By the middle of the last decade,I had been studying Indian Butterflies for over 20 years.
However,I had never observed butterflies at high altitudes in the trans-Himalayan habitat. So,in
2015,I decided to visit Ladakh to search for butterflies.
My first “butterflying”visit to Ladakh was in June 2016,then in July of the same year,
followed by another visit in August 2018.For these visits,I charted out a two-week schedule on
each occasion.I covered some of the well-known locations.
Each habitat we explored had its unique mix of butterfly species.By trickling streams and
wet areas,we found Small and Dusky Green Underwings, along with numerous Meadowblues, all
part of the Blues family. In alpine meadows, countless white and yellow butterflies from the
Yellows and Whites family fluttered(翩翩飞舞)about.More than once,I'd spot a white or yellow
butterfly flying across the meadow, and chase after it,only to find myself out of breath in Ladakh’s
thin air while the butterfly gracefully flew away.Once,I chased a Butler's Dwarf butterfly for 15
minutes, managing only a few photos before it disappeared.Another time,I spotted dozens of
Clouded Yellow butterflies in an alpine meadow.I spent half an hour chasing them, only for them
to fly away each time.
Over the course of multiple visits to Ladakh for butterfly observation,I've had the
remarkable opportunity to photograph more than 40 “lifers”—species I encountered for the very
first time. These discoveries have added valuable knowledge to the field and led to the publication
of two research papers in the “Journal of Threatened Taxa.”
In addition to this,I partnered with the Snow Leopard Conservancy to create a small booklet
showcasing 50 butterfly species found in Ladakh, with the goal of raising awareness and
promoting butterfly watching as a unique and sustainable activity. This initiative aims to inspire
both locals and tourists to explore the rich biodiversity of the region, while fostering a greater
appreciation for Ladakh's delicate ecosystems.
24.Why did the author decide to visit Ladakh
A.To carry out a travel schedule. B.To search for butterfly habitats.
C.To survey butterflies at high altitudes. D.To recommend tourist attractions.
25.Which best describes the author's chasing butterflies
A.Challenging and fascinating B.Scary and exciting.
C.Embarrassing and amusing. D.Dangerous and interesting.
26.What is the author's purpose of making a booklet
A.To document insect species in India. B.To encourage eco-aware exploration.
C.To promote local tourism in Ladakh. D.To compare butterfly research findings.
27.What is the best title for the text
A.Uniqueness of Butterflies B.AFascinating Butterfly
C.Biodiversity in Ladakh D.A Fluttering Discovery

It's one of the most common questions adults ask children:what do you want to be when you
grow up Although childhood is supposed to be fun, kids also discuss important topics regarding their
futures. Now,a new study finds that children who set big goals regarding their future status and
education often set themselves up for success as they age.
The findings, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, are the first to
reveal a connection between life goal development and future success in school or the workplace.
Rodica Damian,an associate professor of psychology at the University of Houston, and other
researchers discovered that as children grow up,their goals naturally begin to change. However,as
some childhood goals fall away, other goals related to a family stay strong. These include being close
to relatives, building more friendships or finding a romantic partner, and even becoming more
involved in the community or helping others.
During the study, researchers compared how their goals evolved as children moved from
adolescence to adulthood and how a person's goals impacted their success in school and as an
employee later on.Overall,a child's goals focusing on their education and future status were the
most consistent predictors of income in adulthood.Simply, when a child dreams big about doing
well in school or achieving great success as an adult, these goals accurately paint a picture of how
successful these children will be.So,the message is simple:dream big and dream of success, kids!
Those goals can drive you to success when you grow up!
“Our work proves a strong connection between a child's life goals, educational achievement,
and future occupational outcomes. This information is valuable for parents and educators who can
use it to encourage children to set ambitious goals.Additionally,it helps develop strategies to
support individuals in achieving their goals and reaching their full potential,"Damian concludes.
28.What does the study mainly focus on
A.Why children change their dreams over time.
B.Whether childhood goals relate to future success.
C.How childhood education determines future career.
D.What impact early experiences have on characters.
29.Which of the following goals remains strong as children grow up
A.Connecting with others. B.Achieving academic success.
C. Hunting for a high-salary job. D.Improving personal social status.
30.What message does the author convey in paragraph 3
A.Future careers is determined by Childhood achievements.
B.Childhood ambition is potentially connected with success.
C.Setting small goals is more beneficial than dreaming big.
D.Adjusting goals can create new opportunities for success.
31.What is the purpose of the last paragraph
A.To summarize learning strategies. B.To offer suggestions for future studies.
C.To stress the significance of the study. D.To point out the limitations of the study.

Over 100 years ago,Alexander Graham Bell asked the readers to do something brave and fresh
—“to found a new science”.He pointed out that sciences based on the measurement of sound and
light already existed. But there was no science of odour(气味).Bell asked his readers to “measure
a smell”.
Today, smart phones provide impressive built-in capabilities based on the sciences of sound and
light:voice assistants, facial recognition and photo improvement. The science of odour does not
offer anything comparable. But that situation is changing,as advances in machine smell, also called
"digitized smell”,are finally answering Bell's call to action.
Whereas human vision mainly relies on cells in the retina(视网膜),smell is experienced
through about 400 types of cells in the nose.Machine smell starts with sensors that detect and
identify molecules(分子)in the air. These sensors serve the same purpose as the cells in your nose.
But to be useful to people, machine smell needs to go a step further. The system needs to know
what a certain molecule or a set of molecules smells like to a human. So,the challenge is
formidable. For that, machine smell needs machine learning.
Machine learning studies the words humans tend to use to describe what they experience when
they encounter specific odour-causing things. However, the web has an unimaginably huge amount
of audio, image and video content that can be used to train artificial intelligence systems that
recognize sounds and pictures. Most people cannot describe smells in word as effortlessly and
recognizably as they can describe sights and sounds. So,researchers weren't able to train really
powerful machine learning models.
However, things started to change in 2015 when researchers launched the DREAM Smell
Prediction Challenge. The competition released data collected by Andreas Keller, and invited teams
from around the world to submit their machine learning models.By 2019,the largest datasets had
grown from less than 500 molecules in the DREAM challenge to about 5,000 molecules.Such
progress in unlocking the code of smell is not only exciting but also has highly promising
application. The future of machine smell looks bright. It also promises to smell good.
32.Why does the author mention Alexander Graham Bell
A.To stress the application of digitalized smell.
B.To prove the current progress in machine smell.
C.To illustrate Bell's research into sound and light.
D.To offer background information of smell science.
33.What does the underlined word “formidable”in paragraph 3 mean
A.Rewarding. B.Inspiring. C.Demanding. D.Confusing.
34.What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A.It introduces the shortage of smell datasets.B.It predicts the trend in machine learning.
C.It explains the use of smell training models.D.It stresses the possibilities of describing smell.
35.What is the author's attitude towards the machine smell
A.Objective. B.Doubtful. C.Optimistic. D.Indifferent.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写最后一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Mrs.Thompson,a retired teacher, was well-known for her insightful advice and genuine
willingness to help others. Many high school students often turned to her for guidance and as her
neighbor,me included.
One afternoon, feeling troubled and uncertain about my future after a disappointing exam,I
decided to knock on Mrs.Thompson's door.
“I don't know what I’m doing with my life,”I admitted,my eyes fixed on the floor.“It feels like
everyone else has it all figured out,and I’m just stuck.“My voice trembled with sadness and a hint
of fear.
I had bombed my last math test, and it felt like that failure stayed in every corner of my mind,
increasing my anxiety about college examination and what I might want to pursue. While my
friends seemed to advance effortlessly through their studies,I was struggling to stay afloat. The
feeling that I was falling behind only deepened my sense of hopelessness.
Mrs.Thompson listened carefully, her face a picture of calm and understanding.Without saying
much,she handed me a small tomato seedling(苗)in a pot.The tiny plant,with its delicate green
leaves, seemed to symbolize a slight sign of hope.
”Let's plant this in the garden,“she said gently."Water it every day and make sure it gets
enough sunlight. But for a whole week, don't focus on its progress.Just trust that it's growing.”
Every day,I faithfully watered the little seedling,as if I was putting my own hopes into it.I
carefully ensured it got the right amount of sunlight, positioning it just so under the sun's rays. With
great self-control,I resisted the urge to examine it too closely. As the days went by,I felt a mix of
eagerness and impatience, like a child waiting for a long-promised gift, longing to see some sign that
my efforts were making a difference.

第二节 :
"Let's go to check on the plant,"Mrs.Thompson said to me a week later. With a heart full of
anticipation,I followed her to the garden. When we reached the spot where we'd planted the
seedling,I was amazed. The once -tiny plant had grown significantly. Its leaves were greener and
more robust, and it stood taller, reaching towards the sky.Mrs.Thompson looked at me and smiled,
“You see, just like this seedling, growth doesn't always happen at a speed we can immediately
notice.Your efforts in studying are like the care you gave this plant. They're working, even if you
can't see the results right away.”
One day,as I bent down to water it,a tiny yellow flower caught my eye.A sense ofjoy and
accomplishment washed over me.That little flower was a symbol of hope and proof that my care
had paid off.It made me realize that just as the seedling needed time and consistent care to bloom,
so did I in my studies.I no longer felt as lost or hopeless. From then on,I faced my study
challenges with newfound confidence, knowing that with perseverance,my efforts would surely
lead to beautiful "blooms"in my future.
