Does your company employ people from a diverse range of backgrounds How can you adapt your policies to adapt to cultural diversity in the workplace
In their book No Rules Rules, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings and author Erin Meyer discuss the challenges Netflix faced when it started to grow internationally. Hastings learned two major lessons about working with people from different cultures and now Netflix successfully operates in over 190 countries.
By 2011, Netflix had built a culture of autonomy and accountability (责任) that enabled the company to produce great results in America. Hastings began expanding the company into other countries. By 2016, Netflix was in more than 130 countries worldwide.
Still, Hastings knew from his past international travels that certain experiences and practices can’t be translated directly into other cultures. He considered whether the company culture he’d worked so hard to develop would work outside the U.S., or whether it would cause confusion and misunderstanding.
He made a plan to make the international expansion as smooth as possible: He would find foreign job candidates who could adapt to the culture he had carefully developed. The company would then train those new hires on the ins and outs of working within a culture of autonomy and accountability. Besides while Hastings adjusted international employees to the Netflix way, he would also remain open to adapting to and learning from their cultures.
Apart from Hastings’ give-and-take approach to cross-cultural adaptation, companies can preserve their core philosophies by sticking to Meyer’s principles when expanding operations to other countries. Determine the pressure points. Identify the specific aspects that are likely to cause conflict in decision-making processes and the approach to timelines. And then have a diverse workforce in every office. Having homogeneous (同质) staff at each office might create gaps between international offices. For example, a Singapore office with mostly young creatives might have a hard time communicating with an office in Copenhagen with mostly middle-aged finance experts. Ensuring diversity helps all employees get used to working with other cultures on a day-to-day basis.
5. What is the focus of the book No Rules Rules
A. Hastings’ achievements in expanding Netflix.
B. Netflix’s approaches to growing internationally.
C. Hastings and Meyer’s cooperation in creating Netflix.
D. Netflix’s efforts to develop cultural diversity in its expansion.
6. Why did Hastings worry copying his previous practice would cause confusion
A. Each culture had their uniqueness.
B. He did many international travels.
C. Individual workers had distinct personalities.
D. People tended to reject taking accountability.
7. What does the author think of Hastings’ expansion plan
A. It’s unlikely to work in practice.
B. It’s too ambitious to be carried out.
C It’s an ordinary plan without creativity.
D. It’s flexible enough to ensure the successful expansion.
8. What does Meyer suggest the company do
A. Appoint young creative workers.
B. Recognize the sources of pressure.
C. Take a give-and-take approach.
D. Hire a homogeneous staff.

Tourists across China have enjoyed a series of cultural events from traditional to modern, and discovered new destinations during this year’s five-day May Day holiday.
Items on China’s traditional intangible cultural heritage list proved to be popular with travelers in many regions. In Lantian county, northwest China’s Shanxi Province, tourists were amazed by the art of Dawaz, which means aerial tightrope (空中钢丝) walking in the Uygur language, Meanwhile, in east China’s Changzhou City, music festival s attracted huge crowds of travelers, and local authorities introduced measures to ensure the comfort of visitors. They arranged 500 coaches for long-distance travel, set up more than 10,000 free parking spaces and extended the operation hours of the subway network until 11:30 p.m.
And it’s not just big cities that drew in visitors during this holiday. Holiday makers decided to go for natural views, less-crowded scenic spots, and cost-effective travel experiences. Data from Chinese travel booking platform Ctrip showed that orders for fourth-tier and below cities increased by 140 percent on a yearly basis, outperforming those in first and second-tier cities.
Wu Sa, deputy director of the Economic Research Institute of the National Development and Reform Commission, expressed belief that the popularity of usual major destinations like Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Hangzhou and Chengdu is not decreasing, but explained that a good number of travelers are looking to diversify the scope of their travels, towards new and previously lesser-known places.
Scientific and space projects have also been a hit travel destination this week, from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China to the world’s largest single-dish radio telescope in the southwestern province of Guizhou. “I mainly wanted to take my child to appreciate some of China’s leading space technology and the development trend of big data, so that he can understand the advanced technology of our motherland,” said a tourist named Hu Wannping.
9. What attracted tourists to the Changzhou City
A. The launch of music festivals.
B. The Aerial tightrope walking performance.
C. The celebration of traditional cultural events.
D. The measures to provide comfort for tourists.
10. What may account for people’s choice of fourth-tier and below cities
A. Famous scenic spots.
B. Low travelling expenses.
C. Intangible heritage culture.
D. Convenient means of transportation.
11. What can be inferred from the text
A. The growth of visitors is causing various social issues.
B. Scientific and space projects receive the least attention.
C. Orders for major destinations in big cities are decreasing.
D. Tourists are open-minded as to the choices of spending holidays.
12. What can be the best title of the text
A. Festivals and Celebrations across China
B. The Popularity of Well-known Destinations
C. New Trend for Labor Day Tourist Destinations
D. China’s Traditional Intangible Cultural Heritage
【答案】9. A 10. B 11. D 12. C

Why should we explore space Why should resources be spent on space rather than on conditions and people on Earth Perhaps the best answer lies in our history. What made our ancestors move from the trees onto the plains Did a wider distribution of our species offer a better chance of survival
Nearly all successful civilizations have been willing to explore space. In exploring, the dangers of surrounding areas may be identified and prepared for. Without knowledge, these dangers have the ability to harm us. With knowledge, their effects may be decreased.
While many resources are spent on what seems a small return, the exploration of space allows new resources to be created. Resources translate into success at survival. Knowledge or techniques acquired in exploring always filter from the developers to the general population. Techniques may be medical applications, such as new drugs or ways of living to increase the quantity or the quality of time lived. Techniques may be social, allowing the people in a society to better understand those within or outside that culture.
European Space Agency (ESA) does what individual European nations cannot do on their own. Scientists from European nations can function at world-class level in their specialist fields, in co-operation rather than competition. By studying alien worlds, such as Venus, Mars or Saturn’s moon Titan, we can place our own world in context. ESA’s exploration of the Solar System is focused on understanding the Earth’s relationship with the other planets, essential stepping stones for exploring the wider Universe.
While space may hold many wonders and explanations of how the universe was formed or how it works, it also holds dangers. The chance of a large asteroid or comet hitting the Earth is small. But given time, it will happen. The dangers exist and knowledge can allow us as a species to survive. Without the ability to reach out across space, the chance to save ourselves might not exist.
13. Why does the author list questions in the first paragraph
A. To stress the wide distribution of our species.
B. To introduce human's efforts to explore space.
C. To illustrate the importance of space exploration.
D. To highlight the long history of space exploration.
14. What does space exploration enable humans to do
A. Uncover the unknown resources of the universe.
B. Understand better about the culture of society.
C. Gain more knowledge about the origin of life.
D. Reduce the harmful impact on alien worlds.
15. How does ESA work in space exploration
A. It compares the Earth with other planets.
B. It focuses its study on a particular planet.
C. It advocates cooperative work of individual nations.
D. It encourages scientists to compete in their specialized fields.
16. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. Exploring space means rescuing ourselves.
B. There is a small chance of comet hitting the Earth in future.
C. The formation of the universe requires further explanation.
D. Wonders about the universe reflect potential risks from space.

【答案】One possible version:
My Volunteering Experience
Last summer, I volunteered at a local animal shelter, a place where abandoned pets find a second chance at life. My duties included feeding the animals, cleaning their living spaces, and taking them for walks. It was hard work, but the joy of seeing the animals wag their tails and purr with contentment made it all worthwhile.
This experience taught me the importance of compassion and dedication. I realized that every small act of kindness towards these animals could make a significant difference in their lives. It was a humbling reminder of how fortunate I am and how much I take for granted. Volunteering at the animal shelter has not only given me a sense of purpose but also a deeper understanding of responsibility and empathy.2023学年第二学期高中期末调测
