24 C事实细节题 根据第二段的 “Melville's first two novels, Typee and Omoo were widely read and financially see可知, Typee 和 Omoo这两本书是很成功的。
He was no longer interested in telling tales of pure adventure, and his writing took on a style that turned off the general reading public of his time.”
26 C 推理判断题 根据第四段的“Melville’s next book, Pierre, was almost completely disregarded by the public. Debt frustration and ill health finally forced Melville to take a low-paying job as a customs inspector” 可知,Pierre出版后几乎完全被忽略了,而疾病缠身的梅尔维尔被迫在海关找了份检查员的工作,由此推断,当时的梅尔维尔已经很难靠写作谋生了
根据“ you see vapours (水汽) coming out of a building. You ask yourself, “ls it steam or smoke " If you are not sure, you look to other people for a clue about how to react, ”可知 作者用为这个“情况不明””的例子说明”the more ambiguous a situation is .” 由此判断ambiguous为不明确的”
34 B 事实细节题根据第五段对“旁观者效应”的解释“This says that the more people there are observing an emergency, the less responsible each one of them personally feels,”可知,“旁观者效应”指的是人越多,责任就被分摊,所以每个个体的责任感就变弱。
D项“To Help or Not, It's a Question”是个悬而未决的问题,不能直接表明作者的态度,也不能反映本文主旨,故不适合作标题。

You may have heard of the book Moby Dick, written by the American author Herman Melville. You may also know that Moby Dick is considered one of the greatest novels ever written. However, it might surprise you to find out Herman Melville was not always a highly regarded author.
Melville’s first two novels, Typee and Omoo, were widely read and financially successful. They were both exciting stories of adventures at sea and experiences with people in foreign lands. Melville became quite famous. However, upon the publication of his third book, Mardi, Melville’s popularity began to weaken. He was no longer interested in telling stories of pure adventure, and his writing took on a style that turned off the general reading public of his time.
Melville published Moby Dick in October of 1851. It was an original novel, which confused readers by its complex 复杂的symbolism. The book sold poorly.
Melville’s next book, Pierre, was almost completely disregarded by the public. Debt and ill health finally forced Melville to take a low-paying job as a customs inspector. Eventually, Melville abandoned prose(散文) and began to write poetry.
The Civil War is the main subject of Melville’s poetry. He and his brother made a trip to the front line, and he published a book of poems, Battle-Pieces and Aspects of War, based on this experience.
Melville died in 1891 at the age of 72. At this point, his work had been completely forgotten by the public. His talent was to go unrecognized for the next thirty years. Then, in the 1920s, his reputation名声 began to improve when people rediscovered his work. Today Moby Dick is one of the best-known novels ever penned by an American author.
Which of the following represents Melville’s success in his time

D. People improved their taste for reading.
26. What can be learnt about Melville after his book Pierre came out
A. He created his best-known novel.
B. He turned to write historical poems.
C. He could hardly earn a living by writing.
D. He gave up writing and joined the army.

C. The process of changing from a novelist to a poet.
D. The lessons of successes and failures from Melville.
C
Amazingly for the British, who love queues, there is no formal line-up. The bar staff are skilled at knowing whose turn it is. You are permitted to try to attract attention, but there are rules about how to do this. Do not call out, tap coins on the counter, or wave like a drowning swimmer. Do not sigh or roll your eyes. And whatever you do, do not ring the bell hanging behind the counter--this is used by the landlord to signal closing time. The key thing is to catch the bar workers’ eyes. You could also hold an empty glass or some money, but do not wave them about. Do adopt an expectant, hopeful, even slightly anxious facial expression. If you look too complacent, the bar staff may assume you are already being served.
Always say "please" and try to remember some of the British bar staff’s annoyance. They do not like people to keep others waiting while they are making up their minds. They don’t like people standing against the bar when there are a lot of customers wanting for service. And they do not like people who wait until the end of the order before asking for such drinks as Guinness Stout which take considerably longer to pour than other drinks.
One Dutch tourist who spent six months visiting 800 of Britain’s 61,000 pubs and interviewing 50 bar bosses and workers and more than 1,000 customers said:“ I cannot understand how the British ever manage to buy themselves a drink”. But they do, and if you follow these tips you should be able to do so, too.
Speaking of tips, you should never offer the bar staff cash. The correct behavior is to offer them a drink. Pubs pride themselves on their equal atmosphere. A tip in cash would be a reminder of their service role. However, the offer of a drink is a friendly gesture.
28. What does the underlined word “complacent" in paragraph 1 mean
A. Contented. B. Worried.C. Polite. D. Annoyed.
29. How should customers attract the bar staff's attention
A. To tap coins on the counter.
B To hold an empty glass or some money.
C To wave like drowning swimmers.
D. To ring the bell hanging behind the counter.
30. What does the writer suggest people do in bars
A Correct bar staff's misbehaviors. B Tip bar staff in cash.
C Offer people present a drink.
D Help to maintain the equal atmosphere.
31. Which column might the passage be taken from
A Health. B.Culture. C Economy. D. Politics.
D
You're rushing to work and a man ahead of you falls down. Do you stop to help In a study of by-standers, it was found that some people look away or keep on walking rather than stop and get involved.
“People tend to decide that no action is needed.” says Ervin Staub, a psychologist 心理学家 at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. “The first thoughts like “Why should I be the one to help ” often keep you from offering help.
Time and again, good and caring people fail to come to the aid of others. They know they should act and yet, for reasons they themselves don't understand, people sometimes don't respond. Why
One thing we know is that the more ambiguous a situation is, the less likely people are to help. Let’s say you see vapours (水汽) coming out of a building. You ask yourself, “ls it steam or smoke " If you are not sure, you look to other people for a clue about how to react. If you see other people doing nothing, you think, “Of course, that's just steam.” You don't want it to be smoke, because then you would have to do something about it.
Another one is known as “the bystander effect". This says that the more people there are observing an emergency, the less responsible each one of them personally feels. For example, if you are the only person in the world who can act to save someone in a dangerous situation, you are more likely to act. However, if you are one of 100,000 people who could save the situation, you would be happier if one of the other 99,999 people did it!
“If you notice trouble, force yourself to stop and judge the situation instead of walking on," says Ervin Staub. Then try to involve other people, you don't have to take on all the responsibility of being helpful. According to Staub, it is sometimes just a matter of turning to the person next to you and saying, “'It looks like we should do something." Once you take action, most people will take their cues (提示) from you and also help.
32. What may cause some people's failure to help according to the study
A. They don't know how to help.
B. They think it's none of their business.
C. They fear their help may be rejected.
D. They expect others to act.
33. What does the underlined word “ambiguous’ in paragraph 4 mean
A.Difficult. B.Dangerous. C.Unclear. D.Unpleasant.
34. What does “the bystander effect” show
A. The majority of people have the same idea.
B. More people, less responsibility
C. Many hands make light work.
D. People usually think twice before they act.
35. What can be the best title for the text
A. Stick to Your Decision
B. Don't Just Stand There
C.It's the Thought That Counts
D To Help or Not, it's a Question
