The Cube Houses are a popular attraction, but they are also real houses so that tourists can accommodate here! The blocks have concrete foundations and floors with a wood living space on top. Shiny metal panels add visual appeal. The furniture is tailor-made to fit the odd angles where the walls meet.
Bubble Palace, France
INSPIRATION: “Habitology”, an idea that habitats could use nature’ s flexible lines instead of straight lines and sharp angles.
This house may look like a space settlement, but it’s a 10-bedroom palace where travelers can stay shortly. Made of cave-like bubbles, it also has ponds, waterfalls, swimming pools, an outdoor theater that seats 500 people, and views of the Mediterranean Sea.

Dallas-based Knit Wits is made up of a group of grandmothers with a strong love for knitting (编织) who turn their love for crafting (精心制作) into a purposeful attempt. Meeting regularly, they pour their collective love into every stitch (针法) they make. The group has been working for over ten years, meeting every Friday, to support organizations that help others, locally and around the world. Over the years, they’ve crafted thousands of items in support of the important things.
Recently the Knit Wits member Mary Ann Stover was encouraged to have the group knit hats for infant (婴儿) patients with heart disease at Children’s Health Hospital. The hats, each a unique work of art, designed with holiday themes, reflect the skill of the Knit Wits. More importantly, the special of Knit Wits is its understanding of the emotional effect these small objects can have on the infants experiencing medical treatments.
Bealle, a certified child life specialist at Children’s Health Hospital, explained how the hats are making a difference to the tiny patients and their families. “Caregivers are able to wear the hats on their body to move their smells before placing the hats back on the infants, encouraging connecting and making the infants less stressful,” he said.
Throughout the infants’ admission, many holidays are celebrated. At times, some infants are seriously ill and unable to dress up for holiday photos the families have planned. Thanks to the donations from Knit Wits, the hospital team is able to provide the family with a suitable themed infant hat the family can use for their photos and holiday celebrations.
What do we know about the hats from Paragraph 2
They centre on spiritual comfort. B. They have holiday food subjects.
C. They are knitted by the caregivers. D. They are worn on child parents’ birthdays.
15. Why do the caregivers wear the hats first
A. To hold an artistic activity. B. To see off the recovered patients.
C. To relax the infants for treatments. D. To welcome the arrival of various holidays.
16. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. Why some holiday celebrations are held. B. What the hats can be used as on holidays.
C. Why some special photos are important. D. What the hats can be matched with.
17. Which of the following can best describe the members of Knit Wits
A. Careful. B. Brave. C. Warm-hearted. D. Energetic.

From Mozart to Metallica, tons of people enjoy listening to various types of music while they paint, write, or draw. Most believe that music helps increase creativity, but an international study conducted by English and Swedish researchers is challenging that view. The study results were echoed by scientists from Lancaster University, and the University of Gavle, saying their findings show music actually weakens creativity.
To reach their conclusions, researchers had volunteers complete verbal problems designed to inspire creativity while sitting in a quiet room, and then again while music played in the background. They found that background music significantly weakened the volunteers’ ability to complete tasks connected with verbal creativity. The team also tested background noises like those commonly heard in a library, but found that such noises had no influence on subjects’ creativity.
The tasks were simple word games. For example, volunteers were given three words, such as dress, rise, and flower. Then, they were asked to find a single word connected with all three that could be combined to form a common phrase or word. The single word, in this case, would be “sun” (sundress, sunrise, sunflower). Volunteers completed the tasks in either a quiet room, or while listening to two different types of music: rock music or light music
“We found strong evidence of weakened performance when playing background music in comparison to quiet background conditions,” says co-author D. Neil McLatchie of Lancaster University. He and his colleagues find that music negatively influences the verbal working memory processes of the brain, preventing creativity. Also, as far as the library background noises having seemingly no effect, the study’s authors believe that was the case because library noises create a “regular state” environment that doesn’t affect concentration.
“To conclude, the findings here challenge the popular view that music increases creativity, and instead show that music, whatever type it is, is always a disadvantage for creative performance in problem solving,” the study reads.
18. What does the underlined word “echoed” in Paragraph 1 mean
A. challenged B. accepted C. doubted D. heard
19. What were the volunteers asked to do in the study
A. To play music. B. To combine given words.
C. To create new words. D. To connect words with music.
20. What can we infer from the study
A. Quiet background inspires creativity best.
B. Library noise does no harm to creativity.
C. Music has a bad effect on language ability.
D. Music types matter in creative performance.
21. Which is the main idea of the passage
A. Quiet Environments Prevent Concentration.
B. Background Noise Affects Concentration.
C. Composing Music Weakens Creativity.
D. Listening to Music Reduces Creativity.

Have you ever seen a live spade-toothed whale (铲齿中喙鲸) It is the world’s rarest kind of whale. Do you know how many of them exist, what they eat, or even where they live in the southern Pacific Ocean Scientists in New Zealand may finally get to learn more about them.
The country’s conservation agency said that it believed a dead spade-toothed whale had been washed up on a South Island beach earlier this month. Scientists identified the whale by its color patterns and the shape of its organs-its head, mouth and teeth. Hannah Hendriks is a sea life expert for the Department of Conservation. She said, “This is going to lead to some amazing science and world-first information.”
In the past, only a few other dead spade-toothed whales appeared on New Zealand’s beaches. Most notably, scientists didn’t have a chance to closely examine them, but now, they will be able to. They have moved the whale to a cold place for their investigation.
“Spade tooth whales live deep in the ocean. They come to the surface so rarely that scientists only know their general location in the southern Pacific Ocean. It is home to some of the world’s deepest ocean areas. It’s very hard to do research on marine mammals (海洋哺乳动物) if you don’t see them at sea,” Hendriks said. “You don’t know where to look.”
Kirsten Young is a senior lecturer at the UK’s University of Exeter. She studies spade-toothed whales. She wrote in an email that it took many years and a lot of efforts by researchers and local people to identify the whales. “This new discovery makes me wonder how many there are in the deep ocean and how they live,” Young said.
In fact, researchers studying the mammal couldn’t confirm if the species died out or went extinct, until in 2010, two spade toothed whales, both dead, appeared on a New Zealand beach. Samples of their cells later showed they were spade-toothed whales.
How does the author begin the text
A.By raising questions. B. By giving examples.
C. By listing numbers. D. By making comparisons.
23. Why is the discovery of the spade-toothed whale important
A. It shows a new kind of whale exists.
B. It identifies the whale by its place of death.
C. It confirms the whale’s population is on the rise.
D. It allows scientists to study the whale up close.
24. What did Hendriks stress about the spade-toothed whale research in paragraph 4
A. Its reasons. B. Its benefits. C. Its challenge. D. Its process.
25.What is Young’s attitude to the new discovery
A. Worried. B. Curious. C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.

First aid refers to the initial medical attention given immediately after an injury or an accident. 26 They think it’s a job exclusive to medical professionals. In fact, it’s a life skill we all should try to learn.
According to The Guardian, over 150,000 people get critically injured or die yearly because of people’s lack of first aid knowledge. That’s a tall number considering we live in the modern age. Thus, more people must know what to do in case of accidents or medical emergencies. 27 We can reduce these life-threatening situations by learning the prompt care needed in such situations.
Whether we like it or not, accidents and emergencies happen at any time. 28 In the USA alone, over six million people are involved in traffic accidents each year. In fact, it’s the leading cause of death for people between the ages of 1 and 54. That said, no one can predict when or where disaster may strike. These accidents can happen at home, at work, or while in transit. That’s why basic first aid skills like CPR, disinfecting (消毒) wounds, and learning to stop bleeding can go a long way.
29 It’s a vital step that prevents injuries from worsening until full medical help arrives. For instance, when a person experiences cardiac arrest, they only have 3 to 4 minutes before the brain lacks oxygen. What you do in these minutes will impact the patient’s condition. Calling for an ambulance is, of course, your priority. 30
A. Developed countries witness a greater death rate.
B. But it might encounter traffic jams during rush hours.
C. However, if you can employ CPR, it can relieve the damage.
D. It’s a part of our reality that we must always prepare ourselves for.
E. The bad news is that not many people know the importance of first aid.
F. Heart attacks and choking endanger thousands of lives on a yearly basis.
G. The first few minutes are the most critical in the case of a medical emergency.

Never Give Up
When we are in trouble, we are always told “ Never give up". This can be encouraging words and words of determination. A person who believes in himself/herself will keep trying to reach his/her goal no matter how many times he/she fails.
In my opinion, never giving up is a valuable quality in study and life. When I met difficulties in the past, I would be very impatient and wanted to give up. Some day I realized that if I kept giving up all the time, I would be a loser. So I tried to get over my fear and became patient. Now I no longer feel afraid of difficulties and these difficulties become my motivation to move forward. I will never give up until I realize my dream.
Thank you for your listening.
