The Taklimakan Desert(塔克拉玛干沙漠),one of the largest deserts in the world, used to be a huge area full of sand. In the past, it was a vast sea of sand with very little life. The sand dunes(沙丘) were high, and the weather was extremely hot and dry. It seemed like a place where nothing could grow.
But things have changed greatly. Chinese scientists and workers decided to fight against the desert. They have been working hard to turn this desert green. They came up with many good ideas. First, they planted special trees and plants. These plants have strong roots that can hold the sand and their leaves can stop the sand from moving.
To help the plants grow, people also built a smart water-giving system which is called “drip irrigation”. It works like a tiny water drop falling onto the roots of plants slowly. This way, the plants get enough water without wasting it. The water-saving method is very important because water is so precious(宝贵的) in the desert.
Year after year, their hard work paid off. Now, large parts of the Taklimakan Desert are covered with green plants. There are rows of trees and areas of grass. and even some small lakes have appeared. The green plants not only make the desert look beautiful but also stop the sandstorms. Some animals that left the desert before are coming back because they can find food and water here again. The change is not only good for the environment but also for the people living around the desert.
Local people are also happy about the change. They can grow some fruits and vegetables in the green areas. Some even have started new businesses. For example, they offer camel rides in the green areas to tourists and show tourists around the “green desert”. They also sell local handicrafts(手工艺品) to the visitors. These brings more money to their families and makes their lives better.

China is taking big steps to help people stay healthy. The government recently announced it will open more special “weight clinics (诊所)” in hospitals. These clinics use doctors, food experts, and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to help people lose weight safely.
At a press meeting in Beijing, Lei Haichao from the National Health Commission (NHC) said the plan is part of a new health-first strategy (策略). The news quickly gained popularity online. Many people shared funny posts and drew cartoons about exercising and eating healthily.
Why does it matter Half of Chinese adults are now overweight. If nothing changes, this number could rise to 70% by 2030. Being overweight can lead to health problems like diabetes. To prevent this, China started a three-year “weight management” campaign (运动) in 2024. Weight clinics are a key part of this plan. Besides clinics, many cities also take the suggestions and build millions of sports parks and walking paths for citizens. More Chinese people are exercising outdoors.
Food habits are changing too. New dietary guides mention healthy meals for different cities, such as steamed fish with millet (谷子) rice and vegetables in central China, and fresh seafood with vegetables in the south. People are choosing foods which have less sugar and oil. Office workers prefer salad bowls with chicken or fish. Even holiday snacks like moon cakes are now smaller and healthier. Doctors mix old Chinese recipes (配方) with modern science. For example, Shaanxi noodles now have more vegetables and tofu.

What happens when street dance meets Chinese martial arts (武术)
Earlier this month, Song Haoming, 10, and Fu Junxi, 14, made history at Juste Debout 2025 in Paris. Juste Debout is the world’s biggest street dance competition. In the finals, they danced Hip-Hop (嘻哈). They beat stronger adult dancers to enter the final four. Few had expected them to get this far.
In their dance, they used cool Drunken Fist (醉拳) and Tai Chi moves, which impressed the audience deeply. These martial arts elements (元素) added lots of energy to their performance. “The kids made up the moves themselves,” said Ms. Jia, Fu’s mother. “Their hard work paid off, and you could feel the excitement there.”
Chinese elements have been used in street dance before. “Back in 2018, we used traditional culture in our dance called Yellow River,” said Mr. Zhang, who works at CHUC. "We won the Lotus Award, China’s top dance prize." The use of Chinese elements allows for more possibilities to explore the art of street dance.
Besides Song and Fu, three other children took part in this year’s Juste Debout event. They also did well in their group. "All five of our children made it to the final eight in their groups," said Pan. “But there are many more talented kids in our country. They just need a chance to show themselves.”
