During daily breaks from the world's many dramas, I encountered another: The blue jay(松鸦)in my backyard is a ladies' man.
Each day, he lands on the bird feeder and fills up on seeds and nuts, which makes him a good provider—— an attractive mating advantage for birds that typically stay with one partner. He dutifully delivers food from my place to his home in a tree across the street. Then I noticed him paying regular calls to the row of oaks a few doors down, his mouth full and his feathers a bright blue. I assumed he was visiting a second mate.
My wife was with me once when the jay took his love nest detour(绕道), and I pointed out what he was up to. My wife's response was Socratic: “How do you know where that bird goes ” Based on the research, bird experts would ask the same question and argue that jays are actually no-nonsense birds. Smart, fierce and loyal. They are also industrious, stockpiling food in secret locations for later.
After considering my wife's question, I realized that I might've been too quick to judge the jay. Further evidence soon arrived. After some blackbirds stuffed themselves at the feeder making quick work of the seeds, I left it bare for several days to keep them away. Noticing the empty tray, the blue jay dashed into a nearby tree and pulled out a hidden peanut from the bark. These birds don't just store food; they build reserves. So after finishing the peanut, off he flew into the row of oaks— and emerged to head directly across the street to his home. It was all suddenly clear: That jay didn't have a love nest. He had a nest egg, a little something put away in a few nearby trees to feed his family when food ran low.
Next time I encounter another one of the world's dramas, I won't be too quick to judge.
24. What did the author assume about the jay's taking a detour
A. It was building a new nest. B. It was guarding its territory.
C. It was attracted to some food. D. It was involved in a secret affair.
25. What caused the author to rethink his assumption about the jay
A. A question from his wife. B. A research study on blue jays.
C. A sudden change in the jay's behavior. D. A conversation with other bird experts.
26. Why did the jay make the detour
A. To create a backup food source. B. To seek extra food for his family.
C. To build a shelter in a nearby tree. D. To take a brief rest during his flight.
27. What is the best title for this text
A. A Bird-watcher's Inspiring Tour B. What a Charmer: A Jay's Love Story
C. The Feeder Drama: Who Ate the Seeds D. The Mysterious Ladies’ Man in My Backyard
C
If you ever feel that the world is against you, you are not alone. We all have a tendency to assume that when anything goes wrong, the fault lies within some great intrigue (诡计) against us. If a co-worker fails the deadline, they must be trying to ruin career. When WiFi in a coffee shop is not working, the staff must be lying about having it to attract you in.
But the simple fact is that these explanations, which we tend to jump to, are barely true. Maybe your co-worker thought today was Tuesday, not Wednesday. Maybe the WiFi router was just broken. This is where Hanlon's razor comes in—a useful mental model that never credits to intentional harm that can be fully explained by ignorance.
Applying Hanlon's razor, a useful tool for rapid decision-making and intelligent comprehension, in our day-to-day lives allows us to become less judgmental, and improve reasoning skills. Meanwhile, Hanlon's razor allows us to give people the benefit of the doubt, have more empathy and teaches us not to assume the worst intention in the actions of others, the value of which is most pronounced in relationships, business matters, and personal happiness.
We all lead complex lives where things are constantly going wrong. When this occurs, a common response is to blame the nearest person and assume they have bad intention. However, when someone messes up around us, we forget how many times we, too, have done the same. Instead, the perpetrator becomes a source of intense annoyance.
To assume intention in such a situation is likely to worsen the problem. None of us can ever know what someone else wants to happen. Inability or ignorance is far more likely to be the cause than the desire to hurt. When a situation causes us to become angry or upset, it can be valuable to consider if those emotions are justified. Often, the best way to react to other people causing us problems is by seeking to educate them, not to dismiss them. In this way, we can avoid repeats of the same situation.
28. How do people typically react to failures according to the text
A. Misplace blame on others. B. Shift current situations.
C. Face true ill intention. D. Seek trustworthy persons.
29. What does Hanlon's razor refer to
A. It identifies who is to blame. B. It avoids assuming harm by ignorance.
C. It is a device for router repair. D. It is an approach for colleague's fault.
30. What does the underlined word “perpetrator” in paragraph 4 mean
A. A blame sharer. B. An issue fixer. C. An error maker. D. A familiar person.
31. What will probably be discussed next in the text
A. How to control the bad emotions.
B. How to avoid reappearance of the same situation.
C. How to change the nervous relationship.
D. How to instruct others effectively.
D
Diets come and diets go. One of the most popular today is “intermittent fasting” in which, as the name suggests, the idea is to limit one's food intake to certain time windows. One popular variant, the“5-2 diet”, requires people to eat either very small amounts, or nothing at all, on two days a week, but places no restrictions on the other five.
As a weight-loss strategy, intermittent fasting has several things going for it. One is that it is uncomplicated. There is no need to weigh the ingredients of every meal, as some diets demand, nor to change what you eat completely. Limiting the restrictions to a couple of days a week, or several hours a day also requires less willpower, which might make it easier to stick with.
Working out whether that actually translates into greater weight loss than other diets is difficult. Most studies find limited data and mixed results. The general conclusion, says dietitian Nichola Ludlam-Raine, is that intermittent fasting seems to work roughly as well for weight loss as traditional calorie-counting does.
Intermittent fasting may offer other health benefits. Animal studies suggest that fasting can extend lifetime by up to 40%, slow aging, and improve metabolic(新陈代谢) health. Whether similar effects occur in humans is uncertain. While there may be potential benefits, human trials are not workable. “When we say calorie restriction, we mean nearly starving the animals,” notes Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher at the University of Surrey.
That leaves scientists reliant, for now, on smallish, short-lived studies. Dr Collins's team, for instance, has published a randomized-control trial suggesting that intermittent fasting improves the metabolism of fats more than ordinary dieting does. A review paper published in April 2024 looked at 23 other studies and concluded that intermittent fasting was slightly better than ordinary dieting for overweight people when it came to improving levels of cholesterol(胆固醇) and insulin(胰岛素).
There are also risks. A study in mice published in Nature in October 2024 found that severe fasting had downsides, including muscle mass loss and, possibly, weakened immune systems. Moderation, too, should be taken in moderation.
32. What is a feature of the“5-2 diet” in intermittent fasting
A. It needs continuous calorie-counting.
B. It restricts food intake for five days monthly.
C. It allows normal eating on most days of the week.
D. It demands strict food weighing on weekends.
33. Why is intermittent fasting gaining popularity
A. It combines with regular exercise.
B. It needs little willpower.
C. It promises rapid weight loss.
D. It requires no complex meal plans.
34. What is the purpose of writing paragraph 5
A. To compare contradictory studies.
B. To provide identical assumptions.
C. To add background information.
D. To present scientific evidence.
35. What is the author's attitude towards intermittent fasting
A. Critical. B. Positive. C. Doubtful. D. Cautious.

· Keep your audience in mind.
If you' re giving a presentation, consider the interests, differences, and anticipated levels of knowledge on the topic you' re speaking on. It may be helpful to remember the 5Cs of communication, which include clarity, conciseness, consistency, connection, and confidence.
· Maintain eye contact.
Eye contact builds harmony, helps convince others you' re trustworthy and shows interest. During a conversation or presentation, maintain eye contact for as long as it feels natural. Generally, you' ll want to aim for 2 to 4 seconds at a time. 39 If you' re addressing a boardroom, look each member in the eye. Ignoring any single person can easily be taken as a sign of offense.
· Practise active listening skills.
40 By actively listening, you can judge how much of your message is getting through your listeners and whether or not it's being received correctly. If your audience needs clarification, asking for feedback is often helpful.
A. Communication is a two-way street.
B. Remember to take in all of your audience.
C. This helps individuals feel personally valued.
D. Be sure to express clearly to avoid any kind of misunderstanding.
E. A good rule is to choose three main points to center your conversation around.

第二节(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Tyrus Wong arrived in San Francisco from China in 1920 as 56 11 year-old who loved calligraphy. By the end of the next decade, he was working for Disney, on his way to 57(become) one of America's greatest immigrant success stories. In his long and varied career, Wong developed a pioneering style, achieving brilliance in 58 (profession) such as painting, illustration, and even kite making. 59 the cornerstone of his legendary status remains his design work for the 1942 film Bambi. Inspired by the simplicities of Song dynasty landscapes, Wong’s influence on Bambi revealed, perhaps for the first time, 60 an animated feature film could rise to high art.
Karen Fang, author of Background Artist: The Life and Work of Tyrus Wong, the definitive new biography arriving next month, has been planning the book ever since Wong died in 2016, at the age of 106.
61 Fang describes vividly in the book, Wong “had this famous fine arts career before he went into commercial art.” Wong seemed 62 (draw) little distinction between the two, at least in terms of the artistry he brought 63 every project. Certainly he poured himself into his distinctive Christmas cards, which combined Western traditions with Eastern aesthetic minimalism. These cards, even more than Bambi, brought him true 64 (nation) fame for the first lime.
Wong's genius 65 (integrate) the simplicity of Chinese brushstrokes with the rhythm of California modernity. He channeled his optimism and talent to become, quietly, one of the greatest unsung American artists of the 20th century.

下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Sophia had always hated paintings. Maybe it was the way they just sat there, frozen in time, pretending to hold meaning. To her, paintings were dishonest. People acted as if they were windows into the artist's soul, but to her, they were just meaningless colors. What did a winding mess of blues and oranges really say A painting didn't breathe. It didn't feel. It was just there.
So when her best friend dragged her to the grand opening of the town's new art gallery, she refused but failed. “This is suffering,” Sophia said, arms crossed as she followed behind her friend.
The walls were lined with enormous paintings—— some abstract, some detailed, all equally dull in her eyes. Her friend, of course, was fully attracted. That was when Sophia noticed the old woman. She was standing upright before a large painting, her fingers resting lightly on the frame. Next to her was a younger man who was describing the artwork in an attentive voice.
“This one,” he was saying, “is a winter scene. A frozen river, two children playing near the bank. The brushwork is delicate……”
The old woman nodded, a gentle smile on her lips as she listened. But then, suddenly, the man's phone rang. “I have to take this, Eleanor. I' ll be back soon.” For a moment, the woman stood still, as if waiting for him to return. But in the shifting crowd, she took a small, uncertain step forward—— and ran straight into Sophia,
“OK, I'm so sorry, dear,” the woman said, steadying herself. “Uh, no, it's fine,” She hesitates” Are you blind ” The old woman smiled. “Yes, dear. Since I was twenty.” Sophia felt confused. “Then why are you here ” The woman laughed. “Because paintings aren't just for the eyes. They hold stories and emotions. I come to feel them, even if I can't see them.” She tilted (使倾斜) her head slightly, then added, “Would you mind helping me Just until my friend returns ”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在否题卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1: Sophia hesitated, but something about the woman made it difficult to refuse.
Paragraph 2: The old woman smiled, “If you could paint one thing that shows your heart, what would it be ”

第二节(满分25分)
Sophia hesitated, but something about the woman made it difficult to refuse. She took the old woman's arm gently and led her to the nearest painting. “This one has a lot of bright red and yellow,” Sophia began, her voice a bit uncertain at first. “The brushstrokes seem wild, like the artist was excited.” As she described each painting, she noticed the old woman's face light up. Eleanor reached out, her fingers brushing over the canvas, as if reading a book. Sophia found herself looking at the paintings differently. She realized that the colors weren't just random; they held the artist's feelings. By the time Eleanor's friend returned, Sophia was completely absorbed in the world of paintings she once hated.
The old woman smiled, “If you could paint one thing that shows your heart, what would it be ” Sophia paused, thinking deeply. Images of her family, her friends, and the moments that made her laugh or cry flashed through her mind. “I think... I’ d paint a sunset at the beach,” she said softly. “The warm oranges and pinks mixing with the cool blues of the ocean, and my friends laughing and running in the sand.” For the first time, she understood that paintings were a way to capture emotions, and to share a piece of one's soul. From that day on, Sophia's view of paintings changed forever. She no longer saw them as silent, meaningless objects but as windows to the heart.

W: That's good. ②What did you do during the bus journey
M:I read your book, of course. The latest in the series is amazing.
W: Well, it's lovely that you enjoyed it. Shall we pose for a photo, Fred
M: Yes, please.
W: Seeing young enthusiastic readers like you makes all the long lonely hours worthwhile.(16)
M: Oh, this has been the best day of my life.
W: Ha-ha! I think I'll include a character like you in my next story.
M: Wow! That's amazing!
W: Well, Fred, keep an eye out for my next story. There may be a young boy, with a big smile and a kind heart, full of energy like you, in it.
M: Thank you.

Text 10 因为暴雨提前放学
Attention, students! This is your head teacher speaking with an important announcement. The stormy skies have decided to show their anger and the wind is racing around, eager to make things difficult. Because of this wild weather, our school is closing early today.(18) Remember this isn't a holiday where you disappear into the sunset or rain! ③Standards must not drop.
At exactly 1:00 p. m., all students are to gather in the school hall, where our day will come to an early end. Year 7 students will leave first at 1:15 p. m. And then Year 8 students will leave 15 minutes later.(19) The rest of the year groups will follow one by one. The order will be Year 7, Year 8, Year 9and so on. Year 13 will leave last at 2:45 p. m.
Please remember, even though the school may take a break tomorrow to recover, you'll need to check your accounts for updates.(20) The clouds may make up their minds by morning, and we must be ready to respect them and respond. If you are not back in class, then your teachers will be on the screen to guide you through the day.
Take care and stay dry while the rain beats down on you!
