A Guide to Diving in the Galapagos Islands
Diving in the Galapagos Islands is a dream come true for all divers, often featured high on adventurous divers’ bucket lists. Whether you’re a beginner seeking gentle waters alive with marine (海洋的) life, or an experienced diver thirsty for exciting encounters, the Galapagos Islands always has something extraordinary to offer.
The Best Time for Diving
Galpagos is a year-round destination. When it comes to diving, the best time to see unique animals is during the dry season, from June to November. During this period, waters are cooler, offering enhanced visibility and increased opportunities to witness hammerhead sharks and turtles, among others.
Essential Equipment
Mask, snorkel, and fins provide clear vision underwater and enable you to move swiftly through the water. Wetsuit and hood keep you warm and comfortable from cold waters. The regulator is a vital device that connects to the air tank, allowing you to breathe effortlessly underwater while reducing the air’s intense pressure. The dive computer tracks the depth, dive time, and decompression (减压) limits.
Levels of difficulty
Beginner dives are ideal for newcomers, which offer calm waters, minimal currents, an eye-opening view of biodiversity and depths under 12 meters. Intermediate dives are suitable for divers confident in open waters, reaching depths of up to 30 meters. Advanced dives feature strong currents, limited visibility, and depths beyond 30 meters, and adventurous spirit is a must.
Top Dive Sites Recommended
Kicker Rock — Encounter eagle rays and vibrant schools of fish.
Santa Fe — Enjoy crystal-clear waters and playful sea lions.
North Seymour — Explore a vast sandy bottom at 15 meters.
Mosquera — Brave rough waters and spot black-tip reef sharks.

When I was a little girl, I liked drawing, freely and joyously making marks on the walls at home. In primary school, I learned to write using chalks. Writing seemed to be another form of drawing. I shaped individual letters into repeating lines, which were abstract forms, delightful but meaningless patterns.
In secondary school art was my favourite subject. Since I loved it so much I thought I was good at it. For the art standardized (标准化) exam I had to present an oil painting. I found it difficult, but still hoped to pass. I failed, with a low grade. I’d been over-confident. Now I’d been declared talentless.
But other channels of creativity stayed open: I went on writing poems and stories. Still, I went to exhibitions often. I continued my habitual drawing, which I now characterised as childish doodling (乱画). In my 30s, I made painter friends and learned new ways of looking at art. However, I couldn’t let myself have a go at actually doing it. Though these new friends were abstract painters using oil paints, or were printmakers or sculptors, I took oil painting as the taboo (禁忌) high form I wasn’t allowed to practice.
One night, in my early 40s, I dreamed that a big woman in red approached me, handed me a bag of paints, and told me to start painting. The dream felt so convincing that it shook me. It was a form of energy, giving me back something I’d lost. Accordingly, I started by experimenting with water colours. Finally, I bought some oil paints.
Although I have enjoyed breaking my decades-long taboo about working with oil paints, I have discovered I now prefer chalks and ink. I let my line drawings turn into cartoons I send to friends. It all feels free and easy. Un-anxious. This time around, I can accept my limitations but keep going.
Becoming a successful painter calls for being determined. I realised I was always afraid of wanting too much. That dream reminded me that those fears and desires could encourage me to take risks and make experiments.
4. What did the author think of her drawing before the standardised exam
A. Discouraging. B. Meaningless. C. Satisfying. D. Empowering.
5. In her 30s, the author ______.
A. avoided oil painting practice B. searched for a painting career
C. took oil painting seriously D. began water colours as a hobby
6. What attracted the author to oil paintings at last
A. Her ambition. B. Her dream. C. Her grade. D. Her taboo.
7. What can we learn from this passage
A. Practice makes perfect. B. It never rains but it pours.
C. Dreams are the reflections of realities. D. Strong will can move mountains.

A new study led by PhD candidate Ashley Kim and Professor James Nieh has found that artificial light is not only a health concern for humans, it also affects the sleep patterns of honeybees and poses a threat to their essential role as pollinators (传粉者).
“Our research shows just how sensitive honeybees are to changes in their environment, particularly to something as seemingly harmless as artificial light,” said. Kim of the study: “By disturbing their sleep patterns, we see clear evidence of reduced sleep periods. This raises significant concerns, not only for bee health but also for the health of ecosystems that depend on them for pollination.”
Honeybees generally prefer to nest in dark environments, although a small-amount of light can enter from the entrance. Sleeping bees typically remain immobile but exhibit certain movements if disturbed by nestmates.
Like us, when bees experience a poor night’s sleep, problems in behavior and function emerge. Sleep is crucial for the health and fitness of groups of bees since they depend on a complicated system of communication known as the “waggle dance” that informs nestmates about the location of food sources in the environment. Bees dance more poorly and therefore do not communicate as well if they do not get enough sleep.
Through a series of experiments, researchers compared groups of bees that underwent normal sleep in the dark with others that were subjected to continuous artificial light. The results clearly showed that prolonged (长期的) exposure to light significantly affected the sleep pattern of honeybees, leading to bad behaviors.
Among the details described in the paper, bees exposed to continuous light slept less and were more frequently disturbed by other bees compared to those kept in normal darkness. Also, bees exposed to continuous light exhibited a preference for darker areas within their experimental cages.
“Understanding the factors that affect bee health, such as light pollution, is essential for developing strategies to protect pollinator populations. With artificial light increasing, this research throws light on how such disturbances may be harming pollinators.” said Nieh.
8. What effect does artificial light have on bees
A. Changing the color of bees. B. Reducing the number of bees.
C. Making bees less sensitive. D. Shortening bees’ sleep time.
9. What can we infer about bees from paragraph 4
A. Sleep is no light matter for bees. B. Bees dance to show the food amount.
C. It is easy for bees to have sleep problems. D. Bees have the same sleep habits as humans.
10. What did researchers find in their experiments
A. Long sleep leads to bees’ bad behavior. B. Sleeping bees remain motionless completely.
C. Bees under continuous light like darker places. D. Honeybees prefer to nest in bright environments.
11. What is mainly talked about in the text
A. The variety of bees’ sleep pattern. B. The factors that affect bees’ sleep.
C. The harm of artificial light on bees. D. The link between pollinators and ecosystems.

Following its move into podcasting (播客) two years ago, streaming platform Spotify started an audiobook (有声书) business. Though it has yet to start making its own recordings, last autumn it made a deal for 200,000 audiobooks to be available to its VIP users.
Not to be beaten, Amazon-owned Audible, which had been used to being the market leader, upped its game, hiring Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes to record multi-voice versions (版本 ) of Dickens’ novels Oliver Twist and David Copperfield, and announcing last month that it had reached an agreement for a recording of J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, voiced by more than 100 actors and featuring a “groundbreaking new soundscape”.
Dramatised audiobooks are not an entirely new phenomenon. The use of multiple voices made them accessible to readers who might not have had the patience for the written versions. For example, George Saunders’s Lincoln in the Bardo, which surrounded the dead son of Abraham Lincoln with a group of spirit voices, became a great game of “spot the big name”.
Even single-voice readings can significantly change literature in which style is at the heart. Lucy Ellmann’s hit Ducks, Newburyport, is a case in point: a thousand-page stream of an Ohio woman’s thoughts, written in a single sentence. It unfolds on audio as a 45-hour monologue (独白), which is not the same thing at all, if only because an actor needs to breathe.
To say that audio versions are different does not mean they are not as good as printed texts as brain scans (扫描) have shown that they excite the same parts of the brain. Additionally, listening to stories makes hearts beat stronger than watching them, according to a latest study. For people with dyslexia (阅读障碍), they can even be a lifeline — as they can be for those who do not have time for, or the habit of, reading books.
So while we celebrate what audiobooks have in common with their printed versions — both enable the brain to create its own pictures in a world where pre-produced images too often do all the work for us — we should also recognize that they are translations into a different medium, even when read by the authors themselves. What is certain is that there is room for both.
12. What strategy did Audible use to maintain its market leader position
A. Creating its own prize-winning audiobook content.
B. Focusing on single-voice audiobook productions.
C. Offering low-priced audiobooks to its new customers.
D. Inviting a well-known director to record classic novels.
13. How does the author present the effects of different versions of audiobooks
A. By giving examples. B. By sharing readers’ experiences.
C By presenting data. D. By referring to experts’ words.
14. What is the purpose of the last but one paragraph
A. To show the advantages of audiobooks.
B. To compare audiobooks with printed texts.
C. To inform readers of findings about audiobooks.
D. To stress audiobooks’ value in treating dyslexia.
15. What is the author’s view on the future of audiobooks and printed texts
A. It depends on the choices of readers.
B. Both of them hold the future of reading.
C Audiobook popularity is not expected to last.
D. Audiobooks will eventually replace printed texts.

Kathy's family vacation to the beach was usually the highlight of her summer. This year, however, her parents announced a new rule: no phones for the entire week.
“But my friends will be expecting updates about the trip, "Kathy complained. Kathy's mom gave her a serious look. Unwillingly, Kathy handed her phone over and her mom locked it away.
The drive to the beach house took most of the day. As they turned off the highway onto country back roads, the clouds darkened. Rain started to pour. "Even more beautiful in the rain," her mother said. " What do you think, Kathy " Kathy glared at her mom. "Beautiful, "she muttered.
That night after dinner, Kathy wandered into the kitchen, where her father was washing dishes. She gave her father a loving look and said in her sweetest voice, "Couldn’t I have my phone back, just for one second Just so I can tell everyone what an amazing time I'm having ”
“Can't, "he said. "It's not here. Remember " Kathy was very annoyed. Having nothing better to do, she examined the dusty bookcase in the living room. The books looked as dull as the weather. On the top shelf, however, she spotted a puzzle. She took it, emptied the pieces on the table, and began to sort them.
After what seemed like a few minutes, she looked up. It was past ten o'clock. She had been working for almost two hours! She yawned. The puzzle was less than half done, but she was exhausted. So, she went to bed.
When Kathy awoke the next morning, she jumped out of bed and threw open the curtains. A blazing sun was rising over the blue ocean. The sky was cloudless. The scene reminded Kathy of a photo that her friend betty had recently sent her.
This view was even better. It would leave everyone speechless. Kathy dashed to her bedside table and reached for her phone. But there was nothing there. She sighed. Still, she wandered in front of the window, admiring the sunrise.

【答案】Dear Michael,
Glad to share how AI benefits our classes. Teachers use AI-powered platforms to assign customized tasks, like grammar drills or reading comprehension tailored to each student’s level. Interactive tools analyze our performance instantly, highlighting weak points. Students also leverage AI translation apps during language learning and virtual labs for science experiments.
I believe AI makes learning efficient and personalized. It saves teachers’ time on repetitive tasks, allowing them to focus on guiding us. However, we must use it wisely to avoid over-dependence.
What’s AI’s role in your school Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

【47题答案】
【答案】After a quick breakfast, Kathy headed to the beach. Under no circumstances had Kathy expected the scenery to be so spectacular! With the sea wind blowing against her face, Kathy totally lost herself in the stunning views. After half an hour's leisure walk along the beach, Kathy returned to the house. “How do I spend the rest of the day ” Kathy murmured to herself. Suddenly, the unfinished puzzle caught her attention. She felt a little excited and buried herself in it once again. Every time the shapes met, Kathy was overwhelmed with happiness. Soon, all that were left were a few gaps. She quickly put the remaining pieces into place. The puzzle was completed!
Appreciating the finished puzzle, she realized she hadn’t thought of her cellphone for hours. Trying to preserve the image in her mind, she quietly started taking it apart rather than taking pictures to update about the trip. That, she thought, was just for me. Without the distractions from her cellphone, she found herself engaged in story sharing session with mom and daddy willingly. They spent a high-quality family time together. On arriving home, mom gave her cellphone back. This time, however, she had no intention to share but to keep all the great memories in her mind. (189 words)
