一、阅读理解
Whether you plan to head out to the theater or just be a couch potato, our critics have gathered together their favorite films and TV shows of 2024.
TV show: Agatha All Along
The best Marvel TV show has got the best follow-up to date. The first episode kicks off with a parody (滑稽模仿作品) that instantly catches the audience’s attention. As the show progresses, the episodes in which the characters dig deep into their memories are brilliant and moving. The show also involves dark magic and various magical conflicts, which show a dark, mysterious side of the Marvel Universe.
Genre: Kid-friendly comedy, science fiction and fantasy
Release date: September 18, 2024
TV show: Hacks Season 3
This may have been the strongest season yet of Hacks, because it steps away from the idea that Deborah and Ava are constantly at war and makes them — for now — become allies (盟友) and friends. The sharpness of the dialog continues to delight audiences, and the fact that both women are lovable and flawed goes a long way.
Genre: Comedy
Release date: May 2, 2024
Film: The Wild Robot
It is one of the most gorgeous and affecting movies of the year. Roz is a robot who was washed up on an island’s shore. At first, her presence did damage to the animal population, but over time, she adopted a goose and befriended a wily fox. Kids will find much to love and be entertained.
Genre: Kid-friendly animation
Release date: September 27, 2024

Since the 1920s, the sci-fi (科幻小说) writers have promised us that a self-driving car can go fast and take us to work while we read the news. But this vision has proved to be more challenging to perform in practice than in theory.
The so-called advanced driver assistance system has been equipped in some electric cars. But it is not what would be considered self-driving. The present automatic pilot tool can help you stay in your lane on the highway. However, according to a driving standards organization, it’s just graded to be Level 2 on the five-stage system of automation. Level 5 would be a full self-driving experience with hands off the steering wheel(方向盘). We aren’t there yet.
But that’s in the United States. Look farther and the future is closer. “If you look at China, the big cities like Shanghai and Shenzhen are testing self-driving cars in passengers transportation,” says George Simpson, director of the Center for Automotive Research in Duisburg, Germany. The self-driving taxis, which are run by Chinese auto and tech giants, are part of a countrywide plan to increase the sales of Level 4 vehicles to about 20 percent by 2030. They allow drivers to switch off mentally while still requiring them to keep their hands on or near the wheel.
What works in China might not work elsewhere, because of differing attitudes towards how data should be used, admits Simpson. Chinese citizens might accept that the journeys of their vehicles are tracked and analyzed to improve traffic flows. But Americans are concerned about their privacy, so they are unwilling to agree with that tracking.
Privacy concerns may delay the promise in the sci-fi that frees you from driving on your way home or to work. Self driving cars must constantly generate data from their sensors and software to make driving decisions, or they would crash.
4.What can we infer about advanced driver assistance system
A.It allows drivers’ hands off the wheel.
B.It is considered to be full self-driving.
C.It has been available in some electric cars.
D.It is graded Level 5 on the automation system.
5.What is the present situation of self-driving in China
A.It is going through test in some big cities.
B.Passengers transportation relies on self-driving.
C.It is less developed than that in the United States.
D.The sales of self-driving cars have increased to 20%.
6.What does the author want to show by comparing Chinese with Americans
A.The importance of data.
B.Different attitudes on data use.
C.The good attitudes of Americans.
D.The privacy concerns of Chinese.
7.In what column of a newspaper may this passage be found
A.Health. B.Advertisement.
C.Education. D.Technology.
Time travel is a favorite plot device in science fiction stories and movies. Perhaps the most famous recent series is Dr. Who, with its traveling Time Lords who whisk himself away throughout time as if traveling by jet. In other stories, the time travel is due to unexplainable circumstances such as a too-close approach to a very massive object like a black hole. However it is described in stories, it seems that traveling through time can always trigger people’s interest and ignite their imaginations. But, is such a thing possible
It’s important to remember that we are always traveling into the future. That’s the nature of space-time. This is why we remember the past (instead of “remembering” the future). The future is largely unpredictable because it hasn’t happened yet, but everyone is headed into it all the time. To speed up the process, what would or could anyone do to make it happen It’s a good question without a definitive answer. Right now, no one has built a working time machine to travel temporally. While it’s not possible (yet) to travel to the future faster than the rate at which we’re doing it now, it is possible to speed up the passage of time. But it has only happened so far to very few people who have traveled off Earth’s surface. For them, time moves at an extremely small different rate. Could it happen over longer time spans
It might, theoretically. According to Einstein’s theory of special relativity, the passage of time is relative to an object’s speed. The more quickly an object moves through space, the more slowly time passes for it. The classic example of traveling into the future is the twin paradox. It works like this: take a pair of twins, each 20 years old. One takes off on a spaceship on a five-year journey traveling at nearly the speed of light. The traveling twin ages five years while on the journey and returns to Earth at the age of 25. However, the twin who stayed behind is 95 years old! The twin on the ship experienced only five years of time passing, but returns to an Earth that is much farther into the future.
Similarly, intense gravitational fields can have the same effect. Time passes more slowly for an observer inside a massive object’s gravitational well. The stronger the gravity, the more it affects the flow of time.
Astronauts on the International Space Station experience a combination of these effects, though on a much smaller scale. Since they are traveling quite quickly and orbiting around Earth (a massive body with significant gravity), time slows down for them compared with people on Earth. The difference is much less than a second over the course of their time in space. But, it is measurable.
Until we can figure out a way to approach the speed of light, or travel near black holes without falling in, we won’t be able to do time travel any significant way into the future.
8.The first paragraph is used to ________.
A.introduce the major topic of this article to readers
B.tell readers how time travel happens in the virtual world
C.show that time travel is impossible in the real world
D.arouse readers’ interest in time travel through black holes
9.The underlined sentence in the second paragraph means that astronauts in space have the opportunity to get involved in the ________ passage of time.
A.faster B.slower
C.changeable D.invariable
10.What can you infer from the passage
A.It’s definitely impossible to travel faster into the future for lack of theorical supports.
B.Astronauts on missions can personally perceive changes in the rate at which time passes.
C.Einstein’s theory of relativity can currently prove to be true by doing experiments.
D.The passage of time in a black hole is faster than what we experience on the earth.
11.Which of the following can be the best title for this article
A.Einstein’s Wrong Prediction of Time Travel
B.Speed and Gravity Define What Time Is
C.Time Travel: Dream or Possible Reality
D.The Twin Paradox: Determiner of Time Travel
In America, the “Big Dig”, a highway project that resulted in a mess of traffic in the centre of Boston for years, came in five times over its initial budget. Even the Germans get huge projects wrong. Conception to operation of Berlin Brandenburg Airport has taken 30 years, with seven missed opening dates. The airport ended up costing $8.2 billion. However, the original estimate was about $2.7 billion.
Huge projects like Berlin Brandenburg Airport are the subject of an amusing new book called How Big Things Get Done by Bent Flyvbjerg and Dan Gardner. Mr. Flyvbjerg sets up a database of over 16, 000 projects and data analysis reveals that only 8.5% of the projects meet their initial estimates on cost and time, and 0.5% of them achieve what they set out to do on cost, time and benefits.
Over-optimistic time and cost estimates originate from both psychological and political perceptions: the reliance on intuition (直觉) rather than data, and a problem that Mr. Flyvbjerg calls “strategic misrepresentation”. This is when budgets are intentionally reduced in order to get things going. And once the projects are under way, they will not be stopped, because money spent on them will thus be wasted.
Mr. Flyvbjerg speaks highly of Pixar’s methodical approach to developing and testing films in great detail before they go into production. He also tells the story of how Frank Gehry’s well-developed architectural models helped ensure the success of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. Narrowing down the producing window of a project before it is actually carried out reduces the probability of unexpected events.
Big customized projects are particularly likely to run into trouble. However, the more a project can be divided into standardized processes, the better its prospects are. Projects run into problems for specific reasons as well as general ones: Britain’s trouble is not something that China has to worry about, for instance. But the iron law is that if you plan strictly and standardize where possible, you are less likely to dig yourself into a hole.
12.How does the author introduce the topic of the passage
A.By making a contrast. B.By giving an explanation.
C.By presenting examples. D.By showing an experience.
13.What message does Bent Flyvbjerg’s data analysis convey
A.Projects’ success rates can be estimated.
B.Projects’ desired outcome can’t be achieved.
C.Most projects suffer overspending and delays.
D.Most projects lack comprehensive data analysis.
14.What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A.Failures in decision-making. B.Methods of reducing massive costs.
C.Strategies for getting work done. D.Reasons behind inaccurate estimates.
15.What is the key to preventing projects getting into trouble
A.Planning thoroughly in advance.
B.Analyzing specific and general reasons.
C.Focusing on efficiency of projects.
D.Drawing lessons from former experiences.
Science fiction, or sci-fi, with more themes related to environmental issues, overpopulation, and technological growth, has explosively (爆发地) grown in popularity since the beginning of the 21st century. 16
Some Chinese Sci-Fi History
17 Few works were translated. And the Western world had little to no taste for it.
The history of Chinese sci-fi is extensive, but the modern genre first took root during the 1900s. Authors such as Lu Xun promoted sci-fi’s early development in China and translated multiple Western stories like Jules Verne’s From the Earth to the Moon. Following the 1970s, China began its own golden age of science fiction. Movies, clubs, magazines, societies and communities formed around this genre and became increasingly popular among Chinese readers. 18
Its Entry into the West
Chinese sci-fi has become internationally recognized, mainly because of Ken Liu, who translated The Three-Body Problem, the first contemporary Chinese sci-fi novel to be translated into English. 19 Chinese sci-fi’s introduction into the West began with this novel, and it couldn’t have been given a better international debut (亮相). Liu has become a go-to source for Chinese authors seeking international audiences.
What Makes Chinese Sci-Fi Distinctive (独特的)
The subgenre is unique for using a number of cultural and traditional objects, words, places and beliefs. 20 The stories are also different because many modern Chinese sci-fi authors were heavily affected by the events of the 20th century. Their perspectives (思维方式) and ideas on morals, ethics ( 伦理), government, politics, science and anything in between come from standpoints previously unknown to Western readers.
A.Published in 2014, it proved to be a huge success.
B.He is a writer, translator and computer scientist.
C.Before the 2000s, Chinese sci-fi was lesser-known.
D.Chinese sci-fi also made its way to take the West by storm.
E.Similar to Western sci-fi, it has experienced the ups and downs.
F.This laid the foundation for its eventual introduction to Western readers.
G.This makes Chinese sci-fi a cultural and historical analysis of China.

At just 12 years old, Sidney Vansleve has begun a remarkable journey to transform the lives of homeless individuals, one pair of socks at a time. Her mission, though seemingly simple, holds immense significance — socks, an often-overlooked necessity, are crucial for the well-being of those without a permanent roof over their heads.
“You don’t fully appreciate their importance until you’re forced to go without them for an extended period,” Sidney remarks thoughtfully. This realization dawned upon her after learning about the pressing need for socks among the homeless community, highlighted by the nonprofit organization Hope the Mission. Inspired by this revelation, Sidney decided to team up with Hope the Mission to launch a campaign to collect socks for the homeless.
Her ambitious target A quarter of a million pairs — an astonishing number that would ensure every client at Hope the Mission receives clean socks for an entire year. “We’re nearly at 200,000 pairs, but we need a final push to reach our goal,” shares Rowan Vansleve, the CFO of Hope the Mission and Sidney’s proud father.
Sidney credits her father as her biggest inspiration. “Without him, I wouldn’t have dreamed of doing this,” she admits gratefully. Rowan, equally as touched, responds, “I’m so proud to be her dad; she’s an extraordinary person.”
To facilitate donations, Sidney has set up two convenient methods: contributors can either add to her Amazon wishlist or visit any of the 29 Starbucks locations listed on the Hope of the Valley website. “People can donate in various packs or even just a single pair,” Sidney explains.
With the deadline for sock donations looming (迫近的) on December 27th, Sidney’s ambitions don’t stop there. She aims to make her mark in a different way — by breaking a Guinness World Record.

Before distributing the socks, Sidney wrote a note saying “you are loved” and attached it to each pair. She believed this simple message could bring warmth and hope. “I want them to know that someone cares,” Sidney said. Her team packed the socks carefully, and volunteers handed them out at Hope the Mission. When receiving the socks that were neatly packed, recipients were deeply moved, expressing gratitude. After hearing about her deeds, a local news reporter interviewed her.
After the report, donations flooded in from across the country. News of Sidney’s campaign spread widely, garnering support from social media, celebrities, schools, and businesses.
