通草花工作坊
At Beijing New Oriental Yangzhou Foreign Language School, there’s a special club called Tongcao Flowers Paper Art Workshop. It recently won the first prize at a school said 14-year-old Ren Daiyang. “The paper dries in 10 seconds, so I must work quickly!” First, cut paper into 3mm-5mm strips. Then, shape the wet paper into petals, and put them together like a flower. Finally, they paint details like stamens (花蕊) with food coloring.
13-year-old Zhang Shiyu spends over 2 hours on each flower. “My first flower looked like a duckling!” she laughed. “But now I’ve made 50. This art teaches me not to give up.” Her classmate He Liyan,14, added, “It’s cool to keep a 300-year-old skill alive.”
Tongcao flowers are Yangzhou’s intangible cultural heritage (since 2007). The white paper’s softness lets creators shape it into peonies, plum blossoms, even butterflies. The club’s 2m×3m display board at the event looked like a spring garden—prove that young hands can protect old traditions.

According to a survey, many people think genes (基因) and intelligence have something to do with students’ success or failure. But there aren’t any researches to support this opinion. And in fact, it is not right at all. There is one thing that can finally decide students’ success or failure. That is how they learn. A few students are clever and lucky. They find good ways for themselves to study every subject well. But others aren’t so lucky like them. They don’t find correct ways of their own and fail in the end.
To teachers, what is the best way to teach languages Dr. Asher found a way called “Total Physical Response”. This was helpful to students. Studies in San Jose State University showed that if students moved their bodies when learning English, they were able to learn more new words and grammar in a very short time. But if they sat still and didn’t move, they could learn less. And after a year, the students who moved their bodies when learning remembered 80% or more things. But others forgot more than 80%.
Now you may know how to learn English. Keep moving when you learn. So when you listen to a story or an article, do actions as soon as you hear it. And you can imagine you are the person in the story or the article. By doing this, you can learn more English and you can remember it longer. The most useful thing is that you can use it more easily. Stop your old methods. Try this one at once!

《金银岛》
We began our hunt for the treasure. I was tied with rope and held by Silver. The other pirates (海盗) carried picks and shovels.
Suddenly, one man at the front shouted. We ran towards him and saw a skeleton (骨架) lying near a pine tree. With a compass (罗盘), we knew it pointed in the direction of Skeleton Island, where the treasure is. It reminded the pirates of the Captain Flint’s story and they started discussing his death.
When we rested, we heard a voice singing from the trees, similar to Flint’s. The pirates were all frightened. “Someone is playing a trick on us.” said Silver. The men started to feel better. However, the voice called out again, which made pirates look around in fear. Silver said, “I was never afraid of Flint when he was alive, and neither I am now. I won’t turn back on treasure quite near.” With this, the men’s spirits returned. They picked up things and we continued walking. Along the way, I was worried about Silver. I believe he could kill everyone to keep the treasure for himself.
One pirate shouted and the others started running but stopped at a great big hole. All the signs clearly showed treasure was not there. A fight was about to happen, but Silver acted faster. When I and Silver were prepared for the attack, the doctor, Gray and Ben Gunn came out and joined us.
As we walked to boats, the doctor told the story. “Two months ago, Ben found treasure and carried it to a cave. When we arrived, I met Gunn,” continued the doctor. “Then when I couldn’t see the ship, I visited Silver and gave him the useless map. I thought Jim was sure to be taken to the empty treasure pit. So I left squire and captain guarding the cave, and arrived at the pit (坑) in time. Gunn went before me, as he could move faster and worked on the pirates’ fears by singing and calling out, with great success.”

Leaves fall off trees. But have you ever thought of picking them up and making art with them
Students at the Hefei 168 Taochonghu School have done this. They used different leaves to make pictures that describe how they feel about fall. They also added some drawings or short lines of text to their works.
This project was a task given by their English teacher Zhou Yanfang. She had an open class about fall based on an article titled Fall Brings Creativity. Since the story talked about famous writers’ descriptions of fall, Zhou wanted her students to create their own “fall” through leaves. She said her students’ creations amazed her.
Tao Yifei, 14, was inspired by the “cold” and “wintry (寒冷的)” fall described by American writer Ernest Hemingway in his book A Moveable Feast (《流动的盛宴》). In Tao’s picture, a boy stands alone against a background of falling leaves. Tao used some leaves to make trees and drew the boy and an empty chair to show sadness.
However, in Qiu Yutang’s eyes, fall is romantic. “It makes me think of roses,” the 15-year-old said. He created a yellow rose with ginkgo (银杏) leaves. It was regarded as the best picture in his class. Qiu spent a whole morning picking leaves of different sizes. Then he placed them one by one to create the rose. Similarly, Wang Han, 15, turned ginkgo leaves into a beautiful dress for the girl in her picture.
Some students added other elements (元素), too. Zhu Zihao, 15, drew a Peking Opera facial mask. He put a big maple leaf next to the face. He wanted his picture to stand for the words, “One falling leaf can herald the coming of fall (一叶知秋)”.

“Look in my eyes. Tell me why.” Have you found yourself listening to “ancient people” online recently
Creative vloggers (视频博主) are using AI technology to bring famous people from history like Tang Dynasty poets Li Bai and Du Fu “back to life”. These videos have become popular, showing these ancient icons speaking in modern language.
In one video, Du Fu talks about his experience during the An-Shi Rebellion (755—763). In another, Ming Dynasty medical expert (专家) Li Shizhen makes fun of modern lifestyles like trying to be healthy by drinking goji berry (枸杞) water but still staying up late.
“These videos make me want to learn more about important ancient people. I didn’t know much about their stories before,” said Wang Jiayi, 15, from Shandong.
The new trend isn’t for everyone, however. The way these ancient people speak, in high tones (声调) and always asking questions, annoys (使心烦) some people. “They’re too pushy (压迫感的), which is different from how they really were,” said 14-year-old Wang Shutong from Jiangsu.
Xia Boen, 14, from Hubei, felt the same. But he was surprised to find that he “remembered almost everything they said about their experiences and achievements” because of the speaking style in the videos.
These videos use a more modern way to let ancient people “speak for themselves”. However, “we should be careful with these videos and make sure they are not sharing wrong information,” noted Nanfang Daily.
