Tips on Visiting the London Eye
Before you travel here, check out our tips to have a better experience.
Avoid peak (高峰) times
The London Eye is the busiest between 11am and 3pm during the UK school holidays, and is quieter at the beginning and end of their opening hours, which change throughout the year.
Usually summer hours are 10am to 8:30pm and winter hours are 11am to 6pm, but do check in advance on their site for the hours on the day you plan to go.
Buy tickets online
Buying tickets online will allow you to avoid the ticket office line and also save you 10%, if you book more than 24 hours in advance. If you don’t want to wait, you’d better buy a Fast Track ticket, which can be bought on the day or online. It’s an extra cost, but will allow you to enter through a dedicated entrance (专用通道).
Travel by train
Waterloo station is the closest to the London Eye, at just a five-minute walk away. Both Embankment and Charing Cross stations are fairly close, at around a 10-minute walk. Westminster station is a short and pretty walk over the river where you’ll also find the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey and Big Ben.

“They are our guests,” Ghulam Mohiuddin Dar said on an extremely cold day as he and his colleagues broke the ice and dropped grain at bird feeding points on the Hokersar wetland in Kashmir.
Dar and his colleagues are hired by the local government to feed the hungry birds as weather conditions in the region became worse. “Since December, temperatures have dropped to—10℃ and there have been two heavy snowfalls, which have blanketed the vast rice fields and fruit farms in the area. Scores of wetlands and lakes, including parts of the famous Dal Lake, have been covered up by thick ice in Kashmir,” Dar added.
The cries of hundreds of thousands of birds that visit Kashmir during their winter migration (迁徙) have long been a welcome noise for the locals. They arrive from as far away as eastern Europe, Japan and Turkey to feed and produce babies in the wetlands. Officials say at least 700, 000 birds have moved to Kashmir in the past two months and expect more to arrive as temperatures improve in February.
In recent decades, the number of visiting birds has declined, which experts say is due to climate change and urban development. “Construction around the Hokersar wetland, poisonous waste and the changing climate in the area are robbing the birds of their traditional watering holes and nesting areas,” Dar explained.
According to a recent study by the University of Kashmir, the Hokersar wetland shrank (缩小) from nearly 19 square kilometers in 1969 to 12.8 square kilometers today. Fortunately, environmental groups and local residents are also joining hands to feed the hungry birds in the icy conditions.
“It’s not just our official duty to feed them but also an order from Nature,” Dar told me.

A.It is a big waste to feed them. B.They may destroy the crops.
C.It is annoying to hear their noise. D.They are their lovely guests.

A.The Hokersar wetland has to be protected.
B.Wildlife groups and locals did a good job.
C.It is absolutely necessary to help those birds.

“Why do Asians usually steam (清蒸) a fish for the New Year when it can be cooked in various ways ” asked Andy Ricker, who ran several famous Thai restaurants in America. “It can be fried or roasted. But if you live on a coast, or have access to first-rate fish, steaming is the best way to go.”
Another reason is that, in the right context, fish stand for good luck. The Chinese words for “fish” and “plenty” have the same pronunciation, and a fish, eaten on the eve of the lunar new year, represents a wish for plenty of good things to come. Therefore, enough fish should be cooked to ensure leftovers, which mean hopes for abundance in the year ahead.
Such lucky dishes are not unique to Asians. On New Year’s Day in America, black southerners have been eating Hoppin’ John, a delicious dish of rice and black-eyed beans (豆), cooked with salted pork or smoked ham(interest in African-American culture has made the recipe popular elsewhere). The beans symbolize coins, and the greens that are usually served as well stand for dollar bills. Some people even put a clean coin in the pot. Whoever gets it on their plate will enjoy a lot of good luck.
Diverse as these dishes are, they all represent hopes for good fortune. Fish, beans and greens are neither costly nor extraordinary, suggesting that luck is not something bought expensively or sought with difficulty. Good fortune, they suggest, lies all around, and is always within reach.
Whether anyone actually believes in the relationship between eating these foods and receiving the promised benefits is unclear. Mainly, these food traditions continue for the same reason that other traditions do: People have fond memories of celebrating them with their parents, and want to pass them down to their own children.
8.What does the underlined word “abundance” in paragraph 2 refer to
A.Delicious meals. B.Food left at the end of a meal.
C.A lot of good things. D.General situation related to an event.
9.What can we learn about Hoppin’ John
A.It is a kind of vegetable. B.It is a piece of delicious meat
C.It is a unique lucky name D.It is an African-American dish.
10.Which of the following can best describe the lucky dishes
A.Ordinary. B.Expensive. C.Rare. D.Fresh.
11.Why do most people follow the tradition according to the author
A.Their parents told them to do so.
B.Their children want to carry them on.
C.They value the experience behind the food.
D.They truly believe in the food-for-luck stories.
Pindar Van Arman is a painter, but he’s also a software designer. He has built some machines and worked on a DARPA challenge team in California to build a self-driving car. His latest project A robot painter, BitPaintr.
BitPaintr is Van Arman’s fifth robot in 10 years. Earlier versions included devices that produced simpler paintings with algorithms (算法). But the idea for BitPaintr is simple: A user just uploads a picture, and it can paint totally on its own and develop its own style.
Although his friends joke that he has invented a really expensive, slow, bad painter, Van Arman says teaching a machine how to be creative has helped him get to the bottom of what creativity is — and appreciate it.
“When you’re trying to teach a machine to do something that’s easy for humans, it really makes you sit back and see what humans are doing,” he says.
So what is creativity, then, if a robot with a paintbrush can be — or appear to be — just as creative as a human with a paintbrush
Mark Riedl, a professor at the Georgia Tech School of Interactive Computing, says it depends on how you define creativity. “There is creativity and Creativity,” Riedl says. “Being ‘creative’ usually has something to do with the little things that we do hundreds of times in our daily lives. They could be creative, but usually aren’t. To be ‘Creative’ is to have an imagination that will have a huge impact on a social level — the Picassos and the Mozarts of the world; the people who have produced something that’s taken on this additional level of meaning.”
Riedl admits what robots create is far from human-level quality art, but he sees robots entering the creative process as a positive thing.
“We want the computers to keep up with us,” he says. “And thanks to researchers like Van Arman, it seems like they will, although they will not replace us, but to help us to be more creative.”
12.Which is a new quality of BitPaintr
A.Simplicity. B.Creativity. C.Speed. D.Profitability.
13.What is Van Arman’s friends’ attitude to BitPaintr
A.Favorable. B.Doubtful. C.Unclear. D.Hopeful.
14.What does Mark Riedl suggest about computers
A.They will defeat the greatest artists soon.
B.They can produce “Creative” things by themselves.
C.They will learn more from the Picassos and the Mozarts.
D.They can help us to do daily things in more “creative” ways.
15.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Can BitPaintr-like Robots Replace Artists in the Future
B.Why Do People Have Sharply Different Views on AI Robots
C.What Is the Difference Between the Two Kinds of Creativity
D.Can BitPaintr Be Considered a “Creative” Painting Software

Emily was struggling to make ends meet, working two jobs just to afford a tiny apartment in the heart of the city. Despite her efforts, she often found herself feeling overwhelmed by the hardship of city life.
One cold evening, as Emily got home from her second job, she noticed a homeless man on the street corner, shaking under a thin blanket (毯子). His eyes, filled with a mixture of hopelessness and tiredness, met hers briefly before he lowered his head.
Without a second thought, Emily approached the man and offered him her scarf. “Here, you must be cold,” she said softly, putting the scarf around his shoulders. The man looked up at her, his eyes widening in surprise at this unexpected act of kindness. “Thank you,” he said.
From that day on, Emily made it a habit to stop and chat with the homeless man, whose name she learned was Greg. She brought him hot meals, blankets, and sometimes even books to pass the time. In return, Greg shared stories of his past — a life once filled with love and laughter, now lost to the cold streets.
As the days passed by, Emily found herself looking forward to their daily encounters (相遇). In Greg, she found a similar spirit—a gentle soul beat by life’s hardships but still resilient (坚韧的). And in Emily, Greg found a light of hope — a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there are still pockets of light to be found.
One evening, as Emily sat beside Greg on the cold street, she noticed something unusual in his eyes. “What is it, Greg ” she asked, sensing his unspoken thoughts. Greg hesitated fora moment before speaking, his voice shaking with emotion. “I want to change my life, Emily,” he said. “I want to leave these streets behind and start anew.”

“I believe in you, Greg,” Emily smiled, with pride for her friend. She placed a hand on his shoulder. “And I’ll be here to support you every step of the way.” With Emily’s support, Greg started a new journey. He worked in local shelters to rebuild his life from the ground up. Later, he found a job to support himself. Then he rented a small apartment, where he could enjoy good sleep and hot food. He bore in mind that through it all, Emily stood by his side, offering encouragement.
One sunny afternoon, Greg went to the same street corner. He waited there until he noticed a familiar figure approaching — yes, it was Emily. Greg’s eyes were bright with joy. “Emily,” he called out, his voice filled with excitement. “Thank you for believing in me when no one else would. You’ve given me a second chance at life, and I’ll never forget it!” Tears welled up in Emily’s eyes as she saw a totally different Greg. “You did this all on your own, Greg,” she said, her heart overflowing with pride.
