While on tour in central Thailand, British musician Paul Barton has been surrounded by unruly audiences that pull his hair, steal his music and climb over his piano, while enjoying bananas.
Barton is a rock star to hundreds of hungry wild monkeys that he hopes his music can calm, at a time when Thailand’ s coronavirus-induced tourism gap means fewer visitors to feed them, and less funds for their welfare. “We need to make an effort to make sure that they eat properly. And when they eat properly they will be calmer and will not be aggressive,” said Barton, 59, a long-time Thailand resident.
Barton has played at four venues in Lopburi, a province famous for its attacking monkeys, including at an ancient Hindu temple, a hardware store and a deserted cinema. The monkeys are instantly drawn as he plays Greensleeves, Beethoven’s Fur Elise and Michael Nyman’s Diary of Love, some sharing his stool, others climbing onto his shoulders and touching his head.
Barton maintains focus as a small monkey runs up and down the piano keys as others chew at his sheet music before one tries to take it away. “A wonderful opportunity to see the wild animals just being themselves,” said Barton, from Yorkshire in northern England. “I was surprised to play the piano and find that they were actually eating the music as I was playing it. I wasn’t going to let those things distract (使分心) from the project which is to play the music for these wonderful monkeys.” They are his latest audience, having played Bach, Schubert, Chopin, and Beethoven for more than a decade to elephants at retirement shelters.
Barton hopes to raise awareness of the monkeys’ hunger while also studying their behavioral responses to classical music.
24.What does the underlined phrase “unruly audiences” in paragraph 1 refer to
A.Gentle visitors. B.Rude residents.
C.Hungry elephants. D.Misbehaving monkeys.
25.What does Paul Barton hope to achieve through his performances
A.To make the monkeys happy and satisfied.
B.To study the monkeys’ improper behavior.
C.To ensure that the monkeys have enough food.
D.To promote his own music career.
26.How does Barton act when monkeys interrupt his show
A.He stops playing to shout at them. B.He remains focused on his music.
C.He offers food to distract them. D.He requests assistance from others.
27.What kind of person is Barton according to the passage
A.Kind-hearted and devoted. B.Responsible and caring.
C.Warm-hearted and serious. D.Creative and strict.

Where do the turtles go
Every summer, thousands of endangered green sea turtles climb onto beaches around the world. Each mother sea turtle produces 100 or more eggs in a hole, and covers the hole with sand before she swims away.
Two months later, the eggs hatch(孵化), and the baby turtles climb out of the sand and swim into the ocean. They don’t reappear until they have grown as large as dinner plates. Until now, no one knows where the baby turtles go or what they do.
“if we don’t know where these little turtles are, we can’t protect them,” says Kim Reich, who helps solve part of the mystery.
Her teacher, Karen Bjorndal, has studied green sea turtles for more than 30 years. Every year, Bjorndal goes to the Bahamas Islands. Many young sea turtles come here to live and eat at the end of their childhood.
These turtles are the only sea turtles that live as plant eaters. In fact, their name may be a result of what they eat. The turtles don’t look green but they do have green fat. Scientists learned that the turtles eat green sea plants, which may turn their fat green.
Between 2002 and 2004, Bjorndal caught 44 green sea turtles in the Bahamas. After testing them, she found something to support the 20-year-old idea: baby green sea turtles eat meat before they turn to a diet of plants. In fact, they eat animals that live in the open ocean.
Scientists still need to find where exactly green sea turtles grow. We now know that baby green sea turtles are out in the open ocean, but the open ocean is a big place.
“It is really a problem,” says Bjorndal. The discovery may help us do a better job of protecting this sea animal.
28.What can we learn from the first two paragraphs
A.baby turtles go to the ocean when they are two months old.
B.Mother turtles leave the eggs alone after they produce them.
C.No one knows when turtles appear on the beach.
D.Mother turtles are as large as dinner plates.
29.Kim Reich does research on where baby turtles go because she wants to _________.
A.help her teacher B.prove an idea
C.protect turtles D.become a scientist
30.What does Karen Bjorndal’s research prove about green sea turtles
A.the young live in the Bahamas Islands.
B.The young eat meat before turning to a diet of plants
C.They live in the open ocean for a lifelong time
D.They are the only sea turtles that live as plant eaters.
31.What does the underlined word “It” in the last paragraph refer to
A.Finding out where young turtles grow.
B.Protecting this endangered sea animal.
C.Changing young turtles’ eating habits.
D.Living in the open ocean.

In the animal kingdom, mimics (模仿) are not rare. Stick insects pretend to be twigs. Hawk moth caterpillars resemble poisonous snakes. The examples, though, are visual. Auditory mimicry is rarer. Danilo Russo of the University of Naples Federico II thinks he has found a novel case of it, as he describes in Current Biology. Some bats, he believes, mimic angry bees in order to scare away owls that might otherwise eat them.
Dr. Russo first noticed bat buzzing a few years ago. The noise struck him is similar to the sound of some bees. He wondered whether bat buzzing was a form of mimicry which helped to scare off would-be predators.
To test this idea, he and his colleagues first recorded the buzzing that captured bats made. Then, with protective clothing, they began the more dangerous task of recording the buzzing made by different puter analysis revealed that bees’ and bats’ buzzing were, indeed, similar.
Then the researchers recruited several owls. They put the owls, one at a time, in an enclosure with branches for them to stay on, and two boxes with holes in them. They placed a loudspeaker alongside one of the boxes and, after the birds had settled in, broadcast through it five seconds of uninterrupted bat buzzing and a similar amount of insect buzzing three times in a row for each noise. As a control, they broadcast in like manner several non-buzzing sounds made by bats.
During the broadcasts and for five minutes thereafter, they videoed the owls. After analysis, the results were unequivocal. When they heard both the bat buzzing and the bee buzzing, the owls moved as far from the speakers as they could. In contrast, when the non-buzzing bat sounds were played, they crept closer.
Dr. Russo believes this is the first reported case of a mammal using auditory mimicry to scare away a predator. They strongly suspect, however, that it is not unique. Anecdotes suggest several birds also make buzzing noises when their nests are disturbed. And with the result of the experiment, he therefore predicts that auditory mimicry is far more widespread than currently realized.
32.What was Dr. Russo’s assumption of the study
A.Only some bats have the capacity of auditory mimicry.
B.The buzzing of bats is similar to the sound of some bees.
C.Auditory mimicry is rather common in the animal kingdom.
D.Bats imitate the voice of angry bees to frighten away enemies.
33.How did Dr. Russo test his idea
A.By collecting computer data.
B.By consulting experts in this field.
C.By referring to other scholars’ analysis.
D.By conducting series of scientific experiments.
34.What does the underlined word “unequivocal” in paragraph 5 possibly mean
A.Disappointing. B.Controversial. C.Definite. D.Uncertain.
35.What is a suitable title for the text
A.Animal Mimicry: Buzz off B.Bats: No More Victim to Owls
C.A Self-protection Behavior among Animals D.A New Trick to Scare Away Owls
第二节 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。(每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
Most self-motivation definitions consider how you can find the ability to do what needs to be done without influence from other people or situations. Self-motivation is encouraging yourself to continue making progress toward a goal even when it feels challenging. It’s turning your shoulds into musts. How can you motivate (激励) yourself to achieve your goals 36
Take responsibility for your life. Self-motivation is often difficult because it comes from you. If you don’t take care of the underlying issues that keep you from making progress, you can fall back on blaming (归咎于) others for your failure. In some cases, you can rely on external factors and friends for motivation. 37 In other words, you’re the one who must take charge of your own life.
38 You need a powerful purpose to motivate you. Why do you want to build a business It likely goes back to the ability to do what you want, when you want and with whom you want - the true definition of success. Connect your goals back to your purpose and you’ll never lack self-motivation.
Reevaluate your goals. At any moment, the decision you make can change the course of your life forever. If you focus on your vision and purpose, but you’re still not feeling inspired, you may need to make a decision to go in a new direction. 39
Create powerful beliefs. 40 If you don’t have enough self-motivation, it comes down to one reason: you don’t see yourself as a self-motivated person. Change your negative beliefs into positive ones by conditioning your mind. Catch yourself when you think negatively about yourself and change that self-talk so that it motivates you instead of holding you back.
A.Find your why.
B.Create a great action plan.
C.Here are some tips that might help you.
D.You need to have a clear purpose to get enough self-motivation.
E.The only limitations in our lives are the ones we put on ourselves.
F.But at the end of the day, you’re the one who has to put in the work.
G.That is to say, if your why isn’t motivating you, then you may need a new why.

I was impressed. What I learned from my mom is that getting what we want might not 51 us the way we hope-that doing what excites you at the moment isn’t as important as doing what 52 . I enjoy watching TikTok more than serving tables, but serving tables pays, so it should be of first 53 .

第二节 (满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One Saturday morning when Susan went, as usual, to Thompson’s hotel, to receive the price of her mother’s washing for the guests, which amounted to five dollars, she found the hotel keeper in the yard.
He was obviously in bad manners with some dealers with whom he had been talking. He held in his hand an open wallet, full of bills. Hardly noticing the child as she made her request, except to swear (骂咧咧) at her for troubling him when he was busy, he handed her a bank note. Glad to escape so easily, Susan rushed out of the gate, and when she stopped to see the money safely in the folds of her worn scarf, she discovered that he had given her two bills instead of one. She looked around. Nobody was near to share her discovery, and her first feeling was joy at the unexpected prize.
“It is mine, all mine,” she thought. “I will buy mother a new coat with it, and she can give her old one to sister Mary, and then Mary can go to the Sunday school with me next winter. I wonder if it will buy a pair of shoes for brother Tom, too.”
At that moment she realized that the hotel keeper must have given it to her by mistake, and therefore she had no right to have it, as she was always told by her mother the Golden Rule. What belongs to you is yours, and what doesn’t belong to you should not be accepted.
But again the voice of owning it by herself whispered, “He gave it, and how do you know that he did not intend to make you a present of it Keep it; he will never know it, even if it should be a mistake; he had too many such bills in that great wallet, so it doesn’t matter if missing one.” While this conflict was going on in her mind between good and evil, she was hurrying homeward as fast as possible.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

Use Electronics ProperlyDear fellow students,
Nowadays, we are surrounded by various electronic devices, like smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Many of us spend hours scrolling through social media, playing games, or watching videos, neglecting our studies and physical activities. This excessive use can lead to eye strain, poor sleep, and even social isolation.
To address this, we should set clear time limits for using electronics, say, no more than one hour per day for non-study purposes. Additionally, take regular breaks to protect our eyes and engage in outdoor activities. Let’s use electronics wisely for a healthier and more productive life.
Thank you!
67.Yet, before she came in sight of her home, she stopped. As she crossed the little bridge over the narrow stream, her eyes fell upon a bench where her mother and she occupied and had lengthy conversations. The Golden Rule her mother shared then popped into her mind. Ultimately, it was good that defeated evil in this conflict. Turning suddenly around, she hastened along the road with breathless speed until she found herself once more at the hotel’s gate. Glimpsing Susan again at his side, the hotelkeeper asked impatiently. “What do you want this time ” “Sir, um… you paid me two bills, instead of one,” Susan murmured, trembling in every limb.
The hotelkeeper looked at Susan. His eyebrows rose in absolute astonishment. A few seconds later, realizing what had happened. He stretched out his hand and tapped Susan on the shoulder gently, his face splitting into a wide smile, “Keep it! The other bill is for you as the present of your honesty.” “No, sir, thank you,” Susan blurted out. “I do not want to be paid for doing right.” Desperate to tell her mother what she had done, Susan waved goodbye to the hotelkeeper and returned to her humble home with a lightened heart. Never would she forget this day through the course of her whole life.
