When I was a kid, if someone told me that I would grow up to become a published author and founder of a youth literacy (读写能力)foundation, I would have laughed and kept walking. Even now when I see the title of my latest picture book, My Very Favorite Book in the Whole Wide World, I shake my head, not quite believing that book has my name on it. But the truth is, this story comes from my own personal experience.
It took me a very long time to find my personal reading voice. In Valdosta, Ga., where I grew up, my community promoted two pathways to a better life for little boys like me: being an athlete and being an entertainer. I was no different than the other kids, so I did what felt natural: Play football and overlook school. School presented challenges every day and so did football practice, but overcoming physical adversity (逆境) was on trend with my neighborhood’s culture. Reading books not so much.
Fortunately, I went to college. That’s where my reading struggles really reared their ugly head. Trips to the grocery store were stressful because there was so much reading involved in the simple act of buying food. I would misread labels and grab the wrong items. Once, I picked up apple sauce thinking it was apple slices. I didn’t notice my mistake until I got home and realized that it was my inability to understand the differences in the wording on the labels that caused the mistake. I realized that I needed to make an important decision. If I wanted to be a better version of me, I had to become a stronger reader.
I joined a book club and read every free moment I had. My journey with reading also created a desire in me to inspire others who struggle with reading. So I started a nonprofit, Share the Magic Foundation, trying to transform the lives of children living in underserved communities through literacy.
24.What does the author think of his new book
A.It’s beyond his expectation. B.It’s helpful for youth literacy.
C.It s full of humor and wisdom. D.It’s an exact record of his early life.
25.What was the root reason for the author s failure to find his reading voice
A.The influence of his community. B.His dream to be an entertainer.
C.The challenges he met in study. D.His preference for football.
26.What does the underlined phrase “reared their ugly head“ in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Changed. B.Concluded. C.Surfaced. D.Disappeared.
27.Which of the following best describes the author
A.Reflective and warm-hearted. B.Persuasive and absent-minded.
C.Creative and stubborn. D.Ambitious and cautious.
People frequently employ AI to craft emails, plan travel, get financial advice, summarize texts, and prepare for job interviews. According to a 2024 Pew Research survey, roughly half of Americans said they use AI at least several times a week, while a recent survey found that virtually all Americans use products that contain AI (even though two-thirds don’t realize it).
Companies offering AI assistants sell them as productivity boosters. They argue that assigning them routine mental tasks frees up users’ time and cognitive (认知的) resources, which they can then spend on other, more creative, and innovative pursuits. The idea makes natural sense and has backing in the scientific literature. According to cognitive load theory, the human cognitive system has limited capacity. So reducing cognitive load can enhance learning and performance.
Habitually offloading cognitive tasks to AI could backfire, however. As AI has grown more commonplace in everyday life, psychologists theorize that it reduces users’ engagement in deep, reflective thinking, causing their critical thinking skills to decline over time.
Professor Dr. Michael Gerlich, Head of the Center for Strategic Corporate Foresight and Sustainability at the Swiss Business School, is one of the researchers studying this risk. “If individuals use the cognitive resources freed up by AI for innovative tasks, the promise holds.” he told Big Think.
“However, my research and related studies suggest that many users channel these resources into passive consumption, driven by AI-enhanced content selection. This trend matches findings on digital dependence, where the convenience of AI encourages a feedback cycle that prioritizes entertainment over critical engagement.”
In other words, when AI frees up users’ cognitive resources, they typically don’t use their extra time and brain power to problem-solve or create. Rather, they tune out by watching Netflix or browsing social media — content served up by AI algorithms (算法). Gerlich found a very strong negative correlation between subjects’ use of AI tools and their critical thinking skills. The higher their usage, the lower their skills. Younger participants tended to be more dependent on AI tools compared to older participants. Education was associated with greater critical thinking skills and reduced AI’s negative effect.
28.What is the main argument of companies offering AI assistants
A.They improve efficiency and output. B.They help users reduce screen time.
C.They expand users’ cognitive abilities. D.They enhance creativity and innovation.
29.Which can replace the underlined word “backfire” in paragraph 3
A.Result in a positive effect. B.Cause negative consequences.
C.Achieve an intended outcome. D.Prove the existing theory wrong.
30.What does Dr. Gerlich’s research suggest about the use of AI
A.Freed-up resources fuel innovation.
B.AI is mainly for educational purposes.
C.Older users are more likely to rely on AI.
D.Freed-up resources go to mindless activities.
31.Which can describe the relationship between AI usage and critical thinking
A.Irrelevant. B.complicated. C.disadvantageous. D.Positive.
A technology with roots going back to the Bronze Age may offer a fast and inexpensive approach to helping achieve the United Nations climate goal of net zero emissions by 2050, according to recent Stanford-led research.
The technology involves fitting heat-absorbing bricks in an insulated (隔热的) container, where they can store heat generated by solar or wind power for later use in industrial processes. The heat can then be released when needed by passing air through channels in the piles of “firebricks”, thus allowing cement, steel, glass, and paper factories to run on renewable energy even when wind and sunshine are unavailable. These systems are a form of thermal energy (热能) storage. The bricks are made from the same materials as the bricks that lined primitive kilns (窑) thousands of years ago.
Batteries can store electricity and provide it to generate heat on demand. “The differences between firebrick storage and battery storage are that the firebricks store heat rather than electricity and that their cost is one-tenth the cost of batteries,” said lead study author Mark Z. Jacobson, a professor at Stanford University. “The materials are basically just the components of dirt. ”
The researchers adopted computer models to compare costs, land needs, health impacts, and emissions involved in two scenarios for an imagined future where 149 countries in 2050 are using renewable sources for all energy purposes. In one scenario, firebricks provide 90% of industrial process heat. In the other, there’s zero adoption of firebricks or other forms of thermal energy storage. The researchers found the scenario with firebricks could cut costs by $1.27 trillion across the 149 countries, while reducing the demand for electrical energy and energy storage capacity from batteries.
Jacobson’s focus on firebricks is relatively new, inspired by a desire to identify effective solutions that could be adopted quickly. “Here I can see a substantial benefits at low cost from multiple angles, from helping reduce air pollution deaths to making it easier to turn the world to clean energy,” he said.
32.What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A.How firebrick storage technology works. B.How firebricks are produced sustainably.
C.What thermal energy means scientifically. D.What thermal energy storage is used to do.
33.What advantages do firebrick have over battery
A.Firebrick can store heat and cost less. B.Firebrick can generate more electricity.
C.Firebrick can provide heat more quickly. D.Firebrick is made of more advanced materials.
34.Why are the computer models adopted
A.To test the durability of firebricks. B.To cut the costs of firebricks.
C.To explore the effectiveness of firebricks. D.To test energy storage capacity of firebricks.
35.What might be a suitable title for the text
A.The usage of firebricks can replace batteries.
B.Embracing renewable electricity becomes possible.
C.Innovative systems turn heat into electricity cheaply.
D.An old technology can aid the switch to clean energy.
Turning the Page: Steps to Create a New Chapter in Your Life
Life is like a journey with ups and downs. What matters is the way you tackle each situation. 36 Here’s how you can create a new chapter in your life.
● Learn from others.
There is one common mistake that many of us make: when dealing with a problem or situation, we try to go through all of it on our own. 37 When you start learning and depending on others, you notice the different patterns which made them successful.
● Try everything in your hands.
Sometimes we might feel that we have tried out so much and still nothing is working out for us. I know that situation as I have been there. I would say this one thing to you: giving up is easy, but continuing with the pain is hard but worth it. The only workable solution that I would offer you is to think outside the box. Try solutions that you never ever dreamed of. 38
● Let go of your past.
We must forgive ourselves so that we can easily begin the next chapter. We did our best in that time. It was certainly the right thing to do but it didn’t work out and that wasn’t your fault. Forgive yourself and begin anew. 39 It is what makes us humans.
● 40
Most people get busy doing the things that don’t get them anywhere. In stressful situations, people even seek unhealthy ways to relieve the stress. Remember to live in reality to make sensible and favorable choices for yourself. Don’t follow the path to anger and destroy what is good for you. Picture your goals in your mind and make sensible steps towards them with each passing day. Let nothing stand in your way.
A.Do what actually works.
B.Everyone makes mistakes.
C.Live in the present moment.
D.They might actually make things better for you.
E.It is essential for you to turn the page and create a new chapter.
F.However, humans are social beings and we have to interact with each other.
G.Whether it is a sweet love story or a serious life struggle, you must learn to move on.

There was a time in my life when I enjoyed violin very much. But when it came to performing in front of other people, I always became nervous and got discouraged frequently with my inability to play as well as I could when practicing alone. The fear of making mistakes made my hand tremble, overshadowing the joy I found in music. I worried that a single wrong note would break the connection I hoped to create with my listeners.
Determined to overcome this fear, I joined my high school orchestra (管弦乐队) as a freshmen. At our first class, the conductor announced that we would have the opportunity to perform in San Antonio, and everyone was excited about the trip.
A few weeks before the actual trip, one of my friends sent me a video of Joshua Bell, a well-known violinist, performing at a subway station. I was particularly fascinated by one piece that he played for the passersby. And he earned $32.17 for that piece.
I was deeply moved by the emotional richness and complexity of the piece, and I felt a strong desire to express its beauty. I imagined myself performing it confidently, just like Bell. I started practicing it like crazy. However, the difficulty of the piece and the constant repetitions and adjustments wore me out to the point where I almost considered just giving up. But it was a worthy challenge and I thought I could master it, with my unique style.
Several weeks later, our orchestra group were staying at a hotel in San Antonio. As we were hanging out, we found a beautiful courtyard just in front of the hotel. The friend who sent me the video and I were talking about how Joshua Bell’s performance at the subway station went viral on the social media.

M: Well, good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the Crowne Plaza business center at Coogee Beach. I’m David Bowers, your host for the next two days, and I just want to give you some practical information. OK. Coffee, tea, and cold drinks are served all day in the cafe which is just inside the main entrance to the hotel. Lunch is served between 12:00 and 2:30 in the private dining room. This evening you are invited to join the management for drinks by the swimming pool. The General Manager usually makes a short welcome speech. I’d like to apologize for the temperature. I’m afraid it’s a little warmer than usual in here because the air conditioning in the business center is being repaired. However, the work will be completed before lunchtime. Right. There are some changes to the conference program. Unfortunately, one of the main speakers has canceled her talk and so a couple of the sessions have been canceled or rescheduled. The updated program is being printed at the moment. OK, now, before we go for breakfast, are there any questions

66.Good morning, everyone! I’m honored to deliver a speech themed “The Impacts of Smartphones on Students”.
Nowadays, smartphones are everywhere among students. We use them for various purposes, from study to entertainment. Smartphones bring both advantages and disadvantages. They provide quick access to a vast amount of learning resources, enabling us to study more efficiently. However, they also distract us easily. Many students are addicted to mobile games and social media, which leads to a decline in their academic performance.
To make good use of smartphones, we should set clear time limits for non - study use and download beneficial apps for learning. Only in this way can we maximize their benefits while minimizing the negative impacts.
Thank you for your listening!
67.Suddenly, he suggested that I play for the hotel customers in the courtyard. At first, I was hesitant. The fear of making mistakes and embarrassing myself in front of others welled up inside me. But then I thought of Joshua Bell’s performance in the subway station. He played with such passion and dedication regardless of the setting. I took a deep breath, nodded, and got my violin ready. I walked to the center of the courtyard, and as I started to play, all eyes turned towards me.
I tried not to mind the mistakes halfway through the performance as before. Instead, I focused on the music itself, on expressing the beauty and emotion that I had felt when I first listened to the piece. I remembered the countless hours of practice, the determination to master this challenge. Gradually, I lost myself in the music. When I finished, there was a moment of silence, and then warm applause filled the courtyard. I looked around, seeing smiles on the faces of the hotel customers. A sense of accomplishment washed over me. I had finally overcome my fear and connected with the audience through the music.
