A woman with cerebral palsy (脑瘫) finished the most difficult climb of her life in the Rocky Mountains with the help of a nonprofit organization called No Barriers.
Melissa Simpson, 31, has faced physical challenges in her entire life as she was born with cerebral palsy, weighing less than 2 pounds. She spent her first two months of life on a breathing machine and has always used a wheelchair. Her disability made her an easy target. “People would laugh and make fun of me,” she explained.
From her window, she could see some of the tallest peaks (山峰) in Colorado. Climbing them was her dream, but it was always just out of reach —until recently, thanks to the help from No Barriers.
The organization, which empowers people with physical and mental difficulties to achieve their goals, recently organized a hike in the Rocky Mountains for about 400 people of all abilities. Simpson used a specially designed chair with hand levers (手杆) to power the wheels forward alongside a volunteer team pulling her with ropes. “I don’t let my disabilities stop me. Sometimes I might be like, ‘Oh man, I can’t get through this.’ But I’ve got to change that attitude,” Simpson said.
Simpson’s journey to reaching the peaks outside her window began when she disobeyed a teacher who once told her she “wouldn’t get anywhere in this world” by graduating college with an associate’s degree in 2017. Reaching the peak with No Barriers was an emotional moment for Simpson, who broke down in tears as volunteers carried her to a perch on a rock.
“I don’t think of my disability, and I don’t particularly mind whether to be defined as a disabled person. I can do things, but I do them differently,” Simpson said.
24.What can we learn about Simpson
A.She has an inborn disability.
B.People around her treated her well.
C.Climbing was not difficult at all for her.
D.The way she climbed the mountain was nothing special.
25.What does the underlined word “empowers” mean in paragraph 4
A.orders. B.enables. C.forbids. D.begs.
26.According to the passage, Simpson is disabled but ________.
A.helpful B.generous C.caring D.strong-willed
27.What can be inferred from this text
A.Every coin has two sides B.It’s never too late to learn
C.Actions speak louder than words D.Nothing is impossible for a willing heart
24.细节理解题。根据第二段中“Melissa Simpson, 31, has faced physical challenges in her entire life as she was born with cerebral palsy, weighing less than 2 pounds. She spent her first two months of life on a breathing machine and has always used a wheelchair.”(31岁的梅丽莎·辛普森出生时患有脑瘫,体重不到2磅,一生都面临着身体上的挑战。她出生后的前两个月都是靠呼吸机度过的,一直都要坐轮椅。)可知,关于辛普森,我们能知道她有天生的残疾。故选A项。
25.词句猜测题。根据第三段中“Climbing them was her dream, but it was always just out of reach —until recently, thanks to the help from No Barriers.”(攀登这些山峰是她的梦想,但一直遥不可及——直到最近,多亏了“无障碍”组织的帮助。)以及划线单词句中的“…people with physical and mental difficulties to achieve their goals”(……身体和精神上有困难的人实现他们的目标)故可猜测,划线单词empowers为“使能够”的意思。结合选项B项enables“使能够”意思一致。故选B项。
26.推理判断题。根据第三段中“Climbing them was her dream, but it was always just out of reach —until recently, thanks to the help from No Barriers.”(攀登这些山峰是她的梦想,但一直遥不可及——直到最近,多亏了“无障碍”组织的帮助。)以及第四段中““I don’t let my disabilities stop me. Sometimes I might be like, ‘Oh man, I can’t get through this. ‘But I’ve got to change that attitude,” Simpson said.”(“我不会让我的残疾阻碍我。有时候我可能会说,‘哦,天哪,我熬不过去了。’但我必须改变这种态度。”)可知,根据文章,辛普森有残疾,但意志坚强。故选D项。
27.推理判断题。根据文章大意以及第一段“A woman with cerebral palsy finished the most difficult climb of her life in the Rocky Mountains with the help of a nonprofit organization called No Barriers.”(一位患有脑瘫的妇女在一个名为“无障碍”的非营利组织的帮助下完成了她一生中最困难的攀登。)和最后一段““I don’t think of my disability, and I don’t particularly mind whether to be defined as a disabled person. I can do things, but I do them differently,” Simpson said.”(“我不认为我残疾了,我并不特别介意是否被定义为一个残疾人。我可以做一些事情,但我的方式不同,”辛普森说。)可知,辛普森有残疾,但意志坚强,决心实现目标,从这篇文章中可以推断出心之所愿,无事不成。故选D项。
C
“If your skin is getting older, you are getting older, so be careful,” says Claudia Cavadas at the University of Coimbra, Portugal. Could our fight to remove wrinkles help restore youth both inside and out
As skin ages, more and more cells enter a lifeless state called senescence(衰老). As time marches on, the mechanisms(机制)for clearing senescent cells out start to decline and they build up in tissues. This is bad news. The build-up of these cells has been shown to be a direct cause of some of the conditions that are generally more common in older age.
To support her assumption around wrinkles driving whole-body ageing, Cavadas is planning to test experimental drugs on animal models of aged skin. “The evidence is still fragile. but, in a year, we will have experimental data,” she says.
Whether resisting skin ageing resists whole-body ageing will need to be seen. But there is another good reason to slow down skin ageing at least. Aged skin is worse than young skin at pretty much everything it is supposed to do, says a plastic surgeon. Its barrier functions weaken, wounds are slower to heal(康复), sensitivity to touch declines and its ability to defend diseases is weakened.
How about anti-wrinkle creams At present, there is limited evidence that they are genuine anti-ageing treatments. We do, however, have one method for preventing skin ageing: sunscreen, which absorbs UV rays before they do damage to the skin. It is never too soon to start. Even though the first visible signs of skin ageing usually don't appear until our mid-20s, the potential processes are under way much earlier.
Apparently, wrinkle treatment should no longer be seen as a “skin-deep” thing, but as a vital part of staying biologically young and healthy. Everyone should pay attention to that, because we all have skin in this game.
28. What happens to senescent cells as skin ages
A. They migrate to other organs to avoid damage.
B. They transform into healthy cells automatically.
C. They are efficiently removed by strengthened mechanisms.
D. They gradually store in tissues due to declining clearance mechanisms.
29. What does the underlined word “fragile” in paragraph 3 mean
A. artificial. B. inadequate. C. considerable. D. convincing.
30. According to the text, what is the only proven method to prevent skin ageing
A. Plastic surgery B. Anti-wrinkle creams
C. Sunscreen that blocks UV rays D. Experimental drugs on animal models
31. Why does the author suggest wrinkle treatment is more than just "skin-deep"
A. Because it improves social status.
B. Because it guarantees immortality.
C. Because it replaces the need for exercise.
D. Because it may influence whole-body biological youth and health.
28. 解析:原文第二段明确提到,随着年龄增长,清除衰老细胞的机制衰退(mechanisms for clearing senescent cells decline),导致它们在组织中积累(build up in tissues),故选D项
31. 解析:文章结尾强调,抗皱治疗应被视为保持生物年轻和健康的重要部分(a vital part of staying biologically young and healthy),而非仅表面问题,故选D项

Finland has topped the World Happiness Report for the past eight years, an advantage largely due to the Nordic welfare state, trust in the government, and public policies like free education and universal health care.
But the Finns also find contentment in more attainable ways, such as their close relationship with nature (74 percent of the country is covered by forest) and visiting the sauna daily (there are 3 million saunas for a population of 5.5 million).
Visit Finland, the country's tourism agency, uses the happiness ranking to attract travelers. Last June, it hosted its second "Find Your Inner Finn" master class, awarding winners chosen from a social media challenge a free trip to Helsinki to learn from five locals known as "happiness hackers."
I didn't enter the contest, but I liked the idea. So I sought out some advice from the happiness hackers, and planned a trip to Helsinki last June to put it all to the test.
The hackers armed me with various solutions, both for the trip and to use on my return to the United States. And several told me to visit the saunas. These activities each contained similar goals: Stay present and strive for a minimalist lifestyle that relies on the earth.
As it turns out, happiness is a luxury in America - a privilege, even. I was upset to find that most sauna passes in New York cost upward of $60.
As a freelance journalist, I could not afford to steam like the Finns. But I eventually found a place in Brooklyn that offered a reasonable deal and on Friday evenings began visiting its backyard barrel sauna, soaking tub and one-person cold plunge.
Because I was not about to search for my own food like the Finns, I tried the next best thing: shopping at the farmers' market. I also purchased a pot containing roses and plants with the intention of becoming a gardener.
My kitchen does not get much sunlight, so every morning I carried my little garden to the roof. Some nights I went out drinking and forgot about it. Summer storms soaked the soil. Everything eventually died, and someone threw out the pot.
Soon, even the sauna no longer lifted my spirits. I was sitting at the beach one afternoon, wondering why nature was not making me feel better, when the answer hit me: I was trying too hard to live exactly like the Finns.
I'd been so trying to find the time and money for the happiness hacks that I'd missed the point of what all the hackers were saying: Quiet the mind, and find pleasure in small acts and observations - like a bird taking flight, or talking to trees.
"Simple things," Ms. Pajunen had said. "This is at the core of what Finns have to offer the rest of the world."
32.What is the main reason for Finland's consistent top ranking in the World Happiness Report
A. High GDP per capita B. Low population density
C. Advanced technology industry D. Nordic welfare state and public policies
33.According to the article, what activity do Finns frequently engage in to find happiness
A. Daily sauna visits B. Skiing competitions
C. Attending music festivals D. Shopping at luxury malls
34. Why did the author initially fail to achieve happiness through Finnish methods in New York
A. Unfriendly locals B. Bad weather conditions
C. Lack of saunas in the city D. High cost and forced imitation
35. What core philosophy did the "happiness hackers" emphasize
A. Strict daily routines B. Traveling extensively
C. Appreciating small joys D. Pursuing wealth and fame

Exam taking is a tiring process. 36 Sometimes you have to pay much attention to the books and try to put everything into your brain. Other times, though, you just don’t know what to do with the loads of lessons to study about. Here are some tips on better preparing for a test.
Motivate
First you should motivate yourself. 37 Give yourself some positive goals, like setting the mood (情绪) for it. After all, if you are not emotionally prepared, you wouldn’t expect yourself to be mentally and physically prepared for the test as well.
Memorize
38 . Doing this can be useful especially if you have lots of concepts to remember. Every day make it a point to memorize at least ten terms or ideas. As the days succeed, add ten concepts for every item you have mastered.
Take Notes
If you have the materials, try to summarize them by listing down what you know in key points.
39 . Reread your notes and try to recall how they were discussed by your professor. Look for a review partner because studying by yourself might eventually result in laziness.
Remember that reviewing allows you to recount the lessons and process them more systematically. Give yourself enough time in studying, and beat the nervousness. 40
A. Reviewing is useless if your heart is not into it.
B. It will help you find test taking techniques.
C. Preparing for it is even more challenging.
D. After motivating yourself, check how reliable your memory is.
E. You might find it more comfortable studying in the library than at your own home.
F. When you know you have studied well, you wouldn't have to worry about taking the test.
G. It not only tests your skill in memory recall, but also judges how well you have been studying.
36. C
37. A
38. D
39. G

Sista raced ahead, the sea breeze streaming against her face. Rafi finally caught up and then they rested in the shade.
I’m hungry. I know where there’s a great apple tree.” Sista said, “It belongs to an old lady called Susan who lives in the little house by the hill. I heard she’s stubborn, but that sometimes she gives fruit in return for an errand(跑腿).”
“Let’s go,” Rafi said. They crossed a stream by hopping from rock to rock. Finally, upon a hill top, they saw a splendid apple tree with bright red fruits.
A small farmhouse stood at the bottom of the hill. Rafi’s heart pounded as Sista knocked on the door. An elderly woman answered.
“Yes ” the lady asked, staring at the girls.
“We heard ...“said Sista, her voice shaky, “that we could run an errand for you in exchange for apples.”
Susan raised one eyebrow. “Ah, yes.” She clicked her tongue. “Nothing is free, eh ”
She led the girls into the kitchen. When passing the living room, Sista found that the wall was decorated with colourful crayon drawings, which seem to be children’s. She wondered who drew these since Susan was alone, with no grandchildren, even no families or relatives. The lady grabbed two baskets, one large and one small, and pushed them into the girl’s hands. “Go fill these with e right back.”
The girls raced up the hill to the tree, climbed the branches, and picked the ripest apples. After filling the baskets, they returned to the house.
Susan filled a bag with rice and dried beans, and then she handed it to Sista. “Take this bag and the large basket of apples to the Gomez family. Do you know them ”
The girls nodded. Sista had heard that Mr. Gomez has been sick in bed for a long time and Mrs. Gomez has to raise three little kids.
“Good. And ask them for the payment," Susan added with a tight smile.

参考范文:
The girls hit the road. All the way, they wrestled with the bag and the large basket of apples. “What a heavy basket!” they complained. Finally, they arrived at the Gomez home, sweating like a pig. Mrs. Gomez answered the door. The girls held up the food and said, “This is from Susan.” Mrs. Gomez replied, “Thank you.” Rafi looked down. “She said to ask you for the payment, too.” Mrs. Gomez handed Sista a large sealed envelope stuffed very full. Back at the farmhouse, the girls immediately handed Susan the envelope.
When Susan opened the envelope, the girls saw the payment. “Beautiful!” She began pinning the payment-crayon drawings to the wall. Rafi and Sista broke out in smiles, now knowing that what Susan had done was actually not a deal but a favor for the family. After Susan finished, she joined the girls again. “And here’s your payment,” she said, handing the small basket of apples to the girls. As they walked home, Rafi and Sista enjoyed their treat. The juice was as sweet and warm as the feeling they had inside.盐城市高二英语2024-2025学年度第二学期四校联考5月试题
