Pumpkin(南瓜) carving at Halloween is a family tradition. We visit a local farm every October. In the pumpkin field,I compete with my three brothers and sister to seek out the biggest pumpkin. My dad has a rule that we have to carry our pumpkins back home, and as the eldest child I have an advantage—I carried an 85-pounder back last year.
This year,it was hard to tell whether my prize or the one chosen by my 14-year-old brother,Jason, was the winner.Unfortunately we forgot to weigh them before taking out their insides, but I was determined to prove my point. All of us were hard at work at the kitchen table, with my mum filming the annual event.I’m unsure now why I thought forcing my head inside the pumpkin would settle the matter, but it seemed to make perfect sense at the time.
With the pumpkin resting on the table, hole uppermost,I bent over and pressed my head against the opening. At first I got jammed just above my eyes and then,as I went on with my task, unwilling to quit,my nose briefly prevented entry. Finally I managed to put my whole head into it,like a cork(软木塞) forced into a bottle.I was able to straighten up with the huge pumpkin resting on my shoulders.
My excitement was short-lived.The pumpkin was heavy.“I’m going to set it down, now,” I said, and with Jason helping to support its weight,I bent back over the table to give it somewhere to rest.It was only when I
tried to remove my head that I realised getting out was going to be less straightforward than getting in.When I pulled hard,my nose got in the way.I got into a panic as I pressed firmly against the table and moved my head around trying to find the right angle, but it was no use.“I can’t get it out!” I shouted,my voice sounding unnaturally loud in the enclosed space.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
I was stuck for five or six minutes though it felt much longer.

During the process, the voices from outside were oddly calm.My mum was amused, suggesting “Don’t use up all your oxygen”.My smallest brother was singing a song though I couldn’t make out.Fortunately,my dad came to respond to my shout. He helped pull my head hard and skillfully. Finally,I was rescued with messy hair and a red nose, and it was only then that I realised my mum had been filming the whole time. And she said she was going to upload the video online.
That video was posted the day before Halloween.

To our surprise,by the end of that day it had over 1,000 views.Next morning,we got 5 am calls from local media—the video started racking up hundreds of thousands of views. When Jason and I went on a youth camp,I was recognised by children I’d never met.The pumpkin also became a minor celebrity.
(1)How did I feel then?
(2)How did others feel?
(3)Who came to help me?
(4)How did he help me?
(5)What did mother do then?
(1)What influence did it bring?
(2)How many views did it cause?
(3)How did it influence my brother and me?
Trudy was a child of the British Columbia Care System.
In our home, we already had a child of our own, Margaret, who was thirteen. Our friends thought we were mad to take on another teenage child.
That afternoon, Trudy arrived, She stepped into the front hall and clung to the walls. The first thing that came to my mind was that she looked like a hunted animal. Margaret grabbed her hand and said proudly: “Come and see your room. I helped make your bed.” Trudy pulled back, but didn’t let go of her hand.
At this point, I stepped towards her and said, “Welcome to our home, Trudy.” Her eyes darted back and forth like a creature looking for a way out. This had been her fifth foster(领养) home since she was eleven. No wonder she was afraid. I put my arms around her and told her she would be safe with us.
Trudy was very quiet but pleasant and the two kids got on along well. One day, I took Margaret shopping for a new winter coat, and Trudy came too. Trudy had picked out a jacket that she liked. She walked up to Margaret, modelling the jacket, and sighed, “Isn’t it beautiful?” Margaret agreed as they both looked in the mirror. Replacing the jacket on the rack, she rejoined Margaret.
While they were busy, I quietly asked the salesperson to wrap up the jacket that Trudy had tried on. We bought the coat that Margaret had loved, and the salesperson had placed the parcel containing Trudy’s coat where the girls couldn’t see it.
When we arrived home, Margaret proudly modelled her new coat. Trudy was complimenting on her choice. I chose that moment to say, “Trudy, would you please go out and bring in the parcel I left in the car?”

She happily headed for the parcel and when she returned, she laid it on the table. ________________________________________________________

“Would you please open the parcel and rip paper for me?” Trudy reached out to touch the jacket. Her hand recoiled as if she had touched something hostile.I walked over to her, putting my arms around her.I took Trudy’s face in my hands, asking, “Isn’t this the jacket you were trying on?” At that moment, Trudy started sobbing.
“In all my life, no one has ever bought me a beautiful jacket like this. Why did you do this?” She held the jacket and stared at it with disbelief. My voice shook as I managed to say, “Because you deserve it.”
I left and went to my room so she would not see my watery eyes.

My heart ached for this child who didn’t feel she was worthy of a coat.As I was sitting there deep in thought, Margaret stepped forward, saying “Mum, thank you for bringing Trudy into our home.We hope we can keep her forever.” My eyes welled up with tears. As I gathered my children to me, they began to say, “We love you, Mum.” I looked at the faces of my treasures and whispered, “I love you too.Guess who’s the luckiest mother in the world.”
