I was born into a family that was short on money but long on seeking knowledge. We had many books. And for me, libraries were a place to get my favourite books.
I got older and did the things most people did. Then one spring and summer my life changed. I lost my wife and retired. I realized that I had more time on my hands than I had things to do. So I took a volunteer job at an organization that sent food, clothes and perhaps some hope to unlucky members of our community. It was, and remains, an excellent organization, but I didn’t feel a connection between it and me. I left.
At the same time, I discovered that I was about to lose touch with an old, dear friend. Traditional methods of communication were out of the question. I had only a vague (模糊的) idea of what an email was, and I had no computer. As you might well guess, I had no warm feelings about computers. I had to choose: I could keep the attitude, or keep the friend. No-brainer.
My little library in Camp Verde, Arizona was beginning a computer class designed for beginners. I learned how to email. Having no computer, I had to drive to the library most days to do my emailing. Over a period of time I attracted the attention of Alice, a worker at the library. She felt the library would be the perfect place for me to volunteer. She had a point. I was already there a lot and I enjoyed the people I came in contact with. So I volunteered.
Over the next couple of years, I learned much more about computers in general and finally came to the point where I was actually able to help others with some computer problems. Imagine that!

A. He often read books.
B. He seldom went to libraries.

A. He found it enjoyable.
B. He learned a lot from it.
C. He wasn’t interested in it.

A. To kill time after retirement.
B. To use the library in a smarter way.
C. To keep in touch with an old friend.
D. To satisfy his interest in the Internet.
27.How does the writer develop the passage
A. By listing numbers. B. By giving examples.
C. By following the order of time. D. By following the order of space.

Love Is in the Air is one of the most popular wedding songs—it describes the invisible magic of this incredible feeling. For Joel and Shelley, love is literally in the air—a couple who met 30 years ago as US Air Force jet pilots now fly Southwest Airlines planes together as a dream team.
Shelley grew up in Iowa and later moved to Colorado, where Joel resided. In the late 1980s, they both went to study at the United States Air Force Academy to become professional pilots. Soon, four years at the academy passed without them actually meeting each other, although Joel heard of this girl as there were not many women studying there.
A few more years later, they finally met when they got the same first assignment. When Shelle y walked into the office, Joel was instantly attracted by her. "She s taller than me. She s an athlete, a natural leader, and just an impressive person. I didn t know if she would consider going out with me," Joel recalled.
As time went by, Joel s gentle and warm nature appealed to Shelley, who said, "He just really has a sensitive heart to people around him."
A year later, they started dating during their first deployment (调动) abroad—the couple would spend hours talking about everything, getting to know each other s darkest secrets and most sacred wishes. In their hearts they both knew that they had found the one, so a few months after they came back to their country, they tied the knot.
In the early 2000s, the married couple welcomed their twins and Shelley decided to take some time off flying and worked at US Air National Guard while Joel became a commercial pilot. Once the kids left the nest, Shelley found herself dreaming about flying again despite not being in the cockpit (驾驶舱) for over two decades.
Joel loved the idea and encouraged Shelley to go on to study and update her pilot qualifications. In 2023, Shelley joined Joel at Southwest!
Now the lovebirds fly together, Joel as the captain and Shelley as the first officer.

Palaces are known for their beauty and splendor, but they offer little protection against attacks. It is easy to defend a fortress (堡垒), but fortresses are not designed with the comfort of a king or queen in mind. When it comes to structures that are both fancy and well-defended, the classic European castle is the best example of design. Across the ages, castles changed, developed, and eventually fell out of use, but they still command the fascination of our culture.
Castles were originally built in England by Norman invaders. In 1066. As William the Conqueror advanced through England, he defended key positions to secure the land he had taken. The castles he built allowed the Norman lords to draw back to safety when threatened by English rebellion(叛乱). Castles also served as bases of operation for offensive attacks. Soldiers were gathered, organized around, and deployed (部署) from castles. In this way castles served both offensive and defensive roles in military operations.
Not limited to military(军事的) purposes, castles also served as offices from which the lord would administer control over his kingdom. That is to say, the lord of the land would hold court in his castle. Those that were socially beneath the lord would come to report the affairs of the lands that they governed and pay tribute to the lord. They would address conflicts, handle business, feast, and enjoy festivities, In this way castles served as important social centers in medieval England. Castles also served as symbols of power. Built on important and noticeable sites overlooking the surrounding areas, castles always appeared in the background of many peasants and served as a daily reminder of the lords strength.
Now, castles no longer serve their original purposes. However, the remaining castles receive millions of visitors each year from those who wish to experience the glory of a time long passed.
32.The author introduces the topic of the text by ________.
A. making an assumption B. giving an example
C. making comparison D. giving a definition
33.Why did William the Conqueror build castles
A. He wanted to celebrate his victory.
B. He wanted to remind people of his influence.
C. He wanted to live peacefully with the English.
D. He wanted to use them to his military advantage.
34.Which of the following is a way the lord would adopt to show his power
A. Dealing with conflicts in his castle.
B. Building his castle in an obvious place.
C. Carrying out social activities in his castle.
D. Ordering peasants to live near his castle.

It was the middle of the day with the bright sun, blue sky, green grass, and a soft breeze (微风). It was a great day to play outside and the best day of my life because I got a new ball and a new bike as my sixth birthday presents, and I was visiting my cousin, Kristy, at her house.
"Here I go!" shouted David while kicking my new ball. David lived next door and was older than me. I thought he was a wild child, but he was actually very kind. The ball went flying as if it were going to space. "That was high!" Kristy said in surprise and we went after the ball. We all had a great time.
Later we had supper and the food my aunt made was good. While Kristy was helping do the dishes, David and I ran outside to play. We started taking turns riding my bike. David suggested that we ride it to the forest. And I agreed. David and I got on the bike and David started riding fast.
As we rode through the forest, I felt the wind brushing my face. It felt so great and free. Suddenly the bike hit a fallen branch and we went flying off the bike. Lying on the ground, I felt dizzy (眩晕的). I checked myself for injuries and saw some but they didn't upset me.
"David!" I shouted out anxiously.
"Hey," said a voice. I turned my head and it was David, who was standing behind me, holding my broken bike. At the sight of my disabled bike, I was so sad that I couldn't hold back my tears. It took David some time to calm me down.
