Frank, my new neighbor, is a newcomer to our city. Last weekend, I showed him around the neighborhood
to help him settle in (习惯新居). We visited the nearby metro stations, shopping malls, restaurants and hospital.
Finally, we passed by a park. “It looks inviting, doesn’t it ” Frank asked. “Shall we take a walk through it ”
We were talking about Jiyang Park. It lies quietly to the west of my neighborhood. It’s not very big. It is
actually called city pocket park. Honestly, I had never given it much attention before. Our walk that day made me
see it in a new light.
As soon as we passed through the gate, an azalea (杜鹃) garden came into view. All the flowers were fully

rain had just stopped, and a few drops of water were still dancing on the flowers. It was hard not to want to reach
for our phones and take some pictures.
As we walked on, we saw some birds. Each one was singing a different song. Maybe they were talking to
us: “Good morning! Nice to meet you!”
City pocket parks have been in the news recently. Scientists say that a 20-minute walk in a park is enough

It seems like technology is puters and smart phones are at the center of almost everything
we do. They constantly (持续地) require our attention. We text our friends with them during the day, sleep with
them by our beds and check our messages as soon as we wake up.
In the future, technology will no longer be interrupting (打扰) us all the time. Instead we will use calm
technology which was first developed by scientist Mark Weiser in the 1970s. In his opinion, calm technology
works quietly but constantly. We know it is there, but we don’t pay much attention to it. According to Mark, the
best technology should be invisible (隐形的) and let you live your life.
We already use many different types of calm technology in our everyday lives. Do you have a smoke alarm
in your house That smoke alarm is always there, checking the air for smoke and quietly keeping you safe. It only
reminds you it’s there when you’ve burnt your bread! Or there may be lights in your home or school. When
somebody passes in front of their sensors (传 感 器 ), the lights turn on. You don’t think about this type of
technology until you see the light go on.
In the future, we can imagine our houses will use calm technology to open the curtains for us in the
morning, to turn down the heat when we leave, or even to choose the best music for our mood (心情). The minute
we walk through the door, our house will respond (回应) by turning on the lights and music, and perhaps even

Finally, we passed by a park. “It looks inviting, doesn’t it ” Frank asked. “Shall we take a walk through it ”

As soon as we passed through the gate, an azalea (杜鹃) garden came into view. All the flowers were fully
in bloom (盛开). As we walked along the stone path, our eyes were greeted with many different kinds of red. The
rain had just stopped, and a few drops of water were still dancing on the flowers. It was hard not to want to reach
for our phones and take some pictures.
As we walked on, we saw some birds. Each one was singing a different song. Maybe they were talking to
us: “Good morning! Nice to meet you!”

The minute
we walk through the door, our house will respond (回应) by turning on the lights and music, and perhaps even
starting to prepare our dinner!
