Last year, I went to Los Angeles for a holiday after I won the Vans US Open of Surfing Championship. It was a sunny day, with a blue, cloudless sky over a calm sea. I went outside and climbed up onto the roof for a break. I sat and watched people swimming in the sea. But then, as I looked in the distance, I saw a series of three or four big waves heading toward the shore. I’d seen these mini-tsunamis(海啸) many times before.
They were heading at speed towards the swimming area. Most people knew to look out for them, but from the screams that started coming from the beach, I could tell someone was in trouble.
Without thinking, I ran down into the street, grabbing my bodyboard(冲浪板) on the way. I shouted at a stranger to call the lifeguard. My neighbour Tom had heard the screaming as well and was also outside with his bodyboard, so together we rushed to the steps that led down to the beach.
When we got down there, we discovered the waves had pulled two boys into the open sea.I knew that the nearest boat would take at least 30 minutes to reach us. I wasn’t used to this sort of emergency—I’d never been trained as a lifeguard—but I didn’t think twice about trying to save them. I suppose in a way I wanted to impress everyone; at 19, a deal like that can seem like a good opportunity to show off.
Tom and I dived into the water. It took us 10 minutes to locate them. When we finally reached them, they were barely able to stay afloat(漂浮的), their heads bobbing up and down in the water. We could tell they were still alive from their small breaths but it was clear they wouldn’t have been able to stay there much longer. Tom and I held the boys and pulled them over our boards.

We had to wait. We eagerly hoping for the arrival of the saving boat. The wild wind blew and the freezing sea water clapped our bodies continuously. 30 minutes seemed much longer as we just helplessly floated on the boundless sea. After a long time, a light spot appeared in the distance! We waved our hands and yelled out for help. The boat finally reached us and took all of us back to the shore. The two children were immediately sent to the nearest hospital.
When we arrived at the hospital, the two kids were in better condition.

Picturing what the merry scene would be, relief lay in my heart and happiness etched on my face. The next morning, all the people I met smiled to me and could not stop praising me. It seemed like a good opportunity to show myself off, but I didn’t mean to. In fact, I was ashamed I had thought about it. It occurred to me that helping others was priceless and everyone should be a “lifeguard”.

A Fortunate Escape
“Truth or Dare, Ben?” Max questioned. Max, Ben and I were walking home together while I took small bites of the beef burger I had grabbed from a shop nearby. “Truth or Dare” was a game we usually
played to amuse ourselves on the lengthy, boring journey home. Ben wanted a dare. “Well, Ben, I dare you to carry my bag all the way home!” Max commanded as we laughed at poor Ben’s trouble.
As Ben pulled the heavy bag up his shoulder and adjusted the bag straps, he noticed that Max’s bag was partially open. When he hurriedly put it on his back, an object flew out of the bag, and over the fence of our neighbour’s house.
“Oh, no,” Max cried. “I think that was my English assignment.” Stretching his hand out and trying to crawl(爬) under the fence to save the paper, Ben found that it was just out of reach.
“Well, I guess I’ll just have to climb over the fence to get it,” Ben said. He was barely able to climb up, using the small gaps in the wooden fence as handholds as the fence was nearly as tall as him (which was not very tall), and low enough for something to be thrown over it. Sliding down the fence, Ben grabbed the valued piece of paper, complaining about injured dignity. Just then, a loud and frightening bark cut his words short.
“Woof, Woof!” Our neighbour, Mr Mason, owned a German shepherd (kind of dog), well-known for its fierceness, which guarded the
house. It was something we had overlooked, too focused on bringing back Max’s assignment. Ben’s legs trembled like jelly and his face turned a deathly white as the German shepherd advanced slowly on him like a wolf moving towards its target.

Ben backed up against the fence, attempting to climb up, but a loud howl stopped him in his tracks. Recovering from the shock, I anxiously searched my mind for an idea about how I could assist Ben. Ben was in danger of being attacked by Mr Mason’s ferocious dog. Dropping everything, I searched my bag for something to help Ben.
Just then I caught sight of my half-eaten burger on the path.___________

I had dropped
it in panic. Dogs love beef! There was no time to waste. Grabbing it from the pavement, I used all my strength to throw it over the fence, hitting the German shepherd directly on the neck. Thankfully, the dog turned its head away from Ben, who swiftly regained his calm and climbed over the fence. The three of us made our way home again, agreeing that it was a fortunate escape.

(2024云南曲靖一模)I was working as a supervisor in a small, rural hospital on a bitter cold Midwestern winter in 1992. I wasn’t even supposed to be working the evening shift, but had agreed to swap with a colleague who needed the night off. Among my many duties was to assist in the emergency room(ER) if our ER nurse needed help. Suddenly, my pager(寻呼机) echoed down the hallway that quiet evening.
“I need your help now,” a nurse in ER said urgently. “We have an ambulance out on a little boy. Not many details, but it doesn’t sound good. He was found outside in a snow bank, and the first responders have started CPR.” My heart sank. It was thirty degrees below zero with windchill. The child didn’t have a chance.
I entered the emergency room. The ambulance was just pulling up, and when the gurney(轮床) rolled into the ER, it was met with dead silence. CPR was in progress. The blond boy lay lifeless and pale with little hands frozen so solid. Because of the circumstances, we were obligated to
continue CPR until his core body temperature was raised. No one in the room seemed to hold any hope of bringing back this little boy.
The next hour passed quickly as many ways were conducted to warm him up. I stood silently over him, tears running down my cheeks, as I prayed silently for him and his family. I couldn’t even help understanding the pain his parents were experiencing.
He was the same age as my little boy, with the same beautiful blue eyes and blond hair. I thought of how much I loved my son and tried to remember the last time I told him I loved him so. What if he died tonight? Would he die knowing how much I loved him? I realised, watching a group of doctors and nurses desperately trying to do the impossible, that I hadn’t even hugged him before leaving for work. And I deeply regretted that now.

Watching the scene, I made a promise to myself that night.

A promise to never again let a day go by when I didn’t hug my son and tell him that I loved him.He would never leave this Earth without knowing how much I loved him.It no longer mattered if he returned my love or if he pushed me away.I just wanted him to be healthy and grow up in an environment surrounded by love.In the months and years that followed, I kept my promise. He has done very well and is today a very happy, loving little boy.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My five-year-old daughter Ruthie seemed very small standing at the base of the huge rock-climbing wall as a young employee double-checked her equipment. It was our second time at this indoor crowded climbing gym. On our first visit, Ruthie had begged my husband and me to let her try climbing the wall, but I denied her, afraid that she was undersized.
But life had dramatically changed since then. After receiving a cancer diagnosis(诊断), I felt that my life was too short to deny her a chance. I stood outside the waiting area, watching the employee attach Ruthie to a safety rope. Then he gave her a thumbs-up sign, and my daughter began climbing!
With that rope, she couldn’t possibly fall. She might slip, but she wouldn’t fall. I was surprised at how she did that so easily and joyfully. “If my cancer is the rock wall, I want to be Ruthie,” I thought.
When she touched the ground again, I leaned over the low fence and asked, “How do you do that?”
“I just trust the rope. It’s very easy,” she said with a shrug, and started on her second climbing.
Apparently, if I had known the secret, I could have climbed the wall myself. When I was sixteen, I once failed to climb a rock wall. With added weight and reduced muscle tone, I doubted if I could even do it. I didn’t see any other moms trying to climb the wall. Several months earlier, embarrassment would have stopped me from trying. But my cancer did funny things to my brain. It made me realise that I needed to be braver than I thought.
With determination, I decided to try it and the same young employee checked my safety rope and gave me the thumbs-up sign. As I began my climb, I was excited by my own bravery for trying something so new. However, only ten feet up, my fingers and toes started to tire, and there was absolutely no place to rest. My excitement began to disappear and I was afraid that I was going to slip and fall.

But I knew if I wanted to make it, I had to trust the rope.

I took a deep breath. Immediately, I felt the safety from the rope. I realised that even though slipping might make me nervous, I would be perfectly safe. With newfound trust in the rope, I started climbing again. As I continued, my rope caught me many times. And I also reminded myself to be brave. Five minutes later, I was at the top of the wall. I made it!
That day’s successful experience inspired me in my cancer battle.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
During the medical treatment, I kept telling myself the secret of doing something hard and scary: just trust the rope. My family, my friends, even my doctors could all be the rope that I could rely on all the time. They tried their best to help and support me, just like the rope that had lifted me up that day at the indoor climbing gym. Their love, care and company gave me the courage and confidence in the battle against my cancer.

Test 1
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It’s hard being an astronaut’s son. I often wonder how my father ever had a son like me. I mean he’s so special and so good at everything he does. But I’m just an average eleven-year-old kid.
Nowadays I dream about being a famous writer, but I used to dream about doing something special to impress my father and make him proud of me—something like rescuing a child from a burning building.
I was dreaming in school one morning, which I often do. I was daydreaming about being some kind of hero when my friend Ellen reminded me of my English teacher’s announcement about a Father’s Day essay contest.
“I hope we have a winner right here in my English class.” she said. “There are three prizes among you.”
When I got home, I kissed my mum quickly. Then I went upstairs to my room and sat down with a pen and a pad of paper. I started to think about what I would write.
How did I see my father? Mmm…
I saw him teaching me how to use a bat and how to throw baseball.
I remembered how he hugged me for hours when my dog Spotty was hit and killed by a car.
And I remembered how he sat and tried to explain death to me when Grandpa Bob died.
These were the things I was going to write about my dad. To me, he wasn’t just a famous astronaut. He was my dad.
I wrote about all these memories and put them in my essay. I handed it in the next day and was surprised to find out that the winning essays would be read in the lecture hall on Thursday night. All the parents and students were invited.
My parents and I went to school Thursday night. One of our neighbours said, “I bet you’ll win the contest, David. I bet you wrote what it’s like to be the son of an astronaut, and you’re the only one in town who could write about that.”

Though deep down, I didn’t want to win just because my father was an astronaut.I was relieved and disappointed at the same time at the news. When Ellen read to the end, I heard a chorus of praise and saw tears running down my parents’ face.Somehow, a mixed feeling welled up in me.Will Dad feel disappointed? Maybe I should have written about being the son of an astronaut.
Then the second prize winner was announced next—It was me.

Surprised and thrilled, I went up to the stage.Taking a deep breath, I started to read my essay “My Father’s Son.” “He is a great astronaut. But more importantly, he is a great father to me.” Upon my finishing reading, the auditorium thundered with applause. When I went back to my seat, Dad put his hand on my shoulder.“Son, this is the proudest moment of my life,” he almost sobbed. It was the proudest moment of my life, too.Maybe I’ll never be a great hero, but just then, it was enough just to be my father’s son.

In a small town, there lived a young woman named Sophie. She was known not only for her kind heart but also for her lack of self-confidence. She had a habit of constantly comparing her own achievements with those of others around her, and more often than not, this left her feeling as if she were stuck in a rut(一成不变), making no real progress in her personal growth journey.
One ordinary day, while cleaning her grandmother’s room, Sophie found a book titled “The Path to Self-Perfection”. When she opened the first page, the words “Perfection is not the goal, but growth is.” caught her attention. Then a glimmer of hope sparked within her, and she was instantly encouraged to take the first step on a path of self-improvement.
The first chapter of the book speaks of the importance of setting goals. Sophie, who had always felt aimless, decided to challenge herself by setting a goal to run a marathon. She had never been athletic, but the idea of pushing her limits excited her. Each morning, she woke up earlier than usual to train. With every step, she felt her determination grow stronger.
As she continued with her marathon training, Sophie also followed the advice in the book about practicing mindfulness. She started meditating(冥想) daily, focusing on her breath and being present in the moment. This practice brought her a sense of peace that she had never experienced before. She found that by focusing on the present, she was better able to tackle her tasks and manage her time effectively.
One evening, while reflecting on her progress, Sophie realised that self-improvement was not just about physical challenges but also about emotional growth. She decided to face up to her fear of public speaking by joining a local debate club.

Her heart raced as she listened to others speak with confidence. When it was her turn, she hesitated but remembered the words from the book-growth is the goal. Encouraging herself silently, she began to speak, her voice trembling at first. Despite the initial fear, she managed to express her ideas. The supportive applause from the members made her feel accepted and motivated to continue.
Slowly but surely, Sophie noticed a change._________________________

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Her fears gradually diminished, and her confidence grew with each debate she participated in. She began to thrive not only in public speaking but in other areas of her life. Her marathon training improved as she believed in her capability. Sophie realised she no longer compared herself to others. Her journey of self-growth brought a sense of fulfillment, and she understood she was making strides, one step at a time.

It was a rough week. The price of oil skyrocketed as the temperature dropped sharply in Maine. We were looking at a high of eight degrees that week, and I had missed three days of work so my paycheck was going to be lower than normal. I was stressed, to say the least. I shopped strategically, looking for every possible way to cut pennies so I could buy groceries and keep the house warm.
My eight-year-old son didn’t understand when I told him we were struggling that week. He wanted a special kind of yoghurt, but I didn’t have the extra three dollars to buy it for him. It was the kind of yoghurt with a cartoon kid riding a skateboard on the front of the box, and a mere two spoonfuls in each cup. It was the kind of product that wastes a parent’s money and makes me hate advertising.
I felt guilty as a parent when those big eyes looked at me with confusion, as if to say, “It’s just yoghurt. What’s the big deal?” So I found a way. I put something back as single mothers often do. He got his yoghurt.
On the way driving back from the grocery store, I noticed a homeless man holding a sign by the side of the road. My heart hurt, and I tried not to look at him. I watched people stay away from him on the street and walk by without even meeting his eyes. My son didn’t seem to care much, either. I looked at the man closely then — bare hands grasping a piece of cardboard, snot(鼻涕) frozen to his face, a worn-out jacket. And there I was struggling because I had to buy oil and groceries. But I decided to help. I pulled over to the man and handed him a five-dollar bill.

“Mum, why are you so generous to this stranger while so mean to me when I asked for a yoghurt?” I explained that if we were blind to the poor man’s situation, he would be freezing. He didn’t have a home or food to eat after all. We could spare five dollars even if we were financially stressed. Finally, my son nodded and fixed his eyes on his yoghurt.
On that day, my son performed an act that most adults wouldn’t have done. _________________________________________________________

He took his yoghurt and handed it to the man outside his window. Even if it was just a matter of a few spoonfuls of yoghurt, it was all he had, and he gave it to someone who needed it more than he wanted it.Moved to tears, the man failed to say a word and gave him a big smile. There are always blessings to count if we open our eyes, and always have the opportunity to be a blessing for someone else.

We sat on the bus waiting while other passengers piled on. A blond-haired girl, about nineteen years old, took the seat in front of us. The bus driver followed behind her. He demanded her fare.
“You pay $40 or get off the bus!” the driver said.
“I paid already. Yesterday, online,” the girl insisted.
“No, no record of it!” the bus driver pointed to the paper in his hand and waved it in her face. “See. No pay! You pay, or you must get off.” He angrily pointed to the exit door.
“But I don’t have money. And I paid already. Please.”
The bus driver picked up his mobile phone and made a call to find out if there had been an error with the paperwork. After failing to get through, he was getting angrier with the girl. So he cut the call and said to the girl.“No, you have not paid. You must pay now.”
“But please, I don’t have any money on me now. I must get to LA today. Please…” the girl begged. Tears streamed down her face.
I had boarded the bus headed to Los Angeles. I was very excited about experiencing LA. My dream of visiting Disney Land was about to come true. But while I sat there comfortably in my seat, thinking about my next adventure, this young girl was in tears, with a man standing over her, demanding money.
I wasn’t sure what I should do. Was she telling the truth? It wouldn’t be the first time someone had extracted money by telling a sad story that
turned out untrue. Did she really not have any money? Maybe the bus driver would show some sympathy and allow her to sort the payment out later?
But no, the bus driver continued to demand she pay $40 or get off the bus. The young girl insisted that she didn’t have enough money for the fare and had no one she could contact for help. It seemed the driver would throw her off the bus.

At the age of 17, I formed a band with three classmates. After we won the first prize at our school’s talent show, we decided to see if we could get some local performances. When we found out we’d gotten booked for a charitable event at a large hospital, we were excited. For two weeks, we practiced hard, getting together every day after school to sharpen our skills and learn enough songs to fill a one-hour show.
On the day of the concert, we showed up early to check out the stage. We set up and did a quick sound check, then went backstage to have a soda and rest. While we were back there, the hospital’s entertainment director came over to talk to us.
“Okay, boys, I just want to fill you in on a couple of important details,” she told us. “A lot of the people in the audience are suffering from severe physical or mental disabilities. Also, many of them are very old. Don’t let that alarm you. They have very few chances to see live entertainment of any kind, so they enjoy any kind of musical talent. Just play your regular show, and you’ll do fine.” With that, she left, going to help the volunteers and staff that were assisting the patients to their seats.
Soon enough, it was showtime. Everything was perfect, and we played probably the best show of our lives. We hardly missed a note on any of our songs. Unfortunately, we couldn’t enjoy our performance. As each song finished, there was a short pause. This was the time when the audience would normally applaud. Now, we were getting nothing. Zero. The deafening silence only made us more determined to win the audience over. We tried harder. Loud songs, soft songs, it made no difference. After forty-five minutes, we decided to end our set early. Why bother finishing when no one was appreciating us anyway? We unplugged(拔去)our instruments and went backstage.

Returning to the stage, we played our final three songs.

Finally, with the show over, we began packing up our instruments. We had still received no applause. However, as we were to leave, at least fifty people crowded onto the stage. All of them wanted to thank us; some shook our hands, and some surrounded us with a wide grin.Several told us that we were the best band that had played for them in years. We couldn’t believe it.We never felt as good as we did that one special night.

This morning, something was wrong with the dog. He wouldn’t play with my son, and he appeared absent-minded. He was running back and forth between the two office windows. “He must hear a bird outside,” I explained, urging my son to get his backpack together.
As we hurried to the car, my son stopped in his tracks. “Mama, do you hear that?”
I was too busy to acknowledge anything, although I did hear a strange sound.
“We’re late! Get in the car!” I said, and my son did so unwillingly.
I bent over to help him with his seatbelt and felt something soft on the top of my foot. I jumped!
There was a brown cat standing behind me. It was making that strange sound.
“What is it, Mama?” My son lifted himself up to get a better look.
The cat approached me, touching my foot again, its meows weak but very lasting.
“Aww, hey there, little fella.” I bent to give it a pat as the meows turned to purrs. As the grateful cat moved against my leg, I was shocked at what I saw next.
At first, it didn’t seem abnormal, but as I looked closer, I realised the cat’s back-right leg was severely injured and began to rot(腐烂). This poor cat with brilliant green eyes was begging for my help!
I told my son to stay in the car and quickly called my mom. She knew of a nearby animal clinic, so I placed the injured cat in our pet carrier and rushed to the vet(兽医).
The vet said that nothing could be done even though I said I would pay whatever it cost. I quickly loaded my son and the cat back into the car. I knew time was of the essence. The receptionist ran out to my car. “Take it to VCA Animal Hospital!” she called out with her cell phone up to her ear. “I’m calling them now to say you’re coming!”

I watched as its brilliant green eyes looked at me through the pet carrier. The surgeon came in as I filled out the paperwork. “It’s in really bad shape. Chances are, it probably won’t make it.” I was updated later that night: The surgery was over and the cat was in recovery. After a few more days, we were invited to visit the hospital and the surgeon met us in the waiting room.
The surgeon told us, “Upon seeing it, you might be a little surprised, shocked even.” ________________________________________________

Informed that the cat would only have three legs, astonished as we were,we determined that we could give it as much love as possible. We walked into the exam room. It was the cutest snow-white cat we had ever seen!I recognised those brilliant green eyes. Our sweet and thankful cat was lightning fast despite missing one leg. It wasn’t disturbed by its disability and was a reminder that we are only as limited as we allow ourselves to be.

On a crisp New Year’s morning, Emily woke up with excitement and quickly got ready. She wanted to be the first to greet everyone she knew with a cheerful “Happy New Year”. She dashed around her house, sharing her joy with her family, and then hurried outside to spread the happiness to her neighbours.
Emily’s parents had given her two shiny silver coins as a New Year’s gift, and she was thrilled. She had been saving up to buy a set of colourful paints she had admired at the local art shop. With a spring in her step, she headed for the store, imagining the beautiful art she would create.
As she wandered through the bustling(热闹的) streets, Emily noticed shopkeepers setting up their stands, children playing with their new toys, and the lovely smell of baked goods floating from the bakery. The whole town seemed alive with happiness.
Just as she was about to cross over to the art shop, she caught sight of a small park where a woman sat on a bench with two young children. “Happy New Year!” Emily cheerfully called out as she approached them. The woman managed a weak smile but said nothing. Noticing their clothes seemed inadequate against the biting chill of the morning, and they hugged together for warmth, Emily realised they might be hungry.
Emily felt a tug at her heart(一阵揪心). She thought of her paints, the beautiful colours she longed to mix, but her mind kept drifting back to the family in the park. She approached them again. With a small nod of
determination, Emily reached into her pocket, pulled out the two coins, and handed them to the woman. The woman’s eyes widened with surprise and gratitude, tears brimming as she accepted the coins, murmuring words of thanks in a language Emily didn’t understand. The children also looked up with shy smiles, their eyes full of hope.
Emily returned home without her paints, but her heart was full. When her mother asked about the paints, Emily hesitated briefly, “I didn’t get them,” she confessed(坦白), “I gave my money to a family who needed it more.”

Her mother smiled warmly. “What you did was truly kind,” she said, her voice filled with admiration. Wanting to recognise her daughter’s selflessness, Emily’s mother took Emily back to the store, where she purchased the paints Emily had been dreaming of for so long. As they walked out, her mother carefully handed the paints to Emily, looking into her eyes and saying, “Today, you’ve made someone’s world a little brighter, and that’s the most beautiful gift of all.”
Emily felt like the happiest girl when she held the paints her mother gave her._____________________________________________________________

She could hardly believe the moment had come, her mother’s words of praise still echoing in her mind. That evening, she began her first painting, inspired by the scenes of love and generosity that had filled her heart that day. In that moment, Emily realised that giving brought her more joy than receiving, and that, truly, was the best gift of all.

(2024安徽高三阶段测)Heart transplants are a lifesaving procedure, but often we do not know much about the donor of the heart.
“Your mother needs a new heart,” my father told me when I called on that December afternoon. But, although my two sisters and I knew that our mother had heart problems, this was shocking news. We went together the next day to the hospital in Boston for a conference with her doctors.
Dr Marc Semigran of the transplant team reviewed my mother’s medical history. She’d had an irregular and rapid heartbeat for most of her life. My mother had a 60 percent chance of living six months. She could have a longer life with a transplant, but there were risks. She was at the top end of the age group. Sixty years old, we were told, was generally the cut-off point for heart-transplant patients. Besides, hearts were hard to come by.
We planned to apply to the programme of heart transplants, and she would probably have to wait 9 to 12 months for a donor. She was told to go home and try to live a normal life.
While we waited, I thought a great deal about my mother. She grew up in Yarmouthport, Massachusetts, a tenth-generation descendant of its founder. She told me stories about life in the early part of this century and gave me glimpses of our forebears: a general-store owner, a sea captain, a clergyman.
We’d already gone from shock, over our mother’s condition, to worry. My family was coming together, trying to provide strength and to work out what to do.
Word came later in December that she had been accepted into the programme. Her doctor told us one of the reasons she had been accepted, at her age, was that she had such strong family support. We all began to adjust to the idea of our mother’s having a new heart.

On hearing the good news that a heart was available, we jumped with excitement, and in the meantime, we were not convinced whether the operation would be successful. As my mother was about to be taken to surgery, we held her hands tightly and comforted her.It was a long wait outside the operating room.Six hours later, a doctor told us that the conditions could not have been better and the heart transplant was successful, which relieved us.
When wondering who was the donor, I heard that a young man died from a car accident.___________________________________________________

I suspected his heart was beating in my mother’s chest, although I would never know for certain. The transplant process indicated that one family’s loss was another family’s gain.To our relief, my mother recovered gradually. We developed a feeling of love for her new heart, of gratitude to the doctors and those people who made a decision not for her, but for humanity.A heart was a gift and a gift was to be accepted as one.Whoever the donor was, I owe him my appreciation for my mother’s new heart.
