Doniece Sandoval convinced the city of San Francisco to donate four old buses and she raised money to turn
them into mobile showers.
An old blue bus pulls up to a wellness center in downtown San Francisco, and a small crowd forms. Young
and old, men and women are waiting to board for their turn to bathe.
This city bus has been modified as a sanitation station(卫生站) with two private bathrooms, each including a
shower, toilet, sink, and changing area. The brainchild of Doniece Sandoval, a former public relations executive,
Lava Mae(a play on the Spanish for “wash me”) provides up to 500 showers a week for the thousands of homeless
people who sleep on the streets in this city.
“We reconnect people with their dignity(尊严) ,” says Doniece.
Two years ago, Doniece overheard a homeless woman on a San Francisco sidewalk say that she’ d never be
clean. “That made me wonder what her opportunities were to actually get clean,” says Doniece. She learned that
San Francisco had only eight public shower facilities. “I thought, if you can put food on wheels, why not showers ”
she says.
Doniece persuaded the city to give her four retired buses that she then had remodeled with$75,000 she’ d raised
on a crowdfunding website. Each bus connects to a fire hydrant(消防栓) for water, which is heated by large batteries
on board. Wastewater is drained into city sewers.
The first bus hit the road in July 2014; a second one rolled out in early 2015. Doniece plans to put the other
two buses elsewhere in the Bay Area and imagines expanding the program internationally.
Those in need of a shower sign up for a 15-minute time period at a local homeless shelter, and Lava Mae
provides towels, shampoo, soap, and a new pair of socks.
“No matter how clean you try to stay on the street, you' re going to be dirty,” said Silas Borden, a military
veteran who showers weekly on a Lava Mae bus in the Mission neighborhood. “And I want to wash it off.”
“It's a humbling experience to see people come off the bus so grateful for something that should be a natural
human right”, says Doniece.
24. What is one of the benefits of Lava Mae according to Doniece
A. Providing free transportation for the homeless.
B. Solving the housing problem of the homeless.
C. Helping the homeless regain their dignity.
D. Offering job opportunities to the homeless.
25. How does Doniece get the money to remodel the buses
A. By using her own savings.
B. By collecting donations online.
C. By asking a local charity for help.
D. By raising funds from the city government.
26. Why does the author mention Silas Borden in the text
A. To demonstrate the practical need for mobile showers.
B. To show the program's popularity among veterans.
C. To criticize the city's lack of shower facilities.
D. To explain the operation process of Lava Mae.
27. What does the underlined word “humbling” in the last paragraph mean
A. Making people feel encouraged. B. Making people feel optimistic.
C. Making people feel scared. D. Making people feel ashamed.

For over two decades, Argentine photographer Irina Werning has been devoted to the remarkable project “Las
Pelilargas” (Spanish for “The Long-Haired Ones”). Through her lens(镜头), she shows the long-standing cultural
traditions of indigenous (本土的 )communities across Latin America, both in rural and urban areas. Werning
discovered that hair is far more than a beauty-related feature; it serves as a living record of ancestral heritages and
a form of resistance(抵抗).
In 2006, while exploring Argentina’ s Andean northwest, Werning was not only fascinated by the sight of
Kolla indigenous women with floor-length hair but also deeply felt a strong urge to connect with these indigenous
communities. Realizing that long-hair traditions were a significant part of their cultural identity, she saw an
opportunity in organizing “long hair contests”. These contests were not merely about documenting their stories but
also served as a bridge to engage more closely with the local people. By creating this platform, she aimed to generate
better understanding and interaction, which was a key motivation behind her decision to organize these contests.
These early efforts gradually evolved into a more profound exploration of cultural resilience(恢复力 ), finally
leading to her landmark project “La Resistencia”, exhibited in Milan in 2024. Focusing on Ecuador's Kichwa people,
she found men and boys wearing braids (辫子), a practice once interrupted by Spanish colonizers.
For them, braids are a powerful act of resistance. A touching photo shows Rumania Cachimuel braiding his
son's hair, a ceremony he was denied as a child. Now, he teaches his children to preserve Kichwa traditions.
Throughout Latin America, hair holds spiritual significance. The Maya's braids symbolize big trees, and
Quechua weavers use hair to tell family tales. Despite the threat of globalization, Werning has found that these
traditions are able to exist long. In Argentina's villages, grandmothers still show off long hair, and the young mix
tradition with modernity, like Kichwa youths in Otavalo wearing braids while using smartphones.
Las Pelilargas, set to be published in 2025, is more than a photo collection. It challenges fixed ideas,
highlighting the role of hair in native masculinity (男子气概) and cultural transmission. Werning's work shows that
hair can express what words cannot. In a world of increasing sameness, her 20-year journey proves that cultural
heritage, like hair, remains strong when rooted in its past.
28. Why did Irina Werning organize “long hair contests” in 2006
A. To promote the beauty of long hair.
B. To connect with Indigenous communities.
C. To find the most beautiful long-haired woman.
D. To start her photography career.
29. What is the significance of braids for the Kichwa people in Ecuador according to the text
A. Braids are a symbol against Spanish colonizers.
B. Braids are a symbol of wealth.
C. Braids are a fashion statement.
D. Braids are used to tell family stories.
30. What can we infer from Kichwa youths wearing braids while using smartphones
A. They prefer tech over tradition.
B. They are abandoning traditions.
C. Braids are merely a fashion trend.
D. They balance tradition and modern life.
31. Which of the following would be the best title for this text
A. Long Hair: Latin America's Artistic & Cultural Wealth
B. Irina Werning: Capturing Indigenous Identity via Hair
C. Hair: A Symbol of Cultural Resistance & Legacy
D. Globalization vs. Tradition: Conflict in Cultural Practices

Intelligent medical systems are changing healthcare services by improving diagnostic (诊断的) accuracy and
treatment efficiency. Smart analysis tools process medical images 10 times faster than doctors, reducing mistakes
by 30%. However, these improvements cause ethical(伦理的) debates. A 2023 survey shows 68% of patients fear
system misreading of health data, while 45% worry about reduced human interaction in medical services. Life ethics
expert Professor Li Ming emphasizes: “Smart tools should assist rather than replace doctors, as they lack necessary
empathy(同情).” Technology companies respond that such systems could ease global doctor shortages, particularly
in remote areas. Governments are exploring operational standards for medical AI.
Ethical disagreements also exist in self-driving technology. While autonomous vehicles might prevent over a
million global traffic deaths annually, they threaten transportation industry jobs— affecting drivers, traffic officers,
road sign suppliers, repair specialists, and car makers. Privacy issues worsen as vehicles collect detailed data: travel
routes potentially influenced by commercial partnerships, passenger conversations, and in-car behaviors. Critical
questions involve data ownership, safety standards, and ethical use of sensitive information.
Technological progress urgently needs ethical guidance. Society must create rules making sure people's health
stays the top concern in developing new tech. Schools should add tech ethics into class plans, teaching students how
to examine fast-growing technologies. Public learning programs through different media should explain the good
and bad sides of smart systems, helping citizens wisely join discussions while making creators more responsible.
International cooperation proves vital as technological development crosses country lines. Countries need
unified agreed right-and-wrong rules and actionable regulations to prevent regulatory(监管的) gaps. For instance,
inconsistent supervision(监督不一致 ) between regions might enable commercial misuse of data. Collective
governance( 集体治理 ) ensures technological progress respects human rights while fully addressing ethical
challenges.
In conclusion, technology remains a human-controlled tool. Only through ethics education, balanced
regulations, and worldwide teamwork can we use intelligent systems responsibly. The goal is to achieve societal
benefits like broader healthcare access and safer transportation, while protecting jobs, privacy, and human dignity.
Only through this multi-aspect approach can technology truly serve humanity without harming fundamental values.
32. Which of the following best represents the overall structure of the text
A. Progress— issues— solutions. B. Comparison— impacts— call.
C. Definition— examples— conclusion. D. Development— views— ideas.
33. What is the main concern regarding self-driving cars according to the text
A. Their inability to save as many lives as expected.
B. Their higher cost compared to traditional cars.
C. The potential loss of jobs and privacy and data security issues.
D. The difficulty in establishing a reliable navigation system.
34. Why do schools need to include technology ethics courses
A. To train students to become more technologically aware.
B. To help students to handle new technologies ethically.
C. To promote the development of AI and self-driving cars.
D. To increase students' interest in technology and humanity.
35. What can be inferred about the role of international cooperation in technology ethics
A. It is mainly for sharing technological achievements.
B. It allows countries to set their own ethical rules based on local needs.
C. It favors technological innovation over ethical risks.
D. It is crucial for setting common ethical standards across the globe.
第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出最佳选项,其中有两项为多余选项。
Flood season brings constant challenges to coastal residents. Storms and hurricanes harm residences seriously.
36 Here's how to strengthen your home defense against rising waters, even if evacuation becomes necessary.
Many mistakenly pile furniture against doors as blocking tools. This common wrong practice fails against
persistent water pressure. Building flood walls or waterproof shields remains the only reliable method for entry
points. Get flexible flood boards, measure door gaps with exactness, and secure them with connectable supports.
37
Water pumps (泵 ) prove valuable. While incapable of handling extreme flooding, portable pumps can
significantly reduce water build-up. 38 Every gallon (加仑)redirected from your basement is a gallon that won't
ruin stored possessions, making pumps worthy investments during alerts.
Focus on keeping the inside safe from wetness, but always remember to take care of the outside parts, too.
Raise electrical systems and clear water flow paths to prevent water backups. 39 In addition, clear away anything
blocking the flow, such as yard waste like dead leaves, to stop water from pooling around your home's base.
40 Take photos of how furniture is placed and pen the types of household devices. This makes insurance
applications easier if things get damaged. After floods, the chance of break-ins increases, so these safety steps are
very important. Keeping full records of what you own helps police quickly find stolen items.
A. Record household valuables systematically.
B. Keep a fire extinguisher accessible at all times.
C. Ensure major pipes direct water at least 5 feet from walls.
D. Make use of their inner advantages to keep out potential risks.
E. These measures will create a close cover, preventing floodwater.
F. They effectively remove standing water in medium-level situations.
G. These natural disasters often destroy electrical systems beyond repair.

The Voice in the Box
When I was young, my family had one of the first neighborhood phones. I vividly recall the polished oak case
on the lower stair landing, with the shiny receiver on its side and our number, 105. Too small to reach it myself, I
was fascinated when Mom used the phone, especially when she lifted me to talk to Dad on business— it was magical.
Then I discovered “Information Please”, an operator who seemed all-knowing. Mom could get any number
from her, and she'd tell the correct time when our clock stopped.
My first personal encounter with her was when I hurt my finger with a hammer in the basement. Alone and in
pain, I dragged a footstool(脚凳) to reach the phone and called for help. Her gentle voice guided me to ease the pain
with ice.
After that, I called her for everything. She helped with my geography lessons, assisted with my maths and
advised on my pet chipmunk's diet.
When my pet canary (金丝雀) died, I was heartbroken. I called “Information Please” and poured out my
sorrow. She listened patiently and then said, “Paul, I know it's hard. Birds bring so much joy with their songs. But
remember, in nature, all things have their cycle. Your canary's beautiful spirit isn't truly gone. It's now in a different,
perhaps more beautiful world, where it can sing even more freely. Always remember that there are other worlds to
sing in.” Her words, though simple, brought a glimmer of comfort to my grieving(悲痛的)heart.
When I was nine, we moved to Boston. Back then, telephone systems varied greatly by region. In my hometown,
Seattle, reaching “Information Please” was easy. But in Boston, with its different telephone infrastructure(基础设
施), I had no idea how to access a similar service. Despite missing my mentor(导师,顾问) dearly, I couldn't find a
way to call her.
But as I grew into my teens, those childhood conversations remained vivid. In moments of doubt and confusion,
I'd recall the security I felt when calling “Information Please”. I was grateful for her patience, understanding, and
kindness towards a little boy like me.

1.续写词数应为 150 个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Years later, during a short stay in Seattle on my way to college, I dialed “Information Please”.
Three months later, I called for Sally again, only to learn she’ d passed away but left me a special message.
