When Zhou Longshan started filming birds 10 years ago at Baiyangdian Lake, a major wetland in northern China, he just wanted to record his favorite species—egrets. Then, things snowballed. In the following years, the teacher became a bird-watcher, a volunteer ranger at the lake, a photographer documenting over 110 bird species and an educator popularizing bird-related information among students. “Sharing bird-protection knowledge with children can make them feel the beauty of their hometown and the importance of birds, and help them cultivate the habit of protecting birds from an early age,” he says.
Over time, Zhou’s interest in birds continued to grow. In 2021, he was appointed as a bird observer by the natural resources bureau (自然资源局) of Anxin county, responsible for conducting regular patrols (巡逻) and popularizing bird-related knowledge. To monitor birds, Zhou would ride a bike to Baiyangdian almost every day before dawn. whatever the weather. He would record the birds appearing at the lake, along with their locations, where they fed and when they migrated, thus providing reference data for staff members of the natural resources bureau of Anxin county.
Although Zhou takes delight in the role, there are still many challenges. Sometimes, he has to navigate earth embankments on his bike. One summer day in 2021, he fell into a ditch with water more than a meter deep, resulting in water damage to his cellphone.
However, these difficult episodes have not undermined Zhou’s love of birds. Over the years, he has taken more than 100,000 pictures of the birds at Baiyangdian. During his spare time, he reads books on China’s birds, talks with other enthusiasts and university professors, and updates his WeChat official account to introduce Baiyangdian to a wider audience.
These days, Zhou’s schedule is growing busier. In addition to his regular patrols near the lake, he is sometimes invited to local schools to give lectures, keeping students informed about birds and how to protect them. Zhou will retire next month. “I will continue patrolling the lake and photographing the birds to contribute to the protection of birds in my hometown,” he says.

D. He uses social media to introduce Baiyangdian to more people.

Stonehenge is a very famous stone circle located in southern England. For centuries, historians have been extremely confused by it. On Wednesday, researchers brought out new and unexpected information about the six-ton Altar Stone at Stonehenge.
For a long time, people believed that the Altar Stone, which lies in the middle of the well-known circle, came from Wales. However, new research shows that it actually came from Scotland, which is hundreds of miles away. This discovery raises new questions about how people transported the stone about 5,000 years ago. According to a study published in the journal Nature on Wednesday, the Altar Stone probably came from the Orcadian Basin in Scotland, at least 466 miles from Stonehenge.
Chris Kirkland, one of the experts, said this discovery of where the Altar Stone came from showed there was a high level of cooperation from local people during the Neolithic period. Moving such a huge stone from Scotland to southern England by land would have been extremely challenging. So, it’s likely they used a shipping route along the British coast.
Stonehenge is mainly made up of two kinds of stones: sarsen (砂岩) and bluestone. The large sarsen stones mostly came from an area about 16 miles north of the monument. The Altar Stone is considered a bluestone. Studies in the past have shown that most of Stonehenge’s bluestones came from Wales. To find out where the Altar Stone came from, geologists examined its chemical characteristics and analyzed the minerals in the rock. They found that the Altar Stone didn’t match the geology of Welsh rocks.
“While we can now say that this iconic rock is Scottish and not Welsh, the research will still very much be on to pin down where exactly in the north-east of Scotland the Altar Stone came from,” study co-author and Aberystwyth University professor Richard Bevins said.
English Heritage, the organization that looks after Stonehenge, called this an exciting discovery. They said in a social media post that the more we learn about Stonehenge, the more questions we get. The purpose of Stonehenge is still a puzzle. Some people think it was built for astronomical reasons, while others think it was related to human sacrifice (祭祀).
28. What is the second paragraph mainly about
A. The location of the Altar Stone.
B. The reason for building the Stonehenge.
C. The method of transporting the Altar Stone.
D. The discovery of the Altar Stone’s true origin.
29. What played a key part in the move of the stone

30. What does the underlined part “pin down” most probably mean
A. Find out. B. Look down. C. Take on. D. Set off.
31. What can we infer about the purpose of the Stonehenge
A. People think it a mystery forever.

C. People will bring it to light soon.
D. People mostly consider it as a kind of sacrifice.

A surprisingly efficient and powerful Chinese AI model has taken the technology industry by storm. It’s called DeepSeek R1, which makes Wall Street nervous. The new AI model was developed by DeepSeek, a company that was born in 2023. R1 can nearly match the capabilities of its far more famous competitors, including OpenAI’s GPT-4, Meta’s Llama and Google’s Gemini—but it costs much less. The company spent just $5.6 million powering its base AI model, compared with the hundreds of millions of dollars American companies spend.
But R1 gained significant attention this week when the company revealed its shockingly low cost of operation. And it is open-source, which means other companies can test and build upon the model to improve it. The DeepSeek app has been downloaded nearly 2 million times.
AI development needs a lot of power and money. Meta said it would spend $65 billion this year on AI development. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said the AI industry would need even more dollars in investment to support the development of high-in-demand chips (芯片).
Andreessen, who set up Andreessen Horowitz, calls DeepSeek one of the most amazing and impressive achievements that he has ever seen in a post on the Internet. If that potentially world-changing power can be achieved at a significantly reduced cost, it will open up new possibilities and threats to the planet.
Although the cost-saving achievement may be significant, the R1 model hasn’t yet proven it can deal with some of the extremely ambitious (耗资的) AI capabilities for industries that for now still require huge and large amounts of investment.
32. Which makes DeepSeek R1 amazing
A. Its developers. B. Its latest chips.
C. Its cost-effectiveness. D. Its application fields.
33. What is Andreessen’s attitude on capabilities of DeepSeek R1
A. Positive. B. Uninterested. C. Doubtful. D. Negative.
34. What can be inferred about the RI model
A. It reaches perfection. B. It is dangerous for humans.
C. Its cost can’t go down any more. D. It still has technology bottle-neck.
35. Which is the best title for the text
A. DeepSeek R1’s Limiting Factors B. AI’s High-cost Problem
C. DeepSeek R1: Low-cost Wonder D. AI Competitors: A Big Race

This was when the trouble started. We forgot there are two Ramada hotels in the opposite directions. Absolutely unaware of this, we started searching for the way back. Google maps suggested us the shortest route, which was just 20 minutes away by walk. 36
Bangkok felt different after sunset. Walking along the heavily-crowded roads with the dark-red sky felt beautiful. Lost in our talk, we didn’t realize that we passed onto the quieter part of the town.
37 It was closed for redecoration. Unluckily, nobody around us then spoke English. Worse still, we stepped in a local tuktuk (三轮车), which took us to an unknown area for an enormous pay. We had no clue where we were, our mobile phones nearly out of power.

They were both friends and competitors. They had similar taste in music, and had similar dressing styles. They had both devoted themselves to preparing for the upcoming contest.
Grace’s journey to the competition was marked by countless hours of practice and determination. She would rise before the sun, and the studio lights were her only company. Every movement was perfected with unwavering mind. She knew that this competition wasn’t just about personal success; it was also about upholding her school’s honor. “Grace, you’re incredible!” Grace’s dance instructor, Mrs. Anderson, often praised her. “Your hard work will pay off.”
Ellen had been practicing hard for this competition as well. Her love for dance was her driving force. After school, she would head straight to the dance studio, tirelessly perfecting every step. Her dance shoes had become a part of her feet, and her heart burned with a strong desire for victory. “Ellen, you’re a natural,” her fellow dancers would often say. “You’ve got this!”
The day of the competition finally arrived, and there were five competitors fighting for the championship title. Ellen was scheduled to perform before Grace.
As Ellen stood backstage, the butterflies in her stomach seemed to have turned into a whirlwind. She practiced every move once again but suddenly broke her dress with a sharp movement. Panic set in as her mind raced for a solution.
“Ellen, you’re up next!” the stage manager announced.

第四部分 写作(共两节,满分40分)
第一节 应用文写作(满分15分)
【答案】Dear fellow students,
Recently, we’ve noticed that an increasing number of students are relying on AI tools to complete their assignments, which has led to some negative consequences.
To address the issues, we should use AI as a supplementary tool to enhance learning rather than a replacement for our own efforts, which may violate academic integrity principles and result in the lack of originality and creativity. Additionally, it is significant to critically evaluate the information generated by AI rather than accept it blindly.
Let’s use artificial intelligence in a reasonable and responsible manner. Only by doing so can we make the most of AI technology. Your effort counts!

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
【答案】
Grace knew her dress would fit Ellen perfectly, but she hesitated. After all, it was Ellen’s own fault for breaking her dress. However, Grace also understood that sometimes in competition, we should put aside our differences and help each other. She took a deep breath and approached Ellen. “Ellen, I heard your problem,” Grace said with a soft voice, “my dress can fit you perfectly. You can wear my dress on stage.” Ellen’s eyes widened in surprise. “Grace, you would do that for me ” she asked, her voice trembling.“Of course, Ellen,” Grace replied, a gentle smile on her face. “Now, go out there and show them what you’ve got.”
Tears of thanks welled up in Ellen’s eyes as she put on Grace’s dress. She knew that she had let herself down and almost gave up, but Grace’s act of kindness restored her faith in herself. She vowed to herself that she would not let Grace down and would do her best in the competition. Finally, Ellen won the competition with her outstanding performance. But what made her happiest was having such a good friend.
