第一节 应用文
Hello, everyone!
In an era dominated by screens, I’ve found physical books offer something invaluable: the space for intense and uninterrupted deep thinking.
Opening a book transports us to a world free from distractions — no ads or endless scrolling, which facilitates profound engagement with brilliant ideas, cultivating critical thinking and creativity. Moreover, unlike movies or videos presenting everything visually, books leave room for interpretation and make it possible for readers to visualize the story in their own way.
Therefore, let’s put our phones down and make a conscious choice to commit ourselves to regularly reading physical books.
Thank you for listening!
第二节 读后续写
Days passed, and Faraz returned home on the day Ahmed’s exam results were announced. After school that day, Ahmed raced home, excitedly sharing that he’d come in second in his class. The family was overjoyed, and Faraz proudly declared, “Ahmed, you’ve earned your reward!” But when Faraz returned empty-handed from his room, his face fell. “They’re gone,” he said, confused. After an awkward silence among the family, Ahmed spoke in a shaky voice, “I took them ... I was afraid you would withhold them if I failed.” He then fetched the headphones and handed them to Faraz.
Faraz was disappointed, saying Ahmed had stolen something meant to be his. Feeling ashamed, Ahmed cried and ran to his room. Concerned, Faraz came to Ahmed and found him in bed, face buried in his pillow. When Ahmed felt his brother’s touch, he turned and hugged him, apologizing through tears. Faraz hugged him back. “What you did was wrong,” he said gently, “but recognizing your mistake is what matters.” Ahmed nodded, wiping his eyes. “I’ll never do it again.” With a warm smile, Faraz patted his head and said, “Come on! Your headphones are waiting.”

W: Hello, I’m calling to know about the wooden desk for sale on the platform.
M: Yes. As is shown, its surface is a bit worn, but it works well. If you’re interested, please come and have a look.
Text 2
W: Peter, did you get my package today
M: Well, when I got outside the supermarket, I came across Stefan, my old friend. We went to a café and talked for a while. Then he drove me back. As soon as I got home, the package hit my mind.
Text 3
M: It seems you’re new here.
W: Yeah, I just moved into the neighbourhood. I don’t know many people here.
M: Relax. People here are kind. They enjoy entertaining neighbors at home, just like now. Take something to drink and eat
W: Thanks. Orange juice please.
Text 4
W: The doctor advises me to lose some weight, and I plan to go jogging tomorrow.
M: But Nancy, the weather app says it may rain heavily tomorrow. Jane and I will go for table tennis in the gym. Why not join us
W: Well, I’ll take my bats.
Text 5
M: Mom, where are the soft drinks I put them on the table.
W: Jim, perhaps they think you shouldn’t take in so much sugar, so they hid themselves. Just take some water.
Text 6
W: Mike, please pass me the glass container on the table. Thank you.
M: Here you are. Is that tomato soup
W: Yes. Grandpa doesn’t feel much like eating these days. I’m making some tomato soup for him, hoping it will appeal to him.
M: Grandpa will love it. Then how are you going to store it
W: I’ve already boiled the container. I’m now waiting for the soup to cool completely. Then I’ll pour the soup into the airtight container before refrigerating it. This helps maintain the soup’s flavor and freshness. Set the refrigerator to a temperature of 4°C or below. It can be safely stored for 3-4 days.
M: Anna, you’re something!

M: Hello, this is Sunshine Dance Center.

M: Let me check. I am sorry that there are no seats available on Wednesday. Is it convenient for you this Thursday afternoon There are still a few spots available.
W: That will be a bit difficult. I have to give a speech at the city library at 5:00 pm that day.

W: Fine, Jonathan. I’ve just returned from my music class at a college for seniors and retirees.

W: There are various courses from health management to painting. The best part is that the college doesn’t charge us any fees.
M: It’s amazing.
W: So how are you You look as spirited as ever.
M: Well, I’ve retired and have a lot of free time, but I’m bored. You know, the older we get, the more we need to do something to keep our minds sharp. So I got a job again at a car company.

W: Yes. My daughter, Elena, and I wanted to engage in a new lifestyle, so we stayed with a local family for a few days.
M: That sounds special.
W: Yeah. What amazed me was that even though Elena couldn’t speak the local language, that didn’t stop her from preparing food and shopping at the local market with the children in that family. They even went on a biking tour of the city.
M: Elena seemed to enjoy living there.
W: You know what, yesterday, she suggested we make pancakes she learned there. She’s ten. Many things go in one ear and out the other at this age, but it’s heartwarming that she remembers and cares.
M: That’s part of her story now.
W: You’re right. Her world is a bit bigger than it was before. How are you these days
M: Well, I’m still busy with the project. I’m really glad to have your help as soon as you’re back.
W: Take your time. I’ll sort out the materials.
Text 10
W: Welcome to today’s program! We’re going to talk about noise pollution. We’re usually surrounded by sounds like alarm clocks, automobile engines and traffic. However, these “normal” sounds often cross the line and affect our quality of life. We define them as noise pollution.
Noise pollution has serious consequences for human beings. One obvious negative effect is the hearing problem people can suffer when they are exposed to loud sounds for too long. When it interrupts sleep cycles, people can experience health problems caused by insufficient rest and tiredness, like headaches. What’s worse, noise pollution has also been linked to higher levels of stress and high blood pressure.
To fight noise pollution, turn down the volume on electronic devices. Close doors and minimize the use of loud machinery. As for the things you can’t control, developing better designs for urban space may one day reduce the effects of traffic, construction and industrialization.
Noise pollution has led people to create quiet places. Gordon Hempton, an ecologist, has started the “One Square Inch of Silence”, which exists within the rainforest along the Hoh River within Olympic National Park in Washington. There, you’ll only hear sounds like the whisper of the wind, or the soft flow of the river.2024----2025学年度第二学期月考

In the summer before my senior year of high school, my friends and I traveled to Ecuador on a volunteer trip with an organization called ME to WE.
Flashback to the fall of my junior year: my two friends and I went to an event called WE Day in Minneapolis, the United States, which first opened us up to the possibility of making a volunteer trip a reality. WE Day is an event put on by ME to WE, which has programs set up all around the world to help people in developing countries through the five aspects of education, clean water and sanitation(公共卫生), health, agriculture and food security, as well as income and livelihood.
For our global project, we wanted to do one of their volunteer trips in another country. Of course, this sounded like a great opportunity and we were ready to jump on it, but none of us were unaware of the term “voluntourism". This is when people travel to developing countries to volunteer, but in reality, they just make things worse than they originally were. This was definitely something we wanted to avoid, so we did a lot of research into the credibility of this program.
After research, we found it very credible and really liked the idea behind their projects, which was to give “hand ups”instead of “handouts". This means that they work to help the local people learn to maintain the work that they help start rather than just setting projects up and then leaving them behind.
When we arrived in Ecuador, we worked alongside community members to dig out old pipes on the top of a mountain that led to the town and gave them access to running water. Digging out pipes at such a high altitude was definitely a challenge, but being able to work alongside great people while doing it made it so much better. What’s more, my perspective has widened and now I look forward to a time when I can do something like this again.
24. How did WE Day most likely influence the author and her friends
A. Convincing them to travel worldwide.
B. Giving them an overview of the world.
C. Motivating them to volunteer more abroad.
D. Making them aware of their local issues.
25.How does the author most probably feel about voluntourism
A. Critical. B. Curious. C. Uncertain. D.Enthusiastic.
26. What is the core idea of the projects of ME to WE
A. Providing immediate financial aid.
B. Expanding their reach to more people.
C. Replacing labor with modern technology.
D. Equipping locals with sustainable skills.
27. What was the author probably assigned to do in Ecuador
A. Teach the villagers life skills. B. Trace the history of Ecuador.
C. Restore the water supply for the locals. D. Communicate with the local talents.

A system of canals (运河) used to direct and catch fish was found in Belize, establishing “continuity” between the Mayans and a predecessor (前一代) as they continued to use them. First believed to have been a Mayan construction, after running numerous radiocarbon dates, researchers from the University of New Hampshire(UNH) made a discovery that these fish-trapping canals were constructed before the powerful Mayan civilization.
The network directed the annual flood waters into a source pool where they could trap thousands of fish, which were able to feed a growing population. It has been estimated that the Mayan population numbered eight million.“It seems likely that the canals allowed for annual fish harvests and social meetings, which would have encouraged people to return to this area year after year and stay for longer periods of time,”said Marieka Brouwer Burg, professor at the University of Vermont.
In the largest inland wetland in Belize, Central America, New Hampshire researchers conducted tests on a large-scale pre-Columbian fish-trapping facility. At first, they never expected that anyone but the Mayans could have constructed such a complex means of catching fish. Yet, the presence of the canals extended over a thousand years in the past, before the Mayans began to appear, which“surprised”researchers due to its massive size.
“In general, we tend to regard agricultural production as the engine of civilization, but this study tells us that it wasn't just agriculture,”according to Eleanor Harrison-Buck, director of the Belize River East Archaeology project. Collecting samples along the walls, the researchers investigated carbon levels to determine “environmental changes over time". With no evidence of crop production in sight, they concluded that these channels served as large-scale fish-trapping facilities.
“Such intensive investments in fishery show ancient fishers knew how to protect their resources and use them in a way that could sustain these habitats,” Samantha, professor of geography at Texas State University, explained. “Knowing how to use canal resources responsibly is essential for the continued availability of these resources both in the past and today.”
28. What did the researchers from the UNH find
A. A fish-trapping skill is kept till today.
B. Mayan civilization holds great mysteries.
C. A canal system predates Mayan civilization.
D. Canal systems are crucial to ancient people.
29. What do we know about the canal network
A. It linked Maya to the outside. B. It assisted in Mayan development.
C. It caused frequent floods in Belize. D. It promoted the Mayans’ fishing trade.
30. Which of the following may Samantha agree with
A. Sustainable development is a shared topic.
B. Fishery used to be the main economic source.
C. Ancient fishers faced special survival pressure.
D. Ancient Mayans relied heavily on the environment.
31.What can be a suitable title of the text
A. The Rise and Fall of the Mayan Civilization
B.Eco-Friendly Fishing Defined Ancient Belize
C. Ancient Fishing Activities Boost Maya Populations
D. Fish-Trapping Facility Redefines Its Maya Origin

Orb-weaver spiders (圆网蜘蛛) don't have ears, yet they can still “listen”, which may seem unbelievable. However, in 2022, a research team led by mechanical engineer Ron Miles at Binghamton University discovered that spider silk functions as a highly sensitive listening device, capable of detecting sounds from up to ten feet away.
Human hearing is based on air pressure changes in our ears. When pressure shifts, our eardrums vibrate at different frequencies, sending electrical signals to the brain to identify sounds. “Microphones were designed to copy this process, but to make microphones more powerful and sensitive, they need to be larger, which goes against the desire for easy-to-take technology. Humans just modeled microphones after our own ears, but that's not always the best approach; spiders might offer a better solution,” says Miles in an interview.
Spiderwebs are less affected by changes in air pressure. Instead, they vibrate in the airflow created by a sound wave, allowing spiders to “hear” by feeling that motion — and even judge the direction of the noise. After testing the sensitivity of spider webs from the Binghamton University campus, Miles and his colleague found that spider silk can register sounds ranging from 1 hertz to 50 kilohertz — more than the human hearing range of 20 hertz to 20 kilohertz.
Inspired by these findings, Miles, along with postdoctoral researcher Junpeng Lai, has developed a microphone. Instead of using actual spider silk, the device employs silicon (硅) to detect airflow changes. “Because spider silk is, of course, created by spiders, it is unfeasible to apply it to the billions of microphones that are made each year,” Miles says. “It does, however, teach us a lot about what mechanical features are desirable in a microphone."
Miles and others are working to develop new instruments that can register extremely quiet sounds sent by the human ear, which might help detect and treat hearing problems in babies, reports The New York Times. Besides, according to the report, spider silk-inspired sound systems may enable researchers to pick up on other sounds outside the human ear’s range — such as low-frequency noises, which scientists can use to predict and track the storms.
32.What did the 2022 research focus on
A. Spiders’ silk-producing ability.
B. Spiders’ listening device.
C. Spiders’ sensitivity to the environment.
D. Spiders’ sound-producing mechanisms.
33. What feature might Miles expect microphones to have
A. Being ear-like and adaptable. B. Being flexible and adjustable.
C. Being tiny yet well-performing. D. Being light yet widely available.
34. What does the underlined word “unfeasible” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Unnecessary. B. Flexible. C. Effective. D. Unrealistic.
35. What does the report in The New York Times mainly want to show
A. The practical inspiration of spider silk.
B. Spiders’ ability to detect disasters.
C. Spider silk’s side effects in treating hearing.

When obstacles arrive, persistence can help you move over, around, or through them. The application of persistence to any task is often what sets apart successful people. Spending time each day working towards your goal, for example, increases your chance to succeed. 36 Here are some tips on how to be persistent.
Set a goal. Spend some time thinking about exactly what results you wish to achieve and be as specific as you can. Establish a time frame for achieving each part of your final goal. 37 .Figuring out what drives your goal will help give you purpose in the beginning, and motivation as you move toward your target.
38 Divide the goal by a set of specific tasks that will take a certain amount of time to complete. A 1-hour goal could be broken up into 15-minute segments. Or, divide the task in segments, such as a particular number of files to sort each day.
Accept that failure happens. 39 The difference between them and people who live in fear of failure is that successful people face the failure, learn from it, and use it to spur their next attempt. They persist because they know that failure is simply part of achievement.
Visualize your final achievement to stay motivated. When the going gets tough and you feel like just dropping everything, restore your sense of purpose by remembering your vision. Picture you completing your goal and how that will feel. 40
A. Break the goal down into smaller pieces.
B. The most successful people in life have all failed.
C. Devote a set amount of time each day to your goal.
D. Set your sights on a goal that is reasonable to accomplish.
E. If you feel defeated or down, you might turn to others for help.
F. Imagine the congratulations and reactions of those around you.
G. It’s also important to ignore your opponent and keep going when you’re faced with hardship or failure.

We often try to create magical and unforgettable 45 for someone we love, like wonderful vacations and perfect birthdays, and 46 making every milestone (重大阶段) feel significant. But meaning isn't something 47 by us — it’s something happening in the small, unexpected spaces in between.
Psychologists call this the “peak-end rule”, suggesting that people don’t remember an event by 48 all the
moments, but by recalling the peak moments and the way they ended. The peaks are often the small, 49 highs that make a moment feel special. In my case, 50 a stuffed monkey after 14 failed attempts is the peak moment.
Research shows that 51 isn’t found in once-in-a-lifetime moments, but in small, meaningful ones. It's why a normal night laughing at a funny joke can feel as special as a(n) 52 planned celebration. These moments are effortless. And despite their 53 , they often mean more than the grandest gestures.
Instead of worrying about how to make a magical moment, focus on being 54 for the moments that already are. Maybe life’s greatest moments aren't about focusing on perfection, but the ordinary ones that 55 us by surprise.

Ahmed is a sixth-grade student and his older brother Faraz, who studies at a nearby college while working part-time, frequently sends small gifts home, delighting his younger brother with surprises. However, Ahmed would spend so much time playing with these gifts when alone that he became careless with his studies. This was starting to affect his school performance, causing him to fall behind his classmates.
Recently, Ahmed discovered a passion for music and often imagined how amazing it would be to own a pair of high-quality headphones for his favorite songs. As his birthday drew near, he couldn’t stop thinking about those special headphones. When he excitedly called Faraz to ask for them, Faraz promised him a basketball as the birthday gift, but added that the headphones would only come if Ahmed earned good grades that semester.
Determined to earn his reward, Ahmed put away all distractions and buried himself in study every day. Hard work became his routine and sometimes he even missed meals, worrying his mother enough that she began bringing food to his room. As exams approached, Ahmed became so focused that his birthday nearly slipped his mind.
The day of Ahmed’s birthday finally arrived. Early in the morning, his friends showed up at the door and his parents came from behind with a cake. Together, they all cheered, “Happy Birthday!”
The celebration was wonderful, and Ahmed received many gifts, including the basketball that Faraz had promised and mailed since his college schedule kept him away. While pleased with the basketball, Ahmed couldn't help but wonder about the headphones. Had Faraz hidden them somewhere in the house and planned to give them to him only after the exam results What if his exam results weren't good enough
After the party, curiosity and anxiety overcame Ahmed. He sneaked (溜) into Faraz’s room where his eyes were immediately drawn to the headphone box. Unable to contain his excitement, Ahmed took it to hide in his own room secretly.
Paragraph 1:
Days passed, and Faraz returned home on the day Ahmed’s exam results were announced. _______________
Paragraph 2:
Faraz was disappointed, saying Ahmed had stolen something meant to be his. __________________________
