There’s a small, dark green room in Manchester Art Gallery. While people move around in the bright space, in
the dark green room they slow right down. They sit and look at the three paintings on the wall and really see them. Guided by a downloadable meditation (冥想), visitors are encouraged to spend up to 15 minutes with their chosen artwork, one on one.
In a world where demands for our eyeballs dominate and attention is the resource, this single-minded space, called Room to Breathe, is a place where you can regain your focus. It’s all part of the Mindful Museum Campaign led by museum consultant Louise Thompson.
Thompson has been working with Aleksandra Igdalova from Goldsmiths University’s psychology department to examine how art viewing in museums relates to engagement and well-being.
They found that visitors who viewed the same works in the mindful Room to Breathe setting reported feeling more relaxed and more cognitively engaged compared with those seeing the same works in a traditional gallery space.
Other galleries have taken up the Mindful Museums approach. At the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, mindful art viewing sessions were offered through 2024 as part of its Open Up With Vincent programme. With a focus on the artist’s work and life, the sessions ran alongside yoga (瑜伽) and guided art meditations.
The implication is that the act of slowing down and taking time to notice allows you to see the beauty and
interesting aspects of something you might have otherwise written off. It’s an idea that has wider consequences: stopping to think and consider something -art, music, writing or something else-builds meaning.
24. What is the main activity encouraged in the “Room to Breathe”
A. Taking a guided tour of the gallery. B. Focusing on one artwork for a while.
C. Discussing the artwork with other visitors. D. Engaging in physical exercises to relax.
25. How does the Mindful Museum Campaign benefit visitors
A. By interacting with the artists directly. B. By viewing art in a traditional setting.
C. By feeling more at ease and mentally focused. D. By providing historical information about artworks.
26. Why does the author mention the Van Gogh Museum
A. To emphasize its unique Vincent van Gogh collection. B. To show the approach is widely recognised.
C. To explain the history of the Van Gogh Museum D. To discuss the yoga sessions offered at the museum.
27. What does the underlined phrase “written off” in paragraph 6 mean
A. Removed. B. Noticed. C. Ignored. D. Cancelled.
C
You got a full eight hours of sleep last night. Maybe even nine. You’ve reduced coffee after 2 p. m., tried magnesium (镁) , and briefly considered the idea of taking cold showers in the morning. And yet, by mid-afternoon, you feel exhausted. So, what is happening
If exhaustion were purely about sleep, many of us would be bouncing out of bed refreshed, rather than waking up feeling like we fought a small war in our dreams. Tiredness isn’t always about how much rest you get-it’s about what’s exhausting you when you’re awake. If you’re constantly feeling exhausted, the cause might not be your bedtime; it might be the large amount of decisions, emotional labor, and self-imposed pressure you carry every day.
Every day, you make thousands of micro-decisions. Some are small (Should I wear the black sweater or the
gray one ), while others are more significant (Should I finally sign up for that certification ). But here’s the problem: Your brain has a limited capacity for decision-making each day. Once you hit that limit, your cognitive energy starts running low. Researchers call this “decision fatigue”, and it’s why by the end of the day, seemingly simple choices-like picking a dinner recipe - can feel impossible.
Even if you’re not consciously aware of it, you likely spend a significant part of your day managing not just your emotions, but everyone else’s. Emotional labor is the invisible work of anticipating needs, smoothing over social interactions, and managing the emotional climate around you. It’s keeping track of birthdays, remembering to text back that friend who’s been going through a rough time, and ensuring that a work meeting doesn’t go off track. And here’s the frustrating part: Because emotional labor is invisible, it often goes unacknowledged.
You can’t exactly quit making decisions or caring about people, but you can start protecting your energy by setting limits on where your mental and emotional bandwidth goes. Reducing decision overload, setting emotional boundaries, and prioritizing true rest (Not Just Sleep) are key to protecting your energy and maintaining balance.
28. Why do many people still feel tired even after a long sleep
A. They sleep in an uncomfortable environment. B. Their brains are overloaded by too much stress.
C. They have too many social responsibilities. D. They don’t take cold showers in the morning.
29. What does “decision fatigue” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. The habit of delaying important decisions.
B. The inability to make any decisions after a long day.
C. The exhaustion caused by making too many choices.
D. The preference for simple decisions over complex ones
30. Which of the following is an example of “emotional labor”
A. Preparing a presentation for a meeting. B. Managing a project timeline at work
C. Controlling emotions when making a decision. D. Supporting a friend through a tough time.
31. What suggestion does the author give to reduce exhaustion
A. Quit making decisions. B. Focus on physical rest like sleep.
C. Avoid social interactions. D. Restrict mental and emotional efforts.
D
When visiting a doctor a few years from now, you can expect to be accompanied by a virtual version of yourself. This so-called digital twin will be a working model of your body that can be displayed onto a physician’s computer screen. Updated with your latest vital signs, it will help the doctor make an accurate diagnosis and enable personalized medicines and procedures.
This might seem like fantasy, but the foundations are being laid. Researchers at Queen Mary University of London already use computer simulations of the hearts of individual patients to evaluate different treatments for atrial fibrillation, a common disorder. With other organs also being twinned by scientists, it seems likely they will eventually link up to form a virtual body.
Actually, digital twins are becoming widespread, monitoring jet engines, tracking Uber vehicles, and
Modeling Amazon’s supply chain to forecast sales. They help local authorities manage flooding, assist carmakers
in speeding up model development, and are being developed to manage factories, companies, and cities.
Digital twins began as basic computer models of physical objects and systems. As computers have become more powerful, twins have become more sophisticated (复杂巧妙的). Complex design and modelling software means many physical objects initially take shape in the virtual world. Small sensors, capable of measuring all sorts of things, feed twins with real-time data, ensuring that they mirror their physical versions. The use of Al takes all this much further, allowing virtual models to become more sophisticated, and to both model and enhance activities in the real world.
Could these digital twins go out of control They might if they are programmed badly, or hacked into. Avoidable medical conditions could be ignored, corporate systems sent off course and critical power plants compromised. There is also the danger of narrow focus as humans rely more and more on digital twins and miss things that sensors might not be able to capture. Yet these risks are not specific to digital twins. They apply to all emerging technologies. Such concerns need to be considered, but its potential advantages are already plain to see.
32. What is the primary purpose of digital twins in healthcare
A. To replace doctors in making medical decisions. B. To monitor the condition of patients remotely.
C. To create digital records of patients’ medical history. D. To provide real-time data for personalized treatment.
33. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. Practical applications of digital twins in diverse fields.
B. The history and development of digital twin technology.
C. Potential risks associated with digital twin adoption.
D. The improvement of efficiency through digital twins.
34. What has made digital twins sophisticated
A. Virtual world design software. B. Increasing industry demand.
C. Real-time data from sensors. D. Powerful computers and AI.
35. What is the author’s attitude toward digital twins
A. Fully supportive despite risks. B. Strongly opposed due to dangers.
C. Cautious but optimistic. D. Uninterested and indifferent.

How to Start Working Out
Although nearly everyone likes the idea of regularly exercising or hitting the gym, maintaining the motivation to exercise regularly is a different story. 36 Fortunately, there are some tricks that can help you.
Set Clear Goals. This can be totally different for each person. 37 Having a clear goal will motivate you to continue exercising even when you don’t feel like it. Aim for something specific: to run a half-marathon in 6 months, or to perform 30 push-ups per minute in 3 weeks.
38 It will help the exercise routine become a habit. In order to integrate this into your lifestyle, you’ll need to make it a priority. To do this, set aside a time at least a few days a week. For example, plan to run for an
hour every morning at 7 am. Or, plan to hit the gym on Mondays from 6 to 8 pm.
Use a fitness app to track your progress. If you have a smartphone or tablet, download 1 or 2 fitness tracker apps to log your progress and monitor weekly improvements. Using an app can help motivate you to work out regularly. 39
Find a workout partner for motivation. 40 To avoid this, find a friend to join your workout routine. You can invite them to your gym trips or daily jogs. If a friend already exercises regularly, ask if you can join their routine. Having a friend or 2 around to work out with will help keep you responsible and ensure that you stick to your exercise schedule.
A. Make exercise routine a habit.
B. Exercising alone can lead to burnout.
C. Exercise boosts your motivation and energy
D. Select days and times when you can exercise.
E. It can be tough to establish and maintain a workout routine.
F. It allows you to monitor calories, steps, and other health data.
G. Maybe you might want to build muscle, lose weight, or stay fit and healthy.

Marcus, the oldest, spoke the question running through everyone’s mind, “Only two tickets But, Dad, which of us gets to go with you ” “Yeah, Daddy, who gets to go ” repeated Caleb, the youngest. “Dad, can’t you get any more tickets ” I asked. I might be the in-between sister, but I was just as eager as my
basketball-crazy brothers were for a night out with Dad. But he explained that Mr. Williams only had two tickets and offered them to him.
Dad scratched (挠) his head, “Caleb, don’t you think you’re a little young to enjoy a professional basketball game... ” “Am not! Am not!” Caleb insisted. Dad shifted his focus and tried again. “Jill, since you’re a girl.” Before I could respond, Mom came to my defense and said, “Jill’s practicing with Marcus and all of his friends, and she’s better than some of them, too!” “Okay, okay,” Dad smiled, “I guess I’ll have to figure out a fair way to choose who deserved it most by the next morning.”
The next day, Marcus rushed into the kitchen asking where Dad was. Caleb explained that Mom and Dad had gone to the library and told us to start our chores (家务活). Marcus, unimpressed, said he couldn’t focus on chores with the game just hours away. He and Caleb rushed outside to read the sports section of the newspaper. I sighed and started cleaning up the breakfast mess.
While doing the chores, I heard the basketball bouncing outside. I looked out the window and saw Marcus practicing shots with Caleb cheering him on. I carried the rubbish bag out to the dustbin outside the back door.
“You guys, Mom and dad will be back any minute,” I reminded them. 注意:

第四部分 写作(共两节,满分 40 分) 第一节(满分 15 分)
Dear fellow students.
I ’m Li Hua, president of the Students ’ Union. Recently, I’ve noticed some concerning reports about conflicts among students. These conflicts not only affect our mood but also have a negative impact on our studies and
personal growth.
To solve these problems, I have some suggestions. First, stay calm and avoid reacting angrily, expressing our own feelings and needs without blaming or accusing. Additionally, we should actively listen to each other’s point of view, allowing everyone involved to express their thoughts and concerns in a respectful manner. Finally, if necessary, we should seek support from teachers.
By using these methods, students can turn conflicts into opportunities for better understanding and personal growth. Let’s work together to create a harmonious campus!
Yours sincerely, Li Hua
第二节(满分 25 分)
As I opened the dustbin, a white envelope stuck to the lid (盖 子 ) caught my attention. Written on it was “Congratulations!” Inside was a ticket to the basketball game with a note that read, “To the one who deserves to go.” I couldn’t believe it- I was the one chosen! I thought back to Dad’s comment the night before, “I’ll decide who deserves it most.” Smiling, I realized he had already made his choice. When Marcus and Caleb came back, ready to start their chores, I held up the ticket and said, “It might be too late for that.” They stared in disbelief as Mom and Dad’s car pulled in
That evening of the big basketball game turned out to be as special as I ’d imagined. Two seats at Center Court, and a dad and his daughter cheering their team to victory. The roar of the crowd, the excitement of every shot, and the thrill of watching our team fight for the win made the night unforgettable. As we sat together, high-fiving and laughing, I couldn’t help but feel grateful. It wasn’t just about the game- it was a lesson in responsibility from a dad who let his kids make their own choices and earn their own rewards. I knew this memory would stay with me forever.

The one about cars has just finished, and now there’s one about clothes that’s called Modana. That’s M-O-D-A-N-A. It’s very interesting to see what people wore hundreds of years ago. Now, any questions
