It’s the time of year when package thefts are on the rise, but when a delivery driver tried to drop off a package at a home in Rogers, a very good dog wanted to make sure that he didn’t leave anything behind.
“The FedEx driver dropped off the package, and Nixon ran up and grabbed it and ran it back to the driver,” said Megan Sand, the owner of the dog. She was at work when it happened, but the whole interaction was caught on her doorbell’s camera.
The video showed the playful dog grabbed the package between his teeth seconds after the driver left it at Sand’s doorstep, and then ran down the driveway with his tail wagging. The driver laughed when he saw Nixon dutifully bringing back the item.
Nixon is popular with the regular delivery drivers in the area. When drivers park their trucks at the end of the driveway, he’ll walk with them to the front door.
“Nixon loves to relax but is also incredibly friendly. The garbage men know him, and they often stop to give him treats,” said Sand.
Sand said Nixon becomes very excited when anyone comes to the house and is particularly fond of delivery people, who all know Nixon and give him treats.
Though Sand isn’t usually one to post much on social media, this one was too good not to share. “I’ve never seen that, and it just made me laugh. I just kind of wanted to share that laughter with everyone and hopefully someone, or hopefully a lot of people found it funny and just made their day. And I’m sure it made the FedEx driver’s day,” Sand told CBS Minnesota.
4. What happened to the FedEx driver
A. He lost Sand’s package. B. He sent a wrong package.
C. He got a delivered package back. D. He reached a wrong address.

A Worried. B. Confused.
C. Amused. D. Frightened.
6. What do we know about Nixon according to the text
A. He likes playing with packages.
B. He isn’t friendly to the garbage men.
C. He met the FedEx driver for the first time.
D. He gets along well with the delivery people.
7. Why did Sand post the event on social media
A. To express her thanks. B. To share the happiness.
C. To make Nixon well-known. D. To complain about the driver.

Swimming is a great exercise for staying healthy. But it can also be a life saving skill and help to keep you from drowning. However, in some bodies of water, swimming might be difficult. On today’s show, we talk about several English expressions that use “swim” to describe different ways to face a situation—especially danger, difficulty, or any hardship.
Let’s start with swimming in rivers. Let’s say you jump in a river and swim downstream. That means you are swimming with the current of the water. This makes swimming easier and faster. So, the expression to swim downstream means using the easy way to get something done.
However, when you swim upstream, you have to fight the flow of the water. In some rivers or other bodies of water, swimming upstream is nearly impossible. As an expression, swimming upstream means you take a more difficult path to do something. You make it harder for yourself. Here’s an example: Dealing with money is not my strong suit. In fact, last year I was drowning in debt. Every month when bills arrived, I felt like I was swimming upstream. So I went to a financial advisor.
Now, if you are swimming in the ocean, sea, or other large bodies of water, you may be fighting the tide. Swimming against the tide is another expression. It means you are fighting against very powerful forces. And chances are you will not come out the winner. Swimming with the tide or current, is much easier. Again, this means you have taken an easier path.
All of these expressions can be used another way. They can also mean that you are going with or against popular opinions or viewpoints. If you are swimming with the tide or current or swimming downstream, you act the same way as the majority of others. You are going with the flow. That is another common expression—to go with the flow. People who go with the flow are easy-going. They take the popular path without protest.
8. What is the author
A Host. B. Writer. C. Teacher. D. Linguist.
9. Why does the author give an example in paragraph 3
A. To teach readers how to deal with bills.
B. To describe the feeling of “swim upstream”.
C. To explain the meaning of “swim upstream”.
D. To show the difficulty of handling financial issues.
10. Which can NOT describe a man who always agrees with the majority
A. Swim upstream. B. Go with the flow.
C. Swim downstream. D. Swim with the current.
11. What will be discussed in the following paragraph
A. Importance of the word “swim”.
B. Examples of the use of “swim” in different occasions.
C. Errors people make while using expressions about “swim”.
D. Explanation of “swimming upstream/against the tide (current)”.
D
A “superhero” moss can significantly reduce the risk and severity of flooding for communities living in downstream areas, researchers have found.
Scientists from the conservation group Moors for the Future Partnership who conducted a six-year study into sphagnum moss (泥炭藓) found that the sphagnum moss planted in upland areas reduced peak stream flow — the maximum amount of water that enters a river after a storm — by 65%. The moss was also found to increase lag time — the time taken between rainfall and the rainwater entering the river system — by 680%.
More than 50,000 individual sphagnum plants were planted on Kinder Scout, the highest point in the Peak District National Park, as part of an “outdoor laboratory” for researchers to observe.
Before the moss was planted on Kinder, the hill surface consisted of bare peat, which meant that after a storm rainwater would wash straight off, leaving communities in downstream valleys more vulnerable (易受攻击的) to flooding.
The planting of sphagnum moss could therefore bring important ecological benefits. The plant is capable of absorbing up to 20 times its own weight in water, which means that more rainwater can be held upstream and enter a river catchment (流域) more gradually to prevent it from being flooded. Sphagnum moss can also help protect the layers (层) of peat underneath it, and can build up over time to create new layers of peat which are essential to carbon storage.
Researchers say the benefits of planting sphagnum moss will be intensified over time as the plant grows, and that moss planting has the potential to bring global benefits in terms of the climate, water quality and flood severity.
Tom Spencer, a research and monitoring officer for the Moors for the Future Partnership, said the results were “shocking” and applauded the dramatic effects the moss has had on the river catchment. He said sphagnum planting could be “a powerful tool in minimizing the risk and severity of flooding”, which would have “far-reaching benefits for r communities downstream”.
12. How was the research conducted
A. By referring to the existing database.
B. By observing the changes in the upland.
C. By doing experiments in real-life situations.
D. By comparing the latest research with previous ones.
13. Which may NOT be the benefit brought by Sphagnum Moss
A. Improving the water quality.
B. Indirectly helping with carbon storage.
C. Stopping rainwater from entering the river system.
D. Reducing the risk of flooding for downstream areas.
14. What’s Tom Spencer’s attitude towards Sphagnum moss
A. Critical. B. Unclear. C. Indifferent. D. Supportive.
15. Which is the best title of this passage
A. “Superhero” moss’ far-reaching benefits
B. Sphagnum moss’ newly-found advantages
C. “Superhero” moss can save communities from flooding
D. Sphagnum moss together with peat is perfect for flood prevention

I loved exploring forests, observing plants, and listening to the chirping of birds with Jimmy, my little brother. Mom was always there with her camera, capturing each wonderful moment. These photos were arranged in an album. It held the sweet memories of my family, and I was never bored with opening it, as it always filled me with warmth. Life was simple until I asked for a new electronic game for my birthday. I was well-behaved, so my parents fulfilled my wish. But then everything changed.
The game was so amazing. As soon as I switched on the device, my ears stopped hearing external sounds. My back ached, but I couldn’t stop.
“Davey wanna go out and play ” asked Jimmy, holding the ball.
“No, thanks,” I refused, without a second thought.
“But all our friends are waiting! You’ve been staying here every day playing that game,” Jimmy urged. I finally tore my eyes away, my voice sharp. “Can’t you see I’m busy Go play without me!” With that, Jimmy stormed out, his face reddened with anger.
Outside in the forest, the kids played ball and hide-and-seek, having loads of fun, while I spent the whole afternoon in the sofa, absorbed in the game until it was dark. It was days before I realized I hadn’t seen Jimmy around.
Each day brought a fresh battle. I resisted, but finally gave in. My fingers danced across the buttons as hours slipped by. Around 9 PM, Mom came and placed a glass of milk beside me.“Time for bed,” she whispered. I saw her worries — how could I not But click-clack noise covered Mom’s voice. When the final boss fell, my eyes burned. Walking half-asleep towards the bed, I noticed a photo album on the bedside table. The worn cover brought back memories.

46 Green Life: Let’s Take Action!
Dear fellow students,
Our planet is facing serious environmental problems. To promote a sustainable life the Student Union is launching a campaign called “Green Life: Let’s Take Action!”.
Here is what we can do to live a green life. Firstly, we should turn off lights, shut off taps and unplug devices immediately when they are not in use. Secondly, we can separate waste paper, plastic, and metal for proper recycling. Thirdly, choose eco-friendly transportation means such as walking, cycling, or taking buses. Fourthly, we should use reusable bottles, bags, and containers instead of single-use plastic ones. Last but not least, let’s plant more trees and recycle waste things appropriately.
Let’s make our school and community cleaner and greener together. Let’s take an active part in the campaign from now on because our earth needs our care!

47 Absorbed in the photos, I didn’t notice Mom standing beside me. She bent down and joined me. Pointing at a photo of Jimmy and me in the forest, both covered in mud, she whispered, “Remember how happy you were out there ” Guilt washed over me as I realized how much I missed those days with Jimmy. That night, I lay awake, thinking about everything I’d passed by while glued to the screen. I made a decision.
Early next morning, ball in hand, I knocked on Jimmy’s door. His sleepy eyes widened in surprise. “Want to play outside ” I asked. Jimmy nodded happily. We rushed to the woods, laughter echoing among the trees; we played ball in the open field, shouts mixing with bird chirps; we lay flat on the grass, clouds painting our dreams with ease. I suddenly felt a recovered sense of peace, a feeling brought not by the silly screen, but the company of loved ones.
