Waste sorting is a simple process that requires neither a lot of time nor any special resources. When you
throw away trash (废 物 ), do you know which bin it should go in Have you ever n 1 the
differently-colored trash bins on the street or in your neighborhood
Some of you might not be able to answer this question easily. In fact, it is very important. Not knowing
how to sort waste can make it even h 2 to save energy and protect the environment.
If you don’t sort your trash, all of it will go to a landfill (垃圾填埋场) and be m 3 together. These
landfills can take up large areas of ground that could have been used for planting trees or crops. The electronic
waste can pollute the soil and groundwater (地下水). Other pieces of garbage, like the metal part of a pen, can be
used to make other things if they are properly recycled.
With this in mind, many cities in China have been running waste-sorting activities in recent years. For
example, Shanghai announced in July 2019 that within three years, all of its residents should sort their waste into f
4 groups: wet, recyclable, harmful and dry.
Many other c 5 , including Shenzhen and Qingdao, plan to use this method to sort their waste.
Now that you know this, perhaps you can do your part to protect the environment and encourage others to sort
their trash.
Waste sorting is also a major problem around the world. Different countries are using different methods to
sort their trash. Japan is l 6 the world in waste sorting. It is a very important part of Japanese life and
Japanese people will expect foreigners to follow their belief.

Think of echo chambers as invisible rooms on the Internet where everyone a 2 with your idea.
Think about how people used to sit around a fire, telling stories that made everyone else all nod and smile. Now,
we have the Internet where people from around the world share thoughts that make us nod and smile.
Social media platforms are so smart that they even know what we like. They use special t 3 called

L 7 , there are ways for us to escape the echo chambers. Start by trying new websites, read various

Get Ready to Enter the World of Dreams
Everybody has dreams. They can be funny, frightening, exciting or weird. Read the passage and find out
more about the world of dreams.
● What are dreams
Dreams are stories or a series of events that take place in a person’s mind while they are a 1 .
Sometimes they are based on everyday experiences and seem very real. Sometimes they are weird and confusing.
Experts think you dream around four to six t 2 a night even if you can’t remember most of them in the
morning. Scientists don’t really know for sure why we do it. One theory is that sleep is a chance for the brain to
process thoughts and feelings — keeping i 3 things in memories and getting rid of the unnecessary
ones. Another theory says dreams can help you see things from different points of view and could even help you
solve problems.
● How do we dream
There are two main phases (阶段) of sleep. They are rapid (快速的) eye movement (REM) and non-rapid
eye movement. You can dream in e 4 phase but it’s most likely to be during the REM phase, which
happens about 90 minutes after you go to sleep.
● What is a 5 for a good night’s sleep
It is a good idea to go to sleep at about the same time each night. It is also necessary to calm down yourself
b 6 sleeping. This could be by reading or listening to relaxing music. Try to avoid bright lights and
screens, such as phones, tablets or TVs. Make sure the room is not too hot or cold, and if you find you are
worrying about something, have a notepad by the bed. You can write down your worry, close the pad and put the
thought out of your mind, then deal with it the n 7 day. You could also write down your dreams when
you wake up if you can remember them.

lifetime. It’s time we did something about this problem.
Another reason is that social media makes it much e 3 to be a bully. Bullies today don't have to
face the person they’re bullying. They can just post a hurtful comment or an embarrassing photo on Weibo or in a
WeChat group chat. Everyone in the class, or even the whole school, will see it. Some may even join in with their
own unkind comments to “mob (围攻) ” the victim.
The bully and the “mob” may think it’s fun. However, their actions can d 4 the life of the victim.
They can cause depression and anxiety (焦虑). This shouldn’t happen and it doesn’t have to happen. And you can
actually stop it.
If you see someone being bullied in your school, or anywhere. don’t be q 5 . Don’t just say to
yourself. “It’s not my problem.” If you’re too shy to face the bully yourself, then you should at least be brave
enough to report the incident to a teacher as soon as possible. And you should also be willing to stand up for the
victim even when others do not.
Last but not least, we should try our best to p 6 school bullying from happening. Perhaps schools
can pay more a 7 to students’ mental health since scientists have found bullies are nearly twice as likely
to have mental health problems.
I’d like to call on all schools and families to sit up and take notice of school bullying. I sincerely hope all
students can have a happy school life.
Many young people want to become pop-stars. It is their great ambition in life. They think: pop-stars make
a lot if money; they lead i 1 and exciting lives; thousands of fans adore them; they become famous.
Yes, but first they must become stars. Most performers start life with a group. This is the patterns nowadays.
But there are many groups and competition is stiff. Groups appear and d 2 almost overnight. O 3
a small number stay. Almost without exception they have to work very hard before they reach the top.
But very few r 4 the top and stay there. In England there are perhaps thirty or so groups at the top.
Most of these do not earn so much money; perhaps $400 each time they perform. What is more, they have quite a
lot of expenses. They have to pay a manager, for example. He is the key person in their lives and he t 5
about 20% if their earnings perhaps more. Then there are their clothes, their instruments and their van. Sometimes
they are still paying for the last two items.
And don’t forget: they have to travel a great deal, sometimes 2,000 miles in one week. At times they even
sleep in their van instead of a h 6 , just to save money.

“WHEN I was your age, …”
“Back in my day, …”
Are you t 1 of hearing such sentences Those of the older generations, you know, always like to
tell us how lucky we are. Today, we have the internet, smartphones, a good education, among other things. When
they were young, they “weren’t so lucky.” Their lives were “much, much poorer.”
Perhaps every generation is familiar with this. As time goes by, it s 2 the generation that has
already grown up cannot help but be jealous of the succeeding (随后出现的) generation.
I’m a millennial. My generation (Generation Y) was born between 1980 and 1995. When I was young, the
internet moved at a snail’s pace. Cellphones (not smartphones) were all black and white. Food always came from
the kitchen. Yet, every time my parents caught me playing computer games, they told me to pay more attention to
study. So they said, be “doing something more r 3 for your life such as study harder and be more
well-organized.” But little did they know that only a decade later, some people could make a living by playing
video games.
You are most likely members of Generation Z (born between 1995 and 2010). Most of you have been
growing up in even b 4 conditions. You have been r 5 an education of better quality. You have
also been exposed (使接触) to many new technologies. The recent Bilibili video Rising Waves motivates all
members of new generations. A 6 the tone (口吻) is perhaps overly positive, the message is clear. We

He continued, “We will be able to watch the Earth get smaller and smaller, and the moon get larger and
larger. We will be out of this world.”
It’s not known how much they might spend. However, Tito would not discuss the cost of his space trip

Ten years ago, I set out to study luck. I wanted to know why some people are always in the right place at

Many people volunteered for my research. Over the years I interviewed them, watched their lives and had
them take part in my experiments.
I carried out a simple experiment to discover why there were d 2 in their ability to catch chances.
I gave both lucky and unlucky people a newspaper and asked them to look through it and tell me how many

This message took up h 4 of the page and was more than two inches high. It was staring at

Lucky people tend to be more r 6 and open. They can see everything that is in front of them,

My research shows that lucky people live by several rules. Here are some of these rules:
*Be open to new experiences and b 7 your old thought patterns (模式).

*See yourself being lucky before an important meeting or phone call.
*Spend a few moments each day remember things that went well.

E-waste (电子垃圾) is fast becoming a serious problem around the world. This report will examine this
problem and provide some p 1 ways to solve it.
We live in a society that is producing and using electronics (电子产品) all the time. It is often cheaper to
buy new products than to repair old ones. Also, through clever advertising, companies always e 2 people
to change their old TVs, mobile phones and computers for the latest models. E-waste is created when we throw
away old ones. In Europe a 3 , about 8,700,000 tons of e-waste is produced each year. Sadly, just over
1,000,000 tons is recycled.
Burying e-waste or burning it cause serious problems for the environment. Electronics have dangerous
things in them. These things can then get into the g 4 or pollute the air when they are burnt.
In recent years, however, their plans are not always deal with properly. Sometimes electronics are just sent
to poor countries such as Ghana. Here they are often burnt in public areas, which is very bad for people’s health.
Setting up recycling centers is a good way to solve this problem. E-cycling centers could recycle the parts that can
be reused and deal with the r 5 properly.
Another way is to make producers responsible for their used products. This means that producers must take
back old products which are no longer w 6 . They should then make sure they are recycled or reused in a
right way.
As for us, we should try to cut down on e-waste. Change electronics only when we have to. And don’t buy
a product just to have the latest model.
E-waste is a serious problem in the m 7 world. Both producers and users must take actions and
try to keep it to the smallest amount.

Waste sorting is also a major problem around the world. Different countries are using different methods to
sort their trash. Japan is l 6 the world in waste sorting. It is a very important part of Japanese life and
Japanese people will expect foreigners to follow their belief.

The anti-bullying film Better Days deepened my understanding of school bullying (校园霸凌) . I used to
think school bullying was far from us, but that is not the case. We are seeing an i 1 in school bullying all
over the world. These unfortunate incidents are causing harm to many young people.
Many teenagers suffer from school bullying. The reason why we don’t know about their suffering is that
many of them don’t dare to speak out about their experiences. Some do speak out, but no one around them is
willing to help them got t 2 their tough days. The effect of school bullying on the victim can last a
I sincerely hope all

study. So they said, be “doing something more r 3 for your life such as study harder and be more
well-organized.” But little did they know that only a decade later, some people could make a living by playing
video games.
You are most likely members of Generation Z (born between 1995 and 2010). Most of you have been

Ten years ago, I set out to study luck. I wanted to know why some people are always in the right place at
the right time, while o 1 always experience ill luck.
Many people volunteered for my research. Over the years I interviewed them, watched their lives and had
them take part in my experiments.
I carried out a simple experiment to discover why there were d 2 in their ability to catch chances.
I gave both lucky and unlucky people a newspaper and asked them to look through it and tell me how many
photographs were i 3 .
I had secretly placed a large message halfway through the newspaper saying, “Tell the researcher you have
seen this and win$50.”
This message took up h 4 of the page and was more than two inches high. It was staring at
everyone straight in the face, but unlucky people tended to miss it and lucky people tended to catch it.
Unlucky people are just more nervous than lucky people. They are busy looking only for what they need
and this s 5 them from noticing the unexpected. So they miss out on chances.
Lucky people tend to be more r 6 and open. They can see everything that is in front of them,
rather than just what they are looking for.
My research shows that lucky people live by several rules. Here are some of these rules:
*Be open to new experiences and b 7 your old thought patterns (模式).
*Listen to your gut instincts (直觉)—they are often right.
