My wife and I used to feel that it was impossible to be a true friend to someone whose name we didn’t know. How wrong we were! Years of Sunday-morning bus trips through the city with the same group of “nameless” people have changed our thinking.
Before the bus takes off, we all join in a conversation: where’s the silent woman who sits at the front and never replies to our cheery greetings Here she comes. Her worn clothing suggests she doesn’t have much money to spare, but she always takes an extra cup of coffee for the driver.
We get smiles from a Mexican couple as they get on the bus hand in hand. When they get off, they’re still holding hands. The woman was pregnant late last year, and one day her change of shape showed that she’d given birth to the child. We even felt a little proud at the thought of our extended family.
For many months, our only sadness lay in our being unable to establish the same friendship with the silent woman at the front of the bus. Then, one evening, we went to a fish restaurant. We were shown to a table alongside someone sitting alone. It was the woman from the bus.
We greeted her with friendly familiarity we’d shown all year, but this time her face softened, then a shy smile. When she spoke, the words escaped from her lips with difficulty. All at once we realized why she hadn’t spoken to us before. Talking was hard for her.
Over dinner, we learned the stay of a single mother with a disabled son who was receiving special care away from home. She missed him very much, she explained.
“I love him… and he loves me, even though he doesn’t express it very well,” she spoke in a low voice. “Lots of us have that problem, don’t we We don’t say what we want to say, what we should be saying. And that’s not good enough.”
The candles flared on our tables. Our fish had never tasted better. But the atmosphere grew pleasant, and when we parted as friends—we shared names.
4. All the following words can be used to describe the woman EXCEPT________.
A. cold B. silent C. poor D. shy
5. The underlined word “establish” in the fourth paragraph probably has the same meaning as ________.
A. break B. remember C. build D. ruin(毁掉)
6. Why did the woman usually keep silence while taking the bus
A. She had difficulty in expressing herself.
B. She was worried about her disabled son.
C. She was sad to see the happy Mexican couple as a single mother.
D. She was only interested in the bus driver.
7. Which of the following might be the best title of this passage
A. The Silent Woman on the Bus B. Friends on the Road
C. Going to Work by Bus D. Different Kinds of Friendship

When Jagadish Mahendran heard about his friend’s daily challenges navigating as a blind person, he immediately thought of his artificial intelligence work.
“For years I had been teaching robots to see things,” he said. Mahendran, a computer vision researcher at the University of Georgia’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence, found it ironic that he had helped develop machines — including a shopping robot that could “see” stocked shelves and a kitchen robot — but nothing for people with low or no vision.
After exploring existing technology for blind and low vision people like camera-enabled canes or GPS-connected smart-phone apps, he came up with a backpack-based AI design that uses cameras to provide instantaneous alerts.
“The camera data is processed right away as it’s captured,” he said.
That data makes it to a Bluetooth-enabled earphone that warns the user of any obstructions or route changes. Along with a backpack, the user also has to wear a vest and fanny pack, which houses the AI equipment, sensors, camera, and GPS.
Currently, the vest includes hidden Intel sensors and a front-facing camera, while the backpack and fanny pack house a small computing unit (运算单元) and power source. The Luxonis OAK-D unit, located in the vest and fanny pack, is an AI device that processes camera data almost instantly to interpret the world around the user.
Mahendran’s AI backpack isn’t for sale, but he says he is going to start a GoFundMe to equip any blind pedestrians who want to use the system.
13. What does the underlined word “instantaneous” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Intelligent B. Immediate
C. Accurate D. Effective
14. What do we know about Mahendran
A. He thinks artificial intelligence is of little use to blind people.
B. He was not successful in helping people with eyesight trouble at first.
C. The AI backpack that he has developed is the best.
D. His AI backpack will be put on the market soon.
15. What question is answered in Paragraph 5 and Paragraph 6
A. What is a Luxonis OAK-D unit
B. How is the AI backpack developed
C. How is the captured data transferred to a Bluetooth-enabled earphone
D. What does the AI backpack device consist of
16. What is the purpose of the text
A. To prove that a helping hand is everywhere.
B. To explain the new trend of AI
C. To introduce a new AI device.
D. To give suggestions on how to help the blind.

【答案】Dear Tom,
Knowing that you have been admitted into Peking University and seek further study here, I am writing to extend my congratulations.
As for the major, I recommend that you devote yourself to the major in Chinese language and literature. Two factors account for this choice. In the first place, as far as I know, you have been learning Chinese idioms on the radio for the past two years, which greatly enriches your Chinese vocabulary and gives you a better understanding of Chinese culture and customs. In addition, you always hold a dream that one day, you would promote Chinese culture by teaching China-related lessons back in America. Armed with a great command of Chinese language, you can live up to your dream.
I can’t wait to meet you in Beijing this summer.
六、书面表达
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头与续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a hot July afternoon in Philadelphia. The five boys I was with had grown tired of burning holes in dry leaves with a lens(凸透镜). So when freckle-faced(满脸雀斑的)little Jerry suggested climbing the cliff, the rest of kids all agreed excitedly, except me. I hesitated. I’d been a sickly child most of my eight years and I actually wasn’t as strong as the other boys. But my father’s voice echoed in my ears: “Be brave and active.”
“Come on!” Called Jerry, “Just being sick is no reason to be a coward(胆小鬼).” “I’m coming!” I yelled, and ran along after them. Through the park and into the woods we went, finally we stood beneath the near vertical(垂直的) wall of a small cliff, about 33 feet high. To me it looked like the very symbol of the Forbidden and Impossible.
One by one, the other boys climbed upward, finding handholds and toeholds on rocks. I hung back until the others were partway up. Then trembling and sweating, I began to climb. A hand here, a foot there, my heart racing in my skinny chest, I made my way up and up. At some point, I looked back and was horrified. The ground at the base of the cliff seemed very far below. One slip and I would fall. But the boys were talking loudly and happily above me. In a few minutes they started up to the top while I still struggled and crawled, far behind.
“Hey, wait,” I begged. Sadly, they ignored my request and continued their way to the top, from where they would walk home by an easier route. Before they left, they glanced down at me. “You can stay if you want to”, teased Jerry.
I looked down and a nameless force seemed to be dragging me to fall off. I grasped the rock as the world spun around. I could never climb back down. It was much too far to go, too dangerous.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150词左右
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1: However, the way up to the top was even worse—higher, steeper, more challenging.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: I didn’t know how long it had passed until a familiar voice of my father came below.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1: However, the way up to the top was even worse—higher, steeper, more challenging. I would never make it. I heard someone sobbing and moaning; I wondered who it was and realized that it was I. It was no use crying because nobody would hear me. The other boys must have been home. Time dragged terribly. And with each passing minute, my legs and arms grew sore. I was seized by a strong sense of horror and my palms were sweating. Something rolled down my cheeks. It was tears or sweat, or both. The sun disappeared from the sky, and dusk began to gather. The ground below the cliff became dim. You can’t imagine how desperate I was at that time.
Paragraph 2: I didn’t know how long it had passed until a familiar voice of my father came below. I glanced down! It was my dad with a flashlight. But my relief transformed into disappointment. My father stood still and didn’t climb up here and carry me down. “Come on down and take one little step by step. Don’t look down any farther than that first step. Trust me, you can do that, my brave boy!” His comforting tone seemed to have a magic power. Somehow, following his light, I struggled to inch backward, cautiously feel for the rock with my left foot and move my foot down there very slowly. Finally I took the last step down onto the ground and into my father’s strong arms, sobbing a little, and then, surprisingly, feeling a sense of immense accomplishment and something like pride.
