UNIT 5 On the road
When my editors asked me to report on forest bathing, I packed a swimsuit.I assumed it must involve getting in the water. It turns out, my interpretation was too literal.
I met certified forest therapy (治疗) guide Melanie Choukas-Bradley in an urban forest in Washington, DC.Here, I began to get it.Forest bathing isn’t a bath or a hike.We did walk the forest trails, but we wandered with no particular destination in mind.
The aim of forest bathing, Choukas-Bradley explained, is to slow down and throw oneself in the natural environment. She helped us be aware of the smells, tastes and sights of the forest. We took in our surroundings by using all our senses. As we passed through a stand of trees, we touched the trunks. We smelled the black walnuts, which give off a lovely fragrance (香气).We got a little shower of ripe mulberries, too.“Close your eyes and just breathe,” Choukas-Bradley told us.After I opened my eyes, the green looked a lot greener. And I began to see things I hadn’t noticed before.
“A forest guide helps us be here, not there,” says Amos Clifford, the founder of the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy, the organization that certifies the guides. They support what the forests could offer us, inviting us into practices that deepen physical presence, pleasure, and partnership with nature. When we connect with nature in this way, we are connecting with ourselves.
Clifford’s goal is to encourage health care providers to integrate forest therapy as a stress-reduction strategy. In the United States, work-related stress accounts for up to $190 billion in health care costs each year.“It’s my hope that the health care system will include forest therapy into the range of services,” Clifford says.

A.Locate and pick ripe fruits. B.Put exercise plans into action.
C.Identify different trees and birds. D.Concentrate on the surrounding nature.
4.What can we learn from Clifford’s words in the last paragraph?( )

(2025·湖州二模)I first met Bo when I volunteered to be a docent (讲解员) at the zoo.It was a summer program our school participated in, where biology students earned extra credit by teaching little kids about some of the animals.I needed to increase my biology grade, so I asked my friend Sue Wang to be my partner.“Melanie, I’ll do this with you,” she said, “but I’ll do the talking. No way will I handle the animals!” That was OK with me.
During the training course, our instructor, Mr Lindsey came to Sue and me and said, “OK, girls, your animal is a boa (蟒蛇).” I felt myself go cold.“I have to handle a boa?”
That night, I had a nightmare.I was carrying the snake around a classroom, showing the kids, when all of a sudden it started constricting (收紧).It squeezed and squeezed, and I couldn’t breathe! I woke up in a sweat, my body rigid.
Next day I told my instructor.“Sure you can do it,” he said.He slid the door of the snake carrier open.“Now put your elbow in — slowly — and wait for him to crawl on your arm.Good, that’s the way.” He wasn’t wet or slimy. He was dry and soft! But it was scary! Mr Lindsey stood beside me.“Relax, Melanie. You need to show him you aren’t afraid. He needs to trust you, and you need to trust him.” Yeah, right. He didn’t do anything.Awesome! I named him Bo.After a few school visits, I began to really like my boa and was pretty much at ease with him.
Then came the day I will never forget. As usual, I opened the carrier and took him out. After Sue talked about how boas live mostly in rain forests in Central and South America, I walked around the classroom, saying, “Don’t be afraid.See, he is nice. You can touch him gently, here, on his back. His name is Bo.”
Most of the kids actually did touch him, and everything went fine until one boy, for some unknown reasons, tapped Bo on the head.I froze.
My worst nightmare came true!
I closed the carrier and signaled the kids to come inside.

My worst nightmare came true! He suddenly rushed forward. The next moment, he crawled around the wrist of a terrified little girl. She screamed, and all the other children scattered, horrified. My heart stopped.I knew I had to act fast.Gently, but firmly, I reached out and started to unwrap the snake from the girl’s arm.“It’s OK, it’s OK,” I murmured, trying to comfort both her and Bo.Mr Lindsey rushed over and took the other end of the snake, guiding it back into its carrier. The little girl, still shaking, was led away by her teacher. The other children stood watching, wide-eyed.
I closed the carrier and signaled the kids to come inside.I knew they were scared, but I also knew that this was a teachable moment.I gathered them around me and explained that Bo had just defended himself.I stressed the importance of respecting animals and their space. Then, slowly, one by one, the children came forward to look at the carrier. They were still cautious, but their curiosity had won over their fear.I smiled and nodded at Mr Lindsey, who gave me a thumbs-up.That day, I not only tamed a snake, but I also taught a valuable lesson about understanding and empathy.I knew then that my experience with Bo would be one I would cherish forever.

Travel promotes understanding, expands our minds, makes us better people, and boosts local economies and communities, but the rapid growth of travel has led to overtourism in certain regions and destinations.36.( ) Certainly not.The loss of what travel offers would be unacceptable in today’s world. Here are some tips on making wise decisions to minimize pressure on the places we visit and improve our experience.
·Choose mindfully.Overvisited destinations are that way for a reason: they’re special. With so many online posts featuring the same places, it’s easy to feel like you’re missing out.Go somewhere only when the landscape, culture or food deeply draws you.37.( )
·Get creative. The best way to ease pressure on over-touristed destinations is to go somewhere else.Though overtourism is described as a problem affecting the entire world, it’s actually concentrated to a small number of extremely popular spots. That means you have tons of less-visited options to choose from.38.( ) Why not try a regional alternative or check out a popular destination’s lesser-known sights?
·39.( ) Minimize impact and maximize experience by skipping major holidays or rush hour. You’ll compete with fewer tourists, save money, experience a different side of a popular place, and boost the economy when tourism is traditionally slower.
Visiting a place that others call home is a privilege (荣幸).Do your part to preserve what makes a destination special in the first place.40.( ) You may be amazed how much closer you’ll feel to the people there.
A.Visit during off-peak times.
B.So, should we stop traveling?

36.B 根据空前句中的but the rapid growth of travel has led to overtourism in certain regions and destinations可知,旅游业的快速增长导致某些地区和目的地的过度旅游;再根据空后两句可知,在当今世界,失去旅行提供的东西是无法接受的。
本段中的skipping major holidays or rush hour、boost the economy when tourism is traditionally slower建议跳过重大假期或高峰时间旅行。

Overtourism Is For Real: How Can You Help?
Travel promotes understanding, expands our minds, makes us
better people, and boosts local economies and communities, but the
rapid growth of travel has led to overtourism in certain regions and
destinations.36.( ) Certainly not.The loss of what travel offers
would be unacceptable in today’s world. Here are some tips on making
wise decisions to minimize pressure on the places we visit and improve our
experience.
·Choose mindfully.Overvisited destinations are that way for a
reason: they’re special. With so many online posts featuring the same
places, it’s easy to feel like you’re missing out.Go somewhere only
when the landscape, culture or food deeply draws you.37.( )
·Get creative. The best way to ease pressure on over-touristed
destinations is to go somewhere else.Though overtourism is described as a
problem affecting the entire world, it’s actually concentrated to a small
number of extremely popular spots. That means you have tons of less-
visited options to choose from.38.( ) Why not try a regional
alternative or check out a popular destination’s lesser-known sights?
·39.( ) Minimize impact and maximize experience by
skipping major holidays or rush hour. You’ll compete with fewer
tourists, save money, experience a different side of a popular place,
and boost the economy when tourism is traditionally slower.
Visiting a place that others call home is a privilege (荣幸).Do
your part to preserve what makes a destination special in the first
place.40.( ) You may be amazed how much closer you’ll feel to
the people there.
A. Visit during off-peak times.
B. So, should we stop traveling?
C. Travel for you and no one else.
D. Can overtourism be avoided then?
E. You can still find relatively undiscovered places.
F. You’ll find yourself virtually alone, or close to it.
G. Consider giving back to the communities you’re visiting.
36. B 根据空前句中的but the rapid growth of travel has led to
overtourism in certain regions and destinations可知,旅游业的快速增长
major holidays or rush hour、boost the economy when tourism is

When my editors asked me to report on forest
bathing, I packed a swimsuit.I assumed it must involve getting in the
water. It turns out, my interpretation was too literal.
I met certified forest therapy (治疗) guide Melanie Choukas-
Bradley in an urban forest in Washington, DC. Here, I began to get
it.Forest bathing isn’t a bath or a hike.We did walk the forest trails, but
we wandered with no particular destination in mind.
The aim of forest bathing, Choukas-Bradley explained, is to slow
down and throw oneself in the natural environment. She helped us be
aware of the smells, tastes and sights of the forest. We took in our
surroundings by using all our senses. As we passed through a stand of
trees, we touched the trunks. We smelled the black walnuts, which give
off a lovely fragrance (香气).We got a little shower of ripe
mulberries, too.“Close your eyes and just breathe,” Choukas-
Bradley told us.After I opened my eyes, the green looked a lot
greener. And I began to see things I hadn’t noticed before.
“A forest guide helps us be here, not there,” says Amos
Clifford, the founder of the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy,
the organization that certifies the guides. They support what the forests
could offer us, inviting us into practices that deepen physical presence,
pleasure, and partnership with nature. When we connect with nature in
this way, we are connecting with ourselves.
Clifford’s goal is to encourage health care providers to integrate
forest therapy as a stress-reduction strategy. In the United States, work-
related stress accounts for up to $190 billion in health care costs each
year.“It’s my hope that the health care system will include forest

I first met Bo when I volunteered to be a docent
(讲解员) at the zoo.It was a summer program our school participated
in, where biology students earned extra credit by teaching little kids
about some of the animals.I needed to increase my biology grade, so I
asked my friend Sue Wang to be my partner.“Melanie, I’ll do this
with you,” she said, “but I’ll do the talking. No way will I handle
the animals!” That was OK with me.
During the training course, our instructor, Mr Lindsey came to
Sue and me and said, “OK, girls, your animal is a boa (蟒蛇).”
I felt myself go cold.“I have to handle a boa?”
That night, I had a nightmare.I was carrying the snake around a
classroom, showing the kids, when all of a sudden it started
constricting (收紧).It squeezed and squeezed, and I couldn’t
breathe! I woke up in a sweat, my body rigid.
Next day I told my instructor.“Sure you can do it,” he said.He
slid the door of the snake carrier open.“Now put your elbow in —
slowly — and wait for him to crawl on your arm.Good, that’s the
way.” He wasn’t wet or slimy. He was dry and soft! But it was
scary! Mr Lindsey stood beside me.“Relax, Melanie. You need to
show him you aren’t afraid. He needs to trust you, and you need to trust
him.” Yeah, right.He didn’t do anything.Awesome! I named him
Bo.After a few school visits, I began to really like my boa and was
pretty much at ease with him.
Then came the day I will never forget. As usual, I opened the carrier
and took him out. After Sue talked about how boas live mostly in rain
forests in Central and South America, I walked around the classroom,
saying, “Don’t be afraid.See, he is nice. You can touch him
gently, here, on his back. His name is Bo.”
Most of the kids actually did touch him, and everything went fine
until one boy, for some unknown reasons, tapped Bo on the head.I
froze.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;

My worst nightmare came true!
I closed the carrier and signaled the kids to come inside.
My worst nightmare came true! He suddenly rushed forward. The
next moment, he crawled around the wrist of a terrified little girl. She
screamed, and all the other children scattered, horrified. My heart
stopped.I knew I had to act fast.Gently, but firmly, I reached out and
started to unwrap the snake from the girl’s arm.“It’s OK, it’s
OK,” I murmured, trying to comfort both her and Bo.Mr Lindsey
rushed over and took the other end of the snake, guiding it back into its
carrier. The little girl, still shaking, was led away by her teacher. The
other children stood watching, wide-eyed.
I closed the carrier and signaled the kids to come inside.I knew they
were scared, but I also knew that this was a teachable moment.I gathered
them around me and explained that Bo had just defended himself.I
stressed the importance of respecting animals and their space. Then,
slowly, one by one, the children came forward to look at the
carrier. They were still cautious, but their curiosity had won over their
fear.I smiled and nodded at Mr Lindsey, who gave me a thumbs-up.That
day, I not only tamed a snake, but I also taught a valuable lesson about
understanding and empathy.I knew then that my experience with Bo
would be one I would cherish forever.
