C.Playing brain games online. D.Doing what you are good at.
4.What can we infer (推断) from the passage
A.Playing brain games can improve people’s daily cognitive abilities.
B.Playing brain games has been proven to help the brain work better.
C.Repeating the skills you already know will be good for your brain.
D.James Goodwin believes we can do something about brain decline.
5.What does the passage mainly tell us
A.How to keep brain healthy and active. B.How to live meaningfully at an old age.
C.Disadvantages of using smart phones. D.Advantages of trying something new.
