My name is Howard Tucker.
Studies have shown that keeping one’s brain stimulated may prevent many age-related cognitive impairments(认知伤害). I keep my brain stimulated by working though for those who have retired or plan on retiring, a mentally stimulating hobby might be a suitable alternative. It is critical to know yourself and understand your limits and capabilities, but I firmly believe that retirement is the enemy of longevity (长寿).
With people continuing to live longer, it may soon be commonplace to see individuals working into their 80s, 90s and, in some cases, past 100, like me. I now spend my time teaching medical and law students at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and I prioritize staying current with the latest trends in neurology (神经学), my area of specialization.
Over the years I’ve had to adapt frequently to the changing technology, which isn’t always easy for someone my age. Many doctors I’ve known simply retired because they did not want to learn how to use computers. But I believe that a desire to continue to learn is a must in one’s later years.
While technology has made a huge impact on the practice of medicine, I still urge my medical students to listen to patients, take a thorough patient history and look at the patient while questioning him/her. Then, I would have them look at the imaging studies.
I believe I am wiser now, in the sense I am less judgmental and more patient with my medical students who have forgotten how to take a thorough patient history, the most important part of the examination.
Of course, I’ve had to make adjustments over the years. Pacing is important. It feels like only yesterday that I would be going on rounds seeing patients in the hospital at 5:00 a. m. Now with my 102nd birthday less than two months away, I find myself sleeping in. But I wake up at 8:30 am, ready to face the day ahead of me.
24. What was Howard Tucker’s job in the past
A. Writer. B. Doctor. C. Teacher. D. Scientist.
25. Why does Howard Tucker give the talk
A. To celebrate his longevity.
B. To advocate lifetime learning.
C. To explain why he keeps working after retirement.
D. To clarify what is the most important in neurology.
26. How does Howard Tucker see technology
A. Adapt to it as it is easy to learn. B. Learn it to avoid retirement.
C. Use it to replace old methods. D. Combine it with traditional ways.
27. What causes Howard Tucker to make adjustments over the years
A. His age B. His illness. C. His student. D. His sleep.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary puts it simply: “birdbrain: a stupid person”. Well, some birds are having the last laugh with that one.
For animals, the ability to solve problems with multiple tools is a rare talent, which was reported only in chimpanzees (大猩猩). But now, a study conducted by Osuna-Mascaró’steam adds Goffin’s cockatoos (small white parrots) to the “Dean’s List”,too.
Inspired by the chimpanzees which fish for white ants via tools, the team tasked the cockatoos with fishing for a kind of nut in three experiments. Firstly, the researchers made a box containing a nut which was covered by a transparent membrane (薄膜). Once acockatoo broke it through with a sharp stick, the bird would need to use a straw (麦秆) to reach the nut. The birds were supplied with the two tools.
Seven of the 10 cockatoos figured it out, with two completing the task within 35 seconds on their first attempt! Since the cockatoos don’t have similar foraging (觅食的) requirements in the wild, there is no chance that they can adapt their tool-using strategies to the task naturally.
Next, the team mixed up the boxes and randomly presented each bird with a box with the membrane or a box without. The birds were given the same two tools. As a result, all the cockatoos mastered the test quickly and were able to recognize when a single tool was sufficient and when two tools were required.
However, the birds showed an interesting behavior beyond the researchers’ expectations. “When they chose between which tool to use, they were picking one up, releasing it, then picking up the other one, and so on,” says Osuna-Mascaró . “It is worthwhile to figure this out in future.”
Subsequently, the researchers evaluated the birds’ transportation ability while carrying tools in different situations. Most cockatoos carried the two tools together when they were presented with a box having the membrane. “I’ve seen birds combining objects playfully, but they rarely transport more than one object together in their normal behavior,” says one biologist. “We feel that, in terms of technical cognition and tool use, birds have been underestimated. Maybe it’s time for dictionary editors to justify birds.”
28. What is the common feature of the animals in the “Dean’s List”
A. Exceptional social behavior.
B. The ability to recognize objects.
C. Strong adaptability to the environment.
D. The intelligence to use tools purposefully.
29. What’s the purpose of employing membrane in the first experiment
A. To prevent the nut from falling off.
B. To pose a challenge to the cockatoos.
C. To increase the visual appeal of the box.
D. To encourage competition among the cockatoos.
30. What can we learn about the cockatoos from the second experiment
A. They can employ tools correspondingly.
B. They can identify the order of the boxes.
C. They can memorize the location of each nut.
D. They can prioritize the boxes with the membrane.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. How do Goffin’s cockatoos use tools in the wild
B. Why did we use to underestimate birds’ intelligence
C. Goffin’s cockatoos beat off chimpanzees in using tools
D. Goffin’s cockatoos breakdown the “birdbrain” prejudice
D
Jobs are central to our lives. They enable us to make a living. Productive jobs create wealth and drive development. Full employment ensures not only economic prosperity but also social cohesion and stability. That is why the International Labour Organization (ILO), as one of the UN agencies specialized in employment, promotes decent work as a key to sustainable development and social justice.
Globally, the world of work is undergoing great changes unseen in a century. We often hear that many people can’t find jobs, while employers can’t find qualified employees. Ever those who have jobs are worried about the future of their jobs.
Such anxiety is not misplaced. The ILO’s World Employment and Social Outlook 202 ( report shows that all regions are facing major job-skills gaps and mismatches. According to its study, a generation ago the skills you learned in school were sufficient for you to survive in the job market for a while. Now half of the skills you acquired through education and training may start to depreciate (贬值) within 5 years! (Boston Consulting Group, 2023) Skills become outdated much quicker, as technological transformation and the green transition (转型) are quickening.
ChatGPT is a case in point. AI has the potential to replace many professional and ever creative jobs. The potential threat is no longer limited to replacing unskilled repetitive jobs by automation. Technologies are fundamentally reshaping workplaces and jobs.
The green transition is another driver for growing skill-job mismatch. The automobile industry may continue to boom, but electronic cars require a different set of human skills from fossil fuel-driven cars. Jobs in high carbon emission sectors will gradually disappear, while alternative jobs are greened or created in green sectors. According to an ILO analysis, because of the green transition, there could be around 78 million job losses globally by 2030. However, over 103 million jobs can be created — but only if workers can be systematically reskilled and upskilled. (ILO, 2019)
32. What is the structure of the text
A. Problem and solution. B. Definition and example.
C. Significance and action. D. Phenomenon and analysis.
33. How does the author prove his point of view in the third paragraph
A. By using examples. B. By making analysis.
C. By using his own data. D. By referring to other researches.
34. The author mentions ChatGPT and electronic cars to show
A. why there are job-skills gaps and mismatches
B. why we should be careful about technology
C. the importance of education and training
D. the necessity of reshaping workplaces and jobs
35. What is the author’s attitude towards the green transition
A. Objective. B. Dismissive. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2. 5分, 满分12. 5分)
Loving your own body is often easier said than done. Do you know that 70% of women between the ages of 18-30 dislike their bodies 36 45% say they are dissatisfied with their bodies too. There are countless ways you can work on body positivity, and you’ll have to find out what works for you.
Think healthier, not skinnier
When you’re making meals, or when you’re hitting the gym, don’t set your fitness goals according to a number you’d like to see on the scale. Exercise and a healthy diet shouldn’t be a punishment. 37 So, instead of thinking about how much your body weighs, or how it’s shaped, think about all the amazing things it can do.
Surround yourself with positivity
Negative messages about body image are all around us. According to one study, participants who spent more time on social media were more likely to develop a negative body image and eating disorders. 38 Look for positive people, people who practice self-love, and people who will encourage you to be who you are.
Focus on the things you like about yourself
Every time a negative thought about your body pops into your mind, counter it with something positive. Try making lists of the things you like about your body. And not just how it looks, but the things it allows you to do. 39 We naturally tend to look for our dissatisfactions and overlook the good things. To break out of that way of thinking, it will take daily repetition. Just keep at it.
Stop comparing yourself to others
40 One person is beautiful in one way, and the next person in some other way. And isn’t that how it should be Imagine how boring it would be if there were only one way to be, and to feel, paring yourself to others can leave you feeling like you don’t look the way you should, but you’re not supposed to look like someone else; you’re supposed to look like you.
A. List it all out.
B. Pickup a new hobby.
C. And men aren’t much better off.
D. People come in all shapes and sizes.
E. So, try to cut out the negativity that you can.
F. Often we project our own insecurities onto others.
G. It is one way we show respect and appreciation for our bodies.

Wang Ximeng, an 18-year-old boy, spent half a year creating a nearly 12-meter-long landscape painting under the guidance of Emperor Huizong, the ___56___ (eight) emperor of the Song Dynasty. He probably couldn’t believe that the silk scroll painting ___57___ (regard) as a masterpiece, Wang Ximeng’s A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains, measuring 51.5 ___58___ 1191.5 centimeters, has been ____59____ (extreme) popular in China. The waves on the rivers show great patience and techniques of the painter. But ____61____ you think there’s nothing special in the mountains, think again. Amid the continuous, almost-same-height mountains, one tall mountain, ____62____ towers over all the others around it, suddenly appears. Experts hold a belief ___63___ it represents the young man’s ambition, standing there, like he is the center of the world.
Actually Wang Ximeng is underrepresented in the history of great Chinese artists simply because he has no other ____64____ (know) works surviving today. Nobody knows exactly when he died, _____65_____ it is believed that he passed away in his twenties.
The excellent skills in the painting make it hard to believe that it came from a teenager. Historians believe beyond the young man’s ambition and his landscape painting skills, it also contains great value for historical studies into the Song Dynasty.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One of my first nights on call started by responding to a message on my phone, and then I arrived at the animal hospital hurriedly.
I had been working as a veterinary (兽医的) nurse at a university hospital for only nine months. My job included assisting doctors in performing operations on animals. And I was already familiar with the basic operation procedure: preparing operation tools, giving anesthesia (麻醉), positioning the animal on the operation table, cleaning the injured part, and at last, attaching the steel plate to the broken bone.
On this particular night, the only information given was an emergency that needed my immediate attention. I was calm, yet anxious as I headed to the hospital. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, I found that two doctors and another nurse had just arrived. They were checking the patient in a stall (牲畜棚) near the operation room.
I entered the stall, surprised to find there stood a tiny horse. Obviously, she lived outside all year round. Her entire body was covered with caked-on mud. She looked normal. The only thing out of place was the unnatural angle at which she held her right back leg, which was injured. As I came closer, I realized she was shaking and sweating, even though the night was cool.
As I approached, I heard her family talking to her, their voices quiet and serious. “It’s okay, Doro. We love you. Doctors will fix you right up, ”said a small child. Her name was Daisy and the horse was 28-year-old with a broken leg. For a horse, such an injury usually means the death sentence. And Doro’s age was against her.
Her family included Mom, Dad, Daisy and her twin brothers, who were as worried as the little girl about the seriousness of the horse’s condition. Looking wide-eyed and frightened, Daisy turned to her father and asked, “Daddy, you won’t let Doro die, will you ”That look in her eyes struck everyone’s heart. I knew we would be working all night to save Doro.
Soon, we anxiously prepared for the operation.

I rushed into Central Supply, the area where all our operation tools were kept. My heart was pounding as I quickly gathered the necessary tools, double-checking to make sure nothing was missing. With the tools in hand, I dashed back to the operating room. The doctors were already preparing, and we all worked in harmony, determined to give Doro the best chance at recovery. The operation was no easy job even with the doctors’ expertise and my whole-hearted assistance. I could feel the pressure mounting, knowing that every second counted in saving Doro. Time seemed to have frozen in the stall.
“Doro has woken up and now you can see e!” I cheerfully told the family. They all rushed in, their faces filled with hope and anticipation. They crowded around Doro, tears of relief streaming down their faces as they saw her slowly regaining consciousness. Daisy let out a squeal of joy and hugged her father tightly. The horse looked at them with a gentle gaze, as if she knew she was loved. We all watched with smiles on our faces, feeling a sense of accomplishment and gladness that our efforts had paid off. The family thanked us over and over again, and in that moment, I knew that our hard work and dedication had truly made a difference.
