A mother of nine who started medical school when her youngest child was 4 years old graduated with her degree and plans to be a neurosurgeon (神经外科医生).
Sarah Merrill, now 41, said her journey to medical school began at age 17. She then met her husband and got married. Merrill first thought about going to school part-time to get a degree, but later she decided to follow her dream of attending medical school. Certainly, it was a challenge. Speaking of her successfully returning to university, Merrill thought it was credited to her family largely. “When I was accepted at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, we moved from Pennsylvania to Arizona,” said Merrill, who is moving to Indiana with her family to begin her residency (实习期) in neurosurgery. “In fact, they volunteered these movements. I know it was tough for all of us.”
Merrill and her children often have “homework parties” where they study for their own courses. Merrill’s choice has given a stimulus to her children. Merrill felt touched knowing her 11-year-old daughter wants to become a surgeon and overhearing her son tell his friends his mom’s going to be a cool brain surgeon, though he doesn’t understand that really.
Merrill’s next step into a neurosurgery residency will take her into a male-dominated field where only 5% of board certified neurosurgeons are women. Dr. Michele Halyard at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine said Merrill was known as a focused student. Halyard said, “If you can deal with nine children and keep your reason, the residency should be a piece of cake because no amount of stress will make you fail.”
Merrill had considered choosing a more family-friendly specialty, but, again, chose to dream big and follow her original pursuit. It’s the same advice she would give to all. “Set the goal that is what you’re really enthusiastic about, and it helps to think small. If you know what your priorities are, focus on the next step. Then you’ll get where you want to go.”
24.Why does Merrill speak of their movements
A.To show the support of her family.
B.To stress her determination to be a doctor.
C.To reflect difficulties in attending college.
D.To describe the process of pursuing her dream.
25.What does the underlined word “stimulus” mean in paragraph 3
A.Entertainment. B.Inspiration.
C.Commitment. D.Confusion.
26.What does Halyard mean in paragraph 4
A.Merrill will have more stress to handle.
B.Staying focused and sensible is key to success.
C.Being Mom makes Merrill a better doctor.
D.She is confident of Merrill’s being a neurosurgeon.
27.What does Merrill suggest at last
A.Starting with small things.
B.Getting your priorities right.
C.Being true to your passion.
D.Having the courage to dream big.
Do you want to know how to increase bone density (密度) and why it’s important We need strong bones to support us and allow us to move. They protect the brain, heart and other major organs from injury. We reach our “peak” bone mass in our late 20s, and we start to lose bone strength as we get older.
If you want to increase bone density, Vitamin C plays an essential role in the production of collagen, which in turn aids bone strength. “By contrast, lifestyle factors, such as stress, physical inactivity, high caffeine and alcohol intakes and smoking can contribute to impaired bone health,” says Hope, a nutrition consultant.
She adds: “Vitamin C is widely abundant in fruits and vegetables and consuming five portions of fruits and vegetables a day is enough to obtain the recommended 40mg per day. Vitamin C is water-soluble and therefore if high doses (剂量) are consumed as a supplement, the body will excrete the additional Vitamin C, which is not required.”
We all know that weight lifting is good for developing muscles, but did you know that it also helps increase bone density Studies have shown that lifting weights and strength training can aid new bone growth and maintain the existing bone structure. “Weight lifting is a brilliant lifestyle factor that can contribute to supporting long-term bone health as it encourages constant bone turnover. As a result, regular weight lifting can contribute to the development of new bone, which in turn allows the bones to get stronger,” says Hope.
Strength training can particularly benefit elderly women, a study found. The women undertook a strength-training program for 12 months and saw “significant increases” in their bone density in the spine and hips — areas commonly affected by osteoporosis (骨质疏松).
28.What does the author intend to do in paragraph 1
A.Introduce a topic. B.Give us a warning.
C.Provide some advice. D.Put forward a question.
29.What does the underlined word “excrete” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Take in. B.Pass on. C.Get rid of. D.Make up for.
30.What can weight lifting do according to Hope
A.Change bone structure. B.Help cure osteoporosis.
C.Allow muscles to turn over. D.Encourage bones to grow.
31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.What to eat at an old age
B.How to increase bone density
C.Why bone density is important
D.What we should do to keep healthy
You can’t always predict a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. But designer Mikhail Belyaev doesn’t think that forgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should result in you getting wet. That’s why he created lampbrella, a lamp post with its own rain sensing umbrella.
The designer says he come up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia. “Once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be appropriate to have a canopy (伞蓬) built into a street lamp.” he said.
The lampbrella is a standard-looking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella on demand. Sensors (传感器) then ensure that the umbrella offers pedestrians shelter whenever it starts raining.
In addition to the rain sensor, there’s also a 360° motion sensor on the fiberglass street lamp which detects whether anyone’s using the lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed.
According to the designer, the lampbrella would move at a relatively low speed, so as not to cause harm to the pedestrians. Besides, it would be grounded to protect from possible lightning strike. Each lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people. Being installed at 2 meters off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians.
While there are no plans to take lampbrella into production, Belyaev says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow Department, and insists this creation could be installed on any street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter.
32.Belyaev created the lampbrella aiming to _______.
A.predict a heavy rain B.help people avoid getting wet in the rain
C.check the weather forecast D.remind people to take an umbrella
33.How does the lampbrella work
A.Electric motor can open or close the sensors on demand.
B.Electric motor is controlled by the rain sensor to open the canopy.
C.Sensors offer pedestrians shelter whenever it starts raining.
D.Sensors can work only three minutes.
34.What does paragraph 5 mainly tell us about the lampbrella
A.Its moving speed. B.Its appearance.
C.Its installation. D.Its safey.
35.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.The designer is confident that his creation is practical.
B.The designer will open a company in Moscow.
C.The lampbrella could be put into immediate production.
D.The lampbrella would be put on show in Moscow.
Lifelong Learning is Good for You
It is impossible for everyone to have access to additional formal education. Fortunately, many educational resources have made it easier for people to develop a habit of lifelong learning. 36 The following points are reasons why you should stick to lifelong learning.
37 In 2015 some researchers found people with a bachelor’s degree can earn much more than those just with a high school degree. In 2014 a report said that 50% of jobs would become unnecessary by 2025 due to technological development. New technology changes the nature of work and we need continuous learning and personal growth to adapt ourselves to the changes.
Open-mindedness and curiosity are beneficial to your career. People who enjoy learning are more active at work than those who don’t. Now think of the most admirable colleagues you know. Do they tend to be knowledgeable about almost any topic of interest Do they make insightful speeches on the topics they know best 38 Those you admire most are those who seem most devoted to learning and personal growth.
Our ability to learn is a keystone of human motivation. Have you ever sat in a quiet place and finished a great novel Do you remember the feeling of accomplishment when you solve a challenging task Have you managed to conduct difficult experiments or create something new Education may not always have influence on wealth, health or career. 39
There are many reasons why we should continue learning. Lifelong learning isn’t just an economic necessity but a physical, emotional, and social one. 40 Once you catch them, you will get one of the most rewarding things in your life.
A.Educational level influences your work performance.
B.For example, books, online courses, MOOCs and so on are available.
C.Catch the chance of lifelong learning, and you’ll be successful.
D.We live in an age full of opportunities for learning.
E.Educational input determines your competitiveness.
F.But it would obviously contribute to the special qualities and uniqueness of each one.
G.Do they seem open-minded and intellectually energetic

We all know that forgiving yourself and others can bring you peace of mind. Recently, a new study published in the journal Psychology and Health 56 (find) that forgiveness may help you sleep well, too. Researchers led by Luther College psychology professor Loren Toussaint surveyed nearly 1,500 American adults to rate how likely they were 57 (forgive) both themselves for their own mistakes and others for hurting them. Then the participants were asked quite a few questions over their sleep quality, life 58 (satisfy), and overall physical health. Their findings show that people who were forgiving slept much 59 (well) at night, and, in turn, were happier and healthier than those who went to bed 60 anger.
The results led the researchers to conclude that forgiveness of others and self-forgiveness may help create a 61 (relax) mental state that supports sound sleep, 62 is connected with better health. Of course, forgiving yourself or someone else isn’t always easy. According to Karen Swartz, a doctor of the Johns Hopkins Hospital, it is about more than just 63 (say) the words.
“It is an active process in which you make a decision to let go of negative feelings 64 the person deserves it or not,” Swartz explains.

One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more way for her to solve my strange problem—inability (没能力)to read.
In the library, I found my way into the “Children’s Room”. I pulled a few books off the shelf and sat down on the floor. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of dog. I had recently had a dog, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. He was the one I could share secrets with, but later he was given away to someone who had space and money to care for him. I never forgot my dog.
On the book’s cover, there was a dog which looked the same as mine. I figured the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the little, Amos, the Dog with a Plan. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for the summer.
Under the shade of a bush, I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty and got the main ides of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. At the end of the story, my mind continued the final scene of reunion. When I finished my reading, a stream of tears ran down my cheeks. It was until then that I realized I had begun to overcome my inability to read. Thus, this was the very first book for me which I had read through and deeply immersed myself in the real scene.

Once again, we’re holding our popular photography competition for children. It’s open to all children between eight and twelve, who have an interest in photography. We’re not looking for special technical skills, just the imagination to take a good picture. Last year, the topic for our competition was wildlife and we received many excellent photos. This year would like your photos to be on the subject of the sea. This is the only requirement. It doesn’t matter whether your photo is in color or black and white. The size of the photos was limited to 17 centimeters long and 12 centimeters wide last year, but there’s no limit on that this year. A team of professional photographers will judge the photos, and they’ll choose the four that they think show the most promise. The winner will receive a camera, while the second prize will be free photography lessons. Those in third and fourth place will receive a photography book. If you’re interested, we’d like you to post your photos to us here at star radio 24 Woodstock Square, London. Your photos need to reach us by the 10th of August, so you have a few weeks before the closing date. The results of the competition will be announced on this program on the 15th. There will be a chance to see all the photographs into the competition at an exhibition at the museum. This will start on the 20th of August and stay open until 27th.

66.Dear Jim,
Glad to hear you’re preparing a speech on wildlife protection. Here’s some information.
Currently, many wild animals are endangered due to habitat loss, illegal hunting, and climate change. For example, species like tigers and elephants face rapid population decline. Urgent action is needed!
To protect them, governments should strengthen laws against poaching and expand nature reserves. Additionally, raising public awareness through education is vital. Everyone can help by supporting eco-friendly organizations or avoiding products from illegal wildlife trade.
Hope this helps! Good luck with your speech!
Yours,
Li Hua
67.Para 1:
My mother’s call brought me back to the real world and I suddenly realized something. Books could be incredibly wonderful and I was going to read them. From then on, I kept going to the library. In the library, I was exposed to different types of books: detective stories, love stories, poems and so on. My mother encouraged me to spend time doing my favorite thing. Day by day, I finally succeeded in overcoming my inability to read. Moreover, I began to write some stories. When I went to university, I chose literature as my major.
Para 2:
Last year, my mother was so proud that her son was awarded a PhD in literature. I never told my mother about my experience that summer. It was the very first book that made me who I am today. This year, I begin writing my first book on the topic of my dog. I hope writing could be my lifelong career.
