At the very moment, two young men,Troy May and Layton Allen, came over to see what was
going on.When they saw Bannister on the ground in great pain, they made an offer:They could
carry the injured woman to the bottom of the path.
“I knew I was capable of carrying her down,”says May,then 20. “T really didn't make much
of a decision;I just knew I needed to carry her down if I could.”
May eased Bannister onto his back and started hiking downward. He carried her for most of
the nearly three-hour journey, and Allen carried her for the rest.
During the long hike down, her rescuers shared stories and asked Bannister about her own
life to take her mind off the mounting pain.
Once they reached the parking lot,Allen drove Bannister to the Tacoma General Hospital,
about two hours away, and May followed them in his car.At the hospital,Bannister learned that
she had broken her leg in three places.Bannister said that doctors told her the damage likely

Most students do an IQ test early in their school career. Even if they never see their results,
they feel that their IQ is what determines how well they are going to do in life. When they see
other students doing better than them, they usually believe that those students have a higher IQ
and that there is nothing they can do to change facts. However, new research into EQ suggests
that success is not simply the result of a high IQ.
While your IQ tells you how intelligent you are, your EQ tells you how well you use your
intelligence. Professor Salovey suggests that when predicting someone’s future success, their EQ
might actually matter more than their IQ. For example, have you ever wondered why some of
the smartest students in your class, who you think deserve good grades, sometimes end up
failing exams Perhaps their failure is because of their low EQ.
It is generally believed that people with high EQs are open to new ideas and have positive
attitudes towards life. They are also less likely to be troubled by problems. On the other hand,
there is little doubt that people with low EQs often have problems getting on with other people
and dealing with difficult situations; thus they have a harder time surviving in life.
The good news is that most social scientists agree that EQ has a lot to do with education.
Compared with IQ that seems to be fixed the moment you were born, EQ could be improved
with right approaches. Some are trying to study the possibility of improving a person’s EQ,
especially when it comes to“people’s skills”, such as understanding and communication.
To get ahead in the world and lead a happy successful life means getting on with other
people and being able to understand and react to situations in the best way. This requires a high
EQ—the higher the better.
28.Most students think others’ better performance in studies is due to_____.
A.high IQ B.teachers’ assistance C.good luck D.hard work
29.What can we infer form paragraph 2
A.Only EQ determines someone’s future success.
B.EQ plays a more important role in one’s future success.
C.Some smartest students fail exams because of their low IQ.
D.The most intelligent students deserve good grades.
30.What will people with a high EQ tend to do
A.Refuse new ideas. B.Be troubled by problems.
C.Have a negative attitude. D.Get along well with others.
31.What contributes to a higher EQ according to most social scientists
A.Education. B.Parents. C.Friends. D.Environment.

Plastic is man-made and can be produced from natural materials like coal and oil. Plastic is
really useful and we use it every day. But what happens after we throw it away is causing a big
problem for our planet. It’s thought that more than five trillion pieces of plastic are in the world’
s oceans and it can take years for them to break down.
Why is plastic a problem The problem with plastic is that most of it isn’t biodegradable(可
生物降解的). It doesn’t rot, like paper or food, so instead it can exist for hundreds of years.
Each year, 400 million tons of plastic is produced and 40% of that is single-use plastic, such as
carrier bags, drinks bottles and crisp packets. More than 8 million tons of plastic enters the
world’s oceans each year. It can be blown into the sea from ships and beaches, or carried there
by river. Some also gets flushed(冲走) down the toilet.
Another issue is that not all plastic can be recycled. This might be because of the way it is
made up or because it is too expensive or difficult to do. Some coffee cups, for example, have a
waterproof plastic lining which can make them difficult to recycle. Every day seven million
cardboard coffee cups are thrown away but only one in 400 are recycled.
How does plastic harm animals Experts think that by 2050, the amount of plastic in the
ocean will weigh more than the number of fish in the ocean. All animals, whether they live on
land or in the sea, can be impaired by plastic. They can get trapped in bigger items such as
carrier bags or food packaging.
Birds, fish and shellfish can mistake plastic for food when it has broken down into smaller
pieces. One in three sea turtles, and around 90% of seabirds, have eaten it. They can’t digest(消
化) plastic so their stomachs can become full, meaning they don’t have room for actual food.
Each year, 100,000 animals in the sea are killed by plastic.
32.What is the function of the first paragraph
A.To attract readers. B.To define the main concept.
C.To lead in the main topic. D.To summarize the passage.
33.How did the author support his idea in second and third paragraphs
A.By using data. B.By describing the processes.
C.By explaining definitions. D.By making comparisons.
34.What does the underlined word “impaired” mean in the fourth paragraph
A.Helped. B.Hurt. C.Scared. D.Ignored.
35.What might be discussed in the next paragraph
A.Environmental damage caused by plastic. B.The importance of animal protection.
C.Reasons for upgrading plastic material. D.Ways to solve the plastic problem.
第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)

If sports are something that interests you, obviously you would want to be good at them.
Succeeding at a sport takes skill, and skill takes patience and determination. 36 Skill alone may
take you far, but you'll never go all the way unless you have the right attitude and team spirit to back it
up.
Begin from basics first.
It's common that young athletes want to jump into the advanced skills quickly. This isn't an
effective way to spend training time, If you're new to a sport, take as much time as you need to get the
basic movements down properly. 37
Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet.
Everyone should make a point of eating a diet that benefits their body, This is especially true if you
want to be great at sports. 38 Base your diet on vegetables, leafy greens, lean proteins, and
whole grains.
Set great goals for yourself.
This does not mean being unrealistic, or saying you’re going to go professional within a year. 39
Give yourself a suitable amount of time to achieve that goal, and break it down into smaller parts if the
goal is especially big.
40
Being good at sports means more than physical strength and speed. In order to be truly
great, you need to apply positive attitude to the way you treat other players, even if they're on the other
team. If you lose a match, accept the loss and show respect to the other player for their victory.
A. Let yourself have fun.
B. Show good sportsmanship.
C. However, there are other things you need to think about.
D. It will make advanced skills a lot easier to grasp in the long run.
E. Eating junk food will work against whatever efforts you make in the gym.
F. If you stop practicing, chances are that someone more determined will beat you.
G.Instead, you should take a look at what you are, and figure out where you'd like to be.

Willie’s 11th birthday was coming. His aunt sent him a birthday present—a small nice
notebook. There was a place in it for a pencil. Willie valued it a lot and always kept it in his
pocket. When he found something interesting, he would write it down in the book.
One afternoon, after Willie came back from school, he called his best friend, Caper, a
well-trained shepherd dog and said, “Come, Caper! Let’s go out and have fun.” They went to
the pasture field (牧场) to catch the butterflies and there they found a shaft (通风井), which
seemed to be deserted for a long time. Willie sat down on the edge of the shaft, bending over to
see how deep it was. Suddenly, he lost his balance and fell in. “Help! Help!” Willie called
desperately. But no response at all. He was so far away from the house. He made several
attempts to climb up the shaft but again he failed! Now Willie was exhausted and frustrated.
When Caper saw his master falling into the shaft, the little good companion ran round and
round, reaching down and trying to pull him out. Unfortunately, a piece of rock gave way under
his feet, and he fell in the shaft too!
It was getting dark. When Willie’s mother, Mrs. Lee came back from work and found there
was no one at home, she was anxious and worried. Without any clue at home, she decided to
look for Willie outside. She went to all the trees under which Willie was in the habit of playing,
but he was nowhere to be found. By this time, the sun had gone down. A feeling of panic took
hold of Mrs. Lee. She comforted herself that Willie might have come back. She rushed back,
hoping to find her son at home.

第一节
Dear Tom,
Glad to hear you’ll visit China! I’d like to recommend Guilin, a city famous for its amazing
natural beauty. Located in southern China, Guilin is well-known for its unique karst mountains,
clear Li River, and beautiful countryside views.
I recommend it because the scenery there is like a traditional Chinese ink painting. You
can take a bamboo raft on the river or ride a bike around the mountains. It’s a perfect place to
relax and experience Chinese nature.
Welcome to China! Hope you’ll have a wonderful trip!
Best wishes,
Li Hua 第二节
She found Caper sitting in front of the door, with a notebook in his mouth. ““Why are you here,
Caper ” Mrs. Lee swelled with confusion and couldn’t help asking more. Suddenly, the dog-ear
in the notebook attracted her attention. She took the notebook and quickly opened it, only to
find a message from Willie, which said, “Mum, come to me! I am in a shaft in the pasture.”
“Caper, can you take me to find your little master ” asked Mrs. Lee anxiously. The honest
friend wagged his tail, seeming to understand her words. He turned around and ran forward
fast. Mrs. Lee followed him to the far corner of the pasture and there was Willie, alive and well,
in the shaft. How glad he was when his mother caught him in her arms and lifted him out!
Willie told Mum how he came up with the idea after he was success fully rescued. After he and
Caper both fell into the shaft, he tried to calm himself down and think of how to get out. A good
idea occurred to him when he touched the notebook in his pocket. He took it out, wrote down
the message, dog-eared the page and said to Caper, “Caper, I will help you out! Remember you
have to go home and give the notebook to Mum!” Then he bent down, lifted the dog up with all
his strength, raised himself upon tiptoe and helped him out. Having heard this, Mrs. Lee gave
the clever boy a warm hug, praising, “Well done, Willie!”
