I can’t believe I’m doing this! It’s 4:30 in the morning, pitch black and freezing cold. Nevertheless I find myself getting out of bed and getting dressed. A car horn sounds as I’m putting on a thick coat and wrapping a scarf around me. I grab a hat and join Jim in his car. He doesn’t seem to mind it’s cold and dark. In fact, he’ s smiling. “You’re going to love this,” he says as we drive off to the nearest park. I’m not so sure.
At any opportunity Jim will be watching quietly, and sometimes excitedly, through his telescope at a bird. Don’t get me wrong. I like birds, but I just don’t get as crazy about them as Jim. Recently, when he found out that I had never heard the dawn chorus, he insisted that we meet at this unearthly hour and head for the local park.
So here we are. Luckily Jim has brought hot coffee and a warm carpet to sit on. After ten shivering minutes there is a very faint light over the eastern side of the park, a suggestion of the day ahead.
“Listen,” whispers Jim. I listen, nothing. Then clearly and loudly a bird starts singing. “That’s the robin (知更鸟). He’s usually the first.” After a few seconds another bird joins in “A blackbird” and then another “A blue bird”. It’s amazing. Twenty minutes later the whole park is alive with the chorus, calling, singing of birds! And yes, it’s wonderful! The noise is incredible. The lighter the sky becomes, the louder the birds sing, an incredible birds’ concert.
“Wow, so are they singing because they’re happy ” I ask in disbelief.
“Not really,” Jim laughs, “in fact they’re hungry but they need to do two things. One is to defend their territory and the other is to find a female–by singing they can achieve both.” Jim sees my puzzled face and explains.
We listen together for a while and then slowly but surely, as the sun emerges above the trees, the birds stop singing. “Now it’s light enough to find food, and that’s the end of the show today.”
24. What is the author’s initial attitude to the early outing
A. Cautious. B. Reluctant. C. Passionate. D. Indifferent.
25. What makes the author involved in the activity
A. Jim’s insistence on it. B. Jim’s enthusiasm on birds.
C. The author’s interest in chorus. D. The author’s curiosity about birds.
26. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The singing skills of birds. B. The abundant diversity of birds.
C. Various tunes of the “dawn chorus”. D. Lively scenes of the “dawn chorus”.
27. Why do birds sing at dawn according to Jim
A. To guard the land and attract mates. B. To show off their beautiful voices.
C. To extend welcome to the sunrise. D. To fight fiercely for early worms.

The skin is the body’s largest organ. Look at it under a microscope, and you will see thousands of nerve endings that help keep the brain connected to the outside world through touch, pressure, and pain. But Zhenan Bao sees something more.
For Bao, a Stanford chemical engineer focusing on polymers (聚合物), the skin is not only a sensory organ but also a flexible, stretchable, and self-healing material. Bao works in an emerging field that aims to develop electronic skin, or e-skin, to recreate some functions of the human skin for use in artificial limbs (肢) as well as robotics. For people who wear artificial limbs, a sense of touch would improve their quality of life immeasurably.
“Our current electronics are easily broken and difficult to bend or move. But if we can make them all like skin, it can potentially change how humans interact and connect with electronics,” Bao says. Bao sees possible applications for e-skin in wearable devices. “There is a lot of interest in wearable devices that go beyond just measuring how many steps we walk each day, or the heart rate,” she adds.
The key to such delicate applications is that the electronics must be stretchable. That’s where polymers come in. A polymer is a large molecule (分子) made up of smaller molecules that are linked together like a chain. By changing the structure of the molecules, Bao and her team came up with a new flexible material that was perfect for the job.
At Stanford, Bao and her colleagues worked on polymers for displays that can stretch and fold. After more than three years of work, they published a proof-of-principle study in the journal Nature for a super-stretchy polymer. The material can be eventually used for body-worn electronics that measure and display vital signs. Bao is driven by the idea of developing electronics that could benefit medical diagnosis and health care. But she thinks the road to commercialization is long.
28. Which is one of the goals of developing e-skin
A. To touch robots. B. To replace artificial limbs.
C. To aid some disabled individuals. D. To improve humans’ sensory organs.
29. What does Bao expect of e-skin compared to current electronics
A. It will be less convenient to wear. B. It will be more durable and flexible.
C. It will be less interactive with humans. D. It will be more bendable and breakable.
30. What can we learn about the super-stretchy polymer from the text
A. It lacks proof of principle. B. It can forecast the body’s vital signs.
C. It has been commercialized and sells well. D. It is in the research and development stage.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. Electronics: Becoming the Focus of Engineers
B. E-skin: Transforming Human-Tech Interaction
C. A Polymer: Acting as a Perfect Chemical Material
D. Applications: Changing the Structure of the Molecules

In his 1936 work How to Win Friends and Influence People, Dale Carnegie wrote: “I have come to the conclusion that there is only one way to get the best of an argument — and that is to avoid it.” This distaste for arguments is common, but it depends on a mistaken view of arguments that causes problems for our personal and social lives — and in many ways misses the point of arguing in the first place.
Carnegie would be right if arguments were fights, which is how we often think of them. Like physical fights, verbal (言语的) fights can leave both sides bloodied. Even when you win, you end up no better off. You would be feeling almost as bad if arguments were even just competitions — like, say, tennis tournaments. Pairs of opponents hit the ball back and forth until one winner comes out from all who entered. Everybody else loses. This kind of thinking explains why so many people try to avoid arguments.
However, there are ways to win an argument every time. When you state your position, formulate (阐述) an argument for what you claim and honestly ask yourself whether your argument is any good. When you talk with someone who takes a stand, ask them to give you a reason for their view and spell out their argument fully. Assess its strength and weakness. Raise objections (异议) and listen carefully to their replies. This method will require effort, but practice will make you better at it.
These tools can help you win every argument — not in the unhelpful sense of beating your opponents but in the better sense of learning about what divides people, learning why they disagree with us and learning to talk and work together with them. If we readjust our view of arguments — from a verbal fight or tennis game to a reasoned exchange through which we all gain respect and understanding from each other — then we change the very nature of what it means to “win” an argument.
32. What is the author’s attitude toward Carnegie’s understanding of argument
A. Critical. B. Supportive. C. Tolerant. D. Uncertain.
33. Why do many people try to avoid arguments
A. They lack debating skills. B. They may feel bad even if they win.
C. They fear being ignored. D. They are not confident in themselves.
34. What does the underlined phrase “spell out” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Defend. B. Explain. C. Conclude. D. Repeat.
35. What is the key to “winning” an argument according to the author
A. Sense of logic. B. Solid supporting evidence.
C. Proper manners. D. Understanding from both sides.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Voice notes are a highly divisive medium of communication. There are those, like me, who enjoy both leaving and listening to them; and then there are those who dislike them and feel very strongly about that. ____36____ A poll found that 62% of Americans have sent voice notes, and about 30% communicate this way on a regular basis. But even the voice note lovers among us have our limits. All of us know a voice note bore. And it is time to establish some ground rules.
The first rule: only ever leave voice notes for someone that you are confident likes you. ____37____ It is also somewhat self-indulgent (我行我素).While a spot of self-indulgence can be healthy, it is unreasonable to expect someone who dislikes you to indulge you.
Never give complicated instructions in a voice note. ____38____ If you end up leaving a long voice note that contains a mixture of key information and other bits, follow it up with a text that gives the other person the important stuff, so they're not forced to listen straight away.
____39____ Leaving a voice note that is under 10 seconds long-unless you are funny or the other person likes you-is annoying. Type it out instead.
Follow the other person's cues. If they are responding to your eight-minute specials with one-minute voice messages, take the hint. Also, if your message is longer than about four minutes, you should be open to the possibility that the other person is going to take a long time to listen and respond. If your message is upwards of 10 minutes, they might never listen to it. ____40____
All you need do, really, is remember to use a bit of common sense. Modern innovations need not negate good old-fashioned manners.
A. Be at peace with that.
B. Be responsive and informative.
C. You need not keep your messages too short.
D. It seems the haters are losing the battle, though.
E. A voice note is a demand on someone else's time.
F. It suggests limiting voice notes to less than two minutes.
G. These should be typed out so the other person can refer back.

I was backpacking and planned to climb a volcano called Volcan Baru. At 3,474m, it is the highest peak in the country and one of the only places on Earth from where you can see the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans at the same time. It is an active volcano, but last erupted around 1550.
I set off before sunrise. It was a little cold, so I had pulled on tights under my trousers. I intended to reach the top by midday, and then return before dark to get a lift to my hotel.I’ve always felt safe travelling as a woman on my own, which I’ve done since my 20s. I love the freedom. When I got to the base of the volcano at 7 in the morning, the ranger disagreed to let me go alone, but said OK because an American couple were behind me.
The first part of the climb was beautiful. It was not dry as you might imagine a volcano might be — there were trees and flowers all around, and a dirt road for the farmers who worked around there.I walked for an hour and reached a fair height. The views were impressive, so I stopped to take a photograph.
Suddenly I heard violent barking behind me. I turned and saw two dogs running aggressively (挑衅) towards me. I expected them to stop, but they didn’t. As they got closer, I could see their teeth looked sharp, and that they looked angry. There was nowhere for me to run. I tried to keep calm, but my heart was racing. I’d never been bitten by a dog, and I couldn’t help but fear what would happen. They stopped a dozen feet from where I stood and kept barking. I knew they could move fast, so I didn’t want to try to outrun them.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Terrified, I slowly kept walking, saying, “Come on, good dogs!”

W: That sounds great.
M: When I studied in America, I helped a professor organize classes. It’s the most common job for students. What do you plan to do
W: I want to work at a library for about 15 hours per week. Since I worked at my mom’s bookstore during the summers, I think it should be pretty easy for me.
M: Just don’t work too much. It’s common for students to do part-time jobs there but working 10 hours or more every week tends to affect your studies.

W: The first morning we got up early, and then went down to the lake in the snow with our guide. She said we’d got to sail across the lake, climb up some rocks, and then sail back again—all before it got dark! I was afraid I’d never finish all the tasks by the end of the day.
M: And was the rock climbing the hardest part
W: Mm, it was difficult and took ages. But luckily, no one fell and injured themselves.
M: What was it like at the top
W: The view was great! Unfortunately, we all had to leave our mobiles and cameras back at the hotel, so we couldn’t take any photos on the first day.
M: What have you achieved during the trip
W: When we first arrived, most of the girls just wanted to turn round and go home again. But by the last day, we were all enjoying it. And we seemed to be helping each other much more to do things. I can even help my mother cook a meal now.

As he ate, he explained to her that he had recently lost his job and didn’t have anything anymore. However, the man said he wasn’t going to give up and be sad. The woman was very touched. She went to her car and took out a thick coat for the man. When he put his hands in the pockets, he discovered a ten-dollar bill. He wanted to return it to her, but the woman insisted he keep it. He thanked her and said that he would never forget her kindness. After she left, the man bought a comb. He made his hair nice and neat. Then he went to the coffee shop and asked the owner if he could have a job. The owner agreed and asked him to do lots of different jobs. He worked there happily, and he eventually discovered that he could be an excellent cook. He saved enough money to open his own sandwich shop, which became really successful. One day, he saw the woman there and told her that she would never have to pay for anything at his restaurant, because it was her kindness that had made his success possible.

Terrified, I slowly kept walking, saying, “Come on, good dogs!” Suddenly, one dog dashed up towards me, sinking his teeth into my leg. “Oh, my God, I’m in a dog’s mouth and he’s trying to swallow me,” I thought to myself, with the pain taking my breath away as I felt his teeth in my flesh. I picked up a rock to fight him off, but was nervous that he would go for my neck or that the other one would come to attack me together. Facing these two aggressive dogs,I desperately felt at a loss. Hardly could I step out of the trouble on my own.
Just at this critical moment, a pickup appeared, driven by the ranger: Seeing the state I was in, he immediately stopped his pickup, opened the door, and signaled to me to get in. When we reached the base, he helped me bandage the leg up, earnestly reminding me that safety comes first while travelling. I felt relieved and grateful. And from then on, I travel carefully as well as cautiously. After all, nothing is more precious than life.
