Do you know that one-third of the food we eat every day gets thrown away, while one in nine people around the world goes hungry It takes about 3, 072 hours to produce a single grain (单粒) of rice, yet it only takes a second to waste it. In October, students from Beijing No. 8 Middle School visited an exhibition center that showed how to recycle kitchen waste.
They saw how kitchen waste, such as fruit peels and leftovers, could be turned into something useful. “First, people collect the kitchen waste and then crush (压碎) it. After that, they take out the solid (固体的) part and break it down before turning it into a soil conditioner (土壤调理剂),” 13-year-old Lu Zichen said. He added that this conditioner can help improve the quality of the soil.
The students also learned how to make liquid fertilizer (液体肥料) from kitchen waste. This fertilizer helps plants grow. Qi Yiming, 13, even tried making it himself. “It’s quite simple. First, you place the kitchen waste into a container. Then you add microbial agents (微生物菌剂), and let it sit for a few days to get the fertilizer,” Qi explained. “I am so glad to use the chemical knowledge I learned to make liquid fertilizer myself. It is beneficial in daily life. It is a wonderful experience.”

When you look up at the night sky, what do you see 80% of people around the world see nothing but skylow (天光,人为白昼现象). This man - made brightening of the sky masks the stars.
The night sky has played an important role in human life for thousands of years. Ancient people named the constellations (星座). Around the same time, Polynesian(波西尼亚) sailors used the sun and stars to sail on the sea in the correct direction. Later, the Maya civilization (文明) used the position of the stars to predict the changing of the seasons.
But today, few people are able to see sky full of stars. So what happened
Light pollution is the reason. When man - made light enters into the night sky, it hides the stars. This excess (过多的) light comes from streetlights, office buildings, stores, flashing billboards, etc.
Of course, people in modern societies need to light the night. Nighttime driving, walking, working, exercising, and more are all safer with man - made outdoor lighting. However, too much light at night can be harmful. It masks the stars and disturbs our natural sleep patterns, causing greater risk of cancer and heart disease.
Light pollution can be greatly reduced (减少) with a few simple actions. The first is to stop wasting light. Outdoor lights can be covered so that the light shines down to the ground only where it’s needed. People can be more careful about using lights only when and where they are necessary. Besides, people can choose light bulbs (灯泡) with the smallest effective amount of brightness. Most bright white lights, including LEDs, give off a large amount of shorter - wavelength (波长较短的) blue light, which brightens the sky more than any other color of light. Choosing light bulbs with longer - wavelength light in yellow or orange can help prevent harmful light pollution.
20.By studying the night sky full of stars, ancient peoples did a lot except ________.

The Briton asked, “It’s common to tip 10 percent, right ”
The American man cried, “Oh, I was planning to leave 20 percent!”
The Chinese woman asked, “What’s a tip ”
Although it is not a tradition to tip in China, tipping is a big deal in the United States. There, it is common to tip about 15 to 20 percent of the bill.
Usually, people give tips to a waiter or waitress. The US tops the list of tipping-waiters and waitresses are expecting to get 15-20 percent of the bill. So if you order $100 in food, you are expected to pay your waiter at least $15, making your payment $115 in all.
Why is this Many waiters and waitresses get paid below the US minimum wage (最低工资), and tips make up for that. Some states pay their servers only $2.13 per hour.
It is not just for waiters, either. Hotel workers, hairdressers and taxi drivers also expect tips.

Many cities around the world have closed some streets to cars to make more outdoor space for people to enjoy. Paris in France plans to ban (禁止) private (私人的) cars from the heart of the city. The ban is going to take more than 100, 000 cars off the roads each day.
Car-free streets have become a place for people to play, shop and listen to live music. Many people want more car-free streets, but others get worried. What do you think Should cities have car-free streets
Yes—more outdoor space is always better
Opening up car-free streets can make more outdoor space for people to get outside and enjoy life. Shops and restaurants on car-free streets benefit (得益) from foot traffic. And slow streets help new businesses, such as food trucks, to develop (发展) in the area. Also, cars cause air and noise pollution. Closing streets to cars will make people take buses or ride bikes instead. It’s safer and better for everyone.
No—car-free streets cause other problems
Car-free streets cause traffic problems on nearby roadways. That makes it harder for people to go about their daily lives. Also, businesses on open streets can get into trouble because foot traffic doesn’t always mean more sales. They could lose customers (顾客) who want to drive to shops. And even when streets are car-free, there are usually still other vehicles like bikes. People, especially kids, may not be looking out for these vehicles. That could put them in danger.

In most places of the world, a five-day work week is common. But in some places, people are trying carrying out the idea of paying workers the same money for working just four days a week.
The idea isn’t new, but businesses have been slow to try it. They may be worried about getting less work for their money. But the results of a last year’s test, run by the University of Cambridge, suggest the move may be good for both businesses and workers.
Last June, 61UK companies agreed to try the four-day work week when paying their workers the same money. In return, they asked their workers to try to do as much in four days as they usually did in five. The test ran for six months, and turned out to be good for most businesses. During the test, some companies cut meetings, or made sure they were shorter. Others used technology to help workers get more done quickly. Some companies created a “focus time ” so workers could work on just one thing without being interrupted (打扰). Therefore, workers worked faster and better. Besides, the companies made more money.
Most of the workers were satisfied with the four-day work week. Some people said they were able to get more training and take care of things at home. “Thank you for your email. I have left to follow my dream of knitting (编织) sweaters for penguins and no longer work for the School of Economics. I will be out of office…until my penguin friends are happy.” This is a part of an email received by a Chinese student studying in the UK from her teacher, which has recently become popular online.
You may find this email surprising, but knitting sweaters for penguins is a real act of kindness. The idea was started by the Penguin Foundation (基金会) and Phillip Island Nature Parks in Australia.
The project began due to a serious oil spill (泄漏) near Phillip Island in the late 1990s. During that time, the number and health of baby penguins dropped rapidly. When little penguins became covered in oil, they tried to clean themselves with their beaks (喙), but eating the oil could be deadly. The oil also made it difficult for them to swim or hunt for food.
To solve this problem, the foundation asked knitters worldwide to make sweaters for affected (受影响的) penguins. These sweaters could keep the penguins warm during the cleaning process and stop them from eating the oil.
★ Later events continued to show how helpful this solution could be. In 2001, there was another oil spill near Phillip Island. Thanks to the sweaters, 96 percent of the affected penguins were successfully saved.
However, some people have questioned the idea of animals wearing human-made clothing. Certain bird protection groups have expressed worries that these sweaters might put more stress on the penguins’ bodies. The foundation explained that the sweaters were only a short-term way and will not be used when the penguins stay healthy.
To ensure the penguins are protected and wearing appropriate clothes, the foundation has provided detailed instructions for knitters. For example, the total length of the finished sweater should be no more than 18 cm, the width across the body no more than 12 cm and the width of the bottom opening no more than 11 cm.

Living in China, I often cannot imagine how active and busy some of the elderly are. Whether singing opera, dancing or even practicing tai chi, China elderly communities (社区) enjoy great outdoor social activities. It continues to surprise me. I wish that were more common for elderly communities back in the UK.
My grandma lives in a nursing home in England. While she plays bingo, a game, and enjoys concerts once in a while, few activities get her up on her feet and truly communicate with others. She hardly ever goes outside. This situation is common for many of the elderly in the UK. It’s just not part of the culture, and I think that’s a shame. Staying active in social activities is so important for health, and it is something elderly communities in China clearly value (珍视). What’s more, it’s completely inexpensive.
According to an expert Judith Farquhar, it’s popular for the elderly in China to dance and exercise in public parks or squares. “For these people, dancing and other healthy activities are smart ways to save money.” Farquhar said, “Dancing also helps them fight against loneliness in old age.”
Many elderly people are feeling really lonely. I hope the British government can build more active social communities than before. The future elderly communities in the UK may learn from the elderly people in China. I’d love to see group of British grandmas and grandpas enjoy their old age and do active things together to stay happy and healthy.

People usually feel excited when they go on vacation. But most people feel blue when coming home after travelling. And this feeling is called post-vacation blues. If you feel blue after travelling, here are some ways to help you get out of this bad feeling.
Give yourself a week to relax first. You don’t need to think what to do next and just be relaxed. You can show your pet some love if you have one, watch your favourite TV shows or listen to relaxing music.
After a week. do something useful and keep yourself busy For example, when I came back from Europe, 1felt blue because I didn’t have a job and was living with my parents. So I decided to find a job and make myself busy. If you don’t need a job, just try something like painting your room or tidying your house. You can also do exercise, learn to cook, visit your friends and just do anything you want!
It’s also a good idea to make a photo book and plan you next trip. Your photos taken on vacation help you remember the good times you had. And you can plan to take another trip. Just like Elbert Hubbard said, “No man needs a vacation so much as the man who has just had one.”

In 2024, Yantian District Library worked with the Vanke Foundation (万科公益基金) to start the Growth Library project. The idea behind it is that “a library is like a living thing and can change as time passes”.
Guided by this idea, the project brings together different social resources. It also raises the thought that “everything can be read”, changing the library into a borderless green space and a driving force for community sustainability (可持续性).
The library covers an area of 21 square kilometers. It serves about 20,000-local people and attracts over 20 million visitors every year. More importantly, it helps the community develop in a sustainable way.

My name is Will Charouhis. My hometown is Miami, in the U.S. state of Florida. The city is known for its warm weather and many beautiful beaches. It’s very popular with tourists. However, scientists say it’s in trouble. Because of climate change (气候变化), the sea level is rising. As a coastal city, Miami will suffer badly. By 2070, the city will probably be under two feet of water.
Life will be hard then. I know this because I once experienced the effects of climate change. It was September 2017. Hurricane Irma (飓风“厄玛”) hit Florida. It caused serious flooding in Miami. My city was almost completely under water. For days, I thought about what I could do. How could I help to prevent this from happening again
I became interested in mangroves. These trees grow in or near water. They are good at taking in greenhouse gases from the air. They can also protect coastal cities against rising seas. I started the “A Million Mangroves” project. I ask people to help protect mangroves.
Three years ago, the COVID-19 pandemic (疾病大流行) shut down the world. I couldn’t go to school. Neither could I spend time with my friends indoors. But I was able to spend months working along Florida’s coastlines. I planted more than six miles of new mangroves.
I’ll continue to work hands-on and teach people about the importance of protecting trees. It’s useless to just be afraid of climate change. Turn your tear into action. We can all do something to save our planet.

Cold air swept across the north part of China in the first week of November. At the same time, a global (全球的) meeting on climate change was held in Scotland. There, leaders around the world tried to control global warming.
Why are we experiencing such a cold winter on a warming planet The cold winter and global warming, two different facts, are not contradictory (矛盾的).
Because of the warming climate, the temperature in winter in China has risen by 0.41℃ every ten years since (自从) 1961. But in some places, it has also been pretty low.
Global warming has changed Earth’s air circulation (循环) and the weather. For example, in October, La Nina affected China. The strong winds from the Pacific Ocean caused it. It brought more cold air to China. Another reason for the cold weather is the warming Arctic (北极). It is warming almost three times as fast as any other places on Earth. As a result, it pushed more super cold waves to the south, which brought freezing temperatures to China.
Will the winter be much colder It’s reported that a cold winter is likely. Northern China will probably see more snow, and southern China will see less rain.
90.Why did the leaders from the world come to Scotland to have a meeting

Everyone knows that climate change is a big problem for the Earth. But as we go about our everyday lives, we often forget about it. In fact, climate change is affecting some of our favorite foods and drinks, and it might change our eating and drinking habits soon.
Many people start their day with a cup of coffee, but rising (升高的) temperatures may make them give up their habit. Warmer weather is making it easier for fungus (真菌) to spread (传播) among coffee plants and some areas are becoming too hot for the plants to grow in. What’s more, changing to tea won’t help anything, either because like coffee plants, tea plants don’t grow well in hot weather. It can change how tea tastes and how much we can get in.
Chocolate is endangered, too! Cocoa plants are important for chocolate-making. But the highest temperature that cocoa plants can grow in is around 32℃. If it keeps getting hotter, we could lose them by the year 2050.
Climate change also affects important crops (农作物) like wheat, corn, and rice. A lot of people in the world eat these foods to live. But these crops are in danger because of rising temperatures.
These days, farmers and scientists are working together to grow new crops that need less water and can grow better in changing weather. Some of them are successful, but we must also protect the environment. If we don’t stop climate change, we may not have enough food to eat in the future.

Li is an eighth grader from Qingliu, Fujian. Every weekend, she takes the C875 Fuxing train to her village and then back to school. For nearly 300 students like her in Qingliu, the Fuxing train is like their “school bus”.
Taking the Fuxing train is a special experience. Li said, “In the past, I had to take a long bus ride. It used to take an hour and a half. Sometimes I felt sick. Now, the train is fast and comfortable. It only takes about 20 minutes. The tickets are also very cheap.”

To make the journey easier for students, schools and the train station work together. Schools send the number of students who need to travel each week, and the train station helps them buy tickets and organize (组织) boarding (上车). There are even reading areas on the train. Since Qingliu Station is not very close to schools, there are six bus routes (路线) that run between the schools and the train station.
