(2024·北京高考·阅读理解B篇)When I was a little girl, I liked drawing, freely and joyously making marks on the walls at home.In primary school, I learned to write using chalks.Writing seemed to be another form of drawing.I shaped individual letters into repeating lines, which were abstract forms, delightful but meaningless patterns.
In secondary school, art was my favourite subject.Since I loved it so much I thought I was good at it.For the art O -level exam I had to present an oil painting.I found it difficult, but still hoped to pass.I failed, with a low grade.I'd been over- confident. Now I'd been declared talentless.
But other channels of creativity stayed open: I went on writing poems and stories.Still, I went to exhibitions often.I continued my habitual drawing, which I now characterised as childish doodling (乱画).In my 30s, I made painter friends and learned new ways of looking at art. However, I couldn't let myself have a go at actually doing it.Though these new friends were abstract painters using oil paints, or were printmakers or sculptors, I took oil painting as the taboo (禁忌) high form I wasn't allowed to practise.
One night, in my early 40s, I dreamed that a big woman in red approached me, handed me a bag of paints, and told me to start painting. The dream felt so authoritative that it shook me.It was a form of energy, giving me back something I'd lost.Accordingly, I started by experimenting with water colours. Finally, I bought some oil paints.
Although I have enjoyed breaking my decades- long taboo about working with oil paints, I have discovered I now prefer chalks and ink.I let my line drawings turn into cartoons I send to friends. It all feels free and easy.Un- anxious. This time around, I can accept my limitations but keep going.
Becoming a successful painter calls for being resolute.I realised I was always afraid of wanting too much. That dream reminded me that those fears and desires could encourage me to take risks and make experiments.

Looking at the two pictures, Jenny asked who drew them.
Looking at the two pictures, Jenny asked who drew them. Her grandma said they were both drawn by her, which greatly surprised Jenny. Her grandma told her the one that looked terrible was drawn by her recently while the one that looked great was drawn by her as a child. “I had a gift for drawing when I was little. However, I gave up drawing because I lost interest in it, thinking it tiring and boring. And gradually I lost my gift,”
her grandma said regretfully.Hearing that, Jenny decided to go back to her drawing classes because she still wanted to pursue her dream of being an artist and didn't want to lose her gift.

(2025·华中师范大学附中模拟)Mark Brown, 57, had been making films for 30 years, but he found himself feeling tired of it.“I thought, things can only go downhill.” Brown knew he needed to do something else — but what A few years earlier, he had bought his childhood house and moved in.While Brown wondered about a second career in gardening, he heard a different internal voice.
“That child who used to love drawing whispered to me down the years,” he said. Some unacknowledged longing in him was brought out.
There was a great oak tree near his home.It had stood out to his young self as a “fantastical giant — a treasure home to birds, insects and animals. There was a cave inside. We used to squeeze in through this hole.” He decided to lock himself away for two months to draw it in all its glorious detail.
“While I was drawing,” he said, “there came moments when it was as though the tree was drawing itself.I had spent so much time playing in it.I could feel it.It was deep inside me.” His finished oak held “a real power”, he said.“As you walk towards it, it just grows.” Brown became a tree portraitist.
Over the next few years, he travelled across Britain and spent days with the trees selected with the help of the Ancient Tree Forum, the Tree Council and the Woodland Trust.
Brown has started work on a 20- drawing series of Britain's most important ash trees.“These beautiful old ash trees are going to be lost to us,” he says.“They are 350 years old and they are dying because of a disease that we've spread.”
Drawing is not only an act of care and a demand for preservation, but it “gives me that interface between my passion for the natural world and my creativity,” Brown says.
It has also given him a different perspective on the passage of time.“I'm an old man yet I'm only 71, and some of the trees I've drawn are 1,000 years old. When I'm with them and when I draw them, I think about the end of my life and the brief nature of human life that passes momentarily beneath them.”

Many people, especially those who work from home, are turning to hobbies such as craft making as a way to relieve their working burnout.Knitting, weaving, pottery and painting are all crafts that have seen a renaissance, and many of them are being done by youngsters.
Besides turning to arts and crafts as an interesting pastime, people take it as a way to make a bit of pocket money.A large number of websites allow people to sell their home -made handicrafts.Richard Sennett,
author of The Craftsman, told the BBC: “A lot of people are finding their day jobs pretty empty, while learning a craft provides a real satisfaction. It's a skill — things like carpentry and weaving are mentally and physically encouraging, and people get essential pleasure out of that kind of work.”
The Internet has also been the paradise to buy craft tools which help you get started with your craft- making projects, such as candle making.
But many people are enjoying designing and making things from the beginning and are doing it just for pleasure or to occupy their minds — and there's evidence that it's good for us as well.According to research conducted by BBC Arts, even the briefest time spent on a creative pastime such as painting, pottery or playing the piano, has an impact on our well- being and emotions. The survey of around 80,000 people found being creative can help avoid stress, free up mind space and improve self- development, which helps build self -respect.

[1] The air was getting cooler. The leaves were starting to fall from the trees that lined the streets. As Nicole walked from school to the small bakery shop her mother had just started, she buttoned her sweater and looked up into the blue sky. Her mother expected her to walk the three blocks from school, but she was always standing on the steps of her bakery shop, waving and waiting for Nicole.

[2] Nicole always told about her day as her mom poured a small glass of milk. After her snack, Nicole completed her homework and then was allowed to help in the bakery. Recently, her mother taught her how to frost (上糖霜) and decorate cupcakes. Nicole loved to squeeze the colorful frosting through the tube onto the tops of cakes. She liked hearing the customers' reactions to her designs.
[3] For as long as Nicole could remember, she loved art. She impressed her teachers every year with watercolor paintings and clay sculptures. She had won the school's art contest two years in a row and was working on this year's project when she began decorating cupcakes. Nicole had never considered baking to be an art form until now. She could see how her complex and imaginative creations were inspiring to her mother's customers.
[4] Nicole was struggling and having a difficult time thinking of something original for this year's art contest. The rules read that the project simply had to be created entirely by the student, without any adult help. There were no restrictions on size or materials.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
As she sat and decorated a chocolate cupcake with small animal shapes for a child's birthday party, Nicole had an incredible idea.
On the night of the art show, Nicole's oversized cupcake brought surprised looks from her friends, teachers, and the contest judges.
①What was Nicole's idea
②What would Nicole do according to the rule
③What did Nicole do to prepare for the art show?(所做——衔接下文)
④How did Nicole feel when she explained her creative process
⑤How did the judges feel about her creation
⑥What was others' response?(所感——故事结尾)
Nicole spent hours very carefully measuring the ingredients and her first batch of cupcakes turned out perfect. She doubled the flour, eggs and milk and made one giant cupcake in a large round pan. She frosted the giant cupcake and then went to work.
After Nicole's giant cupcake earned her the first prize, her mother cut and served her art project. Everyone agreed that it tasted as good as it looked.
Through this event, Nicole realized that as long as you love art, you will achieve something in a way.
As she sat and decorated a chocolate cupcake with small animal shapes for a child's birthday party, Nicole had an incredible idea.
“That's it!” she said out loud. The next day after school, she asked her mother to teach her how to make cupcakes and frosting. If the rules read that the entire project had to be made without help, she would have to do it all by herself. (对应伏笔2) Nicole spent hours very carefully measuring the ingredients and her first batch of cupcakes turned out perfect.
She doubled the flour, eggs and milk and made one giant cupcake in a large round pan. (对应伏笔3) She frosted the giant cupcake and then went to work.

In secondary school, art was my favourite subject.Since I loved it so much I thought I was good at it.For the art O level exam I had to present an oil painting.I found it difficult, but still hoped to pass.I failed, with a low grade.I'd been over confident.
Although I have enjoyed breaking my decades long taboo about working with oil paints, I have discovered I now prefer chalks and ink.I let my line drawings turn into cartoons I send to friends. It all feels free and easy.Un anxious. This time around, I can accept my limitations but keep going.
Becoming a successful painter calls for being resolute.I realised I was always afraid of wanting too much. That dream reminded me that those fears and desires could encourage me to take risks and make experiments.
